It’s been a few days since Kazehaya had last spent the night at Ryu’s house. Ever since that night, Kazehaya has become more and more anti-social, a characteristic that greatly seemed controversial to his well-known and popular persona. Everyone had noticed his awkward silence began the day after Yano’s birthday. Trying to reach out, Kazehaya pushed everyone away, not willing to talk about what he was struggling with.
Each day at school, following the night at Ryu’s, Kazehaya would sit himself beside Sawako, quiet and stiff. He seemed almost fragile, as if anything remotely startling or hurtful would set off his fuse or emotionally hurt him. He was also arriving a little late to class each day, possibly because of the slow pace he walked now, almost dragging his feet whichever way he went. Sawako concerned herself with his new behavior. She wondered if she should have told him she was having fun without him, so that he wouldn’t feel bad about leaving her with the girls. She hated making him worry and she felt guilty about it, but she didn’t know he was just mentally distraught over something she would’ve never have guessed.
Kazehaya didn’t know how to accept what had happened between him and his loyal best friend Ryu. He should’ve stopped it from escalating any further, but, God, it felt so good. To be loved and cared for in the arms of someone he looked up to; to be protected from worries, from pain and from Sawako; he desired the comfort Ryu had given that night. Ryu wasn’t the ten year old boy he’d met long ago. He was almost a man now, and Kazehaya had noticed it. Kazehaya thought about Ryu in a new light; Ryu wasn’t just a friend anymore, he started becoming something much more. However, it was a bittersweet situation. He knew he couldn’t have either one of them; it was hinted Ryu didn’t see Kazehaya the same way – he hasn’t said a word to the younger boy since the night at his house.
“Kazehaya?” a voice called out. Ayane stood by his desk in disbelief. “Is this really you I’m seeing every day?”
Ayane couldn’t believe the once charming and outgoing kid in her class was just fading away into a dim light. Sawako, worried about Ayane’s comment, assured Ayane that he is the same Kazehaya everyone knows. But Ayane couldn’t accept that lie.
“He’s just been really tired, haven’t you Kazehaya-kun?” Sawako smiled as she turned to Kazehaya, but he stared deeply into his desk, refusing to look up to anyone. She turned her head away in disappointment and embarrassment. She began to think she shouldn’t have stuck up for him; he probably thinks she sees him as weak now thanks to her comment. Behind the pair, Ryu sat at his own desk, the farthest desk into the corner, with his head resting on his left palm. His elbow dug into the desk under the weight. Chizuru, who stood beside Ayane, scoffed, still unforgiving of the fact Kazehaya forgot about Ayane’s special day.
“C’mon, Kazehaya,” Ayane continued. “I’ll have plenty of birthdays; you don’t have to be so gloom about it. It’s really no big deal.” She gently smiled at Kazehaya. No one had the slightest clue of what went on. Patting him on the shoulder, she reassured him there were no hard feelings on her part. However, Chi felt strongly against him.
“Yeah, but game days come around more often than birthdays!” Chizuru snapped. Ayane, startled by her confrontation, tried to calm her down, but to no success.
“You know, I expect this from Ryu since he couldn’t even remember Sawako’s name right,” she added. Ryu shifted his eyes to her. “But Kazehaya, you’re so much better than that.” She wasn’t letting this go so easily.
Chi turned away from Kazehaya and sat herself down next to Ayane’s seat. Ayane held onto her shoulder, restating that her birthday was not a big deal. She turned to Ryu and asked for his opinion, and Kazehaya subtly tuned in to listen. The whole time he was in class, he was completely spaced out, not paying much attention to anyone. But that was only because none of them were Ryu. Kazehaya’s eyes shifted a little, taking notice of the quiet Sawako that sat still right beside him. She didn’t turn her head to him; she was nervous and didn’t want to put any pressure on him right now.
Ryu lifted his head up from his palm. He looked over to the furious Chi, then over to Ayane, Sawako and finally Kazehaya. He thought about what to say for a brief moment, but Ryu was a man of a few words, knowing exactly why Kazehaya was acting the way he was. He turned away from the group, and Ayane anticipated a comment that wouldn’t really change much of anything. However, Ryu gave them a quick surprise.
“He needs to get over it and stop acting so childish.”
Kazehaya’s heart stopped for just a brief moment as he couldn’t believe how heartless Ryu was acting towards him. Having not said one word to Kazehaya after they kissed, his self-absorbed and inconsiderate comment pierced like a sharpened sword right through Kazehaya’s chest. His hands shock in immediate anger; how could Ryu be so ignorant and disgusting, ignoring Kazehaya’s true feelings? Kazehaya thought it was all a joke to Ryu, that he was a joke or a child’s play-thing. He was confident in knowing that his emotions didn’t mean anything to Ryu. After some short thinking, Kazehaya stood up from his desk and turned to Ryu, angry and teary eyed. He felt betrayed and embarrassed; embarrassed over the way he’s been feeling towards his best friend.
“You don’t even understand what I’m going through, Ryu!” he shouted, loud enough for the entire class to turn away from their lunches and stare to the back corner of the class. Ryu quickly wiped away the small tears that escaped his eyes; Chi turned away as he did this, she felt bad for what she said to him earlier. Kazehaya panted in a heavy rage and soon after stormed out of the room. Frustrated, he decided to head home.
Sawako couldn’t believe her eyes as she saw the boy she idolized, the boy she loved and looked up to run away in fear and in anger. She turned to Ryu, who remained motionless having returned to his usual position holding his head up with his elbow resting on the desk. He was completely nonchalant about the whole ordeal, not having a hint of worry or remorse for what he said. Their eyes met for a short moment, and he turned away to look outside. The rest of the students turned back to their lunches and continued what they were up to before Kazehaya’s outburst.
“He left his bag,” Ayane pointed out to the group. Sawako turned to Kazehaya’s seat and noticed his handbag hanging at the side of his desk. She began to build up the courage to offer to take it to him, and opened her mouth to make her announcement.
“I think I’ll –“ she stopped mid-sentence, interrupted by a deeper toned voice.
“I’ll bring him his bag.” Ryu said, cutting Sawako in the middle of her thought. Sawako praised Ryu for speaking up; she didn’t want to bring it to Kazehaya if Ryu wanted to. She turned to Ryu who looked back at her.
“I have to talk to him,” he said. Sawako understood him. It was probably boy related issues, she thought. She was surely right.
“Ryu,” Chi called out. Her once flustered face turned sour and saddened. “Make sure Kazehaya-kun’s okay. Tell him we’re sorry.” Ayane nodded in agreement, supporting Chi’s apologetic remark.
Ryu nodded back at the two, and the day continued on, quietly.
