One year later
Deck of a Fancy Cruise
Chain of Islands in the Pacific
Both boys had been expectant. Not quite because of the change of scenery and Caribbean seas this new journey promised... but rather because the summer had brought them the chance to see Kurapica and Leorio finally.
Gon was particularly thrilled at the idea: the four of them again together in the adventures, for the next months.
And enjoying the luxury of the voyage: The ship had not only hotel like rooms and beautiful decks, but a fancy cafeteria, a library, a pool, a game zone, a sport zone and all of the fancy things you daydreamed and imagined only singers and politicians were able to accede. They were ready for a month of idle living, a lifestyle none of them had actually enjoyed before in their hunter like nomad living.
The before time actually consisted much in sleeping in floors, woods or in hostels. Much of their clothing reeked of campfire smoke (and now it was in the fancy laundry room of the ship). In their journeys they'd met so many people- some with guitars, beautiful strange music and weed, others with tattoos and guns, others with an eye patch and a story, others with faraway pictures in their eyes or far Gone memories of some war. The routine consisted in not knowing if they would have money the next day to eat. It was brilliant.
This would be different. But far from boring.
"Heh Killua!" a boy with sparkling eyes smiled at him.
"Killuaaaaaaaa" But no answer came.
Gon sighed "You are probably day dreaming of chocolate or something" he mumbled while waving a hand in front of him.
"Uh? Oh sorry" Killua snapped out of his reverie. He smiled back "What?"
"Only to inform you, a fish has been pulling on your fishing rod for a while" the smaller boy pointed.
They were both on the deck of the ship, sitting over the banister, their feet dangling.
"Uh? Oh my final catch!" Killua closed his fist in a victory gesture, finally noticing the insistent tug. He pulled with all his might.
And fell heavily from the banister, with his back on the deck.
"OUCH! What-"
The tiniest fish ever had emerged of the sea. The little creature was staring at him, hanging from the fishing rod, wriggling and looking really… small and cute.
Gon burst into laughter.
"It's not funny" Killua glared, his back still on the floorboards. What was worse was that he didn't know how to approach the situation dangling in front of his eyes.
Gon was shaken by another fit of laughter as he was thrown now a killer stare "Sorry Killua!" he said still laughing "it just… it so tiny!" he giggled again.
Killua was failing miserably at trying to look threatening with the tiny fish dangling in front of his eyes. Anyways he liked that laughter as he loved chocolate. But for the sake of reputation he had left at the situation, he still pretended to be annoyed, murmuring something about the rod's fault.
Gon kindly went to help him with his "situation" pulling the fish gently off the rod so that Killua could incorporate. Yes, yes, he still had a ... thing with fish. They had such dead eyes. Dude.
"You should probably return it" Gon said "It's so tiny it isn't even good for an appetizer!" and he sniggered again to be smacked on the head by a now free Killua.
"Hey! It's true! Besides, it might be someone's son or little brother! Imagine that poor family looking for their so little little little baby fish!" He said, probably already endeared with the fish on his hands.
"You and your family complex and dork giggle" he mumbled while taking the fish of Gon's hand and throwing it to the sea with ease.
"Hey, it's not a rugby ball you know?"
"I'm sure he enjoyed the flight" he smirked.
No, he wouldn't let this happen again! He wouldn't lose to Gon! He would show that Freecs' son he could learn how to fish! Ok, that sounded really epic on his head…His thoughts were interrupted by Gon's gentle voice.
"Ah. You are probably right Killua, I did miss having a little brother, and so I tend to be quite patronizing. Remember with Zushi?"
"Oh yeah" Apparently Gon had stuck with the fish now gone. Didn't the boy realize he also had an animal complex? What with rescuing all the stray ones...
"Buuuuuut now I have one!" He said with the biggest smile ever. An animal? Oh yeah, a little brother. Killua pulled out his tongue at Gon and inwardly smiled… The suntan made his evil thoughts all the more appealing: There was a silver blur and suddenly Gon was tackled to the water
"Waaaaaaaah!" he cried almost choking "Hey! What was that for?" he said with puppy eyes while trying to swim past Killua's arms.
"Oh, excuse-moi frere Gon," Killua said with pretense French accent "I just thought you had suggested I was your little brother, or something demeaning of the sort. I had to remind you that I am the older one here." he grinned smug "so nothing of little-brothering me ok? Besides you're not my brother! That'd be weird!"
"But I'm the strongest! And I'm the one teaching you how to fish! And don't you dare use French cause it reminds me of that freaking CLOWN!"
"Exactly. I do know how to piss you off no?" Gon tackled Killua in return but was met by a foot slap on his face.
"How heavens did u do th..." But someone grabbed him by the ankles and pulled him down. Gon was now under the sea.
He struggled to finally emerge from the water. Still coughing, Gon exclaimed "How do you do that! You're too fast!" genuine admiration and curiosity.
"Neh, it's only because I'm so cool that I can..." suddenly Killua head was underwater being pressed down by a tanned arm. Killua twisted it sending the owner flying towards the water too.
Gon's face emerged from the water, catching his breath and laughing. He smiled at Killua, but then he saw something past him. And his honeyed eyes darkened. What-
A cold, dead voice.
"Hello little brother"
Time stopped.
The back of Killua's hair stood.
He turned slowly, indifferent.
"What do you want Illumi" ice cold voice.
"Can't you reply to me politely? I guess the old days are Gone"
Killua suddenly felt a leap of disgust.
