Chapter One
By ArcadiaEclipse
In retrospect, perhaps it would have been wiser to deny the young mother her freedom in exchange for the safe release of her female offspring. Ludwig knew not the first thing about raising an infant, and the uncertainty of what to do next did weigh rather heavily on the vampire even with all his remarkable powers honed carefully over the years. He hardly considered his dark minions as children although their mindless need to feed almost constantly could certainly be likened to a newborn babe. They were creatures born of darkness, however, not being brought to life by a sexual act with the subsequent exchange of fluids. Had this rather unexpected turn of events not have befallen him so suddenly Ludwig would never have thought that he might be able to bear his own true offspring one day.
True vampires, those that possessed power and intelligence beyond the limited range of his blood-driven minions, could only be born of intercourse between a vampire and its blood doll mate. The near extinction of his kind now spoke volumes as to the lack of vampire-blood doll relations. After all, it was difficult to breed with a species that almost seemed to have disappeared from the planet some seventy years earlier. Ludwig suspected that greed and the unwillingness of vampires to permit their blood doll mates to breed with others of their own kind was the likely cause of so few of the precious creatures gifted with limitless blood supplies being born now. Blood dolls could, after all, only be conceived of a mating between two of their own species.
There were only two beings on this wretched excuse for a planet that he trusted with the considerable task of raising the orphan in his arms, and even without speaking a word as he entered their midst Ludwig knew precisely what they would say to his request. Neither his brother Vash nor the Austrian-born vampire disappointed either.
“There is no way in Hell that I am playing mommy to a little human bastard, Ludwig. Go fuck yourself.”
Roderich was considerably less vocal than Ludwig’s blonde brother was, but the expression on the brunette’s face spoke volumes as to the sour disposition now emanating off of his body in nearly tangible waves. Whether facing an onslaught of glares or fluid curses Ludwig remained perfectly calm when regarding both of them in turn.
“I don’t really care which one of you mothers him, but you are far more indebted to me, Roderich. Don’t test my patience.”
“I’ve never asked you to keep me alive!” The brunette snarled menacingly but Ludwig had grown rather immune to his anger over the last century and Roderich’s tirade was easily ignored causing the young vampire to seethe all the more. “God damn it, Ludwig! If I frustrate you then just let me fade away. Why in the world are you so adamant about keeping me here when you so clearly despise me?”
“‘Despise’ is a very strong word, Roderich. I prefer to think of you as a slightly more annoying fixture of my household. Like a broken picture frame or an unleveled table perhaps.” He fully anticipated his fellow vampire’s wrath, but off to the side Vash snickered effectively earning the brunt of Roderich’s present anger. “Besides,” the eldest continued as if the fury washing off of Roderich’s body in tangible waves wasn’t obvious, “loathe though he is to admit it, your passing would sadden my brother greatly.”
“It would not!”
And yet Vash’s cheeks burned betraying at least a hint of the veracity in Ludwig’s casual admission. His words had the much-desired effect of shutting up both of his friends at least, and the tall blonde couldn’t contain the smile quirking his lips as he settled the precious infant into Roderich’s arms. An ideal model of motherhood he was not, but something about the brunette seemed far more feminine than Ludwig’s younger brother and thus deemed him the more obvious choice as caretaker. Roderich’s lips pressed into a terse, fine line betraying his annoyance with this situation but the younger vampire ultimately cradled the baby boy in his arms anyway.
“Why not just find yourself a wife, Ludwig?”
The tall vampire grinned and stroked Gilbert’s sleeping head tenderly.
“I already have. Take good care of him for me.”
“Does he have a name?”
“Gilbert. Thank you both,” he added as an afterthought.
There was no doubt in his mind that his dearest friends would very quickly become loving foster parents. Sometimes he wondered how the pair could be so adamant about their dislike for one another when anyone could plainly see that Vash only pretended to find the brunette stuck-up and obnoxious and Roderich only ever seemed willing to set his stuffy demeanor aside when alone with his best friend. Ludwig left their company to seek out precious alone time, but just outside the doorway he paused and watched Vash sit beside Roderich and draw a slender dagger from the holster above his boot.
The brunette sighed quietly.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
There never seemed to be a need for an excess of words between them. Vash drew the sharp blade over his inner wrist wringing a line of stolen blood to the surface of his flesh which was pressed now to Roderich’s lips so his friend could feed. There were things in this life that didn’t make sense to Ludwig- the brunette vampire’s refusal to harm another living creature being a prime example. Roderich had found religion nearly forty years earlier, however, and although he had come to terms with being one of the ‘damned’, the Austrian-born vampire would only take his meals now from a human or animal that had died of old age or else feeding on the blood in Vash’s veins that the blonde had himself stolen from another.
Did it make him a hypocrite? Probably, but it was not Ludwig’s place to point out such an obvious contradiction. As long as Vash wished to feed his dearest friend then Roderich would live on beside them in this shadowy realm created by the ever-mounting darkness that resided within every ounce of the blonde vampire’s being. Ultimately, it was Ludwig whose will dictated the laws that his fellow vampires and shadowy minions followed; Ludwig who determined which innocent humans lived or died after straying into this strange dimension of eternal night. The blonde was surprisingly benevolent to those persons who accepted their newfound place in this world, but eventually the temptation of sunlight slowly whittled away at the mortals’ resolve and they would always flee for the gates that marked the barrier between the real world and this realm of darkness. All of them gave into the need for daylight and nothing but a series of small stone markers littering the forest betrayed where their bodies had finally come to rest. No one ever escaped.
Ludwig sighed while gazing out over the great expanse of his realm, his sensitive ears clearly hearing Vash approach him from behind but the elder brother did not acknowledge his sibling immediately even as the smaller blonde took his place by Ludwig’s side without a word. It was at once both companionable silence but also a stand-off of sorts before the larger vampire spoke.
