Expect The Unexpected
Chapter Two: Expect The Unexpected
The next morning, the couple woke up two entirely different people. Brock was still sound asleep, and so were the Pokémon. They quickly put their clothes back on, fearing that the breeder might wake up at any moment. They sat down relieved but still nervous, what if he had heard them? But fear struck Misty\'s heart even harder as she looked down on the bed, the blood still fresh on the white cotton sheets.
“Was that supposed to happen?” She asked, the beginnings of tears forming in her blue eyes. “My period ended two weeks ago.”
“I don\'t know...” Ash muttered worriedly. “We can\'t tell Brock, he\'ll murder us...”
The only thing they knew to do was to wash the sheets. Thus they hurriedly took the sheets off the bed and took them down to the laundry room in the basement of the Pokémon Center. They washed and dried them; it was still early; only seven in the morning. Thank God they had gone to bed so early, any later and the room could have been full of Trainers doing their own laundry. In about forty-five minutes they were done, and preceded back to the room hoping that Brock was not yet awake. They made the bed, and sat down just as their best friend was getting up.
“Urg!” The breeder yawned as he stretched his arms. “That was the best night I\'ve had in weeks!”
“Yeah...uh, us too Brock...” Mentioned Ash as he scratched the back of his head nervously when he recalled how great it felt last night.
“I\'d glad you decided to stop at the Pokémon Center Ash, I\'m getting really sick of sleeping in sleeping bags on the cold hard ground.” The twenty one year old explained as he stood up. Obviously he had heard nothing last night.
On the top bunk over Brock, Pikachu and Togepi were just getting up as well.
(I\'m hungry!) The yellow electric type pikad.
(Me too!) Togepi whined mimicking Pikachu\'s every move.
Brock got ready and they went to the cafeteria to eat breakfast. The rest of the day went perfectly normal on their travels to Pewter City. Brock was really eager to visit his father and his little brothers and sisters, so they decided to stay a few weeks.
~* ))O(( *~
It was the second week of December, toward the end of their visit, while spending some tin thn the nearby park that Misty felt dreadfully ill.
“Misty, what\'s wrong?” Asked Ash worriedly. They had been playing in the snow all day. An ongoing snowball battle had ensued which Ash forgot all about as he noticed his partner in crime clutching her stomach.
“I think I have to...” Luckily there was a garbage can nearby because Misty threw up not once but three times.
Brock left his siblings playing, and walked over to Ash as he shook the snow out of his hair.
“It was probably just something she ate. I wouldn\'t worry if I were you.” Brock explained with a laugh. He thought it was funny how Ash cared so much for Misty and his Pokémon, but never cared about what happened to himself.
“Yeah... I guess...” Mumbled Ash as he walked over to his girlfriend. “Are you ok Mist?”
“I think...” However she threw up again.
A few seconds later Ash took her to sit on a park bench, and gave her a drink of water. Her face was slightly red, and she was sweating despite the cold winter weather. Togepi and Pikachu also caught site of the incident and came over to find out what was wrong.
(What\'s wrong with mommy?) Togepi asked Pikachu.
(Ash will help her.) Stated Pikachu, who wasn\'t paying all that much attention anyway; he just wanted to whack Chikorita and Totodile upside their heads with snowballs.
“You ok now Misty?” Questioned the ebony haired young man as he pushed the hair from out of her face and fixed her knitted hat.
“Yeah, sort of... I don\'t now what happened, one minute I was feeling fine and the next I started throwing up. I hope I\'m not sick.” Explained Misty in-between sips of water. “It is flu season you know.”
They decided to forget about it, as Brock said; it was probably something she had eaten. However the next morning was the same, and the next day after that as well. On the third day, Ash had had enough.
“That\'s it Misty, you\'re probably sick and you don\'t even know it, I\'m taking you to the doctors.” Ash addressed her with as much authority as he could. After all he was Misty\'s boyfriend, and he had responsibility for her.
“Ok... fine.” She said weakly as she held her stomach in pain.
“Or... would you like Brock to take you, he knows more then me about that sortta stuff.” Ash gave her the option knowing very well what the answer would be.
“No I want you to take me.” Misty responded with a sour look on her face. She hated doing stuff with Brock; he was such an annoyance. “I don\'t want to think about what would happen if the doctor is a pretty girl.”
Ash and Misty left Brock\'s house (they left all their Pokémon there too) and went to Pewter City Hospital. When they got there they had to fill out dozens of papers, and then had to wait for a very long time, but finally the nurse called Misty\'s name and they were led to a room.
