Part 1:
Accept Our Ring…
—————
It’s so nice being home… I’ve missed this place.
In a quiet and secluded area away from the city, Umari takes a moment to herself for the first time in a long while. The golden-furred Flareon is walking along the road known as Bellchime Trail, just north of Ecruteak City. There is a place among these woods that holds a significant spot in her memory; she tries to find it, just out of curiosity. Off in the distance stands Brass Tower, the roosting place of Ho-Oh, towering high above the trees. Tall and imposing.
Without much trouble, Umari finds the spot where her world almost ended.
Instead of wallowing in that bitter memory, she finds a spot a little off the trail and lies down against a tree. A cool breeze blew through the trees, sending a calming rustling noise down the path. The days still end with cool temperatures this early in the spring, but her own intense body heat wards off any chill that would come her way. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows over the leaf-strewn walkway. Umari spots a leaf kept aloft by the wind, following it as it sails through the air. She sends a quick jet of flame, incinerating it.
Umari chuckles to herself, amused at how easy it was to control the fire inside her.
Can’t do that with just brainpower. Nothing beats the smell of a good fire.
What seemed like so long ago to her, Umari was here on this spot, hating how she had accidentally evolved that day in the Goldenrod Underground. Her fears of ruining her relationship with her trainer, and the confrontation they had here, would stick with her as the worst day of her life. Now, she had one of the best Fire type experts helping her understand and appreciate fire at its most basic levels.
And now here we are, almost a year later, mated.
The warm memories flooding Umari’s head about that night were interrupted as she picked up the presence of a familiar mind approaching her. Not the one she was expecting.
…Her?
“Hey, Umari!”
Alice Wingborne, long blond hair flowing in the breeze, walks with purpose up to where the Flareon rests. She is wearing a light jacket, still unaccustomed to the more temperate weather of the Johto region. She folds her arms tightly as she takes a seat next to Umari.
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you, hasn’t it?” Alice asks, smile full of teeth.
‘It has,’ Umari responds with her telepathy. ‘How’ve you been?’
“Okay, I guess… Been recovering after what happened to us all. Is Allan alright?”
Never fails… Umari thinks to herself. ‘He’s fine. A bit busier now, but we were just going to have some time to relax.’
“That’s good. Where is he?”
‘He’s running some errands right now,’ says Umari, annoyed with Alice’s one-track mind. ‘He’s supposed to meet me here when he’s done.’ Umari almost immediately wishes she hadn’t let Alice know that.
“Really? That’s great! I’ll wait with you,” she says, scooting over closer to Umari.
‘How nice of you,’ Umari says, hiding her sarcasm through her mental voice.
Conversation died down after that. The two girls sat and listened to the wind as it blew around them and watched the clouds slowly drift across the sky. The sun continued its path westward, changing the sky from a nice blue, to pink and orange.
He sure is taking a while… What are those guys asking of him?
“Hey, Umari?”
‘Yes?’
“You spend a lot of time around Allan. Do you know— I mean, would you know if he… had any special feelings toward anyone?”
‘I spend almost all day connected to his mind, feeling his thoughts and emotions. What do you think?’
“Sorry,” Alice says. “But, do you think that—?”
‘He doesn’t have feelings for you,’ Umari tells her. ‘You would know by now if he returned your feelings.’
“Oh… Well, maybe he’s just hiding his feelings. You probably wouldn’t understand them anyway.”
Umari turns and looks Alice in the eyes. ‘What’s that supposed to mean?’
“I mean, you’re just a Pokémon. I don’t expect you to really understand how human romances work,” says Alice. She laughs, “Even I don’t get it sometimes.”
‘“Just a Pokémon”? Is that what you just said?’ Umari stands up from her spot, turning on Alice. ‘I’m not “just” anything!’
“Whoa, calm down,” Alice says. “I just mean—”
‘That what? That because I’m just a Pokémon, I can’t understand what love is? Are you one of those people who think we’re just dumb animals?’
“No. I’m just saying that, well, you’re a Pokémon, and Allan’s a human. You wouldn’t really have any idea what he looks for in terms of romance.”
Growling under her breath, Umari tries to restrain herself from revealing the truth. If Alice were to find out, she and Allan would be in danger.
“What’s got you so angry?” Alice asks, truly oblivious.
‘You know what? I’ll tell you! Allan and I—’
Before she can finish her thought, streaks of light arc across the sky above them. The two girls both retreat to the main path, looking up at the sparkling trails. Red, orange, green, each going different directions fly above them. Soon, another point of light appears in the sky, violet in color. It heads right towards their secluded spot on the trail. Acting on instinct, Umari leaps in front of Alice and unleashes a fiery blast at the incoming projectile. To her shock, it does a series of impossible turns and completely bypasses the column of fire.
The strange source of light zips around Alice and Umari, humming and glowing brightly. It comes to a stop between the two, causing Umari to turn around and face it. Alice backs away from the hovering visitor.
