It was cold, decidedly, in Francis' office that day. The man had given him a warm blanket and was watching him closely from behind his desk while Matthew sat on the couch, still shivering slightly.
"It has been half a year, has it not?" Francis asked smoothly, tapping his pen against his lip absentmindedly as he always did between note taking, "How do you feel, living in a place like this?"
For a moment Matthew sat in silence, picking at a loose string on the blanket, because he didn't want to tell Francis that coming here had been the right idea or that he felt better and safer here or that he never wanted to leave. He heard Francis' chair creak, and he heard soft steps across the carpeted floor. When he looked up again Francis was kneeling in front of him.
"Do you like it, cheri?" Francis asked, his voice a touch softer this time. Matthew found himself lost in the blue pools that were Francis' eyes, as if he was being hypnotised into giving the answer. The next move was for Francis to cup his cheek.
Matthew wasn't sure how other therapists worked, or even how Francis worked with other patients. Matthew wanted to believe that he was the only one Francis touched, the only one Francis hugged, and the only one Francis called-
"Mon cher?" Matthew jumped out of his thoughts, suddenly aware that Francis was looking at him with slight worry and also slight annoyance. "You were away in your special world again, Matthieu." Francis stood slowly, but sat down on the couch next to Matthew instead of moving back to his desk.
"I like it." Was Matthew's soft reply, Francis leaned back into the couch. Matthew went back to shivering as they sat in silence for a good few minutes. Matthew continued picking at the spot on the blanket, but after a moment Francis smacked his hand.
"Do not pick at it, you'll make it worse." The doctor reprimanded. Matthew recoiled and tensed slightly, pushing the blanket off of himself and onto Francis.
"I'm sorry, it was an automatic-" Francis began to shush him and handed the blanket back. Matthew felt a slight spike of anxiety at this, as if Francis was going to be angry that he had accepted the blanket. Regardless of how cold he felt, Matthew moved to the opposite side of the couch and away from the blanket. Francis frowned, stood up, and returned to his desk.
As the tall Frenchman sat back into his chair, Matthew watched on forlornly and sighed softly to himself. The man began to scribble something onto his notebook, and Matthew wondered if the last few minutes had not all been a test of some sort.
Matthew sat in silence once more, even when Francis was done writing. His eyes found the floor, then the bookcase, then the crook of Francis' eyebrow, and then the window. Without really thinking of it, he found himself raising to his feet and approaching the window behind Francis' desk. The taller man didn't attempt to stop him, simply watched as Matthew pressed his fingers, his hand, and then his nose against the uncovered window, his eyes wide in awe.
"You like the snow, oui?" Francis inquired, though he knew the answer already. He asked Matthew every time he saw the snow, as if he were double checking.
"I love it." Matthew breathed, looking into the parking lot below as if it were the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. The ground covered in white, a few cars covered in white, and most of all the white that was still falling from the sky.
"It should still be snowing tomorrow; you can still go on the fieldtrip." As Francis said this, Matthew turned from the window and shook his head.
"No, I definitely want to see you instead." Matthew insisted. Francis sighed, reaching forward to take Matthew's hand and squeeze it slightly.
"To the park then, when you see me next." As Francis said this, he released Matthew's hand. Matthew nodded, feeling a knot of excitement in his throat, then realised that his time was up, and that Francis had other things to do.
"I'll see you on Thursday then." Matthew said, approaching the door. Francis nodded, leaning back into his chair and waving at Matthew as he closed the door behind him.
