After working hard for several hours on the kira case, Light decided to take a break and have dinner at one of his favorite restaurants. He hadn’t had much time to carry out his original plans of creating a better world, but who knew how difficult it would be to replace L and take over the investigation when he was the culprit?
“I think your girl may be sad,” Ryuk said as he smiled slyly at Misa who was looking out the window at the amazing view of the water.
Her hands were placed on the table in front of her, and she sighed while staring out at the starry skies.
“Hush up Ryuk! What have I told you about speaking to me in public? People will think I’m crazy,” he snapped at the Shinigami who was floating behind him and laughed, “Oh please! It’s not like anyone’s noticing. Besides, Misa is sitting right in front of you. Who’s to say you’re not speaking to her?”
He ignored him, then picked up his glass of Saki, took a few slow sips before placing it back down, “What’s wrong?” he directed the question toward the beautiful blonde who just couldn’t seem to keep her mind off of something else.
“Oh nothing, it’s just-“ she fumbled with the charm bracelet on her left wrist and didn’t bother to finish her statement. After taking another sip of his drink he demanded impatiently, “Go on. Don’t stop in the middle of a sentence. Is it important?”
She nodded and told him, “Yes.”
“Then continue.”
“Well, it’s just,” she couldn’t look him in the eye because they were wintry and filled with deviance. No matter how intriguing he was, he was still quite daunting, but nonetheless she loved him and wouldn’t think to defy him. “I’ve been wondering once you’ve accomplished this idea of a new world, who’s going to be your goddess?”
“Pardon?”
“You know, you talk about reigning over the new world as its God, and I was wondering if you had anyone in mind to reign by your side.”
He noticed the anticipation in her voice, and although he kept a straight face, he was laughing inside. The foolish girl was still under the impression that he loved her when, in fact, he felt the exact opposite of her. Before he came along, she was a foolish model who killed innocent people for selfish reasons. In his eyes, she was no different than the criminals he’s punished with his death note. If she didn’t possess one of her own, more than likely, he would’ve written her name in it a long time ago. Instead, he decided to string her along for the ride, groom her into thinking she was of any use to him besides being manipulated into doing what he wants, and was a piece of ass.
He smiled, she noticed the twinkle in his eyes, and became excited when he told her, “Well, I already professed my love to you before. Haven’t I told you once we’ve succeeded that I was going to make you my wife?”
“Uh, yes you have.”
He closed his eyes for a moment then told her, “Good, so glad you understand.”
She sighed then picked up her fork and began eating her curry. She was relieved to hear that he still planned to marry her. It’s been more than three years since she’s started killing criminals and has stood by Light’s side as he played the successful game of cat and mouse with the investigation team. She smiled as she continued eating her meal thinking about their future together (although he’s yet to propose to her) while Ryuk laughed sinisterly.
They were oblivious to Near’s presence in the restaurant as he sat a few tables down from them. He sat across from her as her big brown eyes were diverted towards her menu and couldn’t decide what to order. She wasn’t used to eating at an upscale Japanese restaurant and would’ve preferred Chinese or Italian, but the jackass had the money, so she wasn’t going to question his taste in cuisine. Not to mention his poor attire. She couldn’t believe he would be dressed so casually in that type of restaurant and was slouching instead of sitting his ass in the chair like normal people. She wasn’t dressed in anything fancy either, so she wasn’t going to go there, but still he may have been like L but his skills were far less impressive.
He noticed the expression on her face and couldn’t help but laugh. She was so cute when she was confused and could tell (despite the fact she was fluent in seven languages including Japanese) she hadn’t a clue what she was reading.
“Need some help?” he offered.
She looked at him with a smug look on her face and told him bluntly, “Thanks, how generous of you.”
“You know, if I were you I’d be a lot nicer to me, especially since I took you out of the orphanage and gave you a chance to come to Japan to work on the kira case,” he replied matching her smug tone.
She could’ve countered him with a smart aleck remark, but was too tired after an eight hour flight and didn’t think he was worth the effort.
“Fine, I’m sorry.”
“Much better.”
She rolled her eyes then turned her attention back to her menu and sighed heavily. Nothing seemed appetizing to her, and she hadn’t eaten since earlier that morning. Her stomach growled and she groaned from embarrassment.
“Need me to order for you?” he asked generously.
She scratched the back of her neck, “I don’t know. You know I don’t trust anyone with my food.”
Not only did she have book intelligence, but she also had street smarts. Despite her ranking, she was very much a worthy successor to L and he knew it. He just chose not to tell her that because then she might grow a big head and take over the investigation he’s worked hard to put together.
“Well, I recommend the Ramen. You do like noodles don’t you?”
She sighed and told him, “Yeah, I can eat noodles.”
“Good, now to get you caught up on the kira case.”
Misa was eating her Udon with her utensils when she noticed a white haired boy wearing a slightly over sized white button down and white trousers sitting a few tables down. She paused for a moment and kept her attention on him. She noticed a girl who may have been younger than him due to her size sitting across from him with her back turned to her. She was wearing a baggy beige shirt with a black wife beater underneath and black pants, her long, flowing, dark locks were luminous, and had mahogany skin.
