Haunting Memories
Chapter Two: …Come Back to Haunt Me in the Day
日の私に通うためにもどって来られる
………………
Toboe sat up abruptly, sweat running down his flushed face as he tried to slow down his rushed breathing. He reached up with shaking fingers to the side of his head and the other hand reached towards his stomach. Relief surged through his trembling form when he realized that his body wasn’t covered in gashes and bruises; he was as whole as he ever was. The pain from the dream still lingered as he continued the inspection of his body, still breathing roughly. After a few more moments of this, the copper wolf stood up slowly and walked in a small circle. He didn’t notice the pair of amber eyes that were focused on him until the owner of them spoke.
“Did you have another nightmare?” Toboe jumped about three feet into the air before turning around and facing Tsume who was about a yard away from him. The gray wolf gave him a once over before turning away from him and looking out into the morning sun. Toboe fidgeted silently and the older wolf felt his anxiety.
“Do you want to talk about it or should I leave you alone?” Toboe was shocked again. Tsume usually never seemed to care about anyone else but himself, but lately it seemed that the walls that the older wolf had put around himself were starting to recede. ‘It’s because of you,’ Kiba had told him when the youngest member of the pack had asked. Toboe was starting to believe that comment. Tsume only acted this way around him. With Kiba, Hige, or anyone else, Tsume was still cold and distant, but not as much as before. The difference wasn’t great, but if you were observant enough you could see the difference.
Toboe stayed silent and the two gazed at each other before Tsume looked away. “I guess that means no, huh, kid?” Toboe smiled slightly and shook his head, even though Tsume couldn’t see the gesture. Then, for the first time, Toboe actually noticed that the others weren’t there.
“Hey, Tsume, where are Kiba and Hige?” Toboe said looking around. Tsume shook his head and smirked slightly at the pup. “You really need to pay attention to your surrounding more, kid. They went out to get food, where do you think they would have gone?” Toboe just shook his head and joined Tsume to look out at the sun. The red hues still lingered on the horizon from the sunrise and the entire scene was comforting. Toboe smiled softly as he felt the last few memories of the nightmare wash away.
“I’m going out for a while,” Toboe said softly as he walked into the sunshine, narrowing his eyes as the glare hit him. Tsume didn’t say anything, he just fixed him with his infamous glare. Toboe ignored it knowing that the older wolf didn’t want to point blank ask him where he was going, that would show concern for the pup. “I’m going to the stream that we found yesterday. If the others come back, please tell them where I am.” With that Toboe bounded away, feeling Tsume’s eyes still resting on him as he ran into the forest.
…………
Toboe walked through the thick throng of trees and bushes as he made his way to the stream that he and the rest of the pack had found the day before. It was somewhat dark in the thick of trees as the sun wasn’t able to penetrate the canopy of leaves and branches as well. Toboe thought back to the dream that he had been having for the past three nights and shuddered as the old pain came back to him.
…
“You worthless piece of shit!” Another foot was dug into his already bruised side. He shrieked in pain as the harsh blows shoved him back several feet. He bumped against the cold brick wall and tried to get up and move away from the pain that was being inflicted on his already frail body. He knew that he couldn’t get away; they would beat him until they thought that his punishment was enough or until they got tired. Both instances lasted long so he hoped that he would pass out before then as he almost always did.
They kept beating him until he began to cry out in pain. He screamed over and over again trying to shield his broken body from their assault. He curled up into a ball and tried to ignore the blows. They kept coming. Soon he gave up completely and surrendered into the darkness again.
“Well that was more than what had been expected from you,” one of the men said when he kicked Toboe in the temple to make sure that the kid wasn’t faking unconsciousness. “You lasted a lot longer than you normally do. Maybe we’re not doing our job good enough…” They picked him up and dragged him back to “The Place” (1) not caring if his head bumped against the walls or if his skin scraped against them, putting more scars on his already marred skin.
…
Toboe shook his head and wrapped his arms around his small body. He glanced at his arms and gently ran two fingers over the old scars. They were either slightly lighter than his already pale skin or a pink in color. Their thickness or dept depended on how hard his captors had decided to mar him. Most of them were deep and Toboe cold still remember how harsh they had been to him. He shook head and kept walking along the path to the stream, thinking of how his friends had never noticed the marks on his arms, or if they had they had never asked about them. ‘Maybe they don’t want to invade my privacy,’ he thought. ‘Or maybe they don’t care…’ He shook his head again, the rust-colored locks falling into tired and apprehensive eyes. “That’s not true,” he told himself out loud. “If they didn’t care about me they wouldn’t let me tag along and hold them back. They would have ditched me a long time ago.”
