Chapter 2: Fish Out Of Water
James brought me into his home and I glanced around with wide eyes. This was the first time I\'ve stepped into a human\'s home and it was rather interesting. It had more things in here than I never knew existed. I slid out of his arms and looked around frowning while Squirtle remained in my arms. He watched us carefully and never let us out of his sight. I studied every single thing around me. But if I picked up something I wasn\'t supposed to, it earned me a tap on the hand and the object being taken from me.
He lifted me in his arms while Squirtle found himself staring at his reflection in a mirror and was entertained. He sat down on a couch and held me in his lap. \"Now, I told you my name,\" he said. \"Who are you?\" He pointed at me and I frowned. \"What is your name?\" he asked suddenly realizing my English sucked (that was a human word I picked up from somewhere). I looked at him and nodded. I pointed to myself and grinned. \"James!\" I shouted proudly. Apparently, I liked men names because I just named myself his name.
He laughed hard then. \"No,\" he said once he recovered. \"I\'m James.\" I put my hand on his chest and repeated his name. He nodded. \"Looks like we have to find you a name,\" he said. \"Otherwise you\'ll be calling yourself a name that doesn\'t fit you. I\'m glad I kept that book of names and their meanings from when I was young.\" He carried me to a bookcase and glanced at them. I looked at the look on his face and then stared at the books the same way. He chuckled and found what he was looking for.
That evening, I sat on a table while he had some names written down and he looked at me. \"How about...Ashley?\" he asked. Ashley? That was the most hidious name I\'d heard in my life! (A/N: no offense to all you Ashleys out there. It\'s not even my POV) I made a disgusted face and he frowned. \"Ok, no,\" he said dismissing the name. \"Uh, Becky?\" Again, the same look from me. \"Cecelia?\" he asked. I shook my head and stuck my tongue out at him. I was more interested in another book nearby. He began naming the names to himself when he hit Kari. My head jerked up at the name. It had that sound to it that got to me and if I was to live in the human world, I wanted this name!
\"Kari!\" I shouted suddenly. He lifted his head and looked at me. \"Huh?\" he asked in confusion. \"Kari,\" I repeated. I pointed at myself nodding. \"All right,\" he said smiling. \"Kari it is.\" Squirtle gazed up at me and held his arms out to me. I grunted and tried to reach him from my position in the table, but couldn\'t. James lifted my Pokemon in my arms and handed him to me. I hugged him close and grinned. \"That\'s Squirtle,\" he said. I looked up at him trying to form the words. \"S...Squirtle,\" I said. He nodded and smiled.
Later, James carried both of us upstairs to take a bath. When I saw the water going in the tub, I gulped. He didn\'t know I was a mermaid. I was scared suddenly. But he was stronger than me and he plunked me in the water. A glow surrounded my human legs and a royal blue fish tail took their place and he stared at me in shock. \"You\'re a mermaid?\" he whispered. I bowed my head and felt tears come to my eyes. He didn\'t need to know this. What if he turned me into those scientists? He lifted a hand and pushed back my long auburn hair so he could lift my chin. \"Kari, I understand what happened to you,\" he said. \"I won\'t do that to you.\" I frowned not understanding him. \"James...Kari,\" he said touching both of our hearts. It was then I realized what he meant. I nodded slowly and he nodded as well.
The next morning, James found some old clothes that could fit me and got me dressed since we had to go into Pallet Town for shopping. Squirtle clutched me the entire time as we walked the six miles to town. Once I saw all the humans surrounding me, I was frightened. I jumped in James\' arms fast shaking uncontrollably. \"Easy there,\" he said holding me close. \"No hurt Kari,\" I whispered. \"They won\'t hurt you,\" he said and I sighed, but hardly relaxed. Once in the store, I was in a panic. \"Kari, look,\" he said and pointed to some toys. He handed me a teddy bear and I studied it. \"Toy,\" he explained. \"Toy?\" I asked. He nodded and put some in the cart for me to play with. Then it came to clothes. He always asked for my opinion the entire time. I would study it for a moment before giving him either a good look or a bad look. But that afternoon, I was amazed that no one could tell I wasn\'t human. It was shocking, but I felt like I finally belonged.
James realized I needed to learn a few things as well. My favorite hobby to him was getting into everything and making a mess since I didn\'t know what half of the stuff was he talked about. With very limited English to my vocabulary, he had to rely on my facial expressions and other things to figure out what I wanted. That could sometimes be hard since he had to figure out things when I wanted others. It was then he knew he had to teach me English. It was the only way. But I had a short attention span. I wouldn\'t sit still long enough for anything. Squirtle was the only thing that could keep me calm, so he used him to his advantage. \"Kari, sit,\" he ordered sternly. I knew what that word meant and I sat down on a chair. He sat down next to me and held up a book. \"We\'re going to talk,\" he said seriously and the lessons began. Squirtle sat in James\' lap listening as well, but he wasn\'t interested in English at all.
If English lessons weren\'t enough, I had to adapt to my new world out of the water. I soon discovered I had a true love for Pokemon and not just Squirtle. James had a Pokemon named Koffing, who was a Poison Pokemon. Squirtle never got along with it, but with me, it was like when I saw all Pokemon: I went crazy! But my Water Pokemon would let it know when he had enough by giving it a Water Gun Attack faster than anything. I giggled at my best friend. He could be funny at times, but he suddenly took up the role of a protector at times since I had no other friends. James never bothered with allowing me near other children. As I got older and my world soon became more familiar, the only human I ever saw was him and the only Pokemon was Squirtle and Koffing. I was virtually a prisoner in thuse use not allowed even to go back on the beach or outside. I was forced to lessons and to other things. When we had visitors, I was made to stay in my room and I could only hear them through my door. Pokemon seemed to be just a dream and what I had first thought would be a new home and new family soon became my nightmare. James wasn\'t what I needed. He didn\'t care about me anyway. There were times he would leave me home alone to handle his buisness and not return for days. Since no one knew I was around, no one could do anything. But when I turned ten years old, I qualified to become a Pokemon Trainer. It was what I was waiting for since I was three. But I had another rock to climb before I could get to Professor Samuel Oak\'s lab in Pallet Town: my foster father James.
