“Kaoru-dono! Time to eat."
Keshin was outside cooking riceballs for breakfast when Kenji walked over there with two buckets of water on a bar over his shoulder.
"Kenji, it's time to eat. Call your mother and your siblings," Kenshin said.
"Yes, father." Kenji said and then walked back to the house to do as his father bid.
Kenshin put the hot food in the plate and headed inside. He saw that everyone was at the table already. Chaos was everywhere but depite that, or maybe because of it, he felt satisfied.
Kaoru was sitting and was trying to calm everyone down. Kenji, his oldest son, was helping his mother get everything settled down.
"Kenshin, why don't we go eat outside. It'll be fun and we haven't done that in a while," Kaoru said.
"Okay, Kaoru, I'll take the food out then. Anyone want to help me set the table outside?"
A series of murmurs and grunts answered him.
Kenshin smiled. "I guess that means no then."
He went outside carrying plates of food and a tablecloth slung around his shoulder. He set the table and put the plates on top. He saw leaves around the tree and thought that he might as well rake them after breakfast. Heading towards the house to call his family to eat, he didn't notice the little urchin nearby.
"Come now. Breakfast is ready," Kenshin called.
A blur of gray and black stole the breakfast of ohagi off the table that was outside under its tree. Quickly, the blur ate the majority of the ohagi and stuffed the rest in a pouch.
When done, the blur raced up the cherry tree leaving the empty platter on the table.
While the little urchin napped, Kenshin, Kaoru and their brood came to the table.
"Kenshin where is our breakfast?" Kaoru inquired when she saw the empty platter that once held ohagi.
"Oro?" was all Kenshin had to say for himself.
Tomoko who didn't want her parents to fight said, "I'll make rice balls and miso soup. Anyone can make them."
"Yeah," quipped Shinta, "but only you and okaa-chan make them taste like mud balls."
Furious Tomoko chased her twin brother around the courtyard of the dojo.
Kenshin sighed when saw this. He wondered what happened with the food and he thought that he might as well figure it out just as soon as breakfast we done.
"Shinta, stop teasing your sister. And thank you, Tomoko, for offering but I think I'll cook the food myself."
Kenshin, who knew how horrible it is when Tomoko cooked, thought this was for the best. It seesm to him that Tomoko inherited the lack of talent in cooking from her mother.
He set out to cook again while everyone else lazed around.
After he was done cooking, Kenji came by and helped him bring the food to the table.
They both set the table and everyone sat underneath the old tree. There were lots of chatter and laughter as they ate. Kenshin was the first one to notice that a little girl was standing not far from where they ate.
The girl seemed to be very young. And she seemed stubborn and determined. Kenshin rose to see what she wanted.
"I know my brother is in here somewhere. So you better not try to hide him anymore. It won't work. I have to get him home now because my mother is worrying about him already," she said immediately once Kenshin was within hearing range.
"I'm sorry, but do I know you? Or your brother?" Kenshin asked.
"Never mind. I'll look for him myself."
The girl walked up to the table where the family was eating. They just stared at her stupidly as she started shouting her head off.
"YATEN! YATEN! Where are you? I know you're here somewhere. You better come out now."
Suddenly, a small, dark head appeared from above the table. The head had rumpled hair and puffy eyes.
"There you are. We have to get home now," the girl said. When she saw the bits and pieces of food around his mouth, the girl shrieked. "Don't tell me you stole their food! I'm gonna kill you!"
The boy quickly climbed down the tree because he knew that staying up there would have been suicide since his sister was such a great climber.
"Now, now, it's not that big of a deal. See? They're eating already."
But the girl paid no heed as she ran towards him.
She stopped in midair still flailing as Kaoru grasped the back of her shirt. Kaoru held the squirming girl and looked from her to the boy standing sheepishly in front of them.
"So, you're the one who took our food?" Kaoru asked with surprise and impatience in her voice.
"Yes," he answered meekly.
Kenshin decided that introductions were needed. He thought that he had never seen his children so quiet and still. It seems they were anticipating the reaction that their mother would show. Kaoru never was a clam or collected person.
"Kaoru, why don't you put her down and get some things straight." Kaoru released the hold she had on the child's shirt. Kenshin kneeled down in front of her and said, "Hello. I'm Kenshin. What's your name?"
"I'm Ricket. And that fool is my brother, Shin."
Kenshin took a good look at the brother and sister. They must be from a poor family. They both looked ragged with their old clothes and rumpled hair but at least they looked relatively clean. Well, in Ricket's case, she's clean.
Shin wasn't. He had leaves in his hair, smudges of mud on his shirt and food on his face. Kenshin's rice balls on his face.
"Well, why don't we all sit down and eat first then we'll get everything settled."
Everyone settled down and ate. The usual atmosphere of chaos was once again in place. After eating, Shinta teased his sister Kasumi with jokes about her voice.
Kasumi had a very beautiful voice and she was proud of it. She was a little vain about it, too. She never took insults about it. She jumped her brother and started attacking him.
"Don't make fun of my voice, you midget. You know very well that it is very good."
"Right, sis. Whatever you say. You know we all just patronize you. Hey, stop that," Shinta said as Kasumi started to pull at his hair.
"Take it back! Take it back!" Kasumi screamed at his face.
"No, I won't! Stop pulling my hair!"
Chaos erupted all around as Kenji tried to pull Kasumi off Shinta. Their other siblings merely stood and watched. They also cheered and jeered as the two childred fought. Kenshin looked at Kaoru helplessly. Kaoru took her Kendo stick and hit the table at a certain angle, making a loud cracking sound.
At the silence that followed, Ricket, curious about Kasumi's voice, asked, "Why don't we just listen to her sing?"
At this, Kasumi got off her brother and said, "Yes, that's a very good idea. Then you'll see what kind of a liar my brother is."
Kasumi sang a lovely rendition of one of the lullabies that Kaoru loved to sing to them. Kenshin felt very proud of his daughter.
Kaoru clapped the loudest at the end of her recital while everyone else joined her.
Ricket was awed by the beauty of Kasumi's voice. But she was brought back to reality when out of the corner of her eye, she saw Shin trying to grab some food.
"I'm sorry, everyone. But we really do have to go now. Come on, Shin. Stop hogging everyone's food and let's go home," Ricket said with authority.
"Awww, sis," he complained by dutifully followed his sister.
Kenshin was still curious about them. But he had a feeling it wasn't the last time they would be meeting the odd siblings.