Toboe smirked slightly to himself as he thought of the fact that he wasn’t that much of a burden to the pack at all. Maybe on the outside his was weak and naïve, but in truth he was possibly stronger than any of them. He held ancient magic inside of him, magic that, if used correctly could even open Rakuen, the help of Tsuki no Hana, of course. Toboe frowned as his thoughts drifted to Cheza; the pack hadn’t seen her in such a long time. Kiba was holding himself together for the sake of the others but if you paid close enough attention you could tell that he was worried about her.
Toboe sighed softly as he finally walked out of the darker woods into the bright sunshine. He had to let his hazel-amber eyes adjust to the glare again as he gazed out at the peaceful stream that was only a few feet away from him. The clear water caught the sun’s rays and scattered the light all around him. The way the light hit the water made it seem as though diamonds were resting over the sheet of blue. Toboe grinned wickedly and rushed out towards the water and leapt in; scattering diamonds of light everywhere. He rose back to the surface and shook his head spraying more water everywhere. He swam around happily for a few moments searching for anything in the water that might interest him. As he found none, he began to regret jumping into the water without thinking. His clothes were wet and his boots, which were pretty sturdy, wouldn’t be a lot of fun to run in because they were now waterlogged. ‘Humph, I could have at least taken my shirt and boots off; oh well, the sun is so bright and warm that by the time I get back I should be mostly dry anyway.’
Toboe swam around for a little while longer before emerging from the water. He shivered as he shook as much water that he could from his body. He pulled off his shirt and his boots and set them out to dry over a rock after he wrung out the soaked fabric. He yawned and stretched, reaching up towards his left shoulder. He ran his fingers down another scar that was quite long as it ran nearly to his forearm. Touching them brought more unpleasant memories as well as a peculiar tingle that ran down his spine so he stopped. His ears perked up when he heard a rustle in the trees and bushes behind him.
Toboe whipped around. He stood there, utterly still, trying hard to block out of the other sounds the woods in front of him and focus on the one that had startled him earlier. ‘I feel a presence near me…who, or what is it?’ He stared at the spot that he thought he heard the sound come from. He kept watching and then decided to turn back around to face the stream again.
The rustling sound grew a bit louder and sounded a lot closer than it had last time. Toboe raised his right hand slightly and turned around slowly. At the last minute he turned quickly, hoping to surprise who or whatever the thing was that was watching him. Toboe held his hand out in front of him preparing himself for a possible attack. Nothing happened.
“I’m really getting tired of this!” Toboe said annoyed. “Whoever’s out there had better come out!” No response. “Humph, maybe I scared them. No, I can’t scare anything.” Toboe turned around and waited for another noise to come up again. When nothing happened he sighed and walked back towards his clothes that were still drying on the rocks. He sat down on the warm grass and stretched out, resting his head on his arms. He kept alert even though he was resting, slightly tense.
A cloaked figure stood a few feet away hidden well by the tall bushes and shrubs that we part of the outside rim of the forest. They watched the copper wolf that lay by the stream intently, eyes traveling over the small form. The figure watched for a few more moments before turning away from the peaceful wolf who was nearly oblivious that someone was watching him. The cloak swirled as the stranger turned around and began to walk away, but not before stealing one more glance at the copper wolf laying by the stream.
--We’ll meet again soon enough, Toboe.—
………………
Toboe open his eyes and gasped. The sun was close to being directly above him in the clear blue sky. He had been away for longer than he meant to. He jumped up and stretched quickly and reached for him shirt and boots (which were now thankfully dry) and pulled them on hastily. ‘I hope that the others aren’t too worried about me or mad!’ He finally finished putting on his clothes and ran towards the woods again tripping a few times over fallen branches, rocks, and the like. He nearly got hit in the face with a tree branch that was a little too close to the ground as he continued to run. Only after not finding the path that led to the cave and a many cuts and bruises later did he stop and look around him trying to find the way back again.
