winterfrau: Well, not a very auspicious start, but perhaps this chapter will be better. Yes, it has definitely been 30 years (as of chapter one, we've moved on a little in chapter). Yes, the crusnik children age very slowly as we'll see very shortly. Sorry I came off as a review whore but, that wasn't my intention. I've gone over this chapter several times before posting it, making sure it sets things up the way I want them. And "pwning"??? No, Alucard won't be humping everything in sight, but he will be dripping with sex appeal because that's how he is in my eyes. mmmm... *ahem* We won't be seeing Isaak and Cain too soon, but hang in there, we'll see them relieved before *TOO* long.
Retro Lamb: Thanks! I'm glad you liked the ending and the story over all. I was really going for a crash-bang dramatic opening to the story, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. SHHH! Don't try to guess everything all at once. This story is going to work backwards to fill in the missing years with Hugue and Alex and the children. Thanks for the praise! Read on and enjoy!
Astharoshe: lol thanks for the praise, I'm really glad you liked the opening chapter! It's a very good song. Garbage is kinda weird and nobody I know really likes them, but I like this song and I heard this song and it's kinda what started the xover idea in my head.
DarkCrusnikMagician: we will see whose it is! Well, we know it's Alex's at least :P Sorry about it being short, but the idea was to hook you and riddle you with questions muahahahahahaha! I'm evil like that. Yeah, the start was hard for me, cause I didn't want to make this just a boring continuation from the second story, so we're going to be working backwards to fill in all the gaps!
Min: I'm glad you enjoyed the opening chapter and yeah it came kinda soon, but I've been waiting to start the sequel for so long! It's already planned out, just like the last story. Well, we're moving on and the xover is happening fairly quickly, so read on and enjoy! And you're welcome for the chapter ;)
Darkephoenix: ROFLMAO! *hands you a t-shirt that just reads: squee!* ;*
Chapter 2: Time to Meet the Neighbors
Alexandra stood, looking out at the grounds of the Vatican from Lady Catherina’s office. Her thoughts drifted to that miserable night ten years ago when she’d appeared suddenly on the poor Cardinal’s doorstep, her children in toe. She could still feel that anguish, though it was more a dull ache now, rather than a piercing, breathtaking, pain. She hid the torment, covering it with a thin layer of composure that she had to remake everyday of her life.
“Alexandra?”
“Yes, Mother?” Alex turned away from the window, approaching Lady Catherina’s desk, standing straight at her side.
“Still calling me that.” Catherina’s eyes crinkled in the corners as she smiled up at Alex. “My dear, I wanted to discuss our visitors, as they will be here shortly.”
“Ah, yes. Queen Esther has finally sent them to us, has she?” Alex gathered her skirt, sitting on the floor next to Lady Catherina’s chair. The Cardinal continued to stare at Alexandra, amazed at the difference in their appearances. Catherina had streaks of white amidst her long blonde curls. Her face was relatively smooth, but crinkles had formed at the corners of her eyes and her lips from smiling and frowning throughout her lifetime. Catherina still had a good deal of living to do, but she had aged and her eyes could tell you the burdens that lifetime had already carried. Alex, on the other hand, looked exactly as she had the day she first arrived at the Vatican. The younger looking woman rested her cheek against her adopted mother’s knee, a strange custom that Catherina had grown so accustomed to. She was not allowed to have her own children because her station would not allow it and Alex’s child-like attachment to her in her later years brought comfort to her and quelled the maternal pangs she’d been feeling for so many years. Catherina petted Alex’s hair, careful not to undo the carefully wrapped bun resting at the back of her head.
“Yes, Esther was quite insistent that they work with us. She wants them ‘properly trained’ apparently. She seems to think that you would be the only one able to control the organization’s most powerful member. If you hadn’t agreed, Esther might have come down here herself to speak with you.” Alex shuddered, picking up on Catherina’s quiet jibe.
“Ah, yes. Our little squeaking, screaming Esther, who couldn’t even handle the sight of a Crusnik without losing her head. How quickly she removed herself to an enlightened pedestal from where she could watch over her people like a proper queen. It’s amazing what a title can do to people. I must say, I much prefer her as a Queen than a sniveling nun. I daresay I might not have disliked a visit from her all that much.” Catherina smiled at the flare of their old rivalry, remembering how venomous Esther had been at times.
“Yes, she has done well for her people. They are lucky that she took over at such a young age. She will spend her lifetime reforming her empire and by the time her life comes to a close, she will have stabilized it, possibly forever.”
“Yes, once we all moved on, we really did prove to be good people. You did such a good job fixing your dolls, mother.” Alex smiled and nuzzled into the older woman’s knee. They fell into a comfortable silence, Alex’s mind wandering, but not far. “Will he be there too, Mother?”
“Yes. He will not be here for the initial meeting, he is scheduled to arrive later than they do, but he will be here for their so called training. Two Crusniks are better than one.”
