Hyoga walked slowly back to the waiting room,
the long sterile hallway a blur from his tears. As he walked by the nurse’s
desk, he heard someone yell out, “Dad!” Hyoga snapped out of his daze to find
his son running over to him. “Dad, what’s happening?” The young man wrapped
his arms around Hyoga’s body, he was very affectionate after Shun’s constant
mothering.
“He’s going into surgery soon. He has heart
failure.” Hyoga managed to say without too much emotion, he was in shock. “Oh
no! It’ll be okay, let’s go sit down.” They made their way into the waiting
room and sat down. Hyoga admired his son’s ability to see the positive, it
reminded him of Shun.
He looked at his son, their son. His name was
Kado and he was an intelligent, funny, twenty one year old studying at the local
university. They had adopted him when he was two years old from the orphanage
they all resided in as small children. Then a few years later, they had adopted
a little girl, Aiko. Their seventeen year old daughter was more than likely out
shopping or getting into trouble. She was feisty and took after Hyoga more
while Kado’s personality could easily be mistaken for Shun’s as they were so
similar.
Both children were Japanese, orphaned as
toddlers. Shun had fallen in love with the idea of having a child when they
were in their mid-twenties and Hyoga could not resist giving his love what he
wanted. In memory of their own parentless childhoods, they immediately decided
to adopt. Hyoga had been twenty-seven the year they brought Kado home. Now, he
was a forty-six year old father, a family man in the least typical way. Not
everyone’s father or fathers were defenders of the greater good.
“Dad, tell me what the doctor said.” Kado
interrupted Hyoga’s thoughts. Offering a weak smile, he filled in his son on
the information he had received. Kado did not look as optimistic after hearing
the diagnosis. “But you know he’s strong, he’ll make it. He has never let us
down before.” Kado rubbed his father’s arm attempting to comfort him.
Kado knew that the love his parents had was
beyond that of most relationships. They were best friends, lovers, partners,
parents, Saints…they shared a love that most people would never experience but
wished for every day. It was killing Hyoga to wait and see if his true love
would live to see tomorrow. Even when Shun had been beaten to a pulp, Hyoga had
not worried as much as he did now.
Shun’s own body was attacking him, not a
tangible enemy that Hyoga could run out and pummel. He was defenseless, unable
to save him from the invisible foe, unable to save the one person he loved
most. He began silently crying again, Kado pulled his head to his chest,
holding the broken man. “I can’t lose him.” Hyoga whispered.
“Hyoga!” A loud booming voice interjected
causing the blond man to look up at the door to the waiting room. It was Ikki,
Shun’s older brother. Hyoga had made five phone calls after he arrived at the
hospital. He had called Ikki, Seiya, Shiryu, Kado, and Aiko, getting every one
of their voicemails. His messages had been calm, stating only that Shun had
collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. He still had not told anyone that he
had preformed CPR on Shun trying to restart his heart.
Thank god Shun made him take that damn CPR
class when the kids were little otherwise Hyoga never would have known exactly
what to do. His Shun, the light of his life, always thinking ahead and keeping
them all organized.
“Ikki.” Hyoga stood up and greeted him with a
hug. “What’s going on? How’s Shun?” Ikki asked in a perplexed tone, he knew
Hyoga would not call him unless it was pretty serious. “He’s experiencing heart
failure. He’s going into surgery…but Ikki…they are concerned about him
recovering because of all the damage he suffered in our fighting.” Ikki could
see the fear in Hyoga’s crystal blue eyes and felt his own panic rise.
“He’s not going to die. Hyoga, he won’t leave
you, he won’t leave his kids.” Ikki pushed aside his own worries to comfort his
brother-in-law. If he knew anything it was that Shun would lay down his own
life for Hyoga and that Hyoga would do the same for Shun. The door opened
again, this time Seiya and Shiryu rushing in. Once they saw Ikki holding Hyoga
in a hug, they knew it was bad.
Ikki filled them in on Shun’s condition, their
faces falling as each word was uttered. Seiya was toting his grandson on his
side, the one year old Michiaki that they
called Miki. Seiya and Miho had their only child when they were twenty eight, a
precious daughter who accidentally got herself pregnant at sixteen.
Now that bundle of joy was their
responsibility, but Seiya did not seem to mind, he loved children. In fact, it
was a blessing to them because they were told they could never have children of
their own after trying for five years. A few months after they got the
devastating news, they found out Miho was indeed pregnant. And now they had
Miki at home, the second baby they always dreamed about.
Miki whimpered when he saw Hyoga crying, he was
a sensitive child. Kado immediately went over to the baby and took him from
Seiya. He would play with Miki and keep him distracted while the four men had a
chance to talk. He looked at the clock, wondering where his bratty sister was.
A nurse entered the room looking for Hyoga.
“Shun will be going into surgery soon, there is a small window of time where you
can visit him before he goes under. Please come with me.” She was talking only
to Hyoga, but the blond wanted Ikki to be able to go as well. “This is his
brother…” Hyoga said to the nurse. “Fine, but only two of you can go.”
