Chapter 2 – Dreams and memories
The hospital was dark
and silent, it's corridors deserted since most of the patients were
asleep and the nighttime nurses only checked on them from time to
time. No one noticed the cloud of fog that slipped under the door to
Walter's room, solidifying on the other side.
Alucard had no trouble
seeing in the dim light the moon and lit monitors of countless
machines provided. Soundlessly he walked towards his Angel, sitting
down in a chair next to his bed. Wires were wrapped around Walter's
body like a spider's web, connecting him with the beeping machines
that monitored his body.
Of course the Immortal
had no need for human machines to judge the
state of Walter's health. He could hear the strong, steady beat of
his heart and the blood rushing through his veins. He could see the
bandage wrapped around his Angel's head and those wrapped around his
fingers, where his own wires had cut into the flesh. Walter's eyes
were moving rapidly under his closed lids, completely caught up in
some kind of dream.
It reminded Alucard of
the way Integra had looked during the emergency operation. She too
had been almost as pale as a vampire, but her face hadn't looked
relaxed in sleep as Walter's did, fine lines of worry vanishing and
making him look younger.
So vulnerable. Alucard
never forgot that most of his friends and companions
were merely mortal, but seeing them hurt always brought that fact
into sharp focus again. It reminded him just how fragile humans
were and how easily they could be lost.
He had offered his
immortality to both Walter and Integra and both had refused, even
though their reasons had differed. Yet he wished to just override the
choice Walter had made and turn him anyway, keeping him forever.
Sighing Alucard shook
his head. Such foolishness. Forcing his Angel into Immortality would
only lead to resentment, the very same unhappiness that already ruled
the policewoman. No, his Angel had to come to him out of his free
will or not at all.
A slight change in the
heart monitors steady beeping roused the vampire from his musings. It
seemed that Walter's dreams had intensified, the mortal's lips moving
in his sleep even thought no sound escaped them. Intrigued Alucard
leaned closer.
It had been a long time
since he had been able to read Walter's mind. The other man's
defenses were good and even though Alucard could have easily breached
them, he was unwilling to force his way into his beloved's mind, when
his Angel tried so hard to keep him out.
But now the defenses
were lowered, weakened by sleep and the exhaustion his injuries had
brought with them. Seizing his chance Alucard easily slipped into
Walter's dreams.

Walter's eyes shot open as he awoke from his dream, the scream
that had just fallen from his lips still echoing in the darkness of
his room. Struggling out of his blankets the teen got up from his bed
and stripped out of the pajama
bottoms that were plastered to his groin, silently reminding him of
the nature of his dream.
Sighing the young man dressed in a new pair of pants and got back
into bed. Hopefully he would be able to sleep uninterrupted
now, but he doubted it. The dreams of long black hair and fiery red
eyes had haunted him for a while now and they obviously had no
intention of going away. Damn Alucard for looking the way he did.
While the Immortal had been looking feminine and fragile Walter's
feelings had never strayed away from mere friendship. But then the
damn vampire just had to change, growing taller and shaping his
features into a more masculine appearance. His hair was still as long
as it had been before and the teen continuously found himself
wondering if it was as soft as it looked.
Walter was sure that he could have lived with being attracted to
the handsome vampire, but Alucard seemed to have caught on to his
interest and was now continuously teasing
him. Whenever he tried to study, to train or even out on a mission
the Immortal was around, posing and always drawing the youth's
attention. It was distracting and annoying, especially since every
time he got lost in staring at the vampire he was then confronted
with one of Alucard's triumphant smirks.
Finally giving up on getting more sleep this night Walter reached
into his nightstand and produced a pack of cigarettes. Shaking on of
them out and lighting it he got up from the bed, not bothering to get
out of his pajamas. At this time of the
day, right before dawn, everybody else was sleeping anyway. Even
Alucard usually slept at this hour.
