So I think this is going well. Not really sure. I really appreciate you guys taking a look and hope you’re enjoying this story. Now, onwards!
And trust me, guys. I know everyone is a bit OoC. For the sake of the story, they will be.
Here the Chapter Starts
"Surprise, surprise," Kaku chuckled, holding a cup of steaming coffee in front of his partner’s face. "I think you’re smiling. You get some from a special someone or what?"
"None of your business," Lucci scolded, taking the cup from the other’s hand and taking a sip. It figures Kaku could remember how he likes his coffee, having gone to fetch it often when their partnership started. It was more like Lucci attempting to spend as little time as possible with the tag-along and making use of him while he could. He doesn’t recalled the other ever getting his coffee wrong, either.
"Special someone, then," the orange-haired officer chuckled, shrugging his shoulder slightly. "You never say anything about your personal life. You know, it won’t kill you to share something here and there."
Quirking a brow, he randomly threw out the first thing he could think of. "I have a pet pigeon."
Kaku snorted then started laughing, almost bending in half. Out of all things Lucci could have said, that was the least he expected. "A pet bird?" he cackled.
"Pigeon," Lucci corrected, shoving his partner from his desk. "Also, I like leopards."
"Okay, I know when you’re being a smart-ass, surprisingly enough," Kaku snickered. "Just tell me to shut up and I might."
"Shut up, Kaku," he tried.
"Tell me about your special someone," the other ignored, leaning towards the older officer.
With a deep sigh, Lucci got to his feet and started walking off, signaling over his shoulder for Kaku to follow him. If there was one thing he really hated, it was sitting around the station all day. One of his position could do so, but that meant staying at the desk and dealing with tons of paperwork. He is one of those that has to get out there and do something, capture criminals and interrogate them. Find the pieces at a crime scene and put the puzzle together. One of the reasons why he got to his current position is because he’s damn good at his job and refuses to let his skills get rusty.
He hopes that, despite Kaku’s playful and friendly nature, he could learn enough from Lucci to be just as good. A successor of sorts. One that, should anything happen to Lucci, lets him know that everything will be okay. The city would still be safe. Criminals would not slip by.
He almost faltered a step, catching himself before he could stumble. The thought was now stuck in his mind.
Being a cop is a dangerous profession. Every day, they risk their lives to protect the innocent. Every day, they wonder if they will see their spouses or children again, wonder what the last thing they told them was. Will they go home that night? Will they be showered with unconditional love at the end of the day? Or would they feel nothing but the cold embrace of darkness as they bleed out, whether it be on the street or in a hospital.
If anything happens to him… what would happen to Luffy?
Of course, her brothers and her friends would take care of her. She may eventually get over it and continue on with her life, laughing and having ‘adventures’. In time, she may even forget about him completely. Move on to another man, have a family (not likely with that last part). Settle down and get a job that doesn’t involve her fighting other criminals and running off with their cash (though that is more Nami’s fault because Luffy is just in for the thrill).
"Lucci?" Kaku called, snapping the other from his thoughts to realize he was standing beside his car with keys dangling in his fingers. Kaku was staring at him worriedly, but he just shook his head.
His partner doesn’t need to know a thing about his life or his relationships, forbidden or otherwise. Often he would bug him for snippets of information, but seemed to know when he was pushing boundaries and back off. He knows that Kaku will one day see the darker side of their work. For now, though, he won’t let his dark thoughts poison Kaku’s mind like they do his own.
Kaku shrugged, knowing he wouldn’t get anything out of the other man as they slipped into the vehicle. "If we’re patrolling, I think we should look around the area of the Whitebeard Family. I’ve heard there’s been some issues with them," he informed calmly, buckling his seatbelt.
Lucci nodded in acceptance. He’s heard similar things, too. Though unlike Kaku, he knows what the problem is thanks to his girlfriend. An attack within the family has set them all on edge. They apparently know who did it, but one of their top officers is in a coma in a hospital while the culprit that put him there is running around loose. Any man that attacks those he once called friends or family, not caring whether he kills them or not, is a dangerous man that needs to be brought down.
Her older brother, Ace (another high ranking officer despite his youth), is leading the search. From what he understands, Whitebeard doesn’t want Ace looking for the attacker, claiming that something isn’t right. Lucci couldn’t help but agree.
Here is a line!
Sabo sighed dejectedly as Ace angrily crossed out another area on the map he held. "He may not be in the city anymore," he offered in suggestion.
"Then when I’m done looking here, I’ll look somewhere else," Ace told him firmly.
