Team Rocket Secret Research Facility Alpha
Undisclosed location in Hoenn
"The results are conclusive," the scientist said, glancing to his partner as they stepped into the conference room. "The program is going beyond our expectations."
"Doesn't really matter, Davis," the second replied. "Haven't you heard? The Boss is sending in some new top level agent to oversee everything. We're to report everything to him, and he reports to the Boss. You know what that means, don't you? He gets the credit for everything. Same thing happened on that project a couple years ago when they were supposed to be creating the ultimate pokémon, some clone from an ancient pokémon."
"I remember that. But that program failed, didn't it?" Davis answered. "Something went wrong, and the whole place was destroyed. Besides, we have nothing to worry about, Parker. I hear it's a kid that they're sending. Surely, we'll be able to retain credit for our work."
"Perhaps. But that's not what really irks me. I hate having to report to some damn kid."
"Gentleman," came a voice from across the room. "I could really care less about who gets credit for the project's success." A chair swiveled, a young male sitting in it, dressed in the black suit of the Team Rocket Elite. His gaze was slightly downward, not looking at them directly, hands together, palms slightly apart, fingers steepled. Dark brown hair fell almost to his eyes, but arranged in such a way as to not appear either long or short. "My name is Chris, and I'm 15. I'm not 'some damn kid,' as you so eloquently put it. I'm only here to see the final completion of Project Full Control. If you have any problems with that, then that creates a problem with the Project, and I will remedy that by having you immediately replaced." He glanced up at them, deep blue eyes taking them both within their piercing gaze. "Now, do we have a problem, gentlemen? Davis?"
"No, sir. No problems."
"Parker?"
"No problems."
"Good. Now, the data I was given is a bit behind. If you would kindly bring me up to speed on the progress made with my pokémon."
His pokémon? "But, I thought…"
"I didn't ask you to think, Davis. Yes, they aren't my pokémon originally. It doesn't matter how Team Rocket came into possession of them. But as I am in charge, everything involved with Project Full Control is now mine. Therefore, they are my pokémon. Will we be able to create a pokémon that can control other pokémon?"
"Yes, sir." Davis replied. "Our initial study in creating the hybrid met in little success. It wasn't feasible with most pokémon, as you know. However, we decided that either Ditto or Eevee would be suitable."
"Why Eevee? I can see Ditto, but how would Eevee fit into the parameters? The files didn't explain that selection."
"Eevee is the only known pokémon that allows for mutation with its different evolutionary forms," Parker answered. "Thus, we thought that it might allow for… the project. With the latest experiments and calculations, we can now say that the project will be successful."
"Which pokémon?"
"Espeon and Umbreon."
"I wish to see them now. Please have all research data back here tomorrow. I want to go over every phase of the project. And I do mean all data. Every slip of paper, every data rom, every copy of the data roms. Everything." He stood and headed towards the door. "Parker, if you would be so kind as to take me to the pair. Davis, please inform everyone else involved that I need their notes."
"Right away, sir."
"Oh, and Davis?"
"Sir?"
"The Ditto. Get rid of it. Team Rocket has no room for failures." He turned, heading out the door, Parker right behind him. "On second thought, bring it to me. I wish to dispose of it… personally."
Davis nodded, a shiver going through him at the way Chris had emphasized 'personally.' He was definitely harsh and shrewd. No doubt that was why he was one of the best Elite at such a young age.
Chris watched the two pokémon from behind the glass, quietly observing them. The future of Team Rocket's dominance of pokémon rested with them. Of course, someone had once said the same thing with the research on creating the clone of Mew. And that had been a complete disaster.
He thought momentarily, knowing that there was something about that he should remember, but it eluded him at the moment. Perhaps later, he would recall it. "They aren't real happy, are they?" he asked, eyes still focused on the two docile creatures. "Are they treated well?"
"Sir? They are well cared for, and…"
"Does anyone actually go in with them? Do they have contact with anyone besides themselves?"
"No, sir. They are a bit aggressive to the staff…"
"Idiot. Do you know anything about pokémon?" Chris turned, opening the door to the enclosure, stepping inside. "That's because you treat them as subjects to be probed and studied. These two are valuable assets to Team Rocket, and are to be treated accordingly. Understood?"
"Yes sir."
"Good. No one else on the project is to have any unsupervised contact with them. I am to be present at all activities involving these two. No unauthorized contact at all. Now, leave me alone with them."
Parker nodded, quickly exiting the enclosure, watching as Chris knelt, calling to the two. He was quite thankful that his involvement with Full Control didn't require him to be with the pokémon much. That meant that he wouldn't have to deal with Chris as much. Let him take a personal interest in them. Even for an Elite, he was a bit too cold and calculating. Never had he felt more intimidated by the mere presence of someone as he had felt in those last few minutes with Chris.
"Sir?" one of the other project researchers asked. "What is he doing?"
"Taking full command of our 'valuable assets'," Parker said, watching as Chris coaxed the pair over, giving them pokéblocks. "No one else is supposed to have any contact with them without his direct supervision." He almost laughed to himself. 'His' pokémon had indeed become 'his' pokémon.
