Jim stormed into the crew quarters and stood before his bunk, his face masked with anger. His temper had shortened quite a bit recently, he had noticed. It was all he could do to keep from punching Gene in his gloating face.
“Why does he make me so upset? This is how it has always been, right?” he remarked to himself. He looked at his hands, flexing his fingers. He was 16 and would soon turn 17. It was something to be celebrated, right? Yet he felt like he was missing something, something that Gene had.
Gene had everything, in fact. Well, except maybe brains.. He had bravery, charisma, charm, guts, and a pilot’s instincts. Women seemed to fall all over themselves to get his attention. Pirates feared him and often tried to kill him because of who he was. They were only ever after me when I was standing next to him. That goes for both pirates and women.. Jim thought to himself.
He felt the anger pass, as it always did, leaving a pit of remorse and emptiness behind. There was no need to go back up to the bridge, unless an emergency happened. Jim took a seat and poured himself some coffee.
The past few years had seen Jim change from the brilliant child businessman, to the strapping teenager who was gifted in battle strategy and economics. He grew taller, though not quite as tall or as muscular as Gene. Still, he was not the least bit overweight. His physique was more slender, though not lacking in muscle. He tended to wear baggy clothes by preference, which often obscured his frame from view. His face had matured into a strong jawline, which he kept clean-shaven. His eyes were strong but kind, full of the intellect and maturity that still goes beyond his years. The bushy hair that he had as a kid had grown out into a mane of maize-colored straight locks that hung down onto his shoulders.
Suzuka was the first to arrive from the bridge. She looked to where Jim was seated and motioned to a chair opposite his at the table, “May I join you?”
Jim nodded to Suzuka and used his boot to push the chair out for her from beneath the table.
Taking the chair, Suzuka gently set herself down in it, placing her tea on the table in front of her. Silence descended upon the two.
Even after these years, Jim still did not fully trust Suzuka. She seemed to have long-since given up on killing Gene, but she had never actually said so. She appeared to enjoy her time spent with the Outlaw Star crew and she earned her keep with side jobs here and there, employing her deadly skills. Jim had learned long ago not to ask for any details about what she did or who was paying here. His only stipulation was that she not kill potential clients.
The quiet was broken when Aisha crashed into the crew quarters. It seemed that she was incapable of being quiet, or even at being normal in any way. Ctarl Ctarls seemed to do everything in the biggest and loudest terms possible.
“Jim! You seem to be less angry!” she called out to him as she pulled up a chair at the table.
“Uh, yeah, I’ve calmed down, Aisha..” Jim replied. He had always liked Aisha, since in many ways she was sort of his opposite number. He had always been treated like a child, even though he was the brains behind the Outlaw Star operation. She was an adult but constantly acted like a child. Aisha also usually backed Jim in any arguments he had with Gene. So had Suzuka, now that he thought about it..
“Good!” she replied with a grin. “You should totally punch him in the face, you know that nya? Nyahaha getting to see that would be so much fun!”
Jim cringed a bit at the thought and smiled sheepishly, “I don’t want to beat Gene up.. I’m not even sure I could. I just want.. I want…” he stopped in thought.
“..want what?” Aisha asked curiously.
“..I want him to listen to me.” Jim finished after a moment of thought. “He never listens to me and just does whatever the hell he wants! Damnit, none of us wants to starve or take on crappy side jobs just to make ends meet..”
Both Aisha and Suzuka nodded in quiet agreement.
Jim exhaled slowly and smiled a little, “I’ve got a long way to go, don’t I? If I can’t manage just one Gene Starwind, how am I ever going to get our business to grow?”
Suzuka replied, “I don’t think Gene can be managed. You’re trying to accomplish the impossible.”
Aisha pounded the table, “You should handle him the way Ctarl Ctarls do! Beat him up! I’ll cheer you on!”
Jim laughed and shook his head, “Thanks Aisha, but I like to handle things with my head, not with my fists, if I can help it. I just need to think this through, is all.”
Suzuka eyed Jim after he spoke, but did not say anything.
After a few moments, the ship shook slightly.
Jim leaned back a bit, “Looks like we’re on our way back to the station. Maybe I can swing a better deal on the ammunition..or perhaps the salvage has something that will make us some profit.”
Suzuka stood and waved to Aisha and Jim as she walked toward her portion of the quarters, “Rest promotes clear-headedness.”
Aisha yawned and stretched a bit before doing the same, “Get some rest Jim! It’ll be a while before we get to the station, right?” She ambled off after Suzuka, leaving Jim alone at the table. He glanced up to the track that hung from the ceiling and called out, “Gilliam?”
The usual pink communication tube appeared on the track, “Yes Jim?”
“How long till we arrive at the station?”
Gilliam replied, “We will arrive in about 2 hours time, after which it will take a half hour to finish docking procedures.”
“Thanks Gilliam, I think I’ll rest,” Jim replied, climbing into his bunk. “Wake me up a half hour before docking, will ya?”
“Of course, Jim.”
With that, Jim nestled down into the bedding and closed his eyes, the exhaustion from the battle setting in.
