Chapter 2
Two days later, a huge bouquet of red roses and white orchards arrived at the 27th Precinct. The detectives were talking to Ted who was describing a party he attended a few nights before when the delivery person entered.
“Special delivery”, announced the delivery person as she placed it on an empty desk.
“Who’s it for?” asked Ted.
“Card says to a special CI detective”, responded the delivery person as she left the office. Ryo went up and removed the card from among the flowers as everyone looked on.
“I betcha that’s from Rose”, nodded Ted.
“Nawh! He’s not that crazy to pull a stunt like that”, responded Drake. “JJ, this has you written all over it.”
“No way! Have you noticed the high quality of the flowers not to mention the vase? That itself is worth $500.00.”
“So who would send an expensive flower arrangement to Ryo?” asked Ted.
“It’s not for me”, spoke Ryo. “Listen to this.”
To my most beautiful detective.
The fairest of them all.
You haven’t change over the years.
How can I describe you?
Soon we shall meet
And you will fall under my spell.
Yes my lovely Dee Laytner
I will claim and make you mines.
Accept this very small token
As a sign that I am
Watching you.
No one utter a word as they permitted the words to sink in. At that moment, the phone rang. Ryo handed the card to Dee as he answered the phone.
“Just what I need”, growled Dee as he looked at the note. “A fucking sicko!”
“Easy Dee,” spoke JJ as he went up to his heart throb. “Maybe it’s someone pulling a joke.”
“A damn expensive joke you can say”, responded Drake.
Ryo hang up the phone and turned towards the group. “That was the Chief. We’re all needed at a hotel. There was a shooting with at least ten dead. The gunman got away.”
“First the flowers and now this. So much for a quiet Christmas”, moan Dee as he grabbed his winter coat.
“Don’t worry”, spoke Ryo as he went up to his partner. “Let’s ignore the note, find the shooter, and enjoy the holidays. I’ll even rub your back when we get home. We’ll send Bikky over to Carol and Elina place for tonight.”
Dee smiled as he took hold of Ryo’s hand while Drake wrapped an arm around JJ’s shoulders. No matter what happens, they will make this holiday season the best ever.

When the detectives returned to the precinct, it was almost 7PM. The new case wasn’t going to be solved in the first 48 hours. Yet, they were determine to catch the parties responsible for the slaughter at a holiday gathering. There were 19 dead and a good 14 wounded which included children. Witnesses told the police and media that a man dressed as a Nutcracker came in and played with the children before pulling out some high power rifles and started shooting first at some private security guards, next some adults which included the hosts, and finally some children. When he was out of ammo, he ran out of the hall.
“Damn! How could this….this…sicko do this! And to children!!” yelled JJ.
“The bastard’s trying to be the Grinch who destroyed Christmas”, growled Ted as he took a seat at his desk.
“Well, it’s safe to say that some of the victims that were killed were family members”, moan Drake. “Father, mother, two daughters, and son.”
“They were the host of the party. It seems that someone was either after the money”, responded Ryo. “Or out for revenge. It was definitely a hit. But why now?”
“Then it’s time to find out and get that S.O.B.” spoke Dee in an angry tone. “Since this was done to people with money, rest assure that Rose will cancel all of our off time until the case is solved.”
“That’s a poor way of saying it, Detective Laytner”, spoke Commissioner Rose as he entered the room.
“Speak of the devil”, growled Dee.
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that remark. Gentlemen. A very influential family was massacre in front of friends and guests. I just received word from the mayor ordering us to find the killer before Christmas so not to panic the citizens. All leave have been cancelled until we catch this monster. You will all be paid overtime and if you’re planning to attend a lot of parties, keep it to a minimum.”
Rose was about to leave when he spotted the floral arrangement. “I see that you all pulled your monies together to get a nice gift.”
“Wishful thinking Commissioner”, smiled Drake. “But this is a gift from an admirer to a most beautiful detective.”
“Well, Detective MacLean is a beautiful detective”, grin Rose as he looked at Ryo.
“In your eyes, sure. But not in the eyes of the sender”, laughed Ted.
“If not him, then who?” asked Rose as he looked around. “Certainly not…”
“Yup. The flowers are for Dee”, smiled JJ.
“I see. Your admirer must be an old lady with lots of money.”
“Not according to the note that came with it”, responded Ryo. “It tells us that the person is not old, has lots of money, and has power.”
“Can you beat that”, smiled Dee.
“It goes to show you that Ryo isn’t the only one who can catch the eyes”, responded Drake with a mischievous grin.
“Just get to work”, huff Rose as he left the room.
“Who would have thought that Rose has a rival in the money and power department”, smiled Drake.
“As long as it doesn’t interfere with this case, I can deal with it”, spoke Dee.
“And I’m going to make sure that this secret admirer knows that Dee is mines”, responded Ryo with a growl.
“Easy tiger”, laugh Ted. “Save that energy for the case.”
“Yeah!” spoke JJ. “The sooner we catch them, the sooner we can enjoy the holiday.”
“Still planning to go to your friend’s party?” asked Drake.
“Hell yes!! He’s expecting all of you to be there.”
“And it’s on Friday right”, asked Ryo.
“Yeah! And the dress has been updated to stylish casual.”
“Figures that your old friend has money to burn”, sigh Drake.
“Well, time to hit Macey’s”, moan Dee. “Nothing in my closet will pass the style test.”
“How well we know”, laughed Ted. “The only stylish thing you have is you black suit.”
“We’ll go to a shop where I get my clothes after work on Thursday”, smiled Ryo. “You will be fashionably acceptable for the party. And I’ll make sure that you don’t break the bank.”
“Geeze! Thanks for reminding me how poor I really am”, pout Dee as everyone laughed. The phone rang as everyone returned to work praying that they can bring the case to a quick closure.
