A little walk and talk

Yuki looked at his watch and then back at Kyo, shaking his head slightly.

“What?”

“We’ve been out here so long it’s almost time to pick up Honda-san from work. Are you going to come?” Kyo shrugged.

“I might as well come. Hold on a minute. She’ll be hungry.” Kyo ran inside the house and grabbed a couple rice balls from the fridge, and wrapped it in a napkin before joining Yuki on the path. They walked in silence most of the way to the Sohma building, occasionally glancing at each other and looking away when their eyes met. Kyo opened his mouth and closed it, shaking his head sadly before trying again.

“I’ve been thinking a lot lately about something Haru said a while ago.” Yuki turned his head to Kyo and continued walking beside him.

“What did he say?” Kyo put his hands in his pockets and looked down before speaking.

“Do you remember the endurance run when your bronchial tubes acted up? Haru told Tohru and me how he used to hate you because he thought you were the proverbial rat from the zodiac legend. He told us how when he really got to know you, you were completely different than he had imagined. I thought that I had wasted a lot of time I could have been friends with you because of my hatred for a person that doesn’t exist.”

“I really am different from that rat. I’m not nearly as conniving or stuck up. I wish the rest of the juunishi would get to know me before jumping to conclusions. The same could be said for the cat as well. You are not so bad to be around when you’re not fighting with me.” They fell silent for a small time as their destination grew closer.

“I don’t really wanna fight you anymore. Ya know Yuki, I really misjudged you. I hope you can forgive me someday.” Yuki looked back up at the darkening sky, lightly sighing.

“What about the bet you have with Akito?” Kyo tensed and bristled, running his hand through his hair nervously.

“How do you know about that?” Yuki shook his head sadly.

“I think all the juunishi know, Kyo. Akito probably bragged to Shigure ten minutes after you made the bargain and you know the stupid dog can’t keep his mouth shut.” Kyo hissed angrily.

“Stupid mutt. We should castrate him.”

“That idea has some merit. Maybe it will knock the perversion out of him.”

“Not likely.” They entered the Sohma building where Tohru worked. Surprisingly, the ever-hyper Momiji wasn’t there helping her. Tohru was still scrubbing a counter furiously with at least five minutes still left on her shift. Yuki and Kyo leaned against the wall to wait for her to finish, still planning Shigure’s demise. They were oblivious to the stared aimed in their direction. Tohru was just finishing up her shift when one of her co-workers came over to her and pulled her aside.

“Who are those gorgeous boys who always come to pick you up? Are they your boyfriends?” Tohru began to wave her hands wildly as if to prove her wrong.

“Oh nononononono! They could never . . . I could never. . They’re just friends I swear! But they’re really protective of me; even Kyo says someone would walk off with me if I don’t look sharp, whatever that means.” Yuki and Kyo had started to walk over to her as soon as she had started her tirade and reached her at its end. Kyo clamped his hand on top of her head and ruffled her hair.

“What are you flippin’ out for dummy?”

“Oh, um Kyo! You’re here too? Well she asked if we were going out and I said no.” Yuki smiled at her and Kyo’s heart skipped a beat. There was no way he could ever tell Yuki the real reason he wanted to stop fighting with him. He stared at Yuki as he laughed at a blushing Tohru and figured sadly that the Yuki he had fallen in love with was probably in love with Tohru.

“Honda-san, don’t worry about trivial things. Kyo brought you some rice balls if you’re hungry.” Kyo snapped out of his depressing reverie as Tohru turned to him.

“Oh Kyo thank you! You’re so kind to me!” Tohru started to cry.

“Hey! It’s just rice balls! Nothing to frickin cry over geez. Let’s go home.” Tohru sniffed and nodded.

“Okay.” They walked her home in the usual formation, with Tohru on the inside and Kyo and Yuki on the outsides, holding her hand. Kyo went up to the roof after everyone else went to bed and sat there gazing at the stars.

“My dreams have always been out of reach. How should I expect anything different from Yuki?” Kyo placed his arm behind his head and reached out to try to touch the stars. Little did he know that Yuki had his window open and had heard every word he said.