"Look, Ace, I know you’re upset," the blonde sighed, sitting next to the other on the couch and throwing an arm around his shoulders. "I can understand. If anything happened to you or Luffy, I’d be tearing apart the world trying to find the person who did it. But Whitebeard told you to drop it. If a man that powerful is worried that something is wrong, that should tell you something."
"Thatch might die!" Ace snarled. "Teach knocked him into a goddamn coma! He might never wake up!" He huffed, looking over the map with furrowed brows. "Either help me or butt out."
Sabo watched him worriedly, giving him a reassuring squeeze then retracting his arm. "Ace… if anything happens to you… If this turns into something that could end with more bloodshed than anyone would ever expect… What if you die?"
"I won’t," the freckled man assured, not looking to his blonde brother.
"What if you do?" he pressed more firmly. "You and Luffy thought you lost me when we were kids. I barely survived that fire. If we lose you… I don’t know what would happen. Luffy may not handle it. I know I won’t. We’ll both hunt him down to avenge you, which could end up with one or both of us killed. And if one of us survives, then the survivor would commit suicide. Why? Because what the hell else do we have left to live for?!"
"Don’t talk like that!" Ace snarled angrily, knowing that his brother was trying to use guilt to force him into backing down from his hunt. "I know what I’m doing!"
"No, you don’t! You‘re in way over your head!"
"If I can’t take someone like Teach down, then you two sure as hell won’t!"
"That doesn’t mean we won’t try!"
"I’m home!!" a cheerful voice called out.
The brothers stilled before scrambled to hide away the map and straighten themselves out. They may not have exchanged blows, but they looked like they could have.
"Hey, Luffy!" Ace called out happily, reaching over the couch as their sister walked by. "Where have you been?"
"I was visiting Chopper," she answered, jumping over the back of the couch to land between her brothers. Sabo chuckled lightly as he wiggled over to give her more space. "His Grandma is really strict about him healing. She tied him to the bed so that he couldn’t sneak out."
The two exchange a wide-eyed look over her head. "So, how’s the little guy doing?" the blonde asked gently.
"He’s doing fine," Luffy said, pulling a bag of chips from her bag then ripping it open. "He wants to go out and play, but the old lady won’t let him."
"For good reason," Sabo informed, patting Luffy’s messy black hair affectionately. "Remember when you were a kid and you busted up your arm?"
"She escaped how many times?" Ace laughed.
"It’s not my fault you two didn’t watch me better," she pouted, earning more laughs from her brothers.
"We really should have," Sabo sighed dejectedly, wrapping his arms around his little sister. "Then we would be able to hoard her away from the world of men that hunger for her purity and innocence."
"She could find a good guy to settle with, not some old cop," Ace added as an afterthought.
"Lucci isn’t old!" she huffed, throwing a chip at him. "He’s only twenty-eight!"
"That’s ten years older than you!" Ace shot back. "Even Trafalgar was better. He’s only seven years older! And he’s a doctor that can keep you out of trouble." He leaned towards his sister with narrow eyes. "I’m telling you, Luffy. He’s after something from you." He inched closer until his nose bumped hers. "Has he tried to push you for sex?"
Sabo shoved him away. "If he was doing anything Luffy did not approve of, I’m sure she would tell us or one of her friends," he informed sternly. "Or one of my people would notice and then we would be over there, kicking his ass."
"You have people following me?" Luffy asked curiously, blinking up at her blonde brother.
"Not follow you, no, but we’re everywhere," he replied mysteriously, lips stretched into a grin. "I know about a lot of your moments with your boyfriend. Like your make-out session in the park last week."
"They what?!" Ace roared.
"Sabo!" Luffy cried out, pulling away from the blonde. Sharply, she got to her feet and glared at the two. "I can be with whoever I want to be with! You didn’t like it when I dated Torao! You didn’t like it when I tried dating Zoro! You two won’t ever approve of anyone! So butt the hell out of my relationships!" She angrily stomped away, ignoring her brothers calling for her. "Stupid brothers!" she hissed, slamming her bedroom door close.
She dropped herself onto her bed, grabbing a pillow and punching it as hard as she could. The fabric tore after a few strikes, fluff leaking through the tear. It wasn’t enough to settle her frustration. So she turned to the blowup punching doll (as a joke, her Uncle Shanks painted it to look like his old friend Buggy) and starting punching it. Several times, it was smacked to the ground or sideways into a wall. From the force of her hits, she ended up chasing it around her room just to hit it again.