“The doctor will be in shortly Ms. Waterflower.” Smiled the nurse as she closed the door.
“Great; more...” T he red head was about to complain but before she could finish her sentence the doctor walked in. “...waiting.”
“Hello my name is Dr. Scully and you two must be Ash and Misty. Now; what seems to be the problem young man?” Inquired the doctor, who was a pretty red head lady in her mid thirties.
“Oh... it\'s not me; it\'s my girlfriend, for the past few days she\'s been throwing up a lot.” Explained Ash seriously. “I\'m afraid she might have some sort of stomach virus or something. The flu is going around.”
“Girlfriend huh... well is that all?” Dr. Scully asked dully, she seemed to already know what was wrong.
“Yeah, that\'s pretty much it.” Confirmed Misty.
The doctor started taking notes as she glanced from one teen to the other shaking her head in aversion.
“And now; when was your last menstrual period?” The doctor asked in monotone.
“Um... I honestly don\'t remember. I don\'t really keep track.” Misty whispered, she was a little embarrassed about not knowing, but she was wondering what it had to do with her being sick.
“Hmm...” Dr. Scully muttered as she scribbled down notes, but Ash interrupted.
“Well, is she gonna be ok doc?” He asked. Ash seemed to be more nervous than his girlfriend was.
Dr. Scully opened up a cabinet, pulled out a cup, and handed it to Misty.
“Here, I need a urine sample.”
“Huh?” Misty was confused.
“It\'s for a test. Now please hurry, I have other patients to tend to.” Dr. Scully knew exactly what was wrong with her, although she just needed to make sure.
A few minutes later the young red head was back from the restroom. She gave the cup to the doctor, still quite confused. Dr. Scully took out a little bottle filled with a clear liquid and poured it into a test tube with Misty\'s urine, where it automatically turned blue. She wrote down more notes and walked out of the room when she was done.
“Did you see that?” Misty asked in a panicky voice. “There must be something really wrong with me.”
“Don\'t worry Mist...” Ash whispered trying hard to stay calm. “She\'ll know what\'s up and she\'ll give you some medicine.”
The couple waited in the tiny room for what seemed like an eternity. The heat was blowing into the room with an odd rattling noise from the air vents. While the radio station, which played quietly over the intercom system, gave a boring modern jazz piano piece. The music annoyed Ash, but his consciousness took notice of these things as he waited. Finally, Dr. Scully came back in; she looked pleased as well as concerned at the same time as she tried to figure out the right words to say.
“Uh... I don\'t know if this is going to be good or bad news...” She looked at them both. “...you two look so young...”
However before she could finish she noticed the tears trickling down the teen girls face.
“What\'s wrong with me?” Misty cried wiping the drops from her cheeks.
“Oh, no... honey, don\'t cry... it\'s not that there\'s something wrong with you... in fact it\'s perfectly natural... you\'re pregnant!” Dr. Scully felt very sorry for the poor young girl.
“What the fu... but... how? She\'s only fifteen! She\'s too young!” Ash yelled in astonishment, yet at the same time a tiny little light went on in his heart, and he wasn\'t angry at all.
“How do you think? Teenagers... never thinking of the consequences of sexual intercourse.” Dr. Scully shouted with an aggravated sigh. “You had unprotected sex, and you thought, well, I can\'t get her knocked up and if I do, aw to hell with it I\'ll leave and go screw another girl that isn\'t fat and ugly!”
At this Ash and Misty stared at her in fright.
“I would never leave Misty! No matter what!” Ash yelled after he realized that the doctor was accusing him of being a horrible boyfriend.
“Yeah right, stop kidding yourself kid, once you pop you just can\'t stop. I suppose that you can\'t afford an abortion can you?” She inquired of them.
“What are you talking about?” Misty shouted, she felt as if a Zubat or Drowzee had used it\'s Confuse Ray on her.
“Well you you\'re keeping it, good luck kid, cause you ain\'t gonna have your little beau over here helping you out.” And with that Dr. Scully left the room with a slam of the door.
“What is with her?” Misty questioned angrily.
“I don\'t know, let\'s get the hell out of here.” Ash grabbed their coats but before they could get out of the room the nurse from before entered. “Don\'t mind her...” She apologized. “Dr. Scully has had some bad experiences in her life and she tends to take them out on others if she hasn\'t taken her meds.”
