Rido's Decision
It was well into the night. The
Kuran mansion was bustling with maids and butlers, as was per usual.
After quietly slipping into the house with the boy, Rido Kuran had
sat at the desk in his master bedroom. He would have someone look at
the boy after he regained his composure. He had acted impulsively and
wasn't ready to face the reality of his actions, at least not yet.
Deep brown-red eyes peered over
his shoulder, falling on the small body laying peacefully across the
room. On the king sized bed was the young boy, his silver hair
splayed on a black silk pillow. Those beautiful amethyst eyes were
hidden from the world while he slept. With the series of events that
happened several hours before, Rido had to compel the child to sleep
while he carried him home. Oh, the temptation that heroic act
created. He was practically digging his own grave.
Tearing his eyes from the
sleeping boy, he sighed. Picking up a pen, Rido placed the tip to the
top of the blank page in an old book and began writing.
May of Year 2010
It is not often I have an urge
to document the happenings of my days in this old leather journal.
The dust between the pages should be evidence enough. However, I have
made an exception. A precious pearl has fallen into my hands, and I
plan to cherish this pearl with love and care.
I have taken a young male
child into my home. I know nothing about his past, not even his name.
I don't expect to learn much from him anytime soon either. Ah, but
that could be expected from a human child who just witnessed his twin
brother's death.
How I happened across such a
magnificent beauty was pure coincidence. Rebel scum killed his mother
and brother. He would have been tortured had I not stepped in. But
our introduction will come later, for now he sleeps soundly upon my
bed. A picture of pure innocence; if one was lucky enough to catch a
glimpse of his sleeping face.
Something in the boy's
amethyst eyes reminded me of myself when I had lost my beloved Sara,
may she rest peacefully. That feeling of emptiness... Ah, but that
was so long ago. With this human boy, I will sculpt him to learn our
ways. He will become my masterpiece in the making. He will not leave
my side. Senri and Kaname will treat him gently, as if he was one of
our own. He will be a gem; untouchable, and feeding from him will be
prohibited, unless I deem differently.
This silver haired angel is
mine.
R. Kuran
Placing his pen back in its
holder, Rido closed the book and placed it in his desk drawer. He
wondered if taking the boy into his home and under his wing was a
smart move on his part? So many scenarios were going through his
head. A human child living among three purebloods and surrounded by
dozens of middle class vampires. There were so many things that could
go wrong...
The pureblood ran his fingers
through his shoulder length raven hair, raking the strands out of his
face, and leaned back in his leather swivel chair. What had he gotten
himself into? Rido sighed and rose from his seat. While he was just
sitting around, he might as well do something useful.
Opening the door of his room, he
called to a passing maid.
“I
need a bowl of warm water and small towels sent to my room,”
Rido made sure to keep his voice soft, not wanting to chance waking
the boy just yet.
“Hai,
do you require anything else, Kuran-sama?” The maid bowed and
kept her amber eyes downcast. Her voice was sweet and quiet, just
above a whisper.
Rido sighed for the second time.
Would he need anything else? He supposed that the child might be
hungry, and maybe even thirsty... but he would worry about that once
the boy was awake.
“No,
that should be all for the time being. You are dismissed.” Rido
was slowing becoming very irritable, it was evident in his strained
voice. The young maid just nodded and bowed deeply. Rido retreated
into his room and closed the door quietly. “Ah, a staff meeting
is in order. I can't sneak around for the life of me. It's too much
work,” Rido scratched the back of his neck, chuckling at how
childish he was acting; he had really just smuggled a human into his
own house.
Just as he was about to sit down
next to the sleeping youth, there was a sharp rapt on the door. Rido
reached out with his senses and identified the visitor. It just
happened to be Kaname. Well, I guess he would be finding out
sooner rather than later about the 'stray' I brought home, Rido
thought as he opened the door.
Before Rido could address his
nephew, Kaname bowed slightly and pushed a metal cart, stocked with a
water bin and towels, into his room. Rido turned and watched as
Kaname waltzed into the room, looking around curiously. He was bound
to notice the boy... so Rido just waited.
“Oji-san,
here is the-” The young pureblood's eyes widened, his body
anchoring itself where he stood. Kaname wasn't sure if he was really
seeing the child on his uncle's bed, or not. Rido walked passed his
nephew and took a seat on the bed next to the boy. The interest and
curiosity flashing across Kaname's face intrigued Rido. Oh,
this was going to be interesting...