Somewhat settled after chasing the stupid punching doll for an hour, she plopped herself onto the floor and crossed her legs, her lips pouting as she looked around her room. Slowly, her rage ebbed away as she looked over the various pictures she has stuck to her wall or framed on her furniture.
Several were of her with her friends, large group photos of them at parties, carnivals, competitions, or just lounging around in a field or at school. In Franky’s Pop, a café that served more soda than anything. At the beach, holding up seashells, burying each other in the sand, in the water, or eating a delicious meal cooked and served by Sanji.
Some were of her and Torao, before and during their dating period, with a few after. Their relationship wasn’t a bad one, per se. They parted on good terms. It wasn’t the speculation of others that made him push her away, or the other way around. Whatever it was that drew them together faded over time. He became more focused on his studies, which left less time for her. Slowly, they drifted apart.
When they managed to find time to get together, it seemed more like an obligation than simply wanting to spend time together. Torao almost brought it up first, but she beat him to it. It wasn’t anything dramatic, and they remain as close friends, Torao often being one of the first for her to go running to when she had a problem she didn't want her brothers to know about. It was actually her that ended up introducing him to his current boyfriend, Eustass Kidd. Imagine her surprise when the two hit it off almost immediately. That was when Kidd started showing up in the pictures, too, standing near Torao or carrying him on his back.
Then there were the pictures of her and Lucci. He rarely smiled, generally smirking in those photos. The first she took of him was after their first official meeting at the local gym, ran by Jimbei, a friend of the ASL trio. It was there that she first ran into Lucci.
In fact, she challenged him after watching him beat down a few guys without breaking a sweat. He disregarded her at first. She had to prove she was worth his time in the ring. So she did, fighting down four men at once and then three more the next round. He was impressed enough to accept her the next time she challenged him. That was a fun fight. The picture was taken after their fight, which ended in a tie to everyone’s shock. They were beaten black and blue, blood smeared around their noses and mouths with sweat coating their skin, causing their clothes to cling to them uncomfortably. He let her take the picture even though he protested at first.
They had several more spars, a few having to be broken apart by Jimbei when they got too ‘destructive’. After a while, Lucci offered to take her someplace for a drink. They started meeting up at the gym more often then going elsewhere. Numbers exchanged and eventually, they somehow worked their way into being an couple. She still couldn’t remember who kissed who first, only that he’s an amazing kisser. She received a spare key to his apartment only a couple months ago, and they tended to push boundaries within those walls where no one else could walk in on them.
He didn’t mind her telling her friends about them, so long as word didn’t get back to his superiors. She is still seventeen, which would put him in a lot of trouble. He could end up facing time in prison for statutory rape, and having to register as a sexual predator. He wouldn’t be able to get a job because that would be the obvious black mark on his permanent record. His life would basically be ruined.
Which upset her greatly. So what if they’re ten years apart in age! Age is only a number. It wasn’t like Ace could judge who she dates since he’s with a man twice his age. Robin and Franky have a few years difference in age, and no one was looking at them funny. Usopp and Kaya, despite being close in age, got more judgmental looks if only because Usopp’s middle-class and Kaya is upper-class.
Sighing heavily, she plucked her phone from its spot on the floor, having fallen from her pocket during her rage fit. She briefly debated sending him a message but soon decided against it. He’s at work right now and she didn’t know if he’s handling a criminal or in the middle of a fight. He doesn’t need her sending him messages to distract him.
She wasn’t worried about him getting hurt. He’s strong. He’ll get hurt, that’s one of the hazards of being a cop and she knows it. But he’s strong enough to brush off anything. She’s not worried and she won’t distract him. He always lets her know when he’s off duty anyway.
Here is a line!
Kidd is many things, but he’s not dumb. Well, not that dumb. His brain mainly focuses on mechanics, causing him to take things apart to figure out how they work then put them back together again since he was a kid. With his best friend Killer by his side, they conquered school, college, and started up a mechanical shop that specialized in most makes, models, and years of various vehicles.
Meeting Trafalgar Law, who is highly intelligent, was one thing that has gone right in his life. Sure they met because of Law’s ex-girlfriend, but thankfully no drama was involved there. Not like with his ex, who still keeps trying to claim her boy is his when she’s a blonde with blue eyes, he’s a redhead with orange eyes, and the boy is a raven with bright baby blue eyes. He thinks Law really enjoyed doing the testing and shoving it in his ex’s face while smugly informing her that the child isn’t Kidd’s.