Silently closing the door to his room behind himself Walter
stepped out into the hallway, heading towards the library.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As soon as the door had closed the surroundings changed, turning
from the insides of the castle into a dark nighttime forest.
An owl was calling high up in the trees and the pale moon illuminated
the two figures crossing a small clearing.
Walter was almost completely hidden in the shadows, his dark coat
absorbing the light as he stepped towards the trees again. Alucard on
the other hand wore his usual red coat, not bothering about the fact
that it's color shone brightly in the moon light, making it almost
impossible to hide. Walter had already scolded the Immortal for this,
but the only thing that had gotten him was a grin and so he had
quickly given up, sighing as he turned his back towards the vampire.
Even now he was still grumbling under his breath as he searched
his way through the thick under bush, the
lack of light making it hard to not stumble over roots and stones.
Alucard could of course have helped him, but the Immortal had decided
to stay behind his human companion, amused
at the trouble Walter had with finding his way.
His amusement changed to instant alertness
as he picked up a tiny sound, not too far ahead of them. Swiftly
moving forward one of his hands descended
onto Walter's shoulder, stopping the teen from going forward.
“They're right in front of us.” He mentally informed his
companion.
Nodding his head Walter crept further towards the point Alucard
had indicated, his breathing the only sound he emitted.
A few steps more and he could hear them too, voices chanting
something that sounded like a prayer. A little further and the teen
spotted a clearing, hiding behind a bush as he looked at the scene in
front of him.
Five vampires gathered in a circle, standing around a pentagram
they had painted on the ground. A naked
woman was tied there, runes painted all over her body in something
the teen guessed to be blood. Each of the vampires was hidden by a
blood-red cloak, books clutched in their hands as they continued
their chant.
A small shift in the air alerted Walter to the fact that Alucard
had appeared right behind him, pressing himself against his back and
peering over his shoulder. If it had been possible at the moment the
youth would have cursed out loud. There was enough space for Alucard
to stand next to him and yet the Immortal had plastered himself to
his back, forcing Walter to feel every inch of his body.
Shivers raced down his spine, his skin prickling everywhere they
touched. Desperately trying to fight his arousal Walter almost missed
the words Alucard whispered in his mind. “This scum thinks they
become powerful by raising some ancient
demon, worthless fools. They don't even deserve to be immortal.”
Rolling his eyes in annoyance Walter
ignored the rest of Alucard's rant. It was the same every
time they went out to fight. Concentrating on shifting his
body away from Alucard's Walter leaned forward, a twig snapping under
his weight.
Five heads immediately turned towards their hiding place, hissing
in irritation and annoyance. Before Walter had even fully emerged
from the thick under bush the first
vampire's head dropped, cut off by his wires. The other vampires
seemed shocked that a human would attack them, giving the teen the
opportunity to slice a second one to pieces.
Finally comprehending the fact that the human whom they were
facing knew what he was doing the other three attacked him at once.
His wires whirling around himself Walter tried to wrap them around
his three opponents, but they were lucky and fast, escaping all of
his attempts. Why the hell wasn't Alucard helping him?
The split second he had thought this he was distracted, two of the
vampires flying at him and pinning him to the ground. “Alucard.”
He cried out for his immortal companion,
while his wires decapitated one of his attackers. But the other had
recognized his hands as the source of danger and had pinned them to
the ground, making it impossible for the
teen to maneuver his wires.
The vampire who was attacking him was already bending down towards
his neck, when a bullet ripped through his head and dissolved him
into a cloud of ashes. Panting heavily Walter took the hand that was
offered him and got up from the ground, looking around the clearing.
The woman was still tied to the ground where he also spotted four
piles of ashes. “Where's the fifth?”
Smirking Alucard tilted his head towards the forest
before vanishing in a swirl of red coat and
shadows, giving chase to the vampire that had escaped them. Sighing
Walter walked over towards the woman, freeing her and helping her up
from the ground.
