Special thanks to Khellendros_Draconis for reviewing! That's my only review so far but I'm glad it's intriguing so far! Maybe next time I'll give enough time between posts to get more reviews! As far as Alex goes I can't tell you what's up with her because that would ruin the plot, but I can tell you this: all things are related. You'll see as we go. So now, let's go!
Last Time:
“I’ll make it fine. I’ve almost dried out by now.” As soon as Alex finished her sentence, thunder struck loud and rumbling not far off. The commotion made Alex start and she barely managed to contain a loud yelp. “Maybe...someone else has other plans. I’ll make it, I’ll be okay.” Alex tried to look confident, but was not looking forward to making the trip.
Chapter 2: Rumbling Thunder
“Nonsense. I have a small hotel room a block from here. It’s paid for by the church and it won’t be as nice as your hotel I’m sure, but it will be nicer than the cold and rain. Tomorrow you can get up and head across town when the weather is nicer.” The priest’s smile was inviting and so were his good looks. She felt a little foreboding at the situation, but she accepted despite it.
“All right. But... won’t it look bad for you, taking a young woman home for the night?” The priest let out a deep rumbling laugh at this and the sound of his laughter was intoxicating to Alex. “I didn’t mean to imply that I expected anything of the sort, but I just wondered how it would look...” Alex blushed deeply and dropped her gaze to the floor.
“Should anyone notice or ask, I will tell them that I was simply helping a soul in need. If they don’t believe that, I’ll ask them how many Hail Mary’s they think I should offer to repent.” He winked at her and her blush doubled. He laughed again, and for a moment, Alex felt intoxicated with the sound. It was decided and they set out, dashing through the rain toward the priest’s room. Once there, they had several flights of stairs to trudge up and left them quite soggy. Once they were in the apartment, the priest showed Alex to the guest room and the bathroom before retreating to his own room to change his clothes. Upon emerging in a pair of black sweats and a form fitting black t-shirt, the priest walked to the guest room, knocking.
“Alex? Is everything all right?”
“More or less.”
“May I come in?”
“Yes.” The priest entered the room and was shocked to see Alex in one of his button up shirts. She was blushing brightly and biting her lip in a nervous way. “I’m sorry. My entire travel bag is soaked through and all my clothes are wet...” She was visibly shivering and he smiled despite himself at her choice of clothing. He motioned for her to follow him and he brought a blanket for her to curl up on the livingroom couch with. He moved into the kitchen and made them a couple of mugs of hot chocolate. Alex was already beginning to doze, staring out the window in the common space. The priest caught her by surprise when he place a steaming mug in front of her face. She accepted eagerly and sipped, her eyes trailing back out the window. The priest sat next to her a little obliviously and her vision was filled with his beautiful smooth skin. Without really thinking about it, she set her mug on the coffee table and planted a gentle kiss on his cheek.
The priest set his own mug down and turned to her slowly. Alex blushed furiously and began stammering.
“I’m...so sorry. That was inappropriate. I just wanted to thank you for letting me stay here. And thanks for the hot chocolate.”
“You don’t have to apologize, Alex. It was sweet.” He considered her over the top of his glasses and his look had changed. Alex mistook his curious look for discomfort.
“Well, I better let you get to bed., I’m sure you have an early day tomorrow, Father.”
“Abel.”
“Abel.” She gazed at him, wanting to stay with him. “I’ll get to bed then.”
“You don’t have to go, Alex, you may stay up if you like.” Alex desperately wanted to take him up on his offer and stay awake with him, but most assuredly not in the manner he meant. She didn’t trust herself just then to be so close to him without being closer, so she excused herself, finishing her cocoa. She hung her clothes in the bathroom to drip dry and freshened up before retiring to her bedroom. She listened and heard Abel make his way to the other room in the suit.
Alex lay in bed in the dark, listening to the pounding rain. She was just drifting into sleep when a loud crack of thunder woke her. She nearly jumped out of bed with her fright and clung to the sheets, trying to settle her heart down. She had just about completely relaxed when another crack of thunder shook the room while the lightening lit the room like the day. She yelped loudly and sat up in bed, too frightened to think straight. Her hair was on end and her fingers were twitching in anxiety. Just when her breathing began to settle her door opened to reveal a tall figure hidden in the shadows from the hallway. Alex had a long twisted and spiked dagger held to the figure’s throat, her chest heaving, and her face twisted in anger.
