CHAPTER TWO:
Love Council"Darn this
thing!" Yuuri exclaimed in frustration as the clasp of the blue shawl draped
over his shoulders snapped open once more, nearly pricking his finger."Heika, calm
down!" Günter started fussing over him like a panicky hen, taking
the uncooperative pin. "Here, let me do it for you."Wolfram let
out a snort. "I thought you hated going out in full regalia? Why do so
now, and with a human king from across the seas?""Because he
pisses me off, that's why!" was Yuuri's heated reply. "He doesn't believe
that I'm a Maou! I have to get him to respect me!""I seriously
doubt if a change of wardrobe will make any difference," the blond Mazoku
remarked dubiously. "Once a wimp, always a wimp.""Stop calling
me a wimp!" He wagged a scolding finger at the annoying boy. "And you should
learn to respect me too! I am your King after all!" A lopsided grimace
went up the corner of Yuuri's mouth. "Why does this conversation seem so
familiar to me?""I'm your fiancé,"
Wolfram pointedly reminded him. "It's my duty to point out your defects
so you could correct them. But then again, how long has it been since you
became the Maou? Two years? Is there really no remedy for your wimpiness?"Yuuri nearly
choked as strong arms wrapped around his neck with the tenacity of an octopus'
tentacles. "How can you say that, Wolfram?" Günter glared at the blond
boy resentfully. "True, Heika is far from perfect, but he has proven himself
to be an excellent Maou!""Hey, Günter!"
Yuuri's eyes narrowed as he glowered at his lavender-haired adviser. "What
exactly do you mean by that?"Konrad chose
that moment to enter the chamber with Cheri and Gwendal behind him. Smiling
cheerfully, he said, "I think what Günter is trying to say is that
your…uh, ahem…faults are the very same things that have charmed your loyal
subjects. Perhaps you should consider a name change.""To what? King
Wimpy? No way!" Yuuri quickly blurted out. "You've ruined my life enough
with the name you gave me, Nakuzeoya!" His face brightened seeing Gwendal.
Running towards the elder Mazoku, he inquired, "Gwendal, are you all right?
I was so worried about you! I…" The boy hesitated for a second. "I wish
I could apologize for what I did. I just couldn't stand seeing him doing
those things to you!"Gwendal was
taken aback by his king's outburst. He had hoped to convince Yuuri that
this situation with Casanova was his problem that only he alone could solve.
He had underestimated how deeply Yuuri cared for his well-being."I am touched
by your concern for me, Heika," Gwendal said, slowly going down on one
knee, obviously still in pain. "I am truly sorry that you had to get involved
in my personal affairs.""I'm glad to
see that you have the decency to apologize for what you've done, Gwendal!"
Günter declared heatedly. "Why you had to involve Yuuri-heika in this
is utterly deplorable!"Yuuri was shocked
by that unexpected outburst. "That is too harsh, Günter! I can't believe
that you would say such a thing!" He helped Gwendal to his feet. "I don't
know what's going on here, but I'll straighten everything out," the young
Maou said reassuringly. Turning to a worried Cheri, he said, "Don't worry.
I have no intention of handing Gwendal to that pro-wrestler." Gung-ho,
Yuuri declared, "Time to convene the Love Council!""Love Council?"
Wolfram rolled his green eyes heavenwards. "Only a wimp like you would
think of a stupid name like that.""And I told
you! Stop calling me a wimp!"At these words,
all went to the Great Hall, grim-faced, for their audience with the King
of Capistrano. Casanova was already there, dressed in the long flowing
robes of the Bedouins of the desert, his saber hanging in its scabbard
at his left hip. His bodyguards were similarly attired. At Yuuri's entrance,
this time, he acknowledged Shin Makoku's king with a polite bow, with right
hand pressed over his breast. Yuuri gave the ruler a bow as well as he
sat down on the throne. The others took their places on the dais, but Yuuri
took Gwendal's hand and made him stand at his side.As tactfully
as he could, Yuuri began, "I regret my intrusion last night, Casanova-heika.
Unfortunately, I have no control over where Shinou-heika chooses to send
me. He usually brings me to the location where my aid is sorely needed.""I am happy
to see that the Original King continues to watch over the welfare of his
loyal subjects, and that his successor has taken up the task as well,"
Casanova answered respectfully. "However, I speak the truth when I said
that Sir von Walde is my betrothed.""That has certainly
piqued my curiosity. As you probably know by now, I come from a different
land, so it took some time for me to become acquainted with the customs
here. But please do tell me. How did you and Gwendal become engaged anyway?
