Three days passed by without any change in Ranma’s condition. Akane stayed by his side the entire time, waiting to see if her fiancé could cheat death once again. However, this time, she wasn’t so sure. Ranma had drained his chi energy far lower than what he should have. His being alive was a miracle in itself.
It was late at night, and Akane removed the cold rag that she’d put on Ranma’s forehead. She pulled the blankets up around him and tucked him in. Shdn’tdn’t know what else to do; it wasn’t like she was an expert at treating illnesses anyway.
The youngest Tendo clasped her fiancé’s hand in her own and gave it a gentle squeeze.
‘Come back to me, you stupid baka,’ she laughed silently as tears filled her eyes. Akane stood up and backed away, when a pair of hands came to rest on her shoulders.
“How is he?” Shinnosuke asked. Akane turned around and shook her head at him.
“I don’t know, he looks the same since weughtught him here, but I don’t know, I’m not a doctor,” she groaned in frustration.
What Akane didn’t know was that at that moment Ranma was breaching the wall of consciousness, and his eyes opened just enough for him to see.
Ranma saw that he was in a small room inside a house in the forest. He slowly turned his head, and his vision focused on the two people standing near the doorway. It was Akane and Shinnosuke.
The martial artist watched as the two embraced each other, and Ranma felt his heart break all over again. When he saw Shinnosuke kiss Akane on the cheek, he felt anger and jealousy flooding over his body. He wanted nothing more to jump up and pound him into a pulp for stealing his Akane.
‘His Akane?’ No, Akane had never really been his; he just saw it that way and hoped that she might have to. Regardless of who Akane was with, Ranma made a promise to protect her, and he had. ‘His’ duty now lay in the hands of another man, and Ranma found himself hating the idea.
At that point, Ranma made a plan to leave as soon as he could. He couldn’t watch Akane be held in another man’s arms; the thought alone made him noxious.
Ranma promptly shut his eyes as Akane turned back towards him. She knelt down by his bed and grabbed a book that she’d been reading.
“Goodnight Ranma,” she said softly and patted his forehead.
Ranma opened his eyes just a little bit to see Akane follow Shinnosuke out of the room and shut the door. He had no place here; Akane was with the man she wanted.
Three nights later, Ranma had gotten most of his strength back. He still acted unconscious during the day because he didn’t want Akane to know what he was doing. Saying goodbye to her wasn’t something that he wanted to do.
Akane said goodnight to him and left just as she always did.
About an hour passed, and Ranma knew that the house was asleep. He climbed out of bed and noticed that his clothes were sitting by the bedside. He’d left them here when he’d gone after Akane. Ranma quickly dressed and slipped out of the room.
The martial artist slithered through the house until he reached the front door. Along his way, Ranma had passed directly by the place where Akane was sleeping. He couldn’t help himself and approached the sleeping girl.
Akane rolled onto her side, and her blanket fell over her slightly. Ranma tucked the blanket back around her and simply gazed at his fiancé. She looked so beautiful in the moonlight. Her cheeks were flushed slightly, and her lips were slightly parted. Her breathing was even, and her short, dark hair fell over her face slightly.
Taking a chance, Ranma ran a hand through her soft locks. When Akane had first cut it short, he’d told her that she looked like a boy, but now, Ranma realized that it made her all the more alluring to him. He felt a feeling stirring inside him, and his hand went to his pigtail. Finding something hard tucked into his hair, Ranma carefully removed the item from its hiding place.
Ranma picked up Akane’s left hand and laid a gentle kiss on her soft skin. She stirred slightly but did not awaken. Ranma looked at her third finger, then at the item in his opposite hand. Without a second thought, Ranma slid the object into place. It had taken nearly three years to save enough money to buy it, but he knew that Akane was worth anything in world. Unfortunately, he’d lost her before he could give it to her for real. At least, she would have something to remember him by.
‘Goodbye Akane,’ he said silently. Ranma laid her hand down and quietly headed for the door. He grabbed his pack and exited the small house.
The night air was cool and crisp, and it refreshed Ranma’s senses. He headed down the path until something stopped him.
“Leaving so soon?” Ryoga asked from the side of the road. Ranma groaned; the last thing he needed was a fight right now.
“What else should I be doing?” the pig-tailed martial artist growled softly.
“Are you just going to leave Akane without saying goodbye?” the young man asked. Now, Ranma was getting agitated.
“Look Ryoga, I won’t be able to say goodbye to her if she looks me in tye. ye. Do you understand?” he hissed. His archrival nodded his head.
“I’ve never known you to walk away from a fight, Ranma,” Ryoga fired back.
“There’s nothing to fight about anymore, okay. I did fight Shinnosuke, and you know what, Akane protected him from me! She’s chosen the man she wants, and I’ll respect her decision, but I’m not staying to see her being held by another man.” Ranma’s battle aura was beginning to glow. “Now, if that’s all your questions, Ryoga, I’d like to go before we wake up the whole forest!”
Ryoga watched Ranma walk off down the path, and he shook his head in defeat. Ranma had never lost a fight in his life…until now.