“Hmm. Is that what they still call me?”
“Hush. That’s what we call you, yes. Some of my guards have taken to calling you a demi-god since you’ve taken to haunting the halls at night. They can’t ever see you, but they assure me that they know you are there.” Alex grinned, her fangs flashing in the morning sun.
“Well, now, that doesn’t sound like evidence to me.”
“Well, my dear, I am inclined to believe them nonetheless.”
“It’s not my fault this place is crawling with young, handsome, untouchable men.”
“Not all of them have taken vows. Besides, most are willing to disregard those vows, especially if it means attention from you.” Alex whipped her head around to gaze at the Cardinal, flushing.
“You think I don’t know what they talk about when they talk about you? They have no idea how old you really are. They aren’t frightened by your non-presence. They find it... very interesting to think of you being so nearby without being able to see you.”
“Hmm. Perhaps I should really scare the wits out of them.”
“My dear, I fear for a good deal of them, you would find their wits have already left them.” Alex laughed outright, replacing her cheek against the Cardinal’s knee.
“Mother?”
“Yes, Alex.”
“Do you ever wish we were back together?” Her voice had dropped to a whisper.
“Oh, dearest.” Catherina sighed heavily, looking at the back of Alex’s head. “I will not lie to you. It hurts me to see the two of you getting closer again, but being still so far away. You were both hurt so deeply by the presence and then absence of one another, and all I could do was stand back and watch my children fumble towards one another. I want, in the deepest part of my heart, to see you two together again, but only if it means that you will be happy again. You are so beautiful, Alexandra. You will be forever beautiful, even in your boundless sorrow. However, nothing can outshine the beauty of your genuine smile.” Alex sighed and let her Mother’s words sink in. She knew deep down that Catherina’s words were true, that they were happiest when they were together. Alex could still feel betrayal though, whenever he was close enough to touch her. Not old wounds and old words of hurt, but betrayal to a love she had lost before she should have.
“We shall see, Mother. I can’t deny that I miss him terribly some days, but...” Alex’s voice trailed off, her fingers brushing over the black taffeta of her skirt.
“Alexandra, you can’t mourn forever.” Catherina laid her warm hand on Alex’s shoulder comfortingly and Alex sighed softly.
“It’s been so long. I don’t know how to stop.” Alex stood and took her place at the window again as Catherina returned to her papers. Alex had a view of the main courtyard from Catherina’s window and her eyes lit up when three strange looking figures walked into view, looking around them rather shifty eyed.
“Hey, Tres?”
“Yes?” Alex smiled at the inflection in his voice.
“I believe our guests are here. I’ll stay with Mother. Why don’t you go bring them up?”
“Sure thing, My Lady.” Alex turned to watch him go, a wicked grin spreading across her features.
“I hate to see him go, but I love to watch him leave.”
“Alexandra! For Heaven’s sake.”
“What? He’s perfectly self-aware and supposedly fully equipped.”
“And how on Earth would you know that?” Catherina turned to regard her. Alex’s grin widened.
“I asked him once, very long ago.”
“You have no shame!”
“Nope, not anymore.” Alex’s smile began to fade and she turned back out the window, her blue-green eyes glittering in the light.
“That isn’t what I meant, Alexandra.” Catherina’s eyes shone with her dismay.
“I know, Mother. It was so long ago now. Another curse of the Crusnik is that your mind stays sharp and memories are as clear at the day they were created.” They fell back into silence, Catherina unable to truly concentrate on her paperwork and Alex unable to concentrate on anything other than their approaching guests. Alex distracted herself by conjuring up a familiar face, once she’d thought of everyday for many years. Tres’s soft knock came minutes later. And Alexandra turned toward the door, but remained standing by the window. Lady Catherina stood as the three guests gave a slight bow of respect. Catherina and Alexandra both returned the gesture.
Alexandra let her eyes roam over all three of the newcomers in front of her. The first was a younger gentleman with black shoulder-length hair pulled back into a neat pony tail. He wore black pin-striped pants and a black vest, a white shirt, a red tie, and a monocle. The second was a woman with startlingly white blonde hair. Her crystal blue eyes glittered from behind a pair of glasses and she wore a business suit with a very masculine cut. In between these two stood a very tall man with a bright red fedora, matching duster and cravat, a grey suit and bright orange glasses. He had a maniacal grin plastered on his face, his fangs quite obvious to anyone who cared to look. Alex was rather intrigued by the odd group.
She imagined she looked quite strange to them, dressed in a lovely black, silk, over-bust, corset, full length black taffeta skirt, her skin as pale and perfect as marble. She had her hair pulled up into a tight bun, curled tendrils spilling loose here and there, a rather impressive black choker with black bead work dangling against her chest. She was very well dressed, but quite out of place among the rest of the woman at the Vatican, all of whom wore white habits. Catherina wore her red robes as usual, her massive head dress creating a harsh backdrop for her giant golden curls.