“Wonderful,” Toboe groaned to no one in particular, “I’m lost.” He frowned and looked down at himself. The hem of his pants were covered with mud and grass stains and a few tears could be seen from his wild running through the thick brush. His arms were covered with little scratches and his back had a small gash down the middle towards the side. He sighed and reached up with a bruised hand towards his forehead, where yet another bruise was beginning to form.
“Well before I even think about going back to the others I need to find some way to hide these injuries. They’ll think that I was attacked by something!” That last comment made Toboe think back to the weird feeling that he had earlier that someone had been watching him. He shrugged the feeling away and focused on what he was going to do about his wounds. He thought hard until the idea dawned on him:
“I’ll heal them myself with my powers.” He smiled widely. “It won’t be that hard, and it won’t take as long.” He smiled even more and gazed down at the first small scrape on his arm. Even though it wasn’t too deep, it did hurt and the sight of blood running down his arm was a bit unnerving. He moved his other hand over the cut and waited for the warm sensation that would flow up his arm signifying that the wound was beginning to heal. He didn’t feel anything.
‘Why isn’t it working?’ Toboe thought worriedly. He tried again, but still, nothing happened. He sighed and looked hard at the wound that refused to heal itself. “Grrr…”
The reason why suddenly popped into Toboe’s head. ‘I’m probably not thinking hard enough. I need to concentrate more.’ He closed his eyes and thought hard about healing his wound. His hand felt warm and the he moved it over the cut without opening his eyes, fearing that he might break his concentration. He smiled as he felt the wound heal over and when the warm sensation fade slightly. He gazed at his work and moved his hand to the next wound carefully. Again he was healed and then he concentrated on fixing the rest. The final wound on his back was not only hard to reach but it also took quite a bit of energy and even more concentration to fix it. Toboe winced as it was healed; the wound was large and healing took away quite a bit of his energy, making him feel a bit light-headed and tired afterwards. He frowned as the flow of magic stopped and he couldn’t completely heal the wound.
“It’s alright; it’s nearly done anyway. The rest can heal naturally. Besides, I really need to get back to the others,” Toboe said to himself as he bounded towards the cave. He knew where he was now and ran quickly towards his friends.
………………
”What’s taking chibi so long?” Hige asked while chewing on a large portion of the small deer that he and Kiba had found a while ago. “ I thought that you said he just went out for a little while.” Tsume rolled his eyes and glanced at Hige. “He didn’t exactly specify how long ‘a little while’ was, Porky. Why don’t you just shut up and finish eating your damn food.”
Hige ignored Tsume’s insults and kept eating his food, practically shoving the poor deer down his throat. Tsume shook his head and looked out of the cave again. It was mid afternoon and Toboe still wasn’t back. He didn’t really want to admit but he was a bit worried about the pup. Toboe rarely went out on his own and when he did he came back in a short amount of time. ‘It probably has something to do with that dream he had earlier; he should have told me about it.’ Tsume shook his head again and frowned. ‘Why do I care, anyway? Toboe can take care of himself.’ Tsume paused in thought. ‘On second thought, maybe not.’
Tsume was ready to step out and look for the pup when he heard an odd noise reach his ears. It sounded like a laser gun being fired. Kiba and Hige looked up as well and stared in the same direction as Tsume. They suddenly saw a bright red beam of light hit a tree that was unfortunate enough to be in the pathway of the beam of light. It glowed brightly before shattering into millions of pieces. They were about to prepare to attack when they heard light yet frantic footsteps come closer. Soon Toboe appeared near the remains of where the tree had been and looked down; worry and fear etched onto his face.
“Oh no, this isn’t good.” Toboe said looking down. Unknown to him the others were watching with a combination of confusion, awe, interest, and maybe a bit of fear. Toboe was flipping out over the sight of the mangled tree on the ground. “Oooooohhhhh…”
“Toboe, what the hell was that?” Hige said, eyes wide. He forgot his food for a moment and ran over to the spot where a fearful Toboe was trembling. “Whoa, this tree is completely gone!” He looked down at Toboe with wide eyes. “How did it happen?” Toboe shook his head. “I don’t know,” he lied.
