Dawn came slowly over the hills and lit up the gloom from twilight. Kougaiji pulled the pillow over his head and groaned. He had stayed up too late last night planning and planning. Plugging up holes, thinking of anything he could do to a) not get caught and b) fuck up that bitch who called herself his Mother. Like hell she was. And he was going to do anything and everything he could to let her know that. The covers were warm, sleep hovered about his head like mist and he was just about ready to sink back into that welcoming blackness.
That is, until…
“BROTHER! GET UP GET UP GET UP GET UP!” Lirin jumped onto the bed and bounced it several times. Which knocked Kougaiji out of the bed in a heap. He cursed as he fought his way out of his blankets and glared up at his younger sister.
“Lirin,” he growled, “How many times do I have to ask you to NOT do that!?” he asked. Piss as hell, but not wanting to take it out on her. Not really. She was still young. Though, at two hundred years old. Shouldn’t she know better by now?
“Kougaiji, let’s go visit Sanzou!” she suggested happily. Apparently she was bored.
“Why do you want to see him?” Kougaiji levered himself back and onto the bed.
Lirin shrugged; “I don’t see what you see, not really. You were really nice and gentle with him the other night,”
Kougaiji stretched and yawned. He did want to see Sanzou again. But he had a full day planned. He wouldn’t be able to see Sanzou for another few days but that didn’t mean that Lirin couldn’t bother him. After all, if Sanzou was going to live in Houtou Castle with them - he’d have to put up with her any way.
“I have an idea, since I can’t see him right now, why don’t you give him something for me. But, you can’t let him see it before you put it on him,” giving Lirin a grin he went over to a cabinet on the other side of the room, which held robes and clothing that were all Sanzou’s size. From the top shelf he brought down a blue velvet box. From it, he drew forth a copper band.
“What is that?” Lirin asked excitedly. Kougaiji grinned.
“This is to help me know what is going on with Sanzou. If he’s in trouble or my order’s are being disobeyed,” he explained.
“Will you punish him like you punish me when I don’t do what you want?” Lirin asked.
“Send you to your room?” Kougaiji asked, then shook his head, “More like chain him to the wall,” he snorted. He had the chains ready, just in case. He didn’t think he’d have an easy time with the Monk, at all.
Lirin thought about it for a moment, her love for her older brother dismissing any objection she had to the plan. She held out her hand for the trinket. Kougaiji put it into a silk blue bag before handing it to Lirin. She grinned and hugged him.
“All right, please take Dokugakuji and do as he say’s,” Kougaiji rubbed her hair for a moment. She nodded and bound out of the room, calling for the family body guard and adopted-brother. Sighing, Kougaiji piled the blankets back onto the bed the way he liked them, cuddled down, and was swiftly dreaming about a blond moaning underneath him.

Sanzou had the beginnings of a headache. Goku was whining about waiting for Breakfast. Sanzou knew that Hakkai would be pissed if they started without him and Gojyo. And Gojyo was probably too drunk to stand still, and smelt like some whore or another he had picked up. And he wanted to Mate with him, the Great Genjo Sanzou? Oh, hell no. Not gonna happen. He refused. Which meant, if he said anything, that Hakkai would move in. Which didn’t bode well at all…no. He was scared of the green eyed, human-turned-demon. He honestly, really was. Those mystery smiles sent chills down his spine that were hard to ignore. And he felt total terror when Hakkai turned them on him. As if whatever had happened, or hadn’t happened was his fault.
“Good morning!” speaking of Green eyed things. Hakkai gave them a wave as he sat down besides Sanzou. Gojyo right behind him and, surprisingly, NOT smelling like he had fucked someone, or several, some ones in a dark alley way. Sanzou wondered if Gojyo and Hakkai had something going on…but dismissed it. Who’d want to bed that halfwit any way?
“Hakkai! Can we eat now? Sanzou always insists on waiting for you guys! I seriously am starving here!” Goku wailed. Sanzou cringed, his headache blaring. He was going to kill the little shit at this rate. He was sure of it.
“Mornin’ Princess,” Gojyo leered at him. Sanzou’s hand twitched towards his gun, stashed in his sleeve. All he had to do was carefully wiggle it out of its place and… *bang* …it’s a bullet between two garnet eyes. It would be so simple, so…good. It would take care of all of his problems. Hakkai’s hand on his wrist the set, still, on the table, stopped the action. Even as he thought about it. He glared at Hakkai and yanked his hand away from the touch. Hakkai smiled, and turned to give his order to the waitress. The touch was supposed to remind him of their breakfast. Nothing…possessive, as he had assumed it to be.
