Chapter 2 – Departure
‘Well, my boy’, said Laurent, ‘here’s a pretty mess your grandfather’s got you into!’ and he went on to explain what he thought must have happened. It seemed that Oscar had been far more active in his business dealings than Claude had ever thought, and that during his travels he would arrange all sorts of deals and contracts on his outward journey that he would then complete on his return. But this time, of course, he had not returned, and so the only way the situation could be completely remedied would be for Claude to retrace Oscar’s steps and find out exactly what he had been up to on his final trip.
Of course, Claude had no idea at all how to do this, but to his surprise, Laurent proposed to accompany him, saying that he had owed Oscar a favour for some past kindness and had in any case always wanted to visit the Far East one more time. So, they arranged their journey, Claude paying for his tickets from the small legacy he had received from his grandfather. The only problem was what would happen to Yune whilst he was away.
Claude told her that he would have to leave and go on a long journey, but admitted that he was completely at a loss as to what arrangements to make for her. Of course she should not be left alone in the shop for all that time, but where else could she go? He wondered if perhaps he could persuade some distant relative in the country to take her in for the duration, but privately he doubted that any of them would agree to such a thing.
‘Why, she shall stay with me, of course!’ proclaimed a loud voice. Claude and Yune looked up to see Alice Blanche, the young owner of the Gallerie du Roy. Although Claude disliked her intensely, she had become Yune’s friend, and Yune would often visit her for tea or, at Alice’s insistence, to use her bath every week. And just now, she had entered the shop quietly, no doubt to see Yune, and had overheard their conversation.
‘My parents are both away travelling at the moment,’ said Alice, ‘and it’s so frightfully boring with just me and the servants. Yune can come to my house, and I can arrange for a watchman to keep an eye on the shop.’ Yune was thrilled at the prospect, but Claude was not so happy. Still, having no other viable option, he reluctantly agreed.
On the day of Claude’s departure, Alice had lent Yune her carriage so that she could take Claude to the station and then go on to Alice’s house afterwards.
‘Be sure to take care of yourself on the journey,’ said Yune, speaking to Claude through the open window of the railway carriage door.
‘Of course,’ said Claude, ‘my grandfather’s old friend will surely look after me too.’
‘I will be waiting for you,’ said Yune as the train pulled away. Claude said nothing, but in his heart knew what this remark meant and how it related to a question he had asked her the previous day, which she had promised to answer before he left.
Deep in thought, Yune then journeyed to Alice’s house, situated in an extremely fashionable neighbourhood on the other side of the city.