Akane Tendo yawned as she woke up the following morning. She stretched out her arms above her head and worked the kinks out of her shoulders. She felt something strange on her left hand. Her heart nearly stopped when she saw a ring on her third finger.
“What’s this?” she gasped and slid the ring off her finger. Akane examined the beautiful item. It was solid gold and had a row of six diamonds stretched across it.
“This is incredible, but where did this come from?” Akane then noticed that something was written on the inside. ‘To Akane Yours Forever Ranma’. The young woman felt her heart freeze in mid-beat.
“Oh no!” She rushed down to his room and found his bed empty. Akane raced outside but found no trace of Ranma anywhere.
“Ranma,” she said sadly. She had hoped that he wouldn’t have tried this, and tears filled her eyes.
“Akane, what’s wrong?” Shinnosuke and his grandfather asked as they rushed outside to meet her.
“Ranma’s gone; he left last night,” she answered.
“Why would he do that?” grandfather asked.
“He…he probably felt that he was intruding…so he left as soon as he was healed,” Akane stated. Shinnosuke walked up to her and smiled.
“Then why are you still here Akane? I care about you a lot, but I know that Ranma loves you, and you love him. I could see it every time you two looked at each other. Go find him, Akane,” the young man said firmly. She perked up immediately.
“You’re right, Shinnosuke. Ranma couldn’t have gone that far during the night; I’ll find him,” the girl said happily.
Akane quickly gathered her things and said goodbye to her two friends. Once she was ready, Akane ran down the path desperate to find a certain pig-tailed young man who owned her heart.
Akane hiked all day and into the early evening when her eyes picked up smoke from a campfire. Throughout the day, she’d found traces of Ranma’s path- either a discarded container or crushed branches or leaves along the path.
Ranma sat staring into the campfire; there was nothing in his eyes- no life at all. He’d left his life back there at that small house.
“You’ll burn your eyebrows if you’re not careful,” a familiar voice stated. Ranma felt his heart start beating for the first time that day. He lifted his head to see a beautiful, young woman walk up to his fire.
“Akane?” he gasped. She seemed even more alluring that than the last time he saw her. Her stockings accentuated the muscles in her calves and thighs, her shorts hugged her slim waist, and her tight, yellow sweater showed off her developed torso.
The youngest Tendo dropped her pack and walked up to Ranma. She grabbed him by the collar and yanked him to his feet.
“Hey!” Ranma interjected.
“Shut-up you idiot, how could you leave without talking to me? Do you know how much that hurt me?” Akane nearly shouted. Ranma couldn’t meet her gaze.
“Yes, I do, and I’m sorry, but I just couldn’t stay there anymore, okay,” he defended.
“Why, is my bedside manner that bad?” Akane growled. She knew Ranma’s true reason for leaving, but her temper was getting the better of her like it always had. Her body was achy from hiking all day, and she needed to vent a little.
“Dammit Akane, that’s not the reason. I just couldn’t watch another man hold you, all right,” Ranma nearly shouted. Akane’s eyes shot open; she couldn’t believe what he’d just said.
“Ranma…you still should have said goodbye to me,” she said softly. The martial artist could see tears forming in his fiancé’s eyes and raised his hand to her cheek. Akane felt the tenderness of his touch as he brushed away the wetness from her eyes.
“Akane…I didn’t want to say goodbye to you; I don’t ever want to say goodbye to you,” Ranma blurted out. Normally, he’d never say any of these things to Akane, but he knew that she wasn’t going to stay with him so he had nothing to lose.
The young woman let go of his collar, and her eyes sparkled in the moonlight. Akane could still remember Ranma’s statement, ‘Akane is mine!’ He’d screamed that loud enough for the world to hear. She put her small hand on the side of his face, causing Ranma’s eyes to widen in astonishment.
“Ranma…” she said softly, “…I never want you to say goodbye; I want never want you to leave me.” The cards were on the table. Ranma had thrown down a gauntlet, and Akane had answered the challenge. Now, the question was…would they both accept it?
Ranma gazed down into Akane’s eyes; her soft pools were shimmering at him. He didn’t care if she was staying or not; he needed to show her what she truly meant to him. Ranma stepped forward and enveloped his fiancé in his arms. Akane was about to gasp when she felt his lips meet hers.
Within a few moments, the two of them were lost in the kiss. Akane’s arms encircled his neck, while Ranma held her sides so she couldn’t back away (not like she wanted to). Akane felt Ranma’s tongue probing her lips, nearly begging for entry, and she gave it to him wholeheartedly.
“Oh Akane…” he moaned into her mouth.
“Oh Ranma…” she answered in the same passionate tone.
Ranma let her go, and Akane opened her eyes and tried to catch her breath. It wasn’t the first that they’d kissed, but it was the first ‘real’ kiss that they’d shared together, and Akane wanted to beg him for another and another and another and another.
“Akane, I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have done that,” Ranma stated and released her. She felt devastated!
“Ranma, why? Is there something wrong?” Akane asked as her bottom lip quivered.
“I can’t do this. I can’t kiss you, then send you back to Shinnosuke; I’d go nuts!” her fiancé replied. A sly smile spread across Akane’s face.
