Level 11
It had been three and a half weeks since the game started, Kirtito had been traveling from one town to another clearing what areas he could. His main goal was to get stronger no matter what it took. Unlike other players he knew that killing monsters, with every progression to a new town was the only way to reach the level that was needed for him to survive, and that meant grinding. Kirito had just arrived at the town Tolbana, he did what he always did when arriving at a new town. He surveyed the area to see what the vendors are selling and what grinding spots had the best game around the area for him to level.
The following day, the feel of the sword that had become a very familiar, like an extension of his arm, had become heavy, with every swing the weight was bearing down on him. Every thrust, every block felt heavier, and heavier as he was getting increasingly tired. These monsters were a noticeability higher level than he was. Normally Kirtito would just stay around the local area and farm the lands for monsters that were best suited for his level, but when he arrived the day before and explored the surrounding area he noticed an entrance that looked suspicious which was located on the most northern portion of the outskirts of the town. As he entered the dungeon he was met with a very hostile welcome by a single monster who loomed over him. The monster looked like a boar humanoid, it stood roughly six feet tall and walked on its hind legs, covered with hair. It had huge tusks and dark red eyes. The beast wielded a double-bladed axe with hands that were part claws.
When the creature saw Kirito, it let out a shriek and rushed him immediately. Kirito barley blocked the blow with his sword. On the second charge though he wasn't so lucky, as the ax came across, he was partially able to block it as it caught him in the side. A big red streak was left where the ax had made contact. Kirito was shocked, with one swing a quarter of his health was gone. As the monster reset to deliver another blow, Kirtito saw an opening and thrust his sword right into the monster's ribs and commenced a downward motion. The monster let out a scream as if in agony. Kirito wasted no time, he readied his slash weapon skill and within a second he was slashing left and right. Kirito managed to overwhelm the beast. The boar went to thrust at him and he parried. Kirito side stepped, while simultaneously bringing down his sword down upon the boar's neck. The blade sliced through the creature until it was completely through. The headless body stumbled back as the last of its health bar dwindled down to zero. The body dropped to its knees and shattered into a million bright pieces.
At that moment, Kirito, had decided that this would be great place to level up. He checked his supplies, made sure he had some repair kits, and health crystals and he commenced to search for more monsters. He had been at it for about three hours now just leveling mostly at the entrance of the dungeon, just in case something went wrong he could retreat quickly if needs be. One thing that made things difficult was that it took forever to level up, and the never-ending grind was tedious. He was coming up on the fourth hour as the final monster had just been dispatched and suddenly a big notice popped up saying congratulations Level 12 Attained. "That's enough for today" Kirtito said to himself. Besides he was down to one more repair kit and he was about to use it, his gear's durability had dropped to thirty percent. As Kirtito stepped towards the exit of the dungeon he heard a faint scream. It wasn't a monster's whale, more like a human and it sounded like they were in trouble. Kirito used his final kit and decided to explore where the sound came from.
Cautiously he went down the tunnel, mapping every turn he made just in case he needed to back track. The scream came again but louder. Kirito went from walking briskly to a run, when the scream came a final time he was in a full-blown sprint. A couple boar monsters had appeared, and lunged at him. He side-stepped and brought down his sword on the first one taking fifty percent of its health, with a quick secondary attack with a combination of a slash weapon skill he dispatched the first monster. But it left him open to the second monsters attack, the slash took him right on the thigh. He countered and performed a double attack weapon skill. He disliked using the weapon skill unless he had to because it had a long-recast time, but the way the situation was turning out he decided it was needed. The second boar monster shattered to a million bright pieces as it dissipated in the air.
Kirito began sprinting again, when he came around the corner he saw where the scream was coming from. There was a boy, and from what he could tell a little younger then he was, maybe thirteen or fourteen. But the boy was surrounded by five of the boar monsters. Kirito shouted "HANG ON."