He ordered coffee and rice. Nothing more. He didn’t want to eat, it wasn’t going to happen. He ignored the looks the other three demons gave him, as if they had the right to tell him what to do. Like hell. Why was it that NOW, of all times, he had a problem with THIS shit?
“Are we leaving after breakfast?” Hakkai asked. Trying to make conversation.
“Yes,” Sanzou lit up a cigarette. Usually he’d just drink coffee and smoke the breakfast time away, but, the rice was just to mollify, yet, let them know that he wasn’t submitting. He did need them to be on his side, after all. Well, as much as they ever would, which wasn’t much. He doubted Goku would protect him any longer. The boy was growing up and would want to go off on his own, soon, no doubt. And he couldn’t stop that.
He wondered why that thought even saddened him, the little, that it did. He told those thoughts to fuck off. That he didn’t care what Goku did. If he stayed or left, the stupid monkey had best figure it out.
“We should make good time. I’ve all ready got our path all mapped out,” Hakkai was saying.
“Hey! That’s my cucumber roll you stupid monkey! Give it back!”
“Oh? Any towns on the way or should we stalk up on food?” Sanzou asked. He didn’t keep track on what was eaten.
“No, not for a few days. We should go shopping before we leave. We’ll have to camp out any way,” Hakkai replied.
“Stupid Kappa! Don’t eat off my plate! Ewww! You drooled all over!”
“Touch shit, kiddo!”
Sanzou tried to ignore the idiots. He really didn’t want to deal with their shit right now.
“We’ll have bad weather,” Sanzou replied.
“Maybe we should get an extra tarp, to keep the rain off,” was Hakkai’s helpful suggestion.
“If you or that cucumber shitting kappa touches me you will die a very painful death and I’ll leave your carcasses to rot by the side of the road,” Sanzou lit up his third cigarette. He made a mental note to buy enough to last him a couple of months.
“Oh Sanzou, you are so witty,” Hakkai chuckled as if the threat was actually a joke.
“Sanzou! Tell Gojyo to stop drooling all over the food!”
“Sanzou! You damned monkey! Can’t you do anything without complaining to the Monk?” Gojyo challenged.
“Whatever, you can’t go one minute without dreaming about humping him!”
Two shots rang and the dinning room fell silent as other patrons glanced their way, or out right glared.
“One more word, I dare you!” Sanzou growled. Gojyo smirked and sat back in his chair. He lit up a hi-light; “Like I am scared of you, Sanzou, my love,”
“Gojyo, must you really humiliate him in public?” Hakkai asked, it wasn’t gentle. His tone said it all but Gojyo just sneered.
“Like you haven’t thought of taking that gun away and beating his ass,”
“I have, but that doesn’t mean that we have to treat him like our Mate when he isn’t,” Hakkai crossed his arms. His smile was gone, and for once, Gojyo wondered if Hakkai was going to chi blast him all over the wall behind them.
“Fine, I’ll be careful of humiliating our precious monk,”
“Thank you,” Hakkai nodded. He turned to Sanzou to find that the Monk and his pet were walking away from the table. The monk’s shoulders were tight with blazing anger. He sighed.
“You shouldn’t have said all that,”
“I was just teasing, how was I supposed to know he’d take it personally? A bit of bondage never hurt anyone,” Gojyo shrugged.
“Let’s go, Sanzou may do something stupid without us watching his back. Goku just does what he say’s. He hasn’t gotten it into his head that sometimes you have to disobey if some one is going to die,” Hakkai stood. The breakfast, they found, was all ready paid for and they rushed out to catch up with Sanzou and Goku.
- - -
Lirin and Dokugakuji left their flying dragons outside the small hamlet where they found the group. Sanzou seething, Goku not talking for once. Hakkai and Gojyo acted as if nothing happened and Lirin thought that some how, they had said or done something to the Monk to make him un-happy. Knowing her brother, he wouldn’t like that at all. So she ran up to Gojyo, and before he could say anything, she punched him in the gut. Making him double over in pain.
“Lirin!” Goku called out, confused, but happy at the same time because Sanzou had that smirk.
