Chapter 1
Five years have passed since the beginning of Project Exemplar. There are now ten pokemorphs in existence, with five more on the way.
After the first generation was born, the pokemon were chosen by Giovanni himself, to ensure diversity in types. A couple years ago he chose a Hypno, a Floatzel, an Electrike, a Swellow, and an Ariados.
These pokemorphs were already 2 years old by now, while the first generation was already 4 and had begun training a year ago.
Another set of pokemon were chosen six months ago by Giovanni, and their offspring were well on their way of entering the outside world. Actually, it would be any day now. This generation of pokemorphs were the children of a Dratini, a Lairon, a Shiftry, a Misdreavus, and a Flareon who had mated with the five female grunts who were chosen to bear this generation.
A WEEK LATER
The first couple of pokemorphs from the third generation had already been born, and the delivery room was busy once again with another birth. They had already suspected this one to be slightly different when they had performed sonograms on the fetuses, but they didn’t know what to expect. It seemed to be healthy regardless, so the option of abortion did not go into effect.
The mother had been sedated and had been given the necessary chemicals to get through the birth, so they were ready to begin the procedure.
As soon as they had made the initial cut and could see the infant, they could immediately see that this pokemorph was different. The infant, a female Eevee pokemorph, was covered entirely in a light brown fur and even had a small muzzle. If you didn’t know better, you would mistake her as a regular Eevee. The main difference were her large eyes and her hands, although her feet were paw-like. She also had a tail that spanned almost half of her body’s length.
There was also one more alarming thing about this newborn. She was moving around and making a fuss all right, but she did not make a sound while doing so. This fact alone proved that she had been born a mute, who would never be able to talk. Sure it would be better than being blind or deaf, but it was still a devastating realization.
The doctors and scientists looked at one another for some time, debating on what they should do in this situation. Surely this little one would be different than the rest of her ‘siblings’, but she could still potentially have some use.
As the head nurse cleaned the blood and bodily fluids off of the infant, Giovanni burst through the doors with his Persian at his side. He was contacted as soon as the problem presented itself, and the rest did not want to make a decision without their leader, as the result could be damaging to their careers and lives.
“What is going on here?” Giovanni inquired. “I came over as soon as I got word of a flaw in this precious project.”
A man in a long white lab coat stepped toward him. In fact, this was the same person who initially explained all of the details to his boss in the first place. “Sir, it seems that this newborn has been born different than all of the others. She seems to have inherited more pokemon DNA than normal. There is also the fact that she has been born a mute. These facts combined are very alarming and might pose a problem in the overall design of Project Exemplar.”
“I see. This certainly poses a problem. Has it been born healthy?”
“Yes Sir. It seems that she has no health problems, other than the previously stated issues.”
“If it is healthy, then it can still prove some use. This is what needs to be done. A replacement will be conceived immediately with the accelerated pregnancy stimulant. The next female grunt on the list will start mating today with the Golem in my collection. As you know, with this injection she will give birth in only 3 months time. Make all the necessary preparations for it immediately. As for the mute, raise it with the rest of them until they can walk and are ready for physical training. I do not want to waist resources on it after that point, so do whatever you want with it. Make it clean or carry objects for all I care. As long as it has some use, it doesn’t matter.”
“Yes Sir. We will get the preparations for the replacement started right away. Will, the caregiver for this generation, will see to the setback. I will personally make sure that it won’t get in the way of the others’ progress.” The scientist said with a stern expression. “I care too much for this project for this to jeopardize it in the least.”
Giovanni’s expression seemed to calm a bit at that. “Good, and this is why I put you in charge. As usual, keep up the weekly updates. If that is all, I will take my leave.”
At that, Giovanni made his way out of the room, followed at his heels by his loyal and trusted Persian.
TWO YEARS LATER
Preparations were being completed to start the new generation’s physical training, as the last one to walk took his first steps a few days ago. Some still liked to crawl around out of shear habit, but they were immediately picked up and placed on their feet again to discourage it.
There was one that had no problem getting over that habit, as she never had to crawl in the first place. Ever since she was a few months old, she was easily able to get around by walking on all fours, since her anatomy was a bit different. Even though she had no problem getting about like that, she still felt compelled to learn to walk on two feet like the rest of her peers. The ability to walk on all fours only fueled the resentment toward her by the people around her, despite her making the effort to learn how to walk on two legs.
Right after she was born, the little Eevee pokemorph was given a name like the rest of the other pokemorphs. Rei was chosen for her, because the meaning of it is zero, symbolizing her worth in their eyes. It was always a constant reminder to her of how much everyone loathed her because of her differences.
Today was the day the third generation received their automatic collars… everyone but Rei. It was deemed a waste of material and technology to use it on her. In Rei’s point of view, the lack of a collar was just another thing that separated her from everyone else, and she secreted wanted one. It would be years later that she would realize that not having one gave her a certain freedom as well, since they wouldn’t be able to pinpoint her exact location at any given time.
She had been teased all day because of this, as this just provided another reason for her to be ridiculed in the eyes of her five peers. She has even stepped up to receive a collar with everyone else, but she ended up just getting kicked in the side for it.
Right now everyone was fooling around with their abilities, with random elements flying about the room. Rei was just sitting quietly in the corner watching the others, as she couldn’t do much, being a normal type. She was used to just being part of the background, and she preferred it like that most of the time. She was a bit smaller than everyone else, and her petite frame helped her to blend in.
Just then Will, the one in charge of the group, stepped into the room and everyone stopped what
they were doing and walked toward him. Rei knew better than to get too close, so she just stood meekly behind everyone else.
“Ok everyone, I have some news for you.” Will said enthusiastically, as one should act around toddlers. “Since you’ve gotten so big, you get to have a bigger room! You get your own beds, a desk and chair, and even a play room attached to the bedroom. Doesn’t that sound fun?” At this everyone cheered, excited for the change. Even Rei smiled, even though she knew better than to get overly excited like everyone else.
“Follow me to your new rooms now.” At that Will started heading toward the door with everyone on his heels. Just before he went through the door, he turned around and glared at Rei, whose natural reaction was to flinch. He pointed toward the door on the opposite side of the room where a woman with a white lab coat was standing. “You don’t get to go with the others. Go with that lady. She will show you where you will stay.”
Rei turned to look at the woman, who in turn glowered at Rei. “Come on, we don’t have all day. Get a move on.” She said as she started to walk through the door. Rei immediately started running after her, not wanting to upset her any further.
After walking through various hallways, Rei spotted a sign that read, “Pokemon Breeding and Raising Facilities up ahead.” She wondered why they were headed this way when the lady stopped in front of a door.
“This is where you’ll be staying. You don’t deserve a nice room like everyone else, and this
seems like an appropriate place.” At that she opened the door and shoved Rei in before the little pokemorph could protest, closing and locking the door behind her. “Someone will get you if we need anything done, so don’t get too comfortable.”
Rei could hear footsteps fading afterwards. When they could no longer be heard, even with her heightened sense of hearing, she started to look around and take in her surroundings. What surprised her was multiple pairs of eyes all staring in her direction.