“Welcome, Sir Integra Hellsing, Alucard, and Walter. I trust you had an enjoyable trip?”
“It went smoothly enough, Cardinal Sforza.” Integra’s voice was hardened and incongruent with her small frame. It wasn’t unfeminine, but she wielded a stern tone that brooked no conversation once she had decided something. Alexandra was impressed. They were in unfamiliar, once hostile ground, yet this woman carried herself as though she owned the place. She smiled mentally, knowing they would have many interesting interactions ahead of them.
“I must thank you for agreeing to this meeting.”
“Well, truth be told, we weren’t exactly given much say in the matter. There was no agreement to be had.” Integra’s voice took on a sour note that Alexandra decided she didn’t quite approve of. Tres, standing at the door, gave Alexandra a quizzical look, raising his eyebrows. She smiled gently at him, stepping forward.
“All the same, I thank you, and I assure your time here will be well spent. There is much our organizations can learn from one another. The time for religious feuds is over, we must unite if we are to be successful in the fight against the Third Power.”
“Yes, it seems that their leader is utterly unlike other Methuselah or vampires, and though we’ve only had a run in with his lower downs, they prove problematic as their missions are quite large scale and typically catastrophic.” The anger over the situation was evident in Integra’s tone.
Alex had let her gaze drop to the floor, drifting in and out of the tiring conversation, not truly caring for the mindless pleasantries that passed between Catherina and Lady Hellsing. Something brought her attention back to the people in the room and the conversation at hand. Alex felt the distinct feeling of someone trying to read her thoughts. She immediately shut her mind off, walling up her thoughts. She raised her gaze and found that, though his eyes were covered by his glasses, the man with the ridiculous hat and duster was quite obviously staring at her. When she acknowledged him by raising her eyes to meet his, that preposterous grin widened. He tried to speak to her mind, but she spurned his advance, once again letting her mind wander, but keeping it closed off to the others in the room. So, he was something more than just a tall man in a garish costume. Alex’s thoughts were somewhere else, more and more time passing as the Cardinal and Lady Hellsing exchanged preliminary reports on recent events.
The hair on the back of Alex’s neck stood on end and her head snapped to attention, her eyes somewhat wide with shock. She closed her eyes and turned her head to the right, dipping it a little as if listening to a beautiful but quiet melody. A smile broke across her face as she listened to a sound she had not heard in some many lonely months. The conversation at hand grew quiet, ended altogether as Alex focused on the keening whine as it rose and fell in pitch. It always reminded her of whales or porpoises, but it was altogether different. Just as haunting, just as beautiful, but completely different. She listened and listened until nothing else was present but that lovely song, a vampire song. She could hear the words slowly melt into being, intertwining with the soft notes, a true song emerging. Alex opened her eyes and looked up to find that the others had stopped to listen to the noise as well. She smiled, looking up at the strange man with the fedora.
“Your child is looking for you. She has quite the singing voice.” Walter smiled at her and Integra merely gave her a once over look. Catherina returned Alex’s smile, glad to see that something had brought her happiness. In the next moment, a young woman with short blond hair and blood red eyes dissolved into the room through the wall. Alex chuckled quietly as Tres’s face took on a comical look of shock. He raised his gun, but before anyone could say anything Catherina immediately fell to chastising him.
“For Heaven’s sake, Tres, put the gun down. This is the last member of the Hellsing party. Lady Seras Victoria, I take it? Welcome to Rome.”
“Thank you, ma’am!” Alex grinned once more as the word came out sounding very much like “mum”.
“Oh, I’m terribly sorry! I haven’t introduced everyone to my right hand woman yet.” Lady Catherina smiled and turned slightly toward Alexandra to bring attention to her. She started almost imperceptibly as all the eyes in the room turned their attention to her. She ducked her head in a small bow and prayed that Catherina would move on quickly. She hated having every pair of eyes in the room trained on her.
“Welcome to Rome.” Alex remained quiet after that and Catherina continued.
“Much as Alucard is your primary weapon in this fight, Alexandra, along with Father Nightroad are our primary weapons. Alex also has fledglings, much like Sir Alucard.” Alex flushed slightly, sending a heated look at Catherina. She realized that Catherina was merely trying to create bridges of communication, but she had chosen a topic that Alex was quite protective of. Catherina thanked the small group once again for agreeing to come to Rome and they said their goodbyes as Tres escorted from the Cardinal’s office to their rooms.
“Well, they’re an interesting bunch, hmm?” Alex turned her back to the room and took up her haunt at the window.
“Indeed. No odder than our group. You know, it’s funny that you’ve taken up a regular post at my window.”
“Why’s that?” Alex turned to see the reminiscent gaze painting Catherina’s wizened features.
“Because when you first left, Abel refused to leave that spot, convinced that you two would send me word and he could find out where you’d gone.”