“You are not allowed to make Brother Sanzou mad, stupid!” she told Gojyo. Her hands on her hips and for all the world acting like the female version of Kougaiji. Dokugakuji silently arrived. He stood behind Sanzou. The priest shook his head and turned to be on his way, but Dokugakuji stopped him. Sanzou hadn’t been paying attention and as he bumped into the muscle bound demon, he stumbled back a few. Hakkai caught an arm just in case he fell.
“What the hell…?” Sanzou glared at Dokugakuji.
“We are here to make sure you are doing as your told,” Dokugakuji replied matter of factly. A smirk played on his lips.
“I’m fine, you can go away and take the brat with you. I all ready have to deal with one animal. I don’t need a second,” Sanzou growled back. He lit a cigarette. To calm his racing nerves. He would be smoking a lot more, he knew, because of their camping out and…Gojyo would be pulling shit on him again. Hakkai’s supportive hand became a clamp. He didn’t like what Dokugakuji had said. Apparently.
“Hey! I forgot!” Lirin jumped away from a cursing Gojyo and suddenly stood in front of Sanzou.
“Kou gave me something for you, hold out your hand!” she directed. Sanzou glared down at her.
“By law, you have to do as she say’s. She is Lord Kougaiji’s younger sister,” Dokugakuji supplied with a large smirk. He was enjoying this, the shit. Sanzou promised himself that he’d shoot the bastard as soon as he could figure out a way to make death stick to him.
“Fine, here,” Sanzou just wanted them to go away. He held out his free hand. Hakkai still hanging onto the other one. Lirin clipped something around his wrist. It was gold with three stones. One yellow, one green and one red. The whole thing was made out of bronze. It lit up for a moment, nearly blinding him, then settled. A solid, un-moveable weight on his wrist above the black gloves. He knew what it was. And wasn’t happy.
This was an out right challenge to Hakkai and Gojyo. The bracelet, while letting Kougaiji know if Sanzou was in trouble, hurt, or doing something he wasn’t supposed to - but it would disappear if either of them was able to break the spell. Which, knowing that Kougaiji would use the best and most secret magic, wouldn’t be easy and near impossible to break. It could be done. But not easily.
“Well, that was all we were here for,” Lirin spun away. Dokugakuji right behind her. They disappeared into the crowd. Hakkai was swearing now, not happy about these turn of events. Sanzou raised the cigarette to his lips, a sudden zap from his wrist to his brain had him dropping it with a slight cry of pain and surprise.
“Sanzou, what is it?” Goku asked, poking at the thing. He glared as well. It had hurt Sanzou, he was sure of it.
“It’s a controlling device,” Sanzou replied.
“Oh,” Goku nodded, that was all he needed.
“Let’s go,” Sanzou muttered. Well, on the bright side, he’d save money not buying a shit load of cigarettes.
- - -
The parchment by his side lit up. He looked over briefly to see the first rule that his Mate had broken. He sighed, smoking was a bad habit and he wasn’t going to deal with it. He looked over at Andras, the demon had also been distracted. He sat back in his chair and gave Kougaiji a grin.
“Taking control are you?”
“How else am I supposed to let my challenge be known?”
“Of course,” Andras nodded, “What do you think of this plan? The other Lords will, of course, follow your lead. They did not like it when your Father went on a human-eating rampage. They were the ones that complained to the Gods to take care of it. He needs to stay where he is,”
“I understand, I think this will work. That bitch has no choice but to do as we say,” Kougaiji sat back in his chair and glanced over at the parchment. He hoped Sanzou knew what was good for him.
“Lets do it as soon as possible. You also have a wedding to plan, an heir to provide and a Mate to submit to you,” Andras yawned.
“Tomorrow, then,” Kougaiji nodded at his councilor.
- - -
Sanzou was shaking, an hour, into their drive. He needed a smoke. Badly, but it hurt. The zapping wouldn’t stop till he dropped the cigarette. He had gotten through one smoke, that way, all ready. And it wasn’t pleasant. At all. Goku watched him from behind, not happy that Sanzou was submitting to the pain just to make a point. Didn’t it mean anything that it hurt? That he should stop doing it? Goku knew that he didn’t stop his whining when Sanzou told him too and then he got whacked with the fan for it. It hurt, for a second. But he could tell that the bracelet hurt Sanzou more than the fan.