Its light dims, revealing a bright pink, metallic object. A lantern with a simple curved handle levitates three feet from the ground in front of them.
[Umari of Earth.]
The voice is soft, calm, and motherly
[Alice Wingborne of Earth.]
The lantern brightens as voice continues to speak.
“What?” Alice asks the voice. “What is this?”
[You have great love in your heart.]
Out of the lantern emerge two glowing objects, identical in shape in size. Two rings, both with an eight pointed star insignia engraved in the bright material, zip around the pathway, coming to rest in front of both Alice and Umari. Alice’s ring then works its way onto her right middle finger, while Umari’s expands to fit on one of her ankles.
[Welcome to the Star Sapphire Corps.]
Both the human and Pokémon are consumed by violet light. The rings now sending messages to their brains, making connections and pathways.
When Umari opens her eyes, she finds that she is floating a few feet above the ground. She looks down at herself to find some sort of uniform on her furred body. Pink and white in places, tight on her body but not obstructing her movement at all. She managed to let herself fall to the ground again, and tested her range of motion. She could feel a strange piece of headwear affixed to her face as well.
“What just happened? Alice?” Umari says out loud.
She looks to see her wardrobe had changed to a similar outfit. Tight, form fitting, and bright pink, with a matching tiara to tie it all together. Alice’s uniform had an eight pointed star symbol, one that perfectly matched their rings, spread across her chest. Curious, Umari tried to see if hers had one as well, finding that it was emblazoned across her back.
“I…” Alice begins, looking herself up and down. “I could understand you.”
“What? Like this?”
“Yeah.” Alice looks down at the lantern, now resting on the ground. “What is this thing? And these rings?”
[They are rings of the Star Sapphire Corps.]
“Who said that?”
“It was the ring,” Umari says. She lifts her right paw, looking down at the ring around her ankle. “You’re telepathic but not naturally, right?”
[Correct, Star Sapphire Umari. Your rings serve as universal translation devices for all known languages, written and spoken. Yours, of the species dubbed “Flareon”, is one of the newer to be added to the archive. More are being added constantly as this planet is being scanned.]
“So, what are the Star Sapphires?” Alice asks her ring. “Why were we chosen?”
[Scans of Sector 2814 showed a sudden and apparently spontaneous spike in Love, resulting in a priority investigation and supplemental recruitment initiative.]
[The Star Sapphire Corps is devoted to serving the eternal heart. Wherever love is threatened in the universe, it is a Star Sapphire’s duty to protect it.]
[You two were chosen as the two sentient beings in Sector 2814 who feel the deepest and truest form of love.]
“So, what are we supposed to do? What can we do?” Alice asks. She looks up to see Umari learning the finer points of her new ability to fly, likely asking for tips from her own ring.
[The Star Sapphire ring can do many things. It can show one’s true love. Crystallize the violet light of love into solid mass. Creating constructs of violet light based on your own—]
“Wait,” Alice says. “It can show you someone’s true love?”
[Correct.]
Alice looks back to Umari, who clearly isn’t paying attention to what she is doing.
“Ring, can you show me Allan Relmstead’s true love?”
[Scanning for human designated as “Allan Relmstead”.]
[Located. Displaying.]
Out from her ring projects what Alice would recognize as a television’s screen. As she thought that, she sees the shape change into the shape of an actual television, hovering in the air in front of her. She has a light laugh to herself before she takes in what the scene is displaying for her.
“You… this isn’t…” Alice looks at the image displayed by her ring. A Flareon, happy as can be, being held in Allan’s arms. “You?!”
Finally having her attention stolen, Umari twirls in the air toward the human. “Alice?”
Her heart seems to stop as she sees the construct of Alice’s ring.
“This can’t be right…” Alice begins to cry as the image fades away. “How can he love you?!”
“Oh no…” Umari lands back on the ground, taking a few steps toward her. “Listen, Alice—”
“No! This has to be wrong! You must have brainwashed him! You had to! It’s that damn psychic link of yours. You tricked him! There’s no way he’d— You and him are— I can’t even say it!”
Alice ignites her ring and flies into the sky, stopping high above the trees.
“Ring! Find Allan Relmstead! Now!”
[Sapphire Tether targeting.]
[True love located.]
In a flash of violet light, Alice is gone.
Back on the ground, Umari stares up at the sky, dumbstruck.
“Uhh… ring? What just happened to her?”
[Star Sapphire 2814.1 has been teleported to the source of her own heartbreak.]
“She’s gone to Allan! Can you take me there?”
[Star Sapphire 2814.1 is experiencing incredible heartbreak. Please wait.]
[Sapphire Tether targeted, locked.]
[Heartbreak located.]
A bright violet symbol appears in front of Umari, the shape of the Star Sapphire. It widens, beckoning Umari through.
“Please let me get to her before she does something stupid,” Umari says.
Realizing time is limited, Umari leaps into the portal.
