Chapter Two

Two

Jigen had been up for hours with that damned tome, and it was so vague in its readings, he couldn’t ascertain the beginning to the end. Hell, for all he knew, he could be reading the damned thing upside down. He turned the book the other way, despite himself, and the next thing he saw made his eyes grow wide.

The letters on the page frikken, moved. He closed his eyes a moment and shook his head, clearly he needed sleep. He glanced at the clock: 1:32am. Lack of sleep, see, a perfectly good reason to…

He looked back at the pages of the tome, the letters rearranging themselves on the seemingly ancient page that couldn’t possibly contain the name that was imprinted upon it right before his eyes.

Daisuke Jigen,

He waited for more, and more most certainly came:

Thrice the moons have waned since your hand hath sought this jewel. And twice will fires reign if you play the part of fool. So read carefully these words, for they’ll disappear you see, just like your mind; within the jewel’s possession are you, Daisuke. Or with the need for love remain blind?

Quod Nutrit Me Destruit.

Jigen had already penned everything down before it faded away, the pages filled with that foreign script again, clearly not meant for deciphering. The last four words, though, he knew them all too well.

What nurtures me destroys me.

He looked back over his shoulder at his sleeping comrade, the jewel still in Lupin’s vice-like grip. He sighed, that whole bit about blind love, he knew that too. It came with the pangs of loving someone when you were most certain they didn’t love you in return. Just like Jigen…He wasn’t going to go there. Not tonight anyway, he had enough on his mind, his resolve already adamant. He had to get a hold of that jewel, and demolish the damned thing before something bad happened…

Hold on. Since when did Jigen believe things magic books told him? He was more a common sense sort of man, wasn’t he? Or maybe it was because that tome had so clearly magnified everything at stake.

Flash.

As the cold steel barrel of the magnum was gently pressed against the back of Lupin’s head, Jigen’s eyes were totally void of any emotion as he pulled the hammer back with a click; causing Lupin’s eyes to snap open.