She began to scan over Dr. Scully\'s notes. There was a picture of a hangman in the top left hand corner with the words “MEN SUCK!” in bold handwriting. Other “notes” included, “men don\'t need dicks” and “I hope her baby dies”. She closed the folder to glance at the teenage couple and let out a small sigh.
“Well... I wouldn\'t exactly say congratulations, the two of you are so young but... you are going to be parents.” The nurse opened up the cabinet, took out a few booklets, and handed them to Misty. “Here read these, they\'ll answer any questions you may have. I\'m giving you a due date of August fifteen so mark that day down, and Misty, please take it easy you\'re only about a month, don\'t do anything too strenuous. You will need to visit a gynecologist once a month I suggest you make an appointment with one right away. Unfortunately, were aren\'t a clinic so, so this is all we can do for you now. Take care of yourself Misty... there\'s going to be quite a few changes going on in your body. Pregnancy is a wonderful experience but you have to be careful.” She then turned to Ash and whispered in his ear as Misty flipped through the pamphlets. “Ash, take good care of her, don\'t be like those other boys.”
She gave one last look at them; then looked up to the ceiling and smiled a small sign of “I\'ll keep in them in my prayers; but God please help them.” She walked out of the room and closed the door behind her. Ash and Misty stood there silent for a few moments unable to communicate. When they had first heard the words they were shocked, but at the same time felt overwhelmed, excited, and happy. Who knows what their life was going to be like now that they had a baby on the way? Misty could hardly believe it, to actually know that she was carrying another living human being inside of her. Her body was now a shelter for a developing baby; her baby, and Ash\'s baby; growing in her womb. However the sudden happiness and burst of joy came crashing down as Ash cursed:
“Fuck! What the hell are we going to tell Brock? He\'s gonna kick our asses!”
He opened the door for Misty after helping her put on her coat and they walked down the hall holding each other\'s gloved hands. They strolled out of the building and outside into the brilliant winter wonderland.
“Ash... please don\'t curse... maybe... well, maybe we can wait a while before we tell him.” She explained hopefully. “We can act like it was only what I ate, and that I\'m not really sick... well I\'m really not anyway...” But Misty suddenly stopped on the sidewalk. She looked down at her stomach, which was still perfectly flat under the bulky winter clothes; she realized that in a few months, she wouldn\'t be able to hide it, even if she did wear really loose clothing.
“What?” Ash asked when Misty stopped. “What\'s wrong?”
“It\'s just that, in a couple of months we aren\'t going to be able to hide it anymore.” Misty explained sadly.
“Damn... you\'re right, we have to get out of here... want to run away?” Ash posed the question even though he knew it was a stupid thing to say; nevertheless it was the only thing he could think of to say at the time.
“No, we can\'t do that! He\'ll probably find out in a few days anyway, he is a Pokémon Breeder, trust me, he knows!” Misty sighed. She didn\'t want to run away. She didn\'t want to make her sisters worried or Ash\'s mom for that matter. Although... she didn\'t care about leaving Brock, but where exactly were they going to go?
They stood silent, just standing there on the busy sidewalk gazing in each other\'s eyes as snow flurries began to lightly dance all around them. Several types of flying Pokémon pecked at the snow in search of breadcrumbs as holiday shoppers walked quickly from store to store. The world around them seemed to disappear and at that moment Ash smiled, as he took both her hands in his.
“You know, Misty, no matter what I\'m always going to love you and I from now on I am never going to leave your sight. I\'m really going to like the idea of us having a baby together. It\'s just that... well... I\'m only mad because I don\'t know how Brock is going to take this.”
“Yeah, me too.” Misty confessed. “I\'m really glad that it\'s our baby, mine and yours.”
Ash kissed and hugged her tightly not ever wanting to let go, except after that he suddenly stopped and looked down at Misty\'s midsection.
“It\'s gonna get harder for us to be so close.” He said with a laugh, but really he didn\'t know if he was going to hurt the baby by hugging Misty so firmly.
“I know... and isn\'t it going to be weird, being so young, and having a little boy or girl calling us mommy and daddy?” Misty laughed.
“I didn\'t think of that, but I wouldn\'t mind. I think I\'d make a great dad! And Misty, the way I see you taking care of Togepi, I know you\'re gonna be a great mom.” Ash said excitedly, he now felt that nothing else in the world mattered except for Misty, the baby and him. They kissed again and began walking back to Brock\'s house.