“Let Kado go.” Ikki said, looking to his
nephew playing patty-cake with the baby. “No, I don’t want him to see Shun like
this.” Ikki nodded knowing that Kado was just as sensitive as Shun and would
probably end up a huge mess after seeing his father. “If Aiko shows up, tell
her to stay put.” Hyoga told Seiya and Shiryu before they left to follow the
nurse to Shun’s room.
As they walked down the hall, Hyoga felt his
heart pounding, what if this is the last time I ever see him alive? He
remembered a time when Shun had said something similar to him. It was before
they were together as a couple, but it was when he realized that he loved Shun
more than anything else. Hyoga’s thoughts drifted back to that memory.
The Battle of the Serpent King - Hyoga age 15, Shun
age 14
Hyoga stood facing the temple looming ahead of
them. He was hot and sweaty after fighting off hoards of the Serpent King’s
army men. Blood trickled down his face and he lifted his hand to touch the gash
on his forehead. They were waiting for Shiryu to catch up before they entered
to take on their final adversary, the King himself. They needed all five of
their abilities because the Serpent King was capable of multiple attacks at
once.
Shun sat on the rocks near him, fiddling with
his Nebula Chain. Seiya rested on the ground while Ikki paced, ready to fight.
Hyoga was not too worried about this battle, they had faced worse with more
horrifying consequences if they failed. The Serpent King did not even have
Athena hostage as most of the other Battle Gods had managed to achieve.
Instead, he had captured Mu, Shaka, and Milo, using a spell to put them into a
deep sleep. He wanted to harness their powers to destroy and take over the
world. And while the Gold Saints were expendable to a degree, the Bronze Saints
wanted to save their friends and rid themselves of the Serpent King.
Hyoga sat down next to Shun. “Hi Hyoga.” Shun
said quietly, he was obviously bothered by something. “What’s wrong Shun?”
Hyoga asked his best friend, able to read him like a book. “I’m just nervous,
that’s all.” Shun smiled pathetically, pretending to be strong. “Don’t worry,
you’ll be fine.” Hyoga grinned.
“I’m not worried about me.” Shun looked down
at the pebbles under his feet, avoiding Hyoga’s gaze. “The Gold Saints will be
fine too, we’ll save them.” Hyoga missed Shun’s hidden meaning. “I’m not
worried about them either.” Shun turned his eyes up to the blond. They were
shimmering with tears, the light of the setting sun reflecting in them.
Hyoga motioned to Ikki getting a shake of
Shun’s head indicating he was incorrect again. “I’m lost.” Hyoga said with a
chuckle. “I’m worried about you.” Shun blushed, kicking a pebble with his
foot. “Me?” Hyoga was not sure if he was serious or not, but Shun’s shyness
seemed to speak for itself.
“Shun, I’ll be fine. I promise.” Hyoga patted
Shun’s knee receiving another blush from his friend. “What if I never see you
again?” Shun startled Hyoga with his sincere, yet sad question. “Of course
you’ll see me again Shun. Why are you so concerned?”
Hyoga saw something in Shun’s eyes that he had
not seen before in the boy, an unexplainable emotion that touched his heart. He
was already attracted to Shun and assumed they would be friends and companions,
but never anything more. Yet, here it was, staring him in the face, pure
unadulterated concern and love. Did Shun feel the same way? Was he secretly
harboring feelings that left him aching and lonely as well?
“Please don’t leave me.” Shun whimpered,
throwing his arms around Hyoga’s shoulders. The blond was taken back by the
hug, but quickly returned the embrace, holding Shun close to him. “I won’t
leave you, I love you.” Hyoga heard the words spill from his lips before he
could stop them. Shun responded by squeezing him tighter. “I love you too
Hyoga.”
It was not a declaration of romantic love, only
love between friends. At least that is where they left it for nearly three long
years. During the battle with the Serpent King, Hyoga watched Shun fight out of
the corner of his eye. If anything happened to Shun, he would be devastated.
He loved all his friends, but Shun was special, he was buried deep in his heart.
A wild attack of a demon claw swung from behind
Shun, he would never see it in time. Hyoga dodged the blow coming at him and
flipped high into the air to block the claw from tearing into Shun’s back. His
foot was clipped by the attack and he fell face down into the hard floor. Shun
turned around and saw what happened, rushing to Hyoga’s side.
“Hyoga, are you okay?” Shun held the
blond’s
head in his lap, protecting them both with his chains. “I’m fine, go fight.”
Hyoga smiled back as pain tore through his body. “You saved me.” Shun was
being sentimental, but it was the wrong time for it. “SHUN!” Ikki yelled out
when he noticed the two Saints hiding behind Andromeda’s defensive wall.
“Go. I’ll be okay.” Hyoga tried to stand up,
wobbling onto his knees. Shun did not want to leave him, but returned to the
battle. Finally making it to his feet, Hyoga pushed his feelings for Shun aside
and powered up his cosmos. He would not back down from the fight as long as he
was still alive and he would not let his personal feelings dictate his ability
to stay focused. They had all learned that lesson in Poseidon’s Sanctuary after
they were easily swayed by a shape shifting Marine Shogun.