Is it the slap thing again?"Casanova laughed
at that last query. "Yes, that is indeed a very strange custom. But since
you asked, yes, I did slap Gwendal on his left cheek. However, he and I
are bound together by something deeper, more permanent than a mere slap
on the face.""What do you
mean?" Yuuri frowned at that cryptic answer. It was Cheri
who blurted out, "He bound my son to him with accursed blood magic, the
likes of which I have never seen before. If I had known, I would never
have permitted it to be done to him.""It's not as
if you had any choice in the matter, Cheri-sama," Casanova snickered. "Your
land was still in the throes of a bitter civil war, and my armada happened
to be knocking at your shores. It's either you forge an alliance with my
country or suffer our wrath. Besides, it's not as if Gwendal did not come
to me willingly. As much as he wanted to protect Shin Makoku, he was more
protective of his younger siblings. At that time, Sir Weller was wounded
following the battle at Rutenberg. Wolfram, on the other hand, was too
young for my tastes, even if he is quite pretty. Gwendal was the obvious
choice, and he knew it.""So it's a
union for an alliance, on pain of an invasion," Yuuri said thoughtfully.
"The one thing I don't like about this situation is that it is not a union
of love. I've always believed that only two people who love each other
should be bound together. What you've done is to coerce Gwendal into an
engagement he does not like, even if he had agreed to do so for the sake
of this country. Being the Maou, I could have this engagement dissolved.
I have no need to make a pact with a country at the expense of my subject's
heart and freedom. It goes against everything that I believe in.""Unfortunately,
there's nothing you can do about it, Heika," the King told his younger
counterpart. "The pact has been made before your time. You have no choice
but to honor it. Of course, there's the matter of the bond between us.
Not even you, with your immense power, can break it. It would do well for
you to simply accept it. In any case, this matter will not trouble you
any longer. The reason why I returned to Shin Makoku is to bring my betrothed
back with me to Capistrano. It is time for Gwendal to assume his position
as my Royal Consort."Gwendal was
too eager to end this distressing audience. "I shall make haste to prepare
for our departure, Casanova-heika."Before he could
descend the dais, however, Yuuri blocked his path by swinging Morgif, sheathed
in his scabbard, before him. The Demon Sword even made a warning, "Whoops!",
his face shaking and lips pursed in disagreement."Hold it! I
did not give you my permission to leave yet," Yuuri said calmly, laying
his elbow on the armrest and cupping his chin with his open palm. "Besides,
there are ceremonies that have yet to be performed."Gwendal blinked
at Yuuri in confusion. The King of Capistrano was infuriated to have his
plans thwarted."Ceremonies,
Heika?" asked Casanova suspiciously. "What kind of ceremonies?""Every union
in Shin Makoku needs to have the blessing of Shinou-heika," the Maou explained.
"Especially if one in the pair has devoted himself to the service of the
land, as Gwendal is. Just as you have bound yourself to him, Gwendal is
bound to this very country. Only Shinou-heika can break his ties to Shin
Makoku.""I don't know
anything about tha--," Günter nearly blurted out if he hadn't been
silenced by the heavy boot heels of Konrad and Wolfram on his toes.Unperturbed
by that outburst, Yuuri remarked, "It's in Volume 5 in 'Holy Ceremonies
of Shin Makoku'. Since you constantly remind me to study on the traditions
of my kingdom, I advise you also to do the same if you are not aware of
this fact. The text stated that an earth maryoku user is bound to the land
that he or she is supposed to protect. In a way, he becomes wedded to the
country. For him to break these ties and be joined to another, he must
first be cloistered in Shinou's Temple for a month in order for him to
receive the blessing from the Original King himself.""Why? Has my
betrothed taken a vow of chastity like a temple maiden?" The sinister King
twiddled the tip of his curling mustache between his fingertips. "Perhaps
I should point this fact out to you. If you believe Gwendal to be a virgin,
then you are sadly mistaken. I was surprised last night to discover that
someone else had claimed my beloved before me. Not a single drop of virgin
blood was shed on our bed. Why should he still be obligated to perform
such a ceremony when he had taken it upon himself to bestow his virtue
to the first man who had dared to spread his legs?"That comment
incensed the Maou greatly. "I will not have you speak about Gwendal in
that manner! He is not the kind of man who would surrender his virtue to
just anyone. Let me remind you, Casanova-heika, that you are in my
kingdom. Any insults you throw at my subjects are a personal affront to
me.""It was not
intended as an insult but a mere statement of a fact. I had hoped that
Gwendal would honor his bond with me. However, I was sorely disappointed
by what I had discovered. Still, if the man who had taken his chastity
would not honor the deed that he had committed, I will do the just thing
and take Gwendal for my Consort, ruined though he may be. There are…ways…for
me to purge the taint.""You may do
so afterwards when Shinou-heika has approved of your engagement. Nothing
will change that fact," Yuuri said strongly. "For now, you shall be my
guest. Please accept the hospitality that Shin Makoku accords you. Our
customs may seem unjust to you, but Shinou-heika himself had implemented
these laws in order to protect the citizenry. I do hope you will be patient
enough to allow us to complete these ceremonies. Believe me, it will be
to your kingdom's best interest as well." The boy king smiled shrewdly.