"So, success is rewarded, and failure punished," Davis said, entering and setting a pokéball on the table. He actually felt sorry for the Ditto, given that it wasn't its fault that it was unable to be implemented into Full Control. "And if they fail to be successful? What happens to them?"
"If the project fails, I bet that all of us will find the same fate. He's a bit too deep into the Team Rocket philosophy, if you ask me. Probably been involved since his birth."
"Don’t doubt that," Davis said. "If this is the same Chris I've heard about, and I don't think that there could be too many like that, then rumors are that his father is someone high up within the Rocket hierarchy. I bet he'll have his father's job within a couple years."
Chris watched Espeon and Umbreon playing briefly before returning his attention to the stack of papers in his hands. Somewhere amid the details was something that he knew he needed. He just had to find it. In the past two weeks, he had gotten the two pokémon to trust him completely, and they refused to let anyone else get remotely close to them without him being there reassuring them.
"Ralts?" came the soft, musical voice from beside him.
Chris smiled, pulling out another pokéblock and feeding it to the pokémon. "Not yet. There's still more work to do. Everything must be absolutely perfect before everything goes into implementation. A few more days, and it will be a day that Team Rocket will long remember."
Ralts glanced at the two playing pokémon. "Ralts."
"Espe."
Ralts glanced up at Chris.
Davis and Parker stood in the lab, watching the enclosure. "Why do you think he sits there daily going over all the project notes?" Davis asked.
"Haven't the faintest. And furthermore, don't really care. Keeps him busy and away from me, that's good enough for me. If I don't have to deal with him, then that's all the better."
"You don't like him, do you?"
"Not really. He's just… off. Too much of a drone. Think that once you become an Elite, the completely mess with your head, screwing up the way you perceive and interact with everyone. It's just creepy how cold and sadistic he is. Arrogant ass."
The both turned back to their stations, neither aware of the smile now forming on their subject's lips.
Two days later
The halls were dark and deserted, everyone in their rooms sleeping, save for one lone figure, slipping quietly amidst the shadows. There was no longer enough time to wait, things had to be stopped now. A few cleverly forged data ROM's were scattered about, showing that someone inside the project was also under the employ of a private corporation, and was intending to sabotage the project. Of course, a certain Elite that happened to discover that would have to disappear. It was inevitable. The figure stopped in front of the door where Chris was staying, setting a small charge on the door. It was secluded from the others, so that only it would be destroyed in the blast. The others should be alright, though a bit shaken, and of course, some would find their future with Rocket a bit short, once the 'incriminating evidence' was discovered.
Would be a shame that all the data concerning Full Control would be destroyed as well, but it was unavoidable. There must be nothing left from which Rocket could try to start the project over from left. Only one other thing had to be taken care of. Turning down the hallway, the figure made it's way to the labs.
"Dawn, Dusk." The figure called softly. "Come on, we have to get out of here now." Two pokéballs were held out.
"Umbreon."
"I know you don't like being in them, but trust me, it won't be for very long. I just have to make certain that I can get you two out of here quickly. Trust me, okay?"
"Espe." The two nodded, allowing themselves to be returned to the balls.
"What's going on in here?" The lights flicked on, everything freezing for one brief second that seemed to last an eternity, then everything happened at once.
"Hey, you're stealing the pokémon!" The patrolling guard said, starting to reach for the alarm. He never reached it, however, as the whole building shook from the explosion of the bomb. Followed by several other explosions. The lab rocked as an explosion blasted through it, the gas mains on fire. Glass shattered, a shard swiping the masked figures forehead, the guard getting covered in debris.
Apparently, the initial explosion had ruptured the gas main, setting off a larger explosion than originally intended. Maybe it was fortunate, causing further setbacks just in case.
Hand covering the bleeding cut, the figure stumbled out through the rubble of the outer wall, heading out into the night. The job wasn't complete yet. The two pokémon still had to be taken to safety.
Dawn light breaking over the horizon. The sound of running water. The figure collapsed on the bank. How far had he traveled in the night? He wasn't certain. But far enough to be safe. He withdrew the two pokéballs out. "Espeon, Umbreon, come out."
The two pokémon appeared in a flash of red light, released from the balls. They sat, silently watching the figure.
The figure rolled ever, a gloved hand brushing against the forehead injury. The wound wasn't anything major, though it would heal into a permanent scar.
"Umbre?" the pokémon asked, nudging him.
"I'll be alright, Dusk. It's you I'm concerned about. You too, Dawn." He scratched them behind the ears, their favorite spot. "It's not safe for you two anymore. You have to go away. Find someplace safe, where you won't be found. Or find someone you know that will protect you."
"Espe." Dawn said, shaking her head adamantly.
"It's not safe for me, either. I'd take you with me, but if I'm found, and you're with me, then… it wouldn't be good for either of us. And I wouldn't be able to stop them again." He held the balls out in open palms. "Go. Be safe. I'll try to find you again when I can."
"Espeon." The two took the balls into their mouths, giving a light nod before running off into the woods.