Hakkai was glaring at the road. He was pissed. Not at Sanzou, not at Gojyo or Goku, but at Kougaiji. This wasn’t how mating challenges were supposed to go. Goku knew that much. Gojyo wasn’t happy either, he and Hakkai would do something about it. Goku knew. But, why should they get to be the heroes when he stayed by Sanzou’s side every waking moment that he could? He should be that one to take the stupid bracelet off.
Sanzou took another drag of the cigarette. He blinked away the pain. Blew out the smoke. Went to do it again when Hakkai’s hand struck out, and crushed the cigarette and fingers.
“Stop. You are in enough pain,” He didn’t turn his eyes away from the road. Suddenly, knowing hands searched his robes and sleeves. Sanzou thrashed and tried to bring his arm out of Hakkai’s grip. The Jeep stopped, not sudden enough to throw them all out, but enough that Sanzou was pushed forward. A hand on his neck held him there. Immobile.
“What are you doing? Don’t hurt him!” Goku cried.
“We won’t stand for this, do as we say Goku. That’s helping and caring for Sanzou the way you want,” Gojyo muttered, he found Sanzou’s smokes. Crushed them in one hand. Hakkai held both of Sanzou’s bony wrists even as the Monk struggled against them.
“I swear I’ll kill both you bastards!” Sanzou snarled. The bracelet, much to their surprise, doubled and encircled the other wrist. Joined at the middle, the metal didn’t budge. The magic made it unbreakable by human standards.
“Damn it,” Sanzou cursed. Hakkai pulled back.
“Why did it do that?” Goku asked.
“I think it wanted Sanzou immobile like us,” Gojyo replied.
“As long as it keeps him from smoking, I don’t care,” Hakkai muttered.
“I’ll kill all of you,” Sanzou promised. This time it was Hakkai that went questing. The sutra rolled up and put into the safe keeping of Goku, who held it as if his life depended on it. The woven chest plate removed and his robes pushed off his shoulders. It didn’t take long for Hakkai to find his gun and fan.
“I think that we’ll keep these for now, we’re strong enough to not need you in a battle,” Hakkai smiled.
“Oh, so you’ve been humoring me this entire time?” Sanzou growled.
“Yes,” was the chuckled reply. Gojyo hauled Sanzou from the front seat and dumped him into the back. He wrapped soft ropes around thin ankles. A shorter piece around knees.
“There, Goku, make sure he doesn’t hurt himself,” Gojyo ordered the Monkey. Goku stowed the sutra and chest plate in Sanzou’s small travel pack, which didn’t have a lot in it. He found the velvet bag that fit the sutra like a glove. Then he pulled Sanzou’s head and shoulders into his lap and started carting his fingers through sun golden hair. Sanzou shook his head.
“Don’t,” he practically ordered. Goku stopped for a moment, but with the knowing looks coming from the front. Gojyo openly watching them. Goku continued the soft touch.
“I want to touch you, I want to care for you. If this is the way I can do it…then…that’s fine by me,” he grinned, “You can’t hurt me or yourself, that’s a good thing,”
“Way to go Monkey!”
“Stop encouraging him,” Sanzou glared at the red-headed kappa.
“You are in no position to tell us what to do, my darling,” Gojyo outwardly smirked.
“We’re going to get the bracelet off you, and then we’re going to claim you as our Mate. Gojyo and I have all ready decided that we can both share, make it a threesome,” Hakkai smiled. Sanzou could hear it in his tone.
“Don’t any of you care what I want?” Sanzou asked.
“But you don’t know what you want,” Goku pointed out.
“And how the hell do you know that?” Sanzou blinked. Goku shrugged and continued to pet him.
“I just do, it’s kinda like when we call each other through our bond,” Goku replied, he had to think it over a long time before he did, though.
“Ah, that makes sense,” Hakkai nodded.
“I’m going to kill all of you when I am free. I will be no one’s Mate. I won’t submit to any one!” the helpless blond struggled in his bonds. Goku held Sanzou down till his struggles subsided and he was gasping for air. Hakkai had started up the jeep and they were well on their way.