"You wouldn't want the Original King's wrath upon your head if you take
his loyal subject by force."Casanova was
infuriated, but he chose instead to accede to Yuuri's wishes. "If that
is what must be done, then I will abide by your decision. I sincerely hope
that Shinou-heika will give us his blessing soon so that we could return
immediately to Capistrano.""It is up to
the Original King to decide when he will give his blessing. Be patient.
That is all I ask."At that final
word, the ruler of Capistrano bowed to Yuuri and strode out of the Great
Hall with his retinue, just as Murata entered."Oh, did I
just miss it?" the Great Sage of Shin Makoku complained. "I should really
tell Ulrike to order all those temple maidens to stop giving me those errands.
They should just hire a handyman to maintain the place.""Consider yourself
lucky that you weren't here." Yuuri slumped back into his seat with a relieved
sigh. "Man, that took a hell of a lot out of me! If I have to deal with
people like him all the time, I should never have agreed to become Maou
in the first place.""I think you
handled it quite nicely and very bravely," Konrad praised his kind-hearted
ward. "Just like a true king.""Looks like
there's still hope for a wimp like you," Wolfram offered a reluctant compliment."Don't call
me a wimp!""You shouldn't
have done that, Heika," Gwendal said, his handsome face reflecting his
worry in the form of more wrinkles. "I am prepared to become his Consort.
Actually, I've been awaiting his return for the past two hundred years.""If you had
truly waited for your fiancé," Günter snapped back, "you should
have stayed faithful to him. You should never have…" He abruptly stopped
his tirade, lapsing into angry silence. The stricken
expression on Gwendal's face did not escape Murata's notice."Gwendal, is
it true what that pro-wrestler said?" Yuuri inquired gently. "That you…
You don't have to answer if you don't want to."Guiltily, Gwendal's
soft answer was "Yes.""You don't
love Casanova, do you?""Absolutely
not! I could never love a terrible man like him!""But you're
in love with someone else."That statement
shocked Gwendal. Rather than reply, he chose to be silent.Noting her
son's discomfiture, Cheri interjected, "Heika, I think it would be best
if we spoke about this in private. This issue with the King of Capistrano
is a very dangerous and delicate one, and I fear that my son's actions
may have endangered not only this country, but his life as well. I wish
I could blame him for what he had done. But if I had been in his place,
I would've done everything I could to get out of a marriage that I do not
want." Tears filled the former Maou's eyes. "It's my fault that Gwendal
is in this predicament. There's no forgiveness for what I did to my own
son."Konrad stepped
forward and laid gentle hands on his mother's shoulders. "I think it would
be best if we continue this discussion in your private suite, Mother. Perhaps
if Yuuri knows everything, we could all come up with a way to solve this
problem.""Hmmph!" Günter
snorted huffily. "Yes, all of you do that. I have many duties to attend
to."Yuuri frowned
at his adviser's behavior. "What's eating you, Günter? I was hoping
that you'd join us. I would really appreciate your opinions.""Heika, this
is a family matter of which I have no interest in. I will not lie to you
that I am extremely disappointed by Sir von Walde's behavior. If anything
else, it is my honest opinion that he is getting exactly what he deserved
and should be shipped off to Capistrano without any further delay."That uncharacteristic
response from his usually congenial friend was a huge shock for Yuuri.
"Günter! That's a terrible thing to say! I want you to apologize to
Gwendal this instant!"Günter,
however, threw a heated glare at his distraught friend. "If there is anyone
here who should be making apologies, it's him!""Günter,
wait…" Gwendal raised a pleading hand.Without saying
another word to his stunned friends, Günter strode out of the hall,
the angry heels of his boots tapping noisily on the marble floor.