That was one thing he really liked about Law, his smug personality and strange sense of humor. He was willing to challenge him instead of rolling over and letting him have his way. He always did like having a partner with some backbone, and Law has a strong one. He could do without his lover’s family, but there was no escaping them. As if they could scare him away, anyway. Well… that crazy ass dad of his could come close.
A knock on the hood above him snapped him from any thoughts, causing him to look up and scowl in irritation. Two cops, one grinning like a kid and the other as stoic as stone. Half the time, he was tempted to say something about that one if only to piss him off. But that would piss Luffy off, and according to Law, pissing Luffy off is a grave mistake. As much as he enjoyed pushing buttons, he isn’t stupid enough to cross over lines, hidden or obvious.
"Didn’t you two get what you wanted yesterday?" he scowled, turning back to the engine his arm was half buried in. He knows what the problem is, and he knows he can get to it without actually removing the engine itself. He just has to be careful.
"It was helpful," the grinning cop answered. "But we actually have other questions."
Kidd sighed, retracting his arm and straightening up. He groaned as his back cracked and his neck popped. Being hunched over like he was for too long does make a lot of kinks to straighten out, after all. Maybe he should have listened to Killer and taken the damn engine out to work on it.
"What about? I told you what I know about the other day," the redhead commented, grabbing a rag to wipe the engine grease from his hands. "Oi, Kil! I owe you five bucks! Think you can pick the engine out of there?"
A tall and lean man with long blonde hair stepped through the doorway with a triumphant smirk on his lips. "Make it a beer, and we’ll call it even," he replied then glanced towards the police. "What did you do, Kidd?"
"Nothing, they’re asking questions," he defended with a shrug. "Think you can handle this, princess, while I talk to them? Or do you need some help? I can call Heat. Or maybe Wire."
"Step aside, gaki," Killer scoffed, stepping towards the engine and shoving the younger man away.
Kidd nudged his head towards the open garage door, walking away with the two officers following him. "Look, you guys already asked me questions, and you took some of my security footage," he pointed out. "What the hell do you want from me now?"
"We noticed something in the footage," Lucci informed calmly. "Do you often do business with criminals?"
"They’re my best customers, if they pay right," Kidd shot at him with a smirk. "They don’t fuck up my place, I don’t turn them over."
"Including this man?" the other (he thinks the guy’s name is Kaku) inquired, holding out a picture.
Kidd took it with narrow eyes, looking over the printed image. A large man with thick black hair in shaggy tight curls. At his side is a small, slimmer man with pasty pale skin carrying around a cane and wearing a top hat.
He scoffed, handing the picture back. "They wanted some work done to their car, but didn’t have the money," he told them. "Tried getting rough. My boys and I managed to get them to fuck off. Never saw him around here before. Don’t know him, or his name, or anything about him. Don’t know where he went afterwards and I really don’t give a shit. He isn’t bothering me anymore."
"So you have no idea that this man had affiliation with the Whitebeard Family?" the long-nosed cop asked him.
"One of Whitebeard’s guys? Shit, does that mean I gotta deal with the old geezer?" Kidd groaned in annoyance.
"No," Lucci answered. "He’s a rogue from the Family. We thought him dangerous enough to track down and get off the streets. Especially since sources tell us one of Whitebeard’s officers is in a coma because of him." His partner looked at him curiously, probably not told about that tidbit of major information.
Kidd snarled, his lips curling as he leaned back onto the frame of the garage door. "Then I know him, only by what I’ve heard," he started. "My boyfriend’s ex’s brother is looking for the guy. Said his name is Marshall D Teach, but called himself Blackbeard for some reason when he came to see me. Guy’s ruthless from what I hear, and you’re right. He’s dangerous, too. Never saw him before then, so had no clue who he was until now."
"Guess you could call yourself lucky," Kaku (yeah, Kidd’s sure that’s it) stated with a smirk. "That whole situation could have been worse than what you had."
"There were only two of them," the redhead shrugged off. "Four of us. We’re not pushovers, either. And it was just to fix up their car. Who the hell kills someone over a car?"
"You would be surprised," Lucci answered then turned away. "Thank you for the information. We will be on our way."
"Yeah, come back anytime," Kidd chuckled with a mocking wave of his hand. "Every second you’re here, the less work I get done! The more I can charge for labor!"
"No you can’t!" Killer shouted in response.
"Shut up, man! I was being sarcastic!" Snorting, Kidd watched the two officers get into the car, seeming to discuss something briefly as they drove away. "‘Do business with criminals’? Tch! The guy’s fucking one." Granted Luffy is more of a vigilante than an actual criminal and doesn’t have anything major under her belt. She can still count as one if the people she beat up weren’t worse than her, and if they didn’t threaten her friends first.