“It’s all right, Sanzou, I won’t let you get hurt,” Goku whispered. He kissed Sanzou lightly on the cheek before he softly closed dark, violet eyes; “Go to sleep, you need it,”
Sanzou seethed inside and snapped at fingers that strayed too close to his lips; “Gag him, Goku,” Hakkai ordered. Still pissed that Sanzou had subjected himself to the pain just for a smoke. Goku looked around, wasn’t sure what to use but not willing to make Hakkai any more angry than he all ready was. So, he unknotted Sanzou’s belt and wound it several times around jaw and lips. Sanzou shook his head to try and deter Goku’s efforts, but a slight pull of blond hair made him still for the moment Goku needed to knot it tightly at the back of his neck.
“Thank you,” Hakkai now smiled, though coldly, at Goku.
“You’re welcome…?”
Sanzou mumbled something, but it was lost as soon all were ignoring him. Goku had even moved away, intent on a conversation with Gojyo. Rejected, all he could do was stare at the robin blue sky and wonder how the hell he had let this go so far without intervention.
- - -
He was left in the jeep as the others unloaded the gear and made camp. Goku was setting up the tent, Hakkai starting a fire and making dinner. When Gojyo had their packs near by Hakkai so that he could easily reach the utensils he would need for dinner. The Kappa finally lifted Sanzou out of the bed of the Jeep. Sanzou didn’t fight as he was lifted bridal style. Just to be deposited near the fire. He was cold. His robes were not thick enough for the on coming winter. He leant near the fire. Resting his forearms on his thighs and knees.
“Hakkai! When can we eat?” Goku asked loudly. The tent was all set up and Sanzou could see four bags rolled out and ready for them to climb into it. Goku sat near him on a log, slightly above Sanzou. He reached out a hand to touch him, but as a shake of the head from Hakkai - Goku pulled back. He gave Sanzou an apologetic look. Sanzou ignored it. He was being punished. He could deal with that.
In another half our. He had been banished as the others congregated on the other side of the fire.
“All right you two. I’m, going to feed Sanzou and you two get the dishes,” Hakkai smiled. He filled a bowl with the stew and rice he had made that night. Gojyo and Goku complained but did as they were told anyway. They stayed near by, boiling water for the dirty dishes so that they could watch Hakkai feed their Mate. Well, once they got rid of that stupid bracelet.
Hakkai undid the gag. The black belt fell to the ground, but Sanzou didn’t say anything.
“Oh, you’re freezing,” Hakkai pulled him nearer the fire and picked up the bowl and spoon.
“I know you’re hungry, please, I don’t want to get physical with you,” he held a small amount of the food to soft lips. Sanzou opened his mouth to take it in. Bound as he was, he had reverted to survival mode. When he was free, he was going to leave them all to rot. Mission be damned. If the Merciful Goddess wanted this done so badly, she had best take care of it herself. He wasn’t going to do it.
He squashed that voice in the back of his head which said he was running from his problems.
- - -
Blinking his eyes open. All he heard were the snores from Goku and Gojyo. Dawn showed its beautiful face over the eastern horizon, he face westward. The fire was dangerously low to going out. Hakkai and Hakuryuu were sleeping peacefully and he was free of any binding arms to keep him in place. Sanzou wasn’t sure, however, if he could make a break for it this morning. He felt groggy, as if something had been fed to him to make him sleep. Thinking about it hurt his brain and all his body wanted to do was sink back into the blackness that hedge his conscious.
He pushed it away, stronger than the weakness. Blinking light violet eyes, he stared at the bronze cuffs that held his wrists tightly. He began to will it, as if he could make the cuffs disappear and escape in the next few seconds. The bronze began to shimmer and in mere seconds, his hands were free. Wasting no time, but trying to be as quiet as he could. Sanzou freed himself found his things - except the gun, but that couldn’t be helped - and made his way into the woods. He would find a temple to take a rest and a long look at his life.
Something needed a good revaluation and he needed to get the damned bracelet off as well.
- - -
Hakkai woke late. He knew this by the position of the sun. Yawning, he rolled over onto his back. Hakuryuu made a noise as his warmth was taken away. It was too cold to not be snuggling. Hakkai opened the sleeping bag and Hakuryuu crawled in. Looking over his companions, Hakkai did an automatic head count. However, two were present and one - blond no less- wasn’t.
“Damn,” he cursed. He got to his feet and shook Gojyo awake.
“Huh…?” not a morning person, ever, Gojyo woke slowly.
“Sanzou’s gone,”
That woke Goku.