“Alex, what in the world is the matter?”
“F-Father?” Alex’s eyes went wide at her stupidity. Of course it was Abel, who else would it be?
“Yes, Alex? I heard a scream, so I came to see what was wrong.”
“I’m... terribly sorry, Abel. I--” Her sentence was cut off as another rumble of thunder shook the walls, tearing a scream from her throat. She dropped the dagger and threw herself at Abel, clutching the front of his shirt, trembling terribly.
“I... I’m... afraid of thunder. Please... don’t leave.” Another clap of thunder punctuated her pathetic request, making her bury her face in his chest. Abel wrapped his arms around her, finding her uncontrollable trembling endearing.
“It’s only thunder, Alex.”
“It sounds...” She was wringing his shirt in her hands. “It sounds terrible. It sounds like war.”Abel’s smile faded at her words and he suddenly realized that this was no simple irrational fear. Many had seen strife and warfare since Armageddon and it was easy to forget that regular citizens could experience it first hand like he had. He held her close, petting her hair comfortingly
“I’ll stay with you Alex. Don’t worry.”
Abel inhaled the scent of Alex’s hair deeply. She smelled sweet and her trembling had calmed considerably and he couldn’t help but think that perhaps some of her trembling was from being so close to him. Alex was now starting to relax, though she found herself trembling and melting into Abel’s chest. She realized suddenly that Abel had removed his sweat pants and was only wearing boxers and his t-shirt. She shuddered involuntarily at his half bare thighs pressed against hers. Abel similarly became quite aware of the warmth growing between them. The thunder seemed to have stopped for the time being and Alex pulled her face up from his chest to gaze into his handsome face.
It was then that she realized that he had let down his beautiful hair. She took a stray strand in her fingers and played with it idly. Abel, gazed down at her as she played with his hair and his urge to kiss her was overwhelming. He settled for placing a chaste kiss on her forehead. Alex listened to his heartbeat, following it’s quickened rhythm by tapping her finger on his chest in time with it. Abel realized that she’d picked up on his anxiety and hoped she wouldn’t be offended. Alex thought maybe it was just because she’d startled him when he came in. She snuggled closer to him and discovered that he had grown hard against her. Abel was mortified with his body’s response, desperately hoping that Alex wouldn’t notice.
Alex was shocked. She had never thought that Abel was interested in her. She nuzzled into his neck and he allowed it. She slipped a hand down his side and around his waist and he nuzzled her temple. She took this as acceptance and slipped a thigh between his legs, brushing against his erection. He gasped and squeezed her.
“Alex, I--” his apology was cut short by her kiss, sweet and searching. She was trembling still, her hands threading into his silky hair. Her tongue brushed his lower lip as if she was afraid he might bite her. Unable to resist her tender manner, he cradled her head and slipped his tongue past her lips, tracing the contours of her mouth. She melted and became pliant in his hands. He kissed her passionately, her body molding completely to his and when he pulled away from her, he had unwittingly pressed her against the door jamb.
He stood there over her, their faces inches away. Her heart was pounding thunderously against his chest and her face was flushed brightly. She gazed up at him, completely open to him, ready to give him whatever he asked for. His body ached for the pleasure and his soul ached for the connection, but he knew it wasn’t right. Just then, she kissed his lower lip tentatively and he moved to kiss her neck, finding yet another element of her that made him ache in unspeakable ways.
“Alex, I.... we... can’t do this. It’s not right. You’re welcome to stay here, if you want, but... we can’t keep doing this.”
“I’m....I’m sorry, Father.” He was crushed that she reverted to this appellation. Before he could apologize himself, she had slipped from his grasp and was crawling into bed, her back to him. He cursed himself, knowing he shouldn’t have led her on. He wondered if he had further damaged the seemingly perpetually demoralized young woman. He sighed quietly, bidding her good night as he closed to door behind him, heading toward his own room. As he lay in bed, his thoughts dwelled on her. Likewise, Alex fell asleep, wishing Abel hadn’t stopped what he’d been doing.