He rushed in simultaneously checking what skills he and available now, he had his standard slash skill, but the double slash was not ready yet. He came up on the first monster with its focus on the boy. The slash went right between the boar's shoulder blades and he made an upward motion taking seventy-five percent of the creature's health. The boar only had time to turn around before Kirito's final attack came on top of the monster's head. The other four monsters turned instantly seeing the new threat. The boy took this opportunity to slash at the closest monster with his sword, the monster countered but the boy was quick and blocked with his shield, and two more slashes and the monster shattered, vanishing in sparkling specks in the air.
Kirito had finished the two that had ganged up on him but at some cost, he was brought down to a quarter of his health, the third was rushing at Kirtito to deliver the final blow when suddenly the monster stopped and turned with a squeal, Kirito had noticed that the boy had slashed the monster in the lower back, the monster countered but the boy used his shield and bashed the monster in the face. This gave Kirito the opportunity to use his double slash weapon skill. He charged it and he slashed and spun and slashed again, the movement seemed like second nature now. The boar monster gave one final scream and shattered.
The boy went to his knees in exhaustion, Kirito walked up to him and helped him up. "Are u all right?" he asked. The boy looked and replied "I think so" with a weary smile. "What are you doing here anyway its dangerous to be here by yourself?" Kirtito asked, realizing the situation the boy put himself in. The boy replied. "Me and my friend were exploring the dungeon to scout out how to beat the boss, this is the dungeon that leads to floor two, and we wanted to be the first ones to reach it." A sudden sad look came over the boy's face. "We made it this far but were ambushed, my friend Arale didn't make it, I would have been next if you didn't arrive." He replied. "Who are you anyway? And what are you doing here?" The boy asked. "I'm Kirito, and I came here because I just arrived in town and was trying to find good leveling spots." He replied. "I'm Tenzen, nice to meet you, and if you are trying to level you are going about it the wrong way." Confused Kirtito looked at the boy and asked "what do you mean?"
Tenzen gave a half smile and asked, "Have you not heard of the Hunt Boards?" Kirito was dumbfounded that he did not know what a hunt board was, he was a beta tester, and he felt that he progressed through decently. While he was testing the game, he made it to level ten, though there were countless deaths involved, but during the beta none of that mattered. But the entire month that he was a tester he had never heard of anything remotely close to a hunt board, he had always thought it was just a grind and beat the boss to get to the next floor. But one thing that he had noticed since the start of SAO was that a lot of things had changed, and a lot of them not for the good. "I have never heard of hunt boards" Kirito replied. "They are a new addition to the game. When they had the huge update roughly about a week ago, the boards were added, the system adds automatic updates while the game is still in motion, they added a whole bunch of new features, and the boards just appeared overnight." Kirito stopped him almost mid-sentence "let's get out of here and you can catch me up on it when we get back to town, don't want the monsters to respawn and we get into a world of hurt." He said. Tenzen agreed and they made their way back to the exit encountering little resistance as they left.
When they reached the town Tolbana they went to the nearest tavern and sat at one of the tables. "So, what are these hunt boards?" Kirito asked with new found wonder. Tenzen paused for a second trying to find the words to best describe how to explain. "Hunt boards are basically hunts, or monsters that are generated at random by the system. They basically are monsters of different levels that players can take on and slay for a lot of experience and sometimes rare items." He finally said, Kirito still had a confused look on his face, and replied, "Can you show me the boards, I would like to get a good look at them?" Tenzen nodded, and they got up from the table and walked out of the tavern, towards the center of the town. When they got there, they saw the auction house, and right next to it sure enough there was a huge board that had notices on them. One thing Kirito noticed right away was that no two posts were the same. There were others gathered around it checking out what missions that were available. As soon as someone took a notice from the board another reappeared replacing it.
"Kirito looked at Tenzen and asked, "Once you complete the mission what happens?" "You automatically receive the reward, sometimes its Col, sometimes an item. They give almost five times the experience of a regular monster. It's like a boss fight but not as many people are needed depending on which notice you choose." He replied. "Have you done one yet?" Kirito asked. "I have but it was a low level one and I had help, they are listed from level 1 all the way to level 100, some are made for single player combat, others are made for multiple, the higher the level the more experience, and same is for the opposite the lower the level the less experience. If there is a party that defeats the boss, then the experience is divided between them. Also, the more people in a party that defeats the hunt, the less experience, and you are limited on how many hunts you can do per day."
