Chapter 2:

Sakura threw herself on the bed, actually wanting treamream in frustration for what had to be the first time in her life. She couldn’t believe him! He had been so rude, so inconsiderate, so...so...

“ARGGH!!” she screamed, trying to find an outlet for her anger.

“What’s up with all the screaming, Sakura?”

Sakura blinked, using her magical senses to locate Kero, who, it seemed, was floating about a foot above her head.

“Nothing,” she muttered, burying her face in her pillow.

Kero looked at her in surprise, his small eyebrows raised. “Nothing!? You come in, almost throw yourself on top of me, interrupt my VERY nice dream about chocolate pudding, and you say it’s nothing!? Come on, Sakura. Spill.”

Sakura sighed, rolling over on her back. “There’s this new kid at school. His name’s Syaoran, and he’s such a jerk!”

Kero blinked. “How so?”

“Well, when I introduced myself to him he completely ignored me! Then, when I tried again at lunch he accused me of stealing the Clow Cards!”

Kero froze, dropping the can of chocolate pudding that he had been trying to open. “He WHAT!?”

“He said I stole them, and, on top of that, he said that I no right being the mistress of the cards!” she said, her voice vibrating with her anger.

“Sakura, this is serious,” he said, pg bag back and forth in midair.

She glared in his general direction. “I know that, Kero,” she snapped.

Kero sighed. “Yes, and I know you know that. I’m just saying that someone outside of Japan knowing that you have the cards is very bad.”

“I wonder how he knew?” she asked, sitting up as she did so.

Kero rubbed his chin. “Hmmm...That’s a good question. He had to have known before he came here.”

“How come?” she asked.

“Well, think about it. He knew that you were the mistress of the cards, and the only people who know that information, let alone know how to recognize you, are very high up in the magic world.”

Sakura blinked. “So?”

“So, the only people with that much power come from China. And if they know that you have the cards then they are going to want them back.”

Sakura’s eyes widened. “Wait a minute! Syaoran is from Hong Kong!”

Kero stopped pacing and turned towards her. “He is? Hmm....Did you sense anything unusual about him, Sakura? Anything odd?”

“Hmm....Well, when I first met him I noticed that his aura felt different. It felt...” she paused, unsure how to say exactly how it had felt.

“It felt...ancient. Like he had a power that had been given to him from someone else.”

He frowned. “Ancient? Hmmm...His family must be very powerful then. Did you happen to get his last name, or were you too busy plotting his death?” he asked, grinning as Sakura placed the can of chocolate pudding in front of him.

“His last name? Hmm....I think it was...Li. Yes, that’s it, Li,” she said, a note of certainty in her voice.

He froze. Li? As in the Li Clan? The descendants of Clow Reed? The most powerful family in the world? Oh, this was bad...

“Are you sure?” he asked, dreading the answer.

Sakura nodded her head. “Yeah, I’m sure.”

Kero groaned. “We are in a world of trouble,” he said, losing his appetite completely.

“Why?”

“You need to understand Sakura, that if that boy is here for the cards then the magical balance must be off.”

Sakura blinked. Magical balance? What in the world was that?

“What do you mean?” she asked, reaching for the chocolate pudding, since it sounded like Kero wasn’t going to eat it. Oh well, more for her.

Kero sighed. “I mean, that if he’s here, then the amount of magic in the world is off. Each person in this world is granted a certain amount of magic, and they are only supposed to use as much as they are given. Some never use their magic, while some reach their maximum and try their best to surpass it. Now, you have been given an extraordinary amount, but if ever tried to surpass your maximum then you would draw magic from other forces on the planet, which would upset the balance.”

Sakura blinked. “Oh. So, if I used more than I was supposed to then I would take magic from other people?”

Kero nodded.

“But what harm would that do?” she asked, taking a bite of pudding.

“More than you would think,” Kero said. “The magical balance is there to keep peace between the light and dark forces of magic. If one side is more powerful then the other, then the less powerful side does its best to ‘catch up.’ Say, for instance, the dark side was less powerful. It would create more and more dark magic to make itself even with the light side.”

“Well, how can that be bad?”

“Well, imagine that you had more magic than you were supposed to because you had gotten it from an outside source. It wouldn’t be your natural magic. Now, when the dark side begins to produce more magic, you would have to face the dark magic and contain it. But if your extra magic wasn’t your true magic, and you didn’t know how to use it...”

“What? What would happen?”

Kero sighed, wearily rubbing a paw over his eyes. “The dark magic would overwhelm you, and you would be destroyed.”

“Destroyed?” Sakura asked.

“Yes, and, on top of that, the dark magic would gain control of the magical balance, giving it enough power to wipe out the light side,” he said, his voice grave with foreboding.

“But I thought that youd thd that dark and light try to stay even with one another.”

“They do, but if such a powerful person as yourself was wiped out, then light wouldn’t have anyone else to put as much magic in.”

Sakura looked at him. “But I thought you said that everyone has magic.”

“Yes, they do. But there is only a few people on your side who hold a large amount of power, and if one of them was destroyed, the others wouldn’t be able to hthe the extra amount of magic needed to recreate the balance.”

“Oh,” said Sakura, nodding in sudden understanding. “They couldn’t because they would be holding more then they are supposed to, which would upset the balance even more.”

“Correct,” said Kero, eyeing the remains of the pudding.

“So, Li’s here because the magical balance is off? Hmm...I wonder who messed it up?” she asked, her eyes closed in concentration.

“Well, it has to be someone in the Li Clan if he’s here. They wouldn’t send the future leader of the Clan here if it wasn’t important.”

“He’s the future leader!? Him? Oh, I can’t believe it!”

“Believe it.”

“Well, maybe he would let us help.”

Kero blinked, and almost fell over in shock. “You want to what!?”

“I want to help him. That way, he wouldn’t have any reason to take the cards, because we’d be there with him. Plus, I can show him exactly WHY I am the mistress of the cards,” she said, her voice stern.

Kero sighed. This was a bad idea, but it looked as if she wasn’t going to change her mind.

“Alright. I don’t like it, but you do know what you’re doing.”

Sakura grinned, and leaned over to hug him. “Thanks, Kero!”

He blushed, and struggled out of her grip. “Hold on. You want to do this, I understand, but I’ll only help on one condition.”

Sakura tilted her head curiously. “What’s that?”

“I want the rest of the pudding,” he said, ing ing at the half empty can.

Sakura slowly smiled. “You know what, Kero?” she asked, picking him up again. “I’ll do better than that. I’ll make you a whole pot of pudding. How does that sound?”

“There’s only one word for it,” he said, his voice serious.

“What’s that?”

“BONZAII!!”