“Have you proposed to him, yet?”
“My business is my own. Butt out.”
A tiny, knowing smile tugged at the corner of Ludwig’s lips as the elder vampire reached out to brush his fingers lightly over his brother’s clothed chest. He could feel the hard metal of their late mother’s wedding ring still dangling from its chain around Vash’s neck. His brother kept it close to his heart even after all these years, but Ludwig had caught his brother’s eyes wandering on more than one occasion to Roderich’s fingers as if mentally gauging whether the ancient band would fit.
“I assume that’s a ‘no’.”
Vash readily dismissed the absurd idea of Roderich’s love for him, snorting louder than before and struck his brother’s intrusive hand with considerable force though whether it was driven by anger for having his personal space violated or simply embarrassment that Ludwig knew his secret was anyone’s guess. The elder vampire was fairly certain that it was the latter however, especially when Vash’s pale cheeks turned such an interesting shade of scarlet. Hopefully his brother would one day come to terms with many centuries of repressed love for his best friend.
“He loves you too, you know.”
“You’re full of shit. He’s always lecturing me and telling me what a fuckup I am.”
Vash snorted loudly but although he turned his back on Ludwig the larger blonde could clearly see his brother’s usually pale cheeks were blushing. For far too many centuries Ludwig had watched the friendship between Roderich and his brother blossom into something much more intimate even if it lacked the physical notes of a sexual relationship. They were perfect for one another, but it might be another century or more before either of them realized it. Until then he could do nothing but try to gently nudge his brother in the right direction.
“You deserve each other.”
“He deserves his own hand and nothing more. And for Chrissakes, mind your own damned business! You’re really starting to piss me off, Ludwig.”
“I am only worried for your happiness, brother. Do not mistake my love of you for ire.”
Vash snorted but any retorts he wished to vocalize were cut short by the sudden cries of their newest acquisition emanating from within the room behind them drawing his attention away from Ludwig to instead focus once more on his best friend standing in the doorframe now with the fussing infant in his arms. Had Roderich heard their conversation? His scarlet cheeks paled considerably at the rather sobering thought.
The Austrian vampire hadn’t been a mother for more than five minutes but already his hair appeared a little askew and there was something resembling spit-up on his usually immaculate coat. Ludwig almost chuckled in spite of himself but settled on biting his lip and regarding the new ‘mother’ of his future mate with a barely-contained grin.
“Yes?”
“It appears to be hungry.”
“‘It’ is a he, Roderich,” Ludwig corrected while trying to quell the small frown now tugging at the corner of his lips. Perhaps Vash would have made a more suitable mother if not for his sibling’s notorious temper and lack of patience. “Are you certain that he’s crying for food?”
“Not in the least. I suppose he could be tired or soiled his diaper.”
Vash balked at him.
“He’s an infant, Roderich! They only do like...three things! How the fuck do you haven’t got a clue what he wants?”
“I don’t spend a lot of time around babies!” The Austrian snarled back at him. “If YOU want to take care of him, Vash, be my guest!”
Bickering between the two of them was like second nature, though this time their curses and scathing remarks were diluted slightly by the mounting wails of little Gilbert still clutched in Roderich’s arms. Try as he might even Ludwig’s considerable power was no match for the splitting headache slowly mounting into a crescendo of pain causing the eldest to rub at his temples while the other two attempted to out-shout each other.
“Brother, I have need of you to guard my borders while I search for food outside of this realm.”
“I will do no such thing. Have your mindless minions do your dirty work.”
“You will,” Ludwig smirked knowingly, “if for no other reason than I am keenly aware of your inclinations, brother. I know of your darkness even if Roderich chooses to ignore that which can be neither masked nor transformed into light regardless of how diligently he prays for you soul.”
“Eloquent speech won’t change my mind.”
“Then I will say only this,” he purred silkily into Vash’s ear, all-too aware of Roderich’s light-colored eyes boring holes into the back of his head as the eldest’s lips brushed his brother’s flesh far too intimately. “You are and have forever remained my most capable, most talented soldier. I trust no other with this task. It is meant for you alone.”
Flattery always seemed to produce the desired result when dealing with the younger blonde’s tempest-like fury. By the time that Vash parted his lips to speak again Ludwig had vanished leaving his two subordinates to attempt pacifying Gilbert until such time that the infant could feed. Roderich’s awkward rocking and shushing pleas, terse and annoyed though they were, seemed to help at least a little as the child’s cries devolved into a sniffling bout of the hiccups. The brunette might not be the ideal mother figure, but he did seem to be avoiding Vash’s eyes in favor of watching Ludwig’s newest acquisition coo and wave his little hands.
“Roderich?”
Silence.
“Look, do you want to come with me or not?”
“…I will not watch you sin.”
Roderich shifted the child in his arms and turned to quickly leave his friend behind on the balcony all alone. He would have preferred to disappear and leave no trace of his whereabouts, but there was no telling what would happen to the child if he simply vanished. Luck appeared to be with him however as Vash permitted his exit without following or shouting after the other vampire to curse or demand that Roderich follow the blonde regardless of his religious beliefs and help guard the borders of this darkened realm.
No, Vash remained alone on the balcony gritting his teeth and stubbornly denying the wetness now gathering in his lashes but a familiar jolt ripped through his body quickly drawing his attention back to the task Ludwig had entrusted to him. Somewhere a mortal was making for the exit of his brother’s realm and that could not be allowed. His fangs glistened and grew unbidden forming a ferocious grin that seemed to twist his face into a scowl that was more beast than man.
“Pray for my soul, Roderich. Pray hard.”
The vampire’s body faded into an ebony mist mere seconds before mortal screams of terror and pain tore through the darkness.