After a brief pause Tenzen smiled and said "I'll show you." He walked up to the board and grabbed a notice. As he grabbed one another noticed replaced it. Kirito looked at the notice in his hand and the saw that it, and its replaced were completely different. Kirito looked at the notice in Tenzen's hand again and it read Great Oak level 15 hunt, location Tolbana outskirts. The notice also had a picture of the monster, and a map of the general location of where the monster would appear and the time of day the hunt would appear. The monster looked like a tree with a face. The face was terrifying, something that seemed out of a nightmare which Kirito had never seen before. As he was studying the notice, a message appeared, it read Tenzen invites you to a party. Kirito hit the accept button and he noticed Tenzen's health bar next to his same as Klein on the first day he found out that he was amongst the thousands that were trapped in this death game.
"So, what happens now?" Kirito asked. "We go hunting." Tenzen replied with a sheepish grin on his face. They went from the board to the repair NPC and had their gear repaired, Kirito's durability on his armor and sword were almost down to nothing. Which meant it was more expensive to repair. They bought a few healing crystals each and the headed to the exit of the town. When they reached the outskirts Tenzen followed the map on the notice where the hunt would appear. When they had arrived, Kirito noticed that the time that monster was supposed to appear was any minute. "So, you were a beta tester huh?" Tenzen asked unexpectedly. "I was." he replied "but many things have changed since then. A lot of new features that weren't in the beta. I never realized that it was possible for updates to commence while there were players still actively logged on." He replied. "Yes, it's a new breakthrough in technology, as soon as the nerve gear was created, they had to develop a way that the system could receive updates without disrupting the players during a dive." Tenzen replied. "So how do you know so much about the game? Were you a beta tester as well?" Kirito asked. "No, my father was one of the engineers that helped develop the game. I never paid much attention, it was all too technical, but I did pick up a few things here and there. When the game was complete Akihiko Kayaba laid off ninety fiver percent of the developers and engineers, my father included." Tenzen replied. "When the game came out I got into a huge argument with my old man because he held animosity against Kayaba's company and he forbid me from getting the game, so on the night of the release I snuck out and bought the system, and went against his wishes. I want to beat the game so I can prove to him that I'm not some weakling, and I don't need him to protect me all the time. I have to get stronger. As fast as possible." He continued. Kirito paused a min kind of stunned. Tenzen sounded almost exactly as he did on the first day. Trying to get stronger no matter what it takes.
Suddenly a chime sang, and the notice disappeared. A second later a huge tree appeared. It had to be an easy fifteen feet tall. But it wasn't any ordinary tree, it was standing on its roots as a man would stand on legs, it had no arms but many branches, some had leaves on them some did not. The tree had a hideous face and made a loud howling sound. The tree had two health bars appear, and above them it said Great Oak. Tenzen drew his sword and kirito followed suit. "Are you ready Kirito?" Tenzen asked. Kirito drew his sword, and nodded at that exact moment the tree monster turned and noticed them, it whaled and started to charge them, the roots leaving indentions in the ground with every step it made towards them. Tenzen was the first to attack, he broke into a sprint and readied his weapon skill. Kirito did the same. The first strike that Tenzen made was placed on the treed midsection. "Kirito switch." Tenzen shouted. Kirito readied his slash weapon skill. When he performed, it hit its mark, the tree monster whaled again and spun in a huge circle slashing with its branches, Kirito and Tenzen blocked taking minimal damage. The tree took a side step, its huge roots were lightning fast for its size, faster than could physically be possible. Tenzen charged again but was caught off guard and the tree caught him with its branches. Just as the final blow was about to embark on him a flash of light from steel came and blocked the impending doom.
