Even though she was turned to the side, there by hiding the really important parts, one could tell that Kaki was definitely a woman. Her hair hung in damp curls around her face falling to mid back. She quickly pulled on the shirt and pants. Promptly tying them up, she turned towards the shocked man.
“Well… yeah.” She blushed looking down.
“You… lied.” Tasuki was still trying to figure it all out. The only person to pull of a stunt like that so perfectly was Nuriko. Gods rest his soul. He set the tray down on the table in the middle of the room.
“No, I didn’t lie. You didn’t ask if I was a boy. You just assumed that I was. Everything else I told you was true. About my mother and I was the one who saved you.”
“This is why I hate women. They do nothing but lie and manipulate.”
“you’re a thief and you say women lie and manipulate?” Kaki was mad now. She wasn’t the most patient person to begin with.
“Why dress in men’s clothes anyway, huh? Why not dress normally instead of deceiving everyone.” Tasuki asked.
“What do you think they do to women who wonder the country side with out a man to escort her? Especially a young women?” Kaki stood in front of him not more then five inches away. He backed way and ended up against the wall. “You know what they’d do. They would leave her dead and disgraced in the desert. No thanks, I’d much rather dress like a man then be used by one.” That close Tasuki could see another emotion under the anger in her eyes. Sadness, maybe? No, not just sadness; pain.
“I’m sorry for what ever happened to you.” He said quietly. Kaki turned from him putting her hands on the table.
“I brought food.” He said daftly, “I thought you and I could eat together.”
“I thought you hate women.” She replied after a moment.
“I do but I’ll eat with you anyway.”
Kaki turned to him, a small smirk on her face, “Oh I’m so honored.”
Tasuki smirked back. She acted like a guy too. Maybe she wasn’t all bad. Her willingness to help a stranger in need, her fierceness, the ease at which she smiled, all of it reminded him of a certain priestess who save their world twice. Kaki sat up straight and ate almost delicately.
“So,” Kaki said between bites, “How did you end up leading this gang?”
“The old leader died and since I was practically his son, I took over.” Tasuki finished his bite and took a swing of sake.
“How long ago was that?” Kaki took a small sip of the sake. She had never been much of a drinker. But it was offered and her mother had always told her to graciously accept what’s given to her. And getting plastered with fifty plus men running around wasn’t a good idea.
“Five years.” Ha returned before pushing more food into in mouth. Kaki shrugged and went back to eating bowing her head a little. Some of her dark red and black hair fell into her face. Kaki just pushed it behind her ear and kept eating. ‘How do you get hair that color?’ Tasuki took another bite.
“Are you still thinking about having me join your gang? Or am I disqualified?” Kaki asked. Looking up after she finished she poured another cup of sake and took a sip, never taking her eyes off him.
“I haven’t decided.” Tasuki leaned forward with his ever present smirk, “You might be able to change my mind.”
“No.” She stood and stretched. “It’s getting kinda late. I should go to bed.” Kaki Bowed to the Mt. Reikaku gang leader, “Thank you.”
“Hey, don’t mention it.” He replied standing so he could go.
“Boss,” Koji called from the hall. When he got into the room he gaped at Kaki, “I knew there was something weird about you.”
“You were right, Congratulations.” Kaki replied completely monotone.
“There’s this guy that says he’s your friend. Calls himself Chichiri.” Koji pointed behind him with his thumb.
“I traveled a long way to see you, you know.” The blue haired man poked his head in the door. “Oh? Who’s this?” he smiled at Kaki.
“Genrou said this girl saved his life.” Koji grabbed one of the drinking bowls and the sake.
“I did save his life.” She protested.
“I didn’t know she was a girl!” Tasuki shouted. Kaki rolled her eyes; men. Chichiri looked very confused. “I fell into the river and she jumped in and dragged me out.” Tasuki explained.
“We’ve got a big problem, you know.” Chichiri said after a moment of thought.
“What’s wrong?” The Suzaku warrior asked.
“Would you mind if we spoke in your bed chamber?” Chichiri asked. Tasuki nodded his consent. The two men bid Kaki a good night and left. The entire cave was a buzz with the fact that Tasuki had brought a girl back with him. He lightly singed a few of them to get the fact that he didn’t want to talk about it across.
“There are demons destroying the country, you know. We need the help of Suzaku to get rid of them, you know.” Chichiri said
“What makes you think he’s gonna help us? We’ve already asked a lot of him.”
“Taiitsukun said that there’s a girl we need to help call him. I think its Kaki, you know.”
“How do you figure?” Tasuki sat heavily in his chair. This was making his head hurt.
“Taiitsukun told me to come find you so we could call in Suzaku and we could get rid of the demons. But we need the key, so she gave me a stone that will alert me to the key’s presence, you know.”
“And you think Kaki is the key?”
Chichiri nodded. “The stone had the character for “key” on it and when I got into her room it got very hot, like it was on fire. If you don’t believe me then we could go back to her room, you know.” After a moment to think it over, Tasuki agreed. He and Chichiri made there way down the hall and silently into Kaki’s room. Chichiri pulled out the stone which was now glowing red with the character “Key” in gold shining brilliantly in the center. The two men smiled at each other, Chichiri with his cheerful Bright grin Tasuki with his usual smirk.
Once out side the room, Chichiri spoke. “I told you, you know.”
“We should set out in the morning at go to Mt. Taikyoku.” Tasuki gave Chichiri a room for the night. And headed to bed.