Light noticed the look on her face and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Um, nothing,” she turned her attention back to her food clearly embarrassed.
Ryuk continued to laugh and watched to see what would happen next. Light slightly turned around to see what was going on then noticed Near was sitting at the table accompanied with a girl he didn’t recognize.
He instantly turned back around once their eyes met and cursed under his breath, “Shit! He’s here.”
He slammed his fists on the table then placed his face in his hands and sighed. The last place he expected to see him was there, and the worst part of it was that he wasn’t alone. He didn’t know who that girl was, but he had a feeling she was working with him.
“Great,” he said more so to himself, “just what I need.”
“Shall we leave?” Misa asked.
He snapped, “Are you crazy! If we leave he’ll get suspicious even more than he already is. We just have to play it safe and pretend like he’s not here.”
She nodded then picked up her cup of tea and sipped it as Ryuk continued to laugh. The girl who was with Near was definitely a new face and since he’s yet to see it, he couldn’t see her remaining lifespan, though he could see her real name. Not that he would tell Light what her name was because after all he didn’t need the Shinigami eyes, and who was to say she was going to be a threat to him? They could’ve been friends having dinner together. Things were getting even more interesting.
After their waitress had taken their orders Near filled her in on what he knew about the case so far. All of the events that occurred up until that point would’ve been overwhelming for the average person, but her way of thinking was so beyond that it was incredibly difficult to faze her in any way. She listened intently as he told her about his work with the United States and that a new L was used to cover up the real L’s death to the public. That part she already knew, but she decided to listen to him as he continued telling her about his theories while fiddling with his white hair, a habit she found highly annoying.
“So, you mean to tell me you have an idea of who kira might be?” she asked skeptically.
He nodded and told her, “As a matter of fact the new L is sitting behind you.”
“Really?” she turned her head just enough to see the well dressed people sitting behind her, “So who is it?”
“He’s a couple of tables down,” he told her.
She saw the silhouette of a nice looking, young man with neatly trimmed brunette hair dressed in a pair of black slacks and a white business shirt and a pretty girl with blonde hair and brown eyes. The young woman had a mouth full of noodles and was scuffing them down.
“That’s him?” she asked somewhat shocked.
She turned her attention back to Near who was nodding and still fiddling with his hair, “Yes, that’s the new L.”
She took another glance at the couple, “I see.”
The waitress came back with her ramen and his sashimi. She smiled cheerfully and told him, “Enjoy your meals,” then went to wait her other tables.
She looked at the bowl of noodles with the vegetables, naruto, and egg then grimaced. Near chuckled and she was inches from giving him the finger.
“Wow, she’s cute,” Ryuk said.
“Who’s cute?” Misa wondered.
“That girl that’s with Near,” he told her.
“How can you see her face with her back turned?” she wanted to know.
“Didn’t you see her turn her head to look over here?”
Her eyes widened and she was somewhat shocked that she hadn’t noticed it herself. She was too busy stuffing her face with food to prevent from gaining their unwanted attention.
“Enough you two just ignore them and we can go on with our evening.”
Ryuk couldn’t believe how callous he was being. With a situation like this, he thought he would’ve been more alert and started to use his quick thinking that would help him out in the end. Instead, he wanted to pretend like his adversary wasn’t even there. Where was the fun in that?
“Aw come on, don’t you want to find out who the girl is?” he wanted to know.
After taking a sip of his Saki, he placed the cup down on the table and told him incredulously, “Now isn’t the time. You think I’m going to risk drawing unwanted attention just to find out whoever it is you two are griping about?”
Ryuk sighed as Misa complied with his demands. This was definitely not what he was expecting. Although, he did however, find out something quite interesting about her since he was able to see her lifespan when she turned around to look in their direction. The information could be useful to Light, but he was going to let him do things his way.
“Besides,” Light noted getting Misa’s undivided attention, “if she’s working with Near then it won’t do me any good to find out her name at this point because more than likely she’ll have an alias as well.”
“Oh, I haven’t thought about that,” Misa said placing her index finger on her chin then adverting her eyes toward the ceiling in a thinking manner.
“I do plan to find out more about her. After all, if she is working with him on the kira case then odds are I can’t underestimate her.”
“But Light, have you forgotten that I have Shinigami eyes?” Misa reminded him.
He sighed, and then shook his head lightly. She just didn’t get it.
“What good would it do if you write her name in the Death Note? Yes, chances are she’s assisting in the investigation, but we don’t know that for sure. And if she dies of a heart attack or if anything suspicious were to happen to her it’ll lead to him to figure out that I am the original kira. He already suspects me.”
“Oh, okay,” she told him.
“We need to handle this diligently, and when it comes down to it yes I will get rid of her but right now we need to play it safe.”
Misa nodded and Ryuk laughed. This was going to be very interesting indeed.