Here is a line!
"So that wasn’t a complete waste of time," Kaku sighed, leaning his car back slightly. "What source told you about the guy?"
"Nothing you need to concern yourself with," Lucci told him firmly.
"You sure? Sources can come back and bite you in the ass someday," the orange-haired officer pointed out. "It would have been nice to know that you have mysterious sources that tell you more than what the higher ups give us."
"Kaku," he sharply spoke, his eyes never leaving the rode but knew Kaku’s gaze is on him. "In our line of work, we do things or meet people the higher ups would not want to know about. If things are said or done in a way that leaves us in a bad light, then we are punished for it. But if it helps us, even if they hear about it, they can claim having no knowledge. If the public finds out, we are the ones thrown under that bus. We are the ones that suffer for it, because it was our choice.
"I’d rather leave you in the dark than let you be dragged down with me. If I tell you anything, you become an accomplice. If you knew anything about my choices, you life would be just as ruined as mine."
"We’re partners, Lucci," Kaku pointed out. "We should share the blame as much as the accomplishments. You don’t have to hide things from me."
"Yes I do," he corrected. "You keep asking for personal information, yet give so little out. It was only after watching you closely for a while that I realize you are pansexual, though most believe you to be bisexual. And your current relationship is abusive, probably with an older man. A woman can be abusive, but not leave bruises like the ones you carry."
The other flinched, shaking his head. "It’s not abuse, he just gets a little too rough sometimes," he defended weakly. "He has a hard time controlling his strength at times and gets over eager. He’s been seeking help."
"In gambling halls, where he loses more money and barely has enough left for his cigars and alcohol," the older commented.
"So he has a gambling problem! He’s working on it!"
"How bad is his debt?"
"How do you even know all this?!" Kaku shouted.
Lucci calmly pulled the car over and shifted the gear to ‘park’. With a deep sigh, he leaned into his seat and looked to his partner. "I’ve seen you with your partner," he replied, unashamed. "You hardly notice my presence, or the one I’m often with. Before you started working with me, I had a few calls concerning him before. Fights, mostly. Some stealing. He often got aggressive while he was in the holding cell until someone, probably you, paid his bond. He’s been in and out of rehab for addictions, yet continues on his way. Sometimes, he would even come to us, cause a scene in the station, if only to get locked away in a cell, getting protection from debt collectors." He tiled his head curiously. "Tell me, Kaku, why you became an officer. Was it because of him?"
"No," Kaku replied, shaking his head. His lips were tight and his brows furrowed, eyes glaring out the windshield. "I joined the force to protect people. To help keep them safe."
"Because no one kept you safe. No one bothered calling the police when he hit you too hard. When you two fought."
"Just drop it!"
Silence encased the vehicle, Kaku shakily turning his head to look out his window. Lucci watched him for a moment then let out a small sigh. "If I see another bruise on you, Kaku, I will bring him in for domestic abuse," he warned, shifting the car back into drive and pulling from his spot. "You are an officer of the law, and you are my partner. We each have our own demons and secrets. But if I have to drag you from yours, just know it is because I respect you well enough to care for your well-being."
Kaku scoffed, leaning to his window and refusing to look to the older officer. His hand gripped the hidden bruise on his upper arm, one Lucci knows is there since he spotted it while Kaku was putting on his coat. His sleeve barely rose to reveal it, but Lucci is far more observant that most would give him credit for. It also wasn’t the first bruise he’s found on the younger man.
But he knows Kaku is far from being broken. Submissive? Maybe. As well as hiding his pain and helplessness with humor and cheer. Yet he is still fighting. The bruises are not from hiding, but from fighting back. Huffing slightly, he thought about the best person to help his partner. Lucci never personally was in an abusive relationship, but he does have an older friend that was. If anyone can talk Kaku into leaving his lover, it would be him. He just has to get back in touch with the idiot and find a way to get them to meet.
Here the Chapter Ends
So going to end this here. Hope you guys are enjoying it. I am throwing crap everywhere and am not sure how it will all tie together in the end.
And yes, as bad as I feel about it, I put Kaku into an abusive relationship. Hopefully, it will end up a better one before the story is over. Three guesses who his lover is, and who Lucci’s friend is!
Also, aww… Lucci does care! Both about Luffy and about Kaku. No, he’s not going to cheat on her. No matter where I go in my head concerning this story, he never cheats on her. So get that idea out of your heads. Let me know what you guys think!