"Kirito" Tenzen said in shock. "Now's not the time to be sitting around, we have him down to half." Kirito replied. Tenzen got to his feet, and they both charged, slashing left and right, using every skill available to them. When the monster was down to a quarter of its health it switched tactics. The tree back flipped landed on its roots, and screamed. It wasn't a moan anymore, a strait out blood curdling scream. Arms sprouted from the trunk, and it did a spinning attack that Kirito was barely able to block, but caused him to be thrown back. Tenzen saw this and figured he had an opportunity to charge, Kirito saw that the monster had other plans. "NO, HE'S ABOUT TO COUNTER." Kirito shouted. Tenzen didn't pay him any attention, he was determined to finish the monster himself and get the final attack bonus. The tree monster saw his charge and grabbed Tenzen and squeezed. Kirito saw the last little bit of Tenzen's health start diminish, he had to ack fast. All he saw was red, he had to save him. He slashed again, and again, and finally the double slash ability was ready, without even a second thought he activated it and slashed, the tree monster let out a final scream as the last of the monster's health bar was drained.
The monster shattered into a billion shiny shards. When the monster's hand that was holding Tenzen had fully disappeared Tenzen started to fall. Kirito broke his fall and saw that his health was barely there, only a fraction was left, he used one of last health crystals which brought Tenzen's health back to half. Tenzen got to his feet, and brushed himself off. "I didn't need your help, I had him." He said angrily. "What are you talking about, he was going to kill you if I didn't intervene, I saved you." Kirito replied a little irritated. "I don't need your help, I can do it, and I'm not a kid, so stop treating me like one." Tenzen lashed back. At this point, Kirito was getting mad, the kid seemed like he wasn't going to listen to anything he was going to say. "What would you know about struggle, you were a beta tester, you had an advantage over anyone else, you don't know what it's like, I will get stronger. I don't need anyone." Tenzen said with tears welling up in his eyes. "You don't know what you're talking about, you can't just charge at the enemy blindly that's how you get yourself killed." Kirito replied, now very mad. "You can't stop me, not you, not even Arale could. He tried to hold me back, but I showed him, I took him to the dungeon and now look who made it out, it wasn't him." Tenzen said, tears now flowing.
Kirito couldn't fully comprehend what Tenzen just said, he was flabbergasted. After a minute, Kirito forced himself to speak. "You mean to tell me you went into the dungeon knowing that you were under level?" "I had to prove myself, Arale kept telling me that I was weak and that he would be the one to beat the game and save everyone. I had to show him, had to prove that I can get stronger and not the weakling he thought I was." Tenzen replied, but now he had a half smile on his face, kind of twisted as if he wasn't in his right mind. "I will create the most powerful guild, and together we will beat the game. I will be a hero; my name will be remembered for all time." He continued. Kirito had, had enough, he couldn't take any more, he opened the menu and pressed disband party button and started walking away.
That night he had checked into the inn in the town, and was reflecting on everything that had happened. He was going to explore the dungeon more tomorrow. It seemed that a monster from the hunt board that was even a level or two higher than his was too much for him to tackle by himself. He had always been a solo player he always felt that party members slowed him down, and never liked to put people in harm's way. A lot of times he didn't care what happened to himself but when it came to others, he couldn't have that guilt on his conscience. But he was determined to get stronger, and beat the game. It was scary to think that there were people like Tenzen out there. Kirito understood that situations like this put stress on people, but to lead your friend into almost certain death was something that Kirito just couldn't fathom.
Even though there were a lot of thoughts that were running through his head he felt that his eye lids were getting heavy. Thoughts of his family flashed through his head, how his mom's face looked as she smiled, his sister whose was always there for him regret filled him, he was determined to make things right with his family. "I must get stronger, I must survive". He said to himself. The room was quiet, and even though he was stuck in a RPG, he found solace and tranquility, with everything that had happened since day one he was surprised how calm he was, and what he could live through. After a while the still ness and dark of the room seemed like home, and sleep had finally found him.