The five Bronze Saints had to combine their
strongest attacks at one time from five star points around the Serpent King to
bring him down. Hyoga made it to his location, burning up his cosmos as they
prepared. Shun was at the star point to his right, flaring his cosmos as well.
This was what they were born for, this is what they dedicated their lives to.
Seiya yelled their battle cry, alerting them
all to attack. Hyoga released his Aurora Thunder Attack, the freezing energy
blasting out of him and into the Serpent King. The enemy fell hard under their
crippling blows. “He’s down!” Seiya called out, running over to the King’s
body. Hyoga dropped to his knees, his life force drained from using such a
powerful technique after getting hurt. Shun was once again at his side,
grateful that Hyoga was still alive and well.
Shun wrapped his arm around Hyoga’s waist,
helping him stand. “See, I’m still here.” Hyoga teased the green haired boy as
they limped away. Shun only smiled and held onto the Siberian tighter. How
can I love anyone else when he is smiling at me like that?
Present Day
Hyoga and Ikki stepped into Shun’s hospital room, the memory fading as he saw
his husband. Ikki walked over to the bed first as Hyoga stood at the door, unable to move. “Shun, how are you doing?” Ikki
asked, gently touching his brother’s hand. “Ikki?” Shun was dazed, no doubt
jacked up on heavy sedatives and pain killers. “Yeah it’s me. Hyoga is here
too.” Ikki waved for Hyoga to come over.
He did not want to cry in front of Shun, he
could not show him how worried he really was. “Shun.” Hyoga leaned over the
bed, kissing his forehead. He brushed a loose strand of hair off his cheek and
then he saw it, Shun’s magnificent smile. “Thank you love.” Shun sounded
coherent.
Hyoga choked back a sob and smiled, both happy
and sad at the same time. They called each other ‘love’ as a pet name and for
some reason Hyoga was elated to hear it again. “The doctors say you should be
fine once you have this operation.” Ikki spoke, breaking the intimate moment as
he thought Hyoga would emotionally snap.
“I’ll be fine, right Hyoga?” Shun squeezed
Ikki’s hand but looked at his lover. “Of course you’ll be fine.” Hyoga was not
confident in what he said, but had little choice. He very well could not wail
about how he was petrified that he might lose him. Shun did not need that
stress before his operation. “Kado is here.” Hyoga mentioned.
“Aiko is probably shopping.” Shun smiled
again, he knew his daughter too well. Wild horses could not drag her out of a
sale rack, especially not a phone call from dear old Dad. “She’ll be here, I
left word for her.” Hyoga was surprised to see Shun so calm. “Seiya and
Shiryu, they are here too. Seiya brought Miki.” Ikki informed Shun.
Shun looked at his brother, then at Hyoga.
“Seems like everyone is here. Is someone dying?” Shun joked, his chuckle
turning into a cough as it was too much for him. “Shun! That’s not funny.”
Ikki scolded him. “I was just trying to lighten things up.” Shun could see the
pain in Hyoga’s eyes and wanted to alleviate it as much as possible.
He was still a beautiful young man in Hyoga’s
eyes, the boy he fell in love with. The years were easy on him, Shun had always
looked young. But he looked his age as he lay in the hospital bed. It was the
first time Hyoga saw him this way. Hyoga himself had aged gracefully, always
distinguished and handsome. Women flocked around him wherever they went while
Shun attracted the attention of both sexes, especially younger gay men who
idolized him.
“Time to go.” The nurse called from the door.
“We need to put him under.” Hyoga looked at Shun desperately, not wanting to
leave his side. “It’s okay Hyoga, I won’t leave you. I promise.” Shun
smiled. Ikki leaned over and kissed his forehead and said his goodbyes, wishing
him luck. Once he left, Hyoga planted a kiss on Shun’s lips. At first it was
just a peck, but Shun opened his mouth and instigated a deeper connection.
Hyoga focused on every detail, this could be their last kiss and he wanted to
savor every second of it. After what seemed an eternity, the kiss ended, Hyoga
had to leave. “I love you Shun.” He whispered, his eyes growing moist. “I
love you too Hyoga. I’ll see you soon.”
Hyoga reluctantly walked away as a team of
nurses started coming in the room. He stood in the doorway, watching the scene,
still in disbelief. An arm suddenly wrapped around his waist, pulling him
away. He turned to see Ikki shuffling him back to the waiting room. “I want to
see him.” Hyoga whimpered. “It’s better to go back, don’t put yourself through
any more than you have to. Plus, Aiko is here and she needs you.”
Thinking of his daughter, Hyoga agreed and let
Ikki lead him. Aiko bounded into his arms as soon as she saw him. “Daddy! I
got here as soon as I could. I was getting my nails done, I’m so sorry!” Aiko
had a flare for dramatics and Hyoga sighed as he patted her gold streaked
hair. She got her hair done at least once a week since she had to be on the
cutting edge of style. “Shun is going into surgery now, they said about three
hours.” Hyoga looked at everyone there, his friends, his family, all hoping for
the best. This was going to be the hardest three hours of his life.
