The Guests
“Kyo still hasn't returned,” Tohru said. She sat across the table from Yuki with tea in her hands. “Do you think he's okay?”
“He's probably fine,” Yuki replied as he flipped a page in his book. “He has no where else to go.”
Yuki's eyes scanned the pages of the book, but he wasn't really paying attention to it. The last several pages had gone and went without a single passage sticking to his brain. He was still turning Shigure's words in his mind.
“No. Get out of here. Stop following me!” The front door could be heard slamming, and loud stomps echoed through the house.
“See?” Yuki said. “I told you he would be back.”
“Kyo,” Shigure shouted from his study. “Take off your shoes.”
Kyo paused by the entrance of the dining room to kick off his shoes, and leave them in the middle of the hallway. He was holding a large brown bag close to his chest.
“Kyo,” Tohru said. “What's that?”
“Just something for tonight.” The corners of Kyo's mouth turned up in a devilish grin.
Small hands could be seen grabbing onto the bottom of Kyo's shirt, and pulling. Momiji's voice began to whine. “Kyo, give those back. You can't just go stealing things from the main house.”
“No. Get out of here ya brat! This is none of your business.” Kyo yanked himself forward so sharply that Momiji fell to the ground, and began to cry. Free of the blonde's grip, Kyo ran upstairs.
“What in the world is going on?” Shigure could be heard in the hallway now. “Hello, Momiji.”
Through the crying, and the screaming, it was pointless to even pretend to be concentrating on his book, so Yuki put it down. A slight pulsing was working its way through his brain. Tohru stood, and went to the task of picking up Kyo's abandoned shoes in the hallway.
“Hatori,” Shigure said. “I didn't know you were coming too.”
“Kyo got into the main house.” Hatori's collected voice cut through Momiji's sobs like a knife. “He stole a great deal of alcohol so we were asked by Akito to accompany him to ensure his safety.”
“Ah, yes. I told Tohru that she could plan a small party because Yuki got accepted into his top university choice. I didn't know that Kyo was participating in the party planning as well.”
“Everyone from the main house is coming,” Momiji piped up, and could be seen getting to this feet. “Well, okay not everyone, but a lot of us.”
Yuki got to his feet, and stepped outside through the door adjoining the dining room. If he was going to get any peace and quiet, he should go now.
--------------------
What was it he really wanted? Did he even want to go to university, or has he just been convincing himself that he wanted to for the sake of everyone else?
Yuki walked slowly, his footsteps barely leaving an audible thud on the ground. He made his way down his favourite path that was shaded enough to stay cool, but slivers of sunlight still managed to break through the trees.
It was true that going to university would give him an edge in life; he would have an easier future, but what did he want his future to look like? He couldn't imagine living apart from Tohru, Shigure, and Kyo. Kyo irritated him to no end, that was true, but they had all promised to be a family. Would all this eventually end? Would Tohru, and Kyo one day move on without him?
Yuki was lost so deep in his own thoughts that he didn't notice when something slithered up his pant leg until it brushed past his crotch on its way to his stomach. He froze, and a shiver bolted down his spine. His instinctual reaction was fear. The thing could be dangerous. He could be bitten, and poisoned, or just injured. He wrapped his arms around himself to keep it from moving any further. Quickly, he grabbed at his clothing until his hand wrapped around the thing and his shirt, and pulled it away from his body. With his other hand, he reached into the bottom of his shirt, and yanked the thing out, throwing it far from him. It landed in the bushes nearby with a soft thud. Yuki patted himself down, and pulled up his shirt to examine himself for bites.
“My, Yuki. Are you getting naked just for me? As your brother, I'm flattered. I know of a gorgeous dress that would go well with your skin tone.” Ayami was slithering out of the bushes, and towards him.
Yuki yanked his shirt back down, and felt his face become hot, but it was not embarrassment that reddened his neck. “You dirty snake!” Yuki hissed. “What are you doing here?”
“I heard about the massive amount of alcohol that Kyo had stolen from the main house. Such a naughty boy. Anywhere where that much mind-altering elixir is going, a good time is bound to follow. So I followed him here, but on my way I got cold, and transformed. Luckily I happened to run into you, Yuki.”
“It's not cold enough for you to transform.” Yuki was still seething.
“But you see, snakes need extremely high temperatures. The only time I can truly thrive is in the heat of summer! Be a dear brother, and take me back to the house with you.”
“I will if only because Hatori is already there to keep you under control.”
“Hari is there already?” Ayami slithered towards the bottom of Yuki's pant leg, but was stopped short as Yuki wrapped his hand around his snake-neck, and picked him up.
“Yuki?” Ayami squealed.
“I said I would take you back, but I didn't say I would do it nicely.”
“Why do you have to be so rough, Yuki?”
--------------------
The house seemed quieter at least. Kyo was on the roof, still clutching the brown bag. Shigure, and Hatori were in the dining room with tea, and Momiji was with Tohru in the kitchen.
“Yuki,” Shigure said as he stepped into the dining room. “I had wondered where you had run off to.”
Without a word, Yuki held up the snake in his hand. Shigure's face brightened, and he leapt to his feet.
“Aya!” Shigure exclaimed.
With a pop, Ayame transformed, and the two men were embracing each other with exuberance that was reserved only for their meetings.
“Shigure,” Ayame said. “It's so good to see you, it's been too long. I had transformed in the woods, and was left alone to die when Yuki rescued me.”
“That was because you climbed into my pants,” Yuki glowered.
Shigure gasped, and covered his mouth with his hand, but a smirk could be seen from between his fingers. “You got into Yuki's pants, Aya?”
“Well of course,” Ayame replied. “Going up the pant leg is the easiest way for me to keep warm. You should know that already, Shigure.” The last sentiment was said with a purr.
Hatori set his cup down on the table, and turned his gaze to Ayame. “Ayame,” he said in a stern tone. “Put on some clothes.”
“Oh, Hari,” Ayame chided. “I thought you especially enjoyed the sight. At least, you didn't complain last time.” But he was already heading out of the dining room, and towards the stairs to the second floor. “Shigure, I think I left a pair of clothes here.”
“You did,” Shigure called after him. “They are in the closet, you have Tohru to thank for that.”
“Ah! What the hell?!” Kyo's voice came from upstairs. “Put some clothes on, will you?”
“It sounds like Kyo has come down from the roof,” Shigure said with a smirk.
--------------------
He had not anticipated all the excitement when he woke this morning. It was draining. Yuki took a break from the noise that was Ayame in the dining room, and went to the kitchen. He pushed back the noren with his hand as the smell of cooking food reached his nose.
“Hi Yuki!” Momiji said, waving with his hand held high above his head. The boy wore an apron that was too big for him, and the straps slipped down his shoulders. “I'm helping Tohru prepare tonight's meal.”
“Miss Honda,” Yuki said. “Do you need any help?”
Tohru turned from her spot at the counter, and smiled. “No, I don't think so. Thank you for offering though. Dinner might be a little late tonight because we have to prepare so much, but Momiji has been such a big help.”
“That's great.” Yuki took a step backward out of the kitchen, and was pressed against something solid.
“Yuki.” Hatsuharu grabbed his shoulders, and steadied him. “I'm sorry. Are you okay?”
“Hatsuharu?” Yuki turned to face him. “You are here too?”
“Yeah. Tohru invited me. I heard that you go into your top university choice. Congratulations.”
“Thank you.”
“Alright!” Kyo was in the hallway with a large bottle in each hand. “Yuki, it's time to see what you're really made of.”
“Hey,” Shigure called from the dining room. “Kyo, bring those in here.”
