Nikkou was quiet for a while as he processed what his mother had told him. The guy with orange haired was his father. Kyo or something.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you when you first met him. I wasn’t sure if it would be right to tell you then or not.” Tohru chewed on her lower lip. She knew they would have to have this talk, but she had been dreading it.
“So… that Kyo guy… gods, what a liar!” The boy pounded his fist against the table.
“What did he say?” Tohru asked.
“I asked if you two had gone out and he said no.”
“We didn’t date. We were living together…” at her son’s expression, Tohru babbled. “… Okay so I was living in a tent on Sohma property and Yuki asked invited me to live with him and Shigure, I haven’t told you much about him, and then Kyo started living with us. And we ended up together.”
“You… were living with three men?” Nikkou gawked at his mother. She really had lived an interesting life.
“Are you okay?” She asked quietly.
“Yeah… I would like to see that Kyo guy again… just to make sure he’s a good guy.”
“Kyo…” Tohru smiled “Kyo was a very complex person. He seemed so rough ended but when I got to know him a little more I realized that he was a very sweet boy… man”
“All the same… I want to meet him again.” Nikkou stood up and turned to leave the room, “I have homework. Holler if you need me.”
Tohru smiled a little. He was just like his father. This went better then expected. She sighed happily and set to work looking over today’s schedule. It still amazed her how quickly she her cleaning business took off. She started with three houses a week and before long she needed to hire more people to help her with the more then eight houses a week. Now Honda Cleaning services over thirty houses and has a full staff. Tohru had put down the mop and bucket so she could better organize the other cleaners. She had made a good life for herself and her boy here. All she had ever wanted was his happiness. And she was so happy he had taken the news well. The phone snapped her out of her thoughts.
“Honda Cleaning Services.” Tohru said in her polite professional tone.
“Tohru?” Kyo’s voice said on the other end of the line.
“Kyo? It’s good to here from you.” Tohru swallowed.
“Are you working or can you talk?” Kyo asked. His heart was beating in his throat.
“No, I can talk now. It’s good to here from you.” Tohru rested her elbows on the desk.
“Does he know?” Kyo got right to the point.
“Yeah he knows. I told today. But I have a feeling that he knew already. He’s very cleaver, you know.”
Kyo chuckled at that. “He kept grilling me about our… relationship in high school.”
“I’m sorry for that.” Tohru sighed. “Nikkou said he would like to meet you again. I think he was a little overwhelmed at the reunion. He is only nine after all.”
“He wants to meet me again?” Kyo asked in amazement.
“Kyo… I… I know you don’t have a relationship with your father and I also know that keeping him from you was a bad idea… but please, if you want I would really like for you to have a relationship with Nikkou. He needs a father… he needs someone he can talk to man to man.” Tohru spoke softly.
“Do you still live in Osaka?” Kyo asked. The conversation change was too quick for Tohru, who stammered before answering yes.
“I’ll check with Master, but I think I might be able to come for a visit.” The cat said at last.
“That would be good. Nikkou would like that.” Tohru smiled.
“I’ll call back either tomorrow or the day after. Is that okay?” Kyo could feel his heart beating like a caged bird. He didn’t want to scare her away.
“That would be good. Okay.” Tohru sighed happily. Kyo released the breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. They said their good byes and hung up. Kyo stared at the receiver for a moment before sliding it back of the cradle. Someone to talk to man to man. The cat rushed out of the house, stopping briefly to slip on his shoes and rushed to his master’s villa.
“Master? Are you here?” Kyo asked knocking on the door frame, the door left wide open.
“Yes, Kyo, I’m here.” Kazuma poked his head into the hall. Worry creased his brow, “Is everything okay?”
“Well… not really.” Kyo pulled his shoes off and stepped inside. He fixed tea and explained what happened at the reunion, seeing Tohru again and finding out about his son. Kazuma listened patiently as his ‘son’ spoke, watching him pace the room only to sit down again and drum his fingers on the floor. When Kyo was quiet for a long space of beats, Kazuma asked “Would you like my opinion?” The cat nodded.
“I think you should go. It would be good for you and Nikkou needs to know he can call on his father when he needs help, even if you and Tohru don’t get back together.”
“Why didn’t she tell me right when it happened? I would have helped her. She… she had to raise him on her own. I thought she trusted me.” Kyo looked up urgently. Something on his eyes made Kazuma’s heart wrench. He looked almost lost, child-like.
“That’s something only she can answer. But you need to go and find out. She helped you when you needed her most now I believe she may need you to step up to the challenge of helping her.” Kazuma sipped his tea. He had been really worried when Tohru left. He constantly watched the cat for any signs of reverting back to the way he used to be. No hope, no happiness, a life full of despair. Kyo focused on his training in the first few years after she left and, when Akito died, Kazuma asked the cat if he would like to teach at the Dojo. Of course Kyo agreed. The look on the cat’s face when working with a new student made Kazuma so happy. But there was always a longing to the young man. Something that the students or even the old master couldn’t reach… couldn’t fill.
“Kyo, don’t worry about your students. I’ll take over for you while you’re away.” Kazuma spoke up after a moment of thought.
“Master?” the cat looked confused.
Kazuma smiled, “Don’t worry, just work with them today and I’ll take over tomorrow.” He stood and helped Kyo to his feet. Before the cat could say anything, Kazuma pulled him in for a quick hug. “You’ll be fine and if you need any help just call me.” The pair walked out to the Dojo.
