Ch. 2: Breaking Down
***********************************************************************
The mood of the Suzaku seven upon landing in Hokkan was
subdued. Even Chiriko felt uneasy. Nuriko was beside himself with worry, both
for the priestess and his friends.
Miaka had come to him to cry on his shoulder a couple of
times after the big blow-up on the ship, lamenting the unfairness of the
situation and blasting Tasuki for being everything from hateful to a liar. Nuriko knew Miaka was speaking out of hurt
and confusion, but that didn’t make her tirades any easier to listen to.
Finally, Nuriko hesitantly suggested that maybe the bandit
wasn’t doing anything wrong, and that he had no intention of hurting her. Maybe, just maybe, they really did love each
other. Miaka had given him a betrayed
look, and run off. She hadn’t spoken to
him since.
For their part, Tamahome and Tasuki were staying far away
from each other, not even meeting each other’s eyes. They both looked thin and strained, and the dark circles under
their eyes proved that neither was sleeping well, if at all. They were obviously trying to spare Miaka
having to see them together, even after all the horrible things she said, but
she was too wrapped up in her own hurt to see it.
************************************************************************
Tasuki and Tamahome had taken to leaving the group whenever
there was a break for rest or food with the pretense of scouting the area for
possible danger. Drifting in a fog as
they were, at a rest break neither man noticed the other, and they knocked
right into each other.
The two just looked at each other, really looked at each
other for the first time since being together on the ship. Dark circles under the eyes, a little too
thin…
“You look like shit,” they both said simultaneously.
Tasuki gave a short chuckle. “Sorry I ran into ya, I usually know where ya are. Guess I must be tired.” Tasuki apologized, not knowing what else to
say.
Tamahome was ready to run in the opposite direction, not
trusting himself alone with the other man, but something occurred to him. “Wait a minute, what do you mean? You can sense me, can’t you?”
Tasuki just looked incredulous. “I thought I was just goin’ nuts. But you’re feelin’ it too?”
“Yeah. What the hell
is going on here?” Tamahome dragged a
hand through his hair, frustrated. “I
can’t eat, I can’t sleep, and all I do is think about you.”
“I know what ya mean. I want ya so bad it hurts.”
Tasuki shook his head, trying to clear it. “But there’s nothing we can do about it ‘til Miaka figures out we’re
serious ‘bout this.”
“Screw that!” Tamahome exclaimed, body beginning to shake
with the effort of keeping himself under control. “I’m sick of being the nice guy!
I need you and I’m tired of waiting for her to come around. Aren’t you?”
“Of course! I’m at
the end of my rope too, but it’s more than just sparing Miaka. If we start sneakin’ off to be together
every chance we get, she’s gonna know and it’s just gonna piss her off more and
she’s gonna make damn sure you can’t stay here. You’ll be gone, outta my reach and there won’t be a thing we can
do about it. Dammit, I can’t lose you,
Tama!”
“I get all that, but I think being apart is seriously
hurting us. I’ve just got this feeling
that there’s no way I’d survive never being with you again.” He hesitated for a moment, then threw caution
to the wind.
“Just once, she wouldn’t find out,” Tamahome said, coming
closer to the bandit. Tasuki was drawn
forward against his better judgment, and the shiver that passed through his
body had little to do with the chilly air.
“Something amazing is happening between us and I want to find out what
it is. I don’t think we should fight
this anymore. Let’s just let it
happen.”
“If we do this, I won’t be able to let you go again.” Tasuki’s hand came up, mirroring Tamahome’s
own. So close, they were almost
touching…
Grass and dirt crunched underfoot as someone approached, and
both men sprang away from each other, breaking the spell. “Tasuki, you around?” Nuriko called. “Chiriko’s looking for you…” he trailed off,
getting a good look at the scene before him.
Tasuki and Tamahome jumped away from each other, looking
guilty. A growl, a gust of wind and
Tasuki was gone before his tears hit the ground. Tamahome just stared at the spot he had been occupying moments
earlier before crumpling. Nuriko
somehow managed to catch him before he hit the ground. He rocked the heartsick seishi in his arms,
wishing there was something else he could do.
“I’m gonna lose him Nuriko, just like I lost my family. I don’t want to be alone again.”
‘There’s got to be something I can do!’ Nuriko thought,
frustrated.
************************************************************************
Once Tamahome finally settled down a bit, Nuriko went to
Chichiri, only to find that Mitsukake had the same idea. “You know what’s going on here, don’t you?”
Nuriko asked the mage.
Chichiri only nodded.
Nuriko snarled at him.
“Everybody’s miserable and Tama and Tasuki are breaking down here. Tama was shaking so bad he could hardly
walk, and he isn’t taking care of himself.”
“Tasuki’s in the same condition,” Mitsukake added. “I just found him a while ago. He was burning up, and when I tried to help
him he just said he was fine and ran off.
From what little I could read before he took off, Tasuki’s qi is all…
scrambled for some reason; I’ve never seen anything like it before. Chichiri, what’s happening to them?”
“They’re changing. I
don’t know exactly what the end result will be, but I do know it’s incomplete
because they’re staying apart; that’s why they’re getting sick. If they survive this, they’ll be stronger
than they are now,” replied the mage. He sighed, the mask doing little to hide his anxiety. “If those three can’t resolve this and soon,
things will just get worse. There will
be no way for us to get the Shinzaho and save Konan.”
“‘If they survive this?’ If things are that bad, we can’t just sit around and hope
everything works out. What are we gonna
do?” Nuriko demanded.
“There’s nothing we can do.
No one can force Miaka to change her mind, she’s got to figure this out
on her own.”
He started to walk away, but was stopped by Nuriko’s hand
holding his sleeve. There were tears in
his eyes. “We can’t fix this for them,
but do *something*. Please. They’re suffering.”
“I agree,” Mitsukake said quietly. “If this goes on much longer, I don’t know if either one of them
will survive whatever’s happening for more than a few days.”
Chichiri hesitated, then nodded slowly. “I’m not promising anything, but I’ll talk
to Miaka, no da.”
Nuriko smiled slightly as Chichiri walked back to the
group. “And if talking to Miaka doesn’t
work, you get to help me strip the guys naked and lock them in the first
building we can find. Then things will
work themselves out, eh?”
The stoic doctor snorted.
“That’s the best idea I’ve heard in ages,” he agreed smiling, finally
feeling hopeful for the first time in days.
*************
o_O What the hell’s
happening to the guys? And what’s the
Mighty Blue-Hair gonna say to Miaka?
Stay tuned!
Hmm… I might’ve gotten the whole Miaka/Tamahome “I’ll go to
your world!” “No, I’ll go to your
world!” thing backward in the next chappie, so please forgive me if I did. ::sigh::
Like I said, it’s been a while…
To Tasukigirl78: Thank you so much for all your support with
these stories; it’s really motivating!
I hope ya like this one (it actually has a bit of a plot…) ^_^;;
To Yahnkehy: Oh, how I luuuuv the feedback! About Miaka’s reaction: I know what ya
mean. At first I wrote it a little
worse, but reading it over, she just seemed too OOC. It wasn’t really believable, so I opted for what it is now. I still wasn’t too sure about it, so thanks
much for the kudos.
And if you still think this fic is good enough once you’ve
seen more of it, I would absolutely love for you to host these fics! I also like the idea of revisiting the first
part, and if you’d beta for me, so much the better! It’ll take me a while to get back to it (read: 4-month old!!!),
but I’ll get there. Sankyuu!!!! ^_^