Kiba looked around and lifted his head to sniff the air. Hige did so as well and Tsume listened intently. Toboe cowered in front of them hoping that they didn’t find out that he was the one who has made the tree self-destruct. “I can’t smell or hear anything,” Kiba said. “Me neither,” Hige murmured. Tsume didn’t speak but he kept his amber gaze on Toboe. As he stared he noticed for the first time that the boy’s clothes were torn and dirty. His copper hair was still wet from his swim in the stream and it hung in his pale face partially shielding his face from view. “Toboe, are you sure that you don’t know what happened?”
Toboe yelped at being addressed to and looked up at Tsume with fear. The wolf’s eyes weren’t cruel, but he felt very guilty for lying to his friends. He fidgeted slightly and shook his head. “No, Tsume.”
Hige smiled at Toboe and clapped him on the back. Toboe let out a loud hiss, as his wound wasn’t completely healed over yet. Hige didn’t notice though. “Well whatever that was it can wait for now, I really want to get back to my food.” He proceeded to drag Toboe along with him and as the young wolf passed by the others, both Kiba and Tsume took notice of the long gash in the back of Toboe’s shirt and the remains of the blood that Toboe hadn’t remembered to wash off.
“Toboe, what happened?” Kiba said as he walked towards Toboe. He reached out and touched the edge of Toboe’s shirt and the boy pulled away quickly. “Oh, it was nothing. I caught my shirt on a branch while I was running back here. I’m fine, don’t worry.” Toboe continued to babble loudly while Tsume came back around Toboe and pulled the torn part of Toboe’s shirt away so he could get a better view of the wound. Tsume frowned in confusion; there was no wound. The only thing that was visible was a deep red line under the pale skin. He glanced back at Toboe’s shirt, which had bloodstains on it. ‘There should be blood but the wound here isn’t bleeding. Hell, the skin isn’t even broken.’ Tsume looked at Toboe’s back again before backing away from Toboe again.
“Take off your shirt.” Tsume said. Toboe turned around abruptly. “What?” He stared, eyes wide in disbelief. “You heard me,” was the reply. Toboe had no choice but to obey. He undid the buttons and pulled off the torn shirt. When it was off he shivered and turned around without being told. Tsume, Kiba, and Hige gasped at what they saw. Deep scars crossed Toboe’s back. Nearly all of them were deep and some of them looked somewhat recent. The red line complemented them all as it ran over four other old wounds. They stared in disbelief and horror at what they saw. Toboe realized that they had seen them and he turned around again, trying to pull his shirt back on again.
Tsume reached out to Toboe before he could finish this task and reached out with very unexpected concern to touch Toboe’s back. The pup stiffened. “How did you get these wounds, Toboe?” The gray wolf asked. Toboe shook his head in a silent response and pulled away. He missed those warm and strangely comforting fingers before pulling his shirt on again. None of them spoke as he did. “I’m sorry, but I can’t tell you right now.”
They all stared at Toboe as he walked past them into the cave and looked around for some of the leftover food. Though he had no appetite after the incident between them, he needed to eat something to distract himself. The other three stared at Toboe before entering the cave as well. They would have to handle the situation at hand later.
Tsume was the last one to enter the cave again. He just stood there and watched Toboe intently. The copper wolf paused and slowly looked up to meet Tsume’s gaze. Hazel met amber for a fleeting second before Toboe looked back down at his food. Tsume kept staring and then tore his gaze away from the boy.
‘He’s not telling us something. Whether or not it has something to do with that tree incident, I don’t know, but we’ll have to pry it out of him somehow.’ Tsume’s mind shifted back to the image of those scars that had marred Toboe’s otherwise perfect skin. He pushed the latter part of that thought out of his mind. He kept on staring at Toboe who refused to meet his gaze again.
‘They know, they know,’ Toboe thought frantically. ‘I can’t let them get involved. I can’t. They’ll be hurt. I can’t let them, especially not Tsume. They can’t know, I won’t let them,’ he repeated over and over in his head. The guilt continued to build as he felt the unwavering gaze of his friends rest on him. ‘They can’t know.’
………………
Outside of the cave the cloaked figure stood, once again hidden in the shadows. He had witnessed the entire scene and knew what would happen.
--They will find out, Toboe. They will. You cannot hide the truth from them for much longer.—The wind blew and a leaf blew in front of the figure and from a distance it would have shielded them from view. In that instant and a flash of blue light, he disappeared.
--You cannot hide the truth for much longer. They will know.—
