Chapter Two: Draw
Chapter Two: Draw
Too late. Rem waited too late to write L's name in the Death Note.
Light had walked away from the detective to look with the others for the Shinigami; he knew was no longer alive. She had saved Misa by getting rid of the person that would make the connection for L to execute her.
He had to find the notebook before the others got to it.
The pile of dust was enough to give away the Shinigami had been there. Light crouched down and reached his fingers out to the Death Note that lay in the center amongst the ash.
"Ratio-kun…?" Light's fingers froze before clasping them around the notebook.
"I found the notebook Ryuzaki," He said as he stood and held it out to the detective.
'Dammit, he still refuses to let me out of his sight for long.' Light clinched his teeth down – a bad habit he had picked up since meeting the detective.
It was a little thing that L easily noticed, but it couldn't prove Light guilty. It was normal for people under the stress they always found themselves in.
L reached for it dulcetly – the way he always did, careful and planned as if anything could burn him.
When his grasp was on it, the notebook's corners pinched between his pointer finger and thumb, he flipped the pages one by one - finding his proof that Watari was killed by the Shinigami.
L turned as he heard the others coming down the hall. He held out the notebook to show them that they had succeeded in finding the Shinigami.
"What happened? Where's the Shinigami?" Matusda was the first to express his exasperated concern.
"It appears the Shinigami has turned to dust." He replied, indicating to the pile of dust behind him.
"Does that mean the Shinigami was responsible for all the deaths?" Soichiro Yagami asked, looking over the pile of dust.
"No, I do not believe so." L turned back to Light, "but I do believe she was trying to protect something or someone."
Light groaned as he glared at L, "Don't even bother saying it, because I had nothing to do with this Ryuzaki!"
"He's right; you can't blame him for this."
"Did I say I was going to Yagami-san?" L stated as he turned back to the others.
The anger was evident as he watched them.
The elder detective did not reply as he waited for L to explain what he thought had happened. There was no point in arguing with the stubborn man.
"It was Misa that I had accused of being Kira or at least the second Kira earlier. The Shinigami had heard me; he was right in the room. There is full evidence that Misa was acting as the second Kira. Don't you find it obvious that the Shinigami was trying to protect her?"
L shifted his gaze back to the original suspect, "Hmm, Ratio-kun?"
Light stared back in disbelief at L. If it was L's fate to live then this couldn't have worked out any better... could it? With Rem out of the way and Misa being accused, Light could easily come up with some way of winning. Misa was to loyal to rat on Light, her 'beloved' Kira.
L waited for Light to say something, but soon grew impatient with the younger man, "I understand that it is hard for you to come to terms with your 'girlfriend' being the second Kira, but you did say before that you didn't care for her in that way. This should be easy for you Ratio-kun."
"… easy for me to believe that someone I was close to is Kira…?"
"She's a murderer – must I point that out to you."
"Ryuzaki, you've got to understand that this would be hard on anyone!" Soichiro pointed out as he took a step towards the famous detective.
"Yes, you are right." L said as he sighed. He knew that from experience. He knew that because of the feelings he had when accusing Light. His goal was to get a reaction out of Light that would show that he was Kira though.
"We will have to hold Misa Amane in contempt for now."
"So you want us to arrest her!?" Aizawa asked, no longer able to keep quiet.
"Yes." L replied and turned away from the rest of the Task Force, who left to find Misa.
"Ratio-kun… this does not make me any less suspicious of you being the true Kira."
"Of course not Ryuzaki, but you can't prove it and will not be able to prove it, because I am not Kira."
"And you stating that do not make it a fact either." L turned away, his mind etched in thought. "It seems that Kira and I have a draw this round…"
