10 year old Integra Hellsing was perched on the stone rail of her balcony. Her thin legs were swinging back and forth as her long strands of platinum blonde hair were blown by the wind. Through round glasses, innocent sparkling blue eyes closed as autumn air caressed her dark skin. The cold air told her the time of winter was coming. The one time vampires sleep through for months, and the one time hunters were allowed to have a break. Of course, her father didn’t. Only on Christmas Day did he take a break.
“Miss Integra…” A familiar voice with concern called.
The young blonde turned her head to the mansion’s butler. He was always her second father, unlike her uncle. Though Uncle Richard was nice, it was in his eyes that he did not like her. Walter actually cared for her injuries and was there when nightmares attacked her dreams, things her father was supposed to do.
“Hello Walter,” she smiled. “How is father?”
Walter sighed. “Busy as usual, and I know he doesn’t like you sitting on the rail like that.”
Integra giggled, that wasn’t the truth. “No Walter, you don’t like me sitting here. Father doesn’t even know I sit like this,” Walter picked her up off the stone and placed her on her feet.
She smiled at him and hugged his legs. Integra skipped off to her father’s study like little red riding hood with Walter close behind. Once she came to a halt, all she could do was stare at the door. Her father did not like visitors coming unexpectedly in his study, which included her. Integra inhaled deeply and let it out. She was willing to take the risk.
She gently pushed the door open a crack and peeked through. Her father was in a leather green armchair. His hands held his face, his hair was mussed. Integra vaguely remembered when he was like this, he would not snap at a woman, but talk to them barely above a whisper.
Integra walked in with Walter who closed the door behind them. The small ten year old sat on his lap as he sighed and brought his hands slowly down from his face. Arthur had bags under his eyes. There were dried flecks of blood on his face and his neck was red.
“Father?” Integra whispered.
“Yes my dear,” he whispered back.
“Go to bed,” She placed a hand on his forehead; it was hot, very hot. “You’re ill!”
“I cannot Integra, I have so much to do,” he yawned and tried to get a crick in his neck out.
“So?” Integra clamped her mouth shut after that. He father blinked at her…then burst out laughing.
The young blonde turned her head to Walter who was chuckling. She pouted and crossed her arms. Arthur’s laugh died down a bit.
“Oh Integra…” He chuckled. “So much like your mother, so much like Anna…”
Integra bit her tongue, how she hated those words… She barely knew the woman and everyone expected her to be proud of the fact she looks like her mother, talks like her mother, and has the same spirit. HAH! She hated being compared to the “Beautiful,” and “Great,” woman. She absolutely hated it.
‘Such sorrow, such pain…’ a voice purred into her mind, then chuckled. ‘Such hatred!’
Integra ignored the voice, though it did sound familiar. Integra cracked a small smile to her father. She leaned forward and hugged him.
‘Alright, I will leave work, but only for two days,” he murmured.
Integra then really smiled.
***********
Time passed too quickly for Integra. To her, it seemed she barely had any time to play games with Arthur. It was the second day, night, time for good little girls to go to sleep, but Integra couldn’t sleep. Why? She did not know.
Her father came minutes ago to bid her goodnight. She had forgotten the last time he did that. Integra curled into a semi-ball, her eyes staring at the blurry images. As she finally fell asleep, she wished she would wake up.
***********
Integra stood in the middle of a battlefield. The battles had turned the luscious green field into a sea of dead bodies and red. And she, a child of ten, stood a top of them all. Integra took a step back and slipped. She only made but a gasp as she slid.
Once at the ground, her clothes were soaked with blood. Integra brought a hand to her face, her glasses were not there, and her sight was perfect.
“Such a messy one,” a voice laughed.
Integra looked around for the owner and spotted him behind her. Her eyes widened. She knew this ma- nay, vampire.
He was clad in red, his hair short wavy and black. And his red eyes held blood lust. His pale face had blood dripping from his chin.
“You are the one that is messy,” she snarled, wiping the back of her hand on her face to rid of the sickening blood.
Freezing fingers grasped her chin and tilted it upward. Her eyes grew to dishes as his freakishly long tongue licked the blood off of her face. Integra struggled out of his grasp but his grip was tight.
Once her face was clean, he let go and she stumbled back into the bodies that were over killed. Alucard chuckled at her mixed expression of disgust and fear.
“Did you do this?” she asked, standing and staring at the bloody mountain.
“That I did Integra,” he whispered.
“Why?”
“This, is what I do, I kill,” he growled.
“Then why didn’t you kill me?” she wondered aloud.
“Well,” he sounded innocent when he said that. He knelt down and grabbed her shoulders and pulled her back, closer to him. “First, it was because you looked like Anna. But your soul was aching, screaming to be released. Heh, such a dark soul for a child,” he purred in her ear. “Why do you cry child?”
“I have never cried!” She snarled.
Alucard barked a laugh. “Never?! HA! Your body may not cry but your soul does. Every passing day since I have been locked up, I hear you cry. That damned basement echoes with your cries,” he petted her platinum hair lovingly. “Let me turn you, let me free you!!”
Integra growled and slapped his hand from her head. “Never! I refuse to be turned into what killed my mother!!”
Alucard snickered. His cheek brushed against hers to whisper in her ear.
“I thought you hated Anna…”
Roughly, Integra was pushed awake. The blonde sat up in a cold sweat. She breathed as if she just ran three miles without stopping, even for a glass of water. She moaned and placed her face in her hands.
“He’s crazy.” She wondered aloud.
His laugh in her head was the first reply. ‘You have no idea how many have said that.’
“Shut up, you prat!!” She snapped looking for him.
‘I’m not in here!’ The first she heard his singsong voice, and she hated it.
‘Ooh, touchy, you’re starting to hate everything lately,’ he chortled.
“How dare you!” Integra growled, putting on her glasses.
‘Yes, how dare I!’ Integra ignored that, climbed out of bed, pushed open her door that led to the halls.
‘You said you were in the basement, right?’ She asked mentally not wanting to risk being caught awake at this hour by Walter.
‘Yes milady’ he thought sarcastically.
After a few twisted turns, snapping insults mentally, and dodging others awake, Integra reached a door, with dried blooded symbols painted on it. ‘Are you in there?’
‘Yes, my old friend locked me up, and I had only been free for one night!’ He sounded like a child with an unfair.
Integra grasped the handle and pulled the heavy door. She stared in, shocked. The bright wires in the dark illuminated Alucard’s form. His feet were two feet off the ground, legs were bound together and his arms were eagle spread. He smiled at her with his cheshire grin, freaking her out again.
“Who did this?” She asked closing the door behind her and slowly walking down the steps.
“That isn’t for me to say,” he purred. Integra shivered.
“Must you say it like that?” She asked crossing arms and standing in front of his hanging form.
“Why do you ask? Is it because it scares you? Or does it excite you?”
“You pervert!!” She screeched. You’d think a child of ten wouldn’t know what that meant, but she did after reading an adult book and asking Walter what some of the phrases meant. Alucard laughed.
“So easy to make you snap,” he whispered.
Integra pouted. “So adorable,” he snickered.
She turned to heels and began to walk out. “I’m leaving, there is nothing for me here…”
“Wait…” Alucard murmured. Integra looked over her shoulder to the vampire. “Answer me this, will you stay a merciful person like your mother? Or will you kill to save you pitiful world like your father?”
She did not know, she really did not know. “I can’t say…” with that, she left.
“Either way, I’ll have fun,” he smiled and decided to sleep.