"What do you want then, uh?" Killua was surprised by the indifference of his own voice when in reality he felt quite ...au contraire. He climbed easily to the deck again. Guarding a safe distance from Brother.
Something distracted him: Gon's intense look, directed at Illumi with defiance. He too had climbed to the deck right behind him and now stood near Killua.
"We meet again uh?" Illumi was talking to the raven boy, like savoring each word. "Always by Killua's side. You seem such a beautiful... Mmmm let's say tiger cub. Such a strong spirit in such a cute and fragile little body..."
Was that a grin on Illumi's face? Something snapped in Killua, he needed to get Gon out of Illumi's stare. But Gon was faster and said with determined eyes.
"Illumi, they say first-looks are deceiving. Your long hair, for example, from behind looks like a woman. It's when you talk with that low voice of yours that one discovers you're a man. In the same way I may look fragile, but I'm not. You see?"
Killua felt the weirdest feeling. Like laughing in just the best of oddest situations. And Gon probably even hadn't meant it as an insult but as an observation.
But then. Just for one second, Killua saw it. Venom, powerful hatred stirring in the depth of those monotonous eyes. A frightening look Killua knew so well, a look that had preceded always lots of damage. Just a fleeting second, before Illumi turned to Killua indifferent again. As if it hadn't existed at all.
"I'll be here a couple of days, brother. I arrived on a chopper just to find you" Monotone word after word on black emotionless eyes "Actually...you should be pleased with the attention I'm giving you, I'm a busy assassin" he said, a sick irony through each velvety toneless word.
"Where are you staying" Killua murmured confused
"The ship." A sinking feeling "Isn't it nice? Arranging some contacts, moving strings just as easily with only the power of a family name..." he said bored. It irritated Killua how every word was spoken monotonously.
"My crew actually has been given the suite rooms. How I enjoy being a Zoldick. Don't you brother" he said bored, with poker face.
He knew Killua didn't consider himself a Zoldick. Not anymore… His hands had tensed, almost clenching to fists. But then he'd eyed Gon.
The raven radiated anger as well... But that was risky.
Illumi's voice broke the silence.
"So what you say? I'll need your help on a little work."
"I'm not a killer anymore" he spat "you know that already"
Illumi snorted "you may say that if you want to"
Gon took a step but he felt a hand retaining him. He was about to punch the elder.
"Anyways, it's not that kind of work." Illumi added as Killua's heart skipped one beat. He forgot to breath.
"Then what is it?"Gon's voice was defiant.
"We need some info on an old target, and maybe Killua can turn out handy. In exchange he will receive money, Little Gon"
He turned to Killua "Now follow me brother"
It was not a request, it was an order... and Killua felt that ominous controlling sensation. The bastard. Whenever he was around his brother, there it was...
"No. Killua is staying here" Gon gave a step in front of the albino, his voice settled and determined.
But suddenly Killua's heart stopped. It had been so subtle… and yet...the best strategic warning... For a split second, the menacing aura had been directed purely at Gon. Just a fleeting moment. Even Gon hadn't noticed. But it'd been enough. Illumi smiled faintly at the boy of silver hair. Killua felt he took a step forward.
"You don't have to go Killua" Gon murmured. "Let's go please?"
"Don't' worry, I'll go check out what the block head wants and be right back"
Killua realized his own demeanor hadn't even once slackened. His voice was still nonchalant, his face a mask of ease. How he was able was a mystery since he felt his palms sweating.
But he saw Gon's uncertainty, and he whispered confidently "Don't worry. Who knows? Maybe it'll be a lead on the Kuruta clan's eyes, or something of our interest... It may even have to do with Gin" he said encouragingly speaking nonsense out pure adrenaline, while his eyes where the picture of calmness. "… I'll be back in a sec. And when I get back I want to see a fish for lunch" so easily he lied as if the situation was under control. And he smiled, trying to ignore the coldness that was creeping up his chest.
He gave a step forward now, avoiding the dead black stare so well.
"You don't have to." Gon suddenly tried again
"But I will. Byeee"
"But I don't want you to!" Gon finally angered.
"Sorry then"
"Killua!"
"I'm still going"
"No you're not" He took a step forward.
"Yes I am"
"No you're not!"
"Yes"
"No!"
"baa-ka" Killua sighed resigned and pushed his friend cleanly to the water
Splash
"See yah" the albino said as he gave an annoyed Gon his back, lifting his hand in a v sign.
He realized just then he was being looked at with disgust at the friendly display…
But then monotone poker face held his gaze.
"You've never made me wait before brother" The elder observed. As if this was new.
Killua saw in a window glass the reflection of Gon. He was standing, wet, seeing him leave, honey eyes fixed on his back…
...
He followed Illumi from a distance, stepping on his shadow from time to time. They turned onto a deserted corner that led downstairs. Illumi continued to walk down the flight that led into the rooms. Killua hesitated... and continued to trail behind, his head cast down.
He thought and thought. This is probably a job, and they need the info... If not it's probably a meeting. Or maybe only father sending a message through the blockhead. Or maybe just a job...Maybe they wanted him to return.
Tap tap tap down the stairs...
Suddenly Illumi turned swiftly.
Killua was lifted by the collar and pushed hardly against the wall. He felt the air of his lungs leave him. The pitch black bottomless eyes stared at him. Immediately Killua's senses alerted danger and he checked his surroundings for a passerby. But they were at the corner of the stairs. None could see them. Killua internally rolled his eyes. This would be long…
"You probably have missed me Kills" The real Illumi.
