Chap. 1
“Uri, wake up! It’s time for school! You’d better hurry, dear!”
I groaned in frustration, mumbling while getting out of my bed to grab my uniform, preparing for a boring day. My mother was an idiot for forcing my ass up for education that I deemed pointless. Yet that’d be something entirely different to do; is to just pretend to walk in the direction of my school. When my mother left for work, that would be when I dashed back upstairs to continue my game of Btoom!, which hopefully Kira would still be on playing.
That idiot of a mother making me go school. All the people...they are all dumbasses.
In my mind, I silently wondered if she enjoyed making me miserable with the tedious task of long classes with obnoxious teens who had raging hormones, and the popularity statuses of girls who put way too much make up on themselves, making gorrilla faces. Or was it the jocks who always tried to compensate about their supposed ‘closed fortress’s is what makes girls swoon.
If I had a whole day in my room without interruptions, it still wouldn’t make that kind of bullshit come true, and this would be three more years of torture for me. Sigh...Hoping my current dilemma could change for me soon made me pretty happy. Seeing everything now in the future for myself, I would be out of this stupid house in my own place playing all the Btoom! I want while chatting with Kira.
“I’m coming already! Shut your whore hunting mouth, please!” I shouted when my mother started to call me again from my room. Heading outside, I closed my bedroom door and trudged downstairs to my mom, who sadly smiled at me. She was brewing a new cup of coffee and there were hollow circles that drained the energy away from her eyes.
“Hurry, love,” she said, before I slung my backpack over my shoulder and slammed the door behind me as I was embraced by the cold morning air. Shivering, my teeth chattered and I wished I could’ve brought at least a jacket to keep myself warm. I hopped over the crevices lined on the sidewalk and stepped on an ant army that attempted to carry itself a torn piece of bread.
Kicking my sneakers on the sidewalk, high school peered into my line of vision and I suddenly became pissed. When was mom going to leave the house? Will she suspect me skipping school?
All those thoughts were left behind me while I was venturing out into the bitter cold, making a note to myself to use a damn jacket sometime later today. I glanced out at the corner of my eye back to my house, my mom’s car still sitting there like the piece of shit it was.
Seriously, I needed to get the ‘Play for 40 Hours Straight!’ achievement. By just standing here, I’m not going to accomplish anything. I bet she’s still in there making that coffee of hers. School was only a fair distance away from me, and if my mom was surveying my next moves, I’d bash my fist into her sorry little face.
“Hm,” I huffed, cursing under my breath as I entered the school premises.
Guess I have to go and act like the ‘educational prodigy’ I was, and keep up that ‘popular’ reputation I owned in this dump.
Sprinting like an Olympic track star, my backpack bounced on my back along with its heavy contents. Home was only two blocks away and I licked my lips in anticipation. After suffering seven hours of hell, I was going to have a rendezvous with Kira! Smiling to myself, I ran across crosswalks and past stop signs.
Cars screeched to a lurching stop and horns honked their disapproval of the main rules of street safety. A cross guard shouted behind me to be more careful, and I ignored it; my focus aimed directly at Kira.
His name appears everywhere in my mind, and I loved that fluttering feeling. My stomach was filled with dancing butterflies and my lips curled into a sneer-like smile. I wasn’t very good at smiling, which was a peculiar characteristic.
The familiar color of chartreuse reached my eyes and I gasped excitedly, racing up my doorstep and jamming the keys into the lock. Unlocking the door, I slammed it behind me and dumped my backpack on the nearest couch. Running up the stairs to my bedroom, I grabbed my headset and adjusted the microphone. Pressing the power button, I grabbed a game controller and grinned happily at the flashing words across the screen.
Welcome to BTOOOM!!!
The usual theme song popped up in the background and scenes taken from the game were cropped into the television. Pressing one of the buttons to skip the cut scene, the screen immediately flashed to the main menu and I clicked on my saved game. On character select, I chose Uri of course, since she was named after moi!