“Thank
you, Kaname. Could you bring that here, please.” Rido's voice
brought Kaname out of his stunned state, but questions still ran
rampant through his head. He wheeled the cart closer to Rido, his
eyes still glued to the sleeping silverette.
Something about the boy drew
Kaname closer. Stepping away from the cart, he leaned in close to
sniff the child, not thinking much of his actions.
As Rido watched his nephew near
the boy's neck, he felt his heartbeat increase. Everything seemed to
happen in slow motion. A low growl unconsciously rumbled through his
chest, warning Kaname that he was getting too close for his liking.
For a second, Kaname wondered why his uncle had gotten so protective.
But the warning did not go unheard. Kaname quickly straightened,
although not with out catching a whiff of the boy's natural scent.
Rido's senses were heightened and his reflexes ready.
When Kaname's eyes flashed a
bright crimson for a split second, Rido was standing between his
nephew and the sleeping child, an audible growl escaping his lips as
he slightly bared his fangs. His body hunched in a defensive
position, ready for an attack. There was no way Rido was taking
chances. Even his thirteen year old nephew was no exception.
When the bloodlust vanished from
Kaname's eyes, Rido relaxed a little and watched as his nephew's
brows knit together in question. Rido couldn't explain why he was
feeling so protective of the human child.
“Oji-san...?
Why is there a human
child
in your bed?” Kaname didn't know how to react to his uncle's
behavior, but he wanted answers. He had never seen the elder
pureblood act so protective over someone, let alone a human. Kaname
could only wonder, what
does Oji-san plan to do with that child?
Rido raised a single brow. Kaname
had questioned him, something he had never done before. He sighed,
willing himself to relax. Placing on hand on his hip, the other
combed his hair back.
“His
mother and twin brother were killed right in front of him. He would
have met the same fate had I not intervened.”
Rido explained what had happened.
As he did, he sat on the edge of the bed and grabbed a cloth to wash
the dry tears from the boy's cheeks. Kaname had seated himself at the
foot of the huge bed, keeping his distance so his uncle wouldn't go
into 'protector' mode again. As he listened, Kaname watched his uncle
gently clean the boy. Kaname was awestruck at the absolute tenderness
his uncle used as he removed the dirt from the boy's pale skin. The
gleam in Rido's eyes was questionable in a way Kaname didn't quite
understand at his young age. It just didn't seem natural...
When Rido had finished, he
dropped the cloth into the basin and covered the child with the
sheets. For a moment Rido hesitated, then he bent forward and placed
a gentle kiss on the silverette's forehead. Patting the boy's hair,
Rido turned to Kaname, the soft features of affection replaced by
seriousness. The action took Kaname by surprise, and in the pit of
his stomach, he felt uneasy. It was like his uncle was a completely
different person.
Rido crossed his arms over his
chest and addressed his nephew. “I have made the decision to
look after the boy, Kaname. He will be under my supervision, but I
expect you and Shiki to take him under your wing as well,” Rido
had paused. Would he really want the silverette to be away from his
side?
Something akin to jealousy seeped
into his veins, sending Rido's thoughts spiraling off track for a
moment. It took only a second to realize that he had veered from his
conversation. He tried to pick up from where he left off...
“But
first things first, the staff will need to be informed as soon as
possible. Could you and Shiki tell them there will be a meeting in
ten minutes?” Rido looked from his nephew to the sleeping boy.
He didn't know when the child would wake up, so the sooner his staff
was aware of the situation, the quicker he could get back to
monitoring the boy.
Kaname couldn't disobey his
uncle, so he had no other choice but to do as he was asked. It was
the least he could do since Rido took him in after his parent's
death. As much as he wanted to question his uncle's motives, he just
...couldn't.
“I
will abide by your decision, Oji-san. I'll have the staff gather in
the common room immediately,” Rising from the bed, Kaname bowed
and wheeled out the cart as he went to find Shiki. He debated on
letting his cousin know what his father was up to, but couldn't find
a way to explain it. His uncle was acting differently. Not only had
he taken in a human child like he was a stray dog, but he was showing
an abnormal amount of affection towards said human.
All Kaname could do was honor his
uncle's wishes until he understood just what exactly was going on.

A/N: For
some reason this chapter was a little -blah-. Rido might be a little
hard to understand, and that was on purpose. Lets just say he isn't
thinking things through (scatterbrained?). And Zero's age will be
revealed in the next chapter (hopefully). So... let me know what you
think!