“Who says I’m going back?” she asked. Ranma’s jaw dropped open. Was she serious?
“You mean…you’re not staying with him?” he said trying to confirm his own ears. Akane moved closer to him and put her hands on his chest. She lifted her left hand and showed Ranma the ring that he’d given her.
“How could I be away from the man that loves me?” Akane asked with a sweet smile.
“But I thought you were happy there,” Ranma stated. Akane rolled her eyes; he really didn’t know when to take a hint.
“I only went there to return a favor, Ranma,” she replied.
“Then, you’ll come back with me?” he nearly pleaded.
“How could I be separated from the man that I love?” Akane asked. Ranma didn’t answer her but instead swept into the air. She giggled as he spun her around.
“Hey, put me down, you baka!” she laughed. Ranma only brought her down to his eye level.
“I love you, Akane Tendo,” he said with all his heart. He received the most beautiful smile that he’d ever seen in his life.
“I love you too, Ranma Saotome,” his fiancé answered him. Akane found herself locked into a heart-rendering kiss and wrapped her arms around his torso.
Ranma eventually put her down but didn’t release her. He placed several light kisses on her lips, and Akane giggled softly.
“I love it when you smile,” he said tenderly.
“I know you do,” she replied. Any further comment was interrupted as Akane let out a long, sleepy yawn, and her eyes closed slightly.
“You’re exhausted aren’t you?” Ranma asked.
“Well, you’re not that easy to catch,” Akane retorted. He picked her up and carried her over towards the fire.
“C’mon, let’s get you to sleep. Did you bring a sleeping bag?” Ranma asked.
“Well…” she said with sly grin, “…I was kind of hoping that we could share.”
“And I was hoping that you’d ask?” he teased and kissed her softly. Ranma set Akane down on his sleeping bag and pulled off her boots. He kicked off his own shoes and undid his Chinese top.
“What are doing?” Akane asked.
“I get hot if I wear this all night,” Ranma answered and tossed his long-sleeved shirt to the side. His fiancé now had a full view of his lean, muscular torso, and Akane felt her body heating rising as she imagined that hard body pressed up against hers.
Her thoughts became reality as Ranma lay down next to her and brushed her hair off her face.
“Did you need to change?” he asked, inquiring as to whether or not she planned to sleep in her clothes. Akane hated having to leave his side, but she wasn’t in the mood for sleeping in her current attire. Besides, she wanted to see Ranma’s reaction to her. She nodded her head, and he released her.
Ranma turned around, and Akane stepped behind a nearby tree to quickly change her clothes. She came out a few minutes later, and Ranma gawked at her.
“Akane…ah…ah…wow!” he choked out. She blushed slightly. Akane suddenly realized that Ranma had removed his pants. All he had on were his boxer shorts.
‘Oh boy, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to handle lying next to him without losing it,’ Akane said silently.
Ranma was thinking the same thing as he looked at Akane’s attire. She had on a pair of gray flannel pajama pants and a white tank top, and Ranma could tell that she had nothing on underneath it. He held his hand out to her, and Akane relaxed instantly.
Ranma pulled his fiancé down next to him and lowered her onto the ground. Quickly joining her, Ranma stroked his fingers through her silky hair, and Akane snuggled close to him.
“My sweet, beautiful Akane…” Ranma sighed.
“My kind, dashing Ranma…” she answered him. They exchanged a passionate kiss, and Ranma drew the other end of the bag over them. Akane turned away from him and moved back into his lap so they lay together like spoons. Ranma put a hand on her hip, and Akane pulled it around her.
“Akane?” he asked softly. She turned her head to face him.
“Hmm?” she replied with a smile. Ranma clasped her left hand in his and rubbed the ring that he’d given her.
“I’m glad that you’re my fiancé,” he said with a smile. Akane grinned at him.
“And I’m glad that you’re my fiancé,” she retorted. Ranma nuzzled her neck near her ear and gently nipped at her skin. “Hey! Behave yourself, Ranma!”
“Why should I? I know you love it when tease you…” he trailed off and lowered his hand to her stomach, “…and I know you love it when I do this.” Ranma rubbed her tummy, and Akane squirmed in his arms.
“Oh no, don’t even think about tickling me, or you’ll sleep on the ground,” she said firmly. Ranma kissed her cheek.
“You know something, Akane?”
“What Ranma?”
“Regardless of everything that’s happened to us over the past few years, this moment right here and now makes it all worth it.” Ranma tightened his hold on her, and Akane wiggled in his arms.
“I know, Ranma, no matter what we’ve gone through…this time right now where we’re together is more than enough compensation. It’s our reward!” she laughed.
“Hmm, you just wait till our wedding night; I’ll give you a real reward then,” Ranma said seductively. Akane gave him a sultry smile.
“What if I want it before then?” she asked with a raised brow. That took Ranma a little off guard.
“If you ask for it, Akane, you’ll get it without question,” he said firmly. She leaned back and kissed him.
Akane settled into his arms, and Ranma held her tight as they drifted off to sleep under the bright moonlight overhead.