A loading popped up on the screen and I tapped my thumb against the controller impatiently. Sometimes this darn game runs slow like a snail. After waiting for a good ten minutes, Uri appeared to have stood in the middle of a battlefield. Frantic not to die in combat, I slashed my way through my opponents and tossed my bims in multiple directions, explosions erupting in every direction.
A satisfied grin stretched across my face and I giggled darkly, as a green dot appeared next to Kosuke Kira.
“Did you go to school today, Uri-chan?” Mom asked, her voice dripping of skepticism in it.
I rolled my eyes and drawled in a sarcastic fashion, “Did you ask me to go this morning?”
“Of course! Did you, or did you not?”
“Then I went to school today.” Mom sighed in relief, her aged face relaxing back to its youthful expression.
“I’m so glad. Did you earn good grades?”
“Like usual.” Another sigh.
“I’ll leave you alone now.”
“So now you do it?” a hurt look spreaded over her face and she forced a small smile on her face, then exited downstairs to cook dinner. I turned back to my game, now feeling guilty like hell. Ever since this game enveloped me in its violent world, my personality had changed drastically. I needed some real help here.
Yup. Guilt, guilt, guilt.
Shaking my head in disappointment of myself, I returned to the game world where Kira was patiently waiting at a leather couch. He still wore that high-tech armor along with the array of bims arranged like belt that adorned his waist. Uri calmly walked over to Kira and sat behind him, folding her hands in a polite manner like always.
He turned to me with a ghost of smile that appeared on his face, but the helmet blocked his unknown eyes. Uri reacted with a small grin in return. We then decided to make a conversation after a good three hours of leveling up.
Uri: Why did you call me out here for?
Kira: Because I wanted to give you something.
Uri: *giggles* And what is it?
Kira: *takes out a small box* You know what I’m going to give you.
I dropped my mouth at the scene laid strategically before me. Gawking like a stupid animal, my fingers traveled across the keyboard at a crazy rate.
Uri: Holy shit, are you serious?
Kira: Look at my face and study. What do you think, pee-brain?
Uri: Call me that and I’ll reject it.
Kira: What?
Blinking, I studied the bold word typed from Kira’s keyboard and wondered to myself, Was that an angry tone in his voice? In those words?
I resumed.
Uri: I-I’m sorry. Forgive me.
Kira: *smirks* Knew it.
Uri: *blushes* I-I can’t believe you!
Kira: But I think you might believe what’s happening right now.
I almost dropped the game controller when Kira leaned into Uri for a kiss. A relationship request popped up on the screen and I screamed into my pillow. Even if this was only a game, the many fangirling inside me increased. But when I peered once more at the screen, it was more than a relationship request.
It was a marriage request.
Fanning myself, I hyperventilated and threw myself at the bed. The mattress cushioned me in its soft blankets and pillows, along with the stuffed animals. Giggling and squealing to myself like the stranger person I was, who said that I couldn’t act like this?
The marriage request was still on the screen and glowed ominously in the dark. Fumbling for my game controller, I pressed my thumb on the A button and accepted it straightaway. Kira became more happier, his smile and mine illustrating the happiness in the future…
In the BTOOOM! world…
“Honey..?” a whisper came from my mom, who peeked inside to see me strangely; happy.
“Please go to bed. Good night,” she said, before closing the door. I smiled widely and did a cheerful dance around the bedroom, carefully doing so to not wake up the whole house.
It seemed strange that I was a grouchy cussing machine in the morning and so good-mannered and courteous at the night. I think I’m frightened of myself. After prolonging my game time, I went up til’ midnight and typed a good night to Kira before shutting down BTOOOM!
Kira: Later. Let’s have some fun tomorrow.
Those digital words haunted my head until I drowned myself in the comfort of the nightly darkness.
Chirp!
Croak!
Burp!
The sound of nature awakened me from my sleep and I yawned, stretching my arms as far as I could. As soon as I pried my crusted eyes open, my mouth gaped with absolute shock.
I was in a jungle.
I was lying on damp soil.
I was surrounded by exotic animals and foreign nature.
What the hell?
Where am I?!
