Chapter 2: How to Use the PokeWalker
(By Jason Foley, also the one who did the previous chapter.)
Mesprit vanished in a streak of light, only to reappear in front of the red haired boy. She hovered in the center of the road, blocking the youth's path, a menacing look fixated on her face. The back clad boy stopped dead in his tracks, a look so fear overtaking him.
"Is this the individual you have been searching for?" she asked in a threatening tone.
Jimmy sprinted to catch up, seeing the black figure unmoving, staring eye to eye with Mesprit.
"You!" He shouted between gasps for breath. "Hold it right there!" He slowed his pace to a jog, then hunched forward panting heavily. His chest burned as his lungs sucked desperately for air.
The red haired boy stood motionless between the trainer and the legendary Pokémon. Jimmy could see the cuffs of the purple jeans suspended over a pair of black running shoes. Jimmy started to right himself, seeing a young man, about the same age as he, with long red hair and a black zip up sweatshirt. A look of fear was written all over his face as a single bead of sweat dripped rom his brow as he slowly made an about face. Upon coming face to face with Jimmy, the look of fear faded, and the look of panic was replaced with smugness. As if this boy knew a secret that he wasn't planning on sharing.
"I've seen you before, haven't I? Ah! Yes, that's right, you chose the Totodile as your starting Pokémon. Jimmy, wasn't it? Tell me, how's Marina faring without you?"
Jimmy felt his blood run cold as his muscles tightened with fright. The look on the boy's face was menacing, yet at the same time almost melancholy.
"How would you know about that?" he shouted, clenching his fist. "How do you know about Marina? The only way you'd know any of those things is if you were following me." Jimmy leaned towards the boy as he shouted; his face was only about a foot from that of the black clad boy. "You followed me to Professor Elm's laboratory, and you stole that Pokémon while we were preoccupied didn't you?" Jimmy shouted feeling his throat grow hoarse from the strain of shouting.
The red haired boy only smirked, and closed his eyes, "Calm down, Jimmy, what does any of that matter now? Please tell me, what difference does it make if I was spying on you, or if I truly had stolen anything, much less a Pokémon from the laboratory of someone as well known as Professor Elm." The young man put his hands into his pockets and spun on his heels facing Mesprit. "Besides, you don't even know if I'm a Pokémon trainer, or just some regular citizen minding their own business, yet you and your wild unidentifiable monstrosity attack me out of the blue? Jimmy, I expected much better from you, stooping to such an underhanded way of life."
Jimmy could feel his blood beginning to boil. He really didn't like this guy, not one bit. He could feel his face growing more and more red with each pretentiously spoken word. He finally lost it and almost began shouting, but managed to take a deep breath.
"Look kid, I don't know you, but you match the description of the person Professor Elm saw stealing from his lab. So, unless you have a better explanation, I suggest you return what you stole before I lose my temper." He saw Mesprit's aura glow and flicker with intensity as he spoke. If the thief was worried, then his poker face was unmatched. He yawned and simply sighed.
"Alright then Jimmy, you can have it."
The thief withdrew the pokéball and tossed it over his shoulder towards Jimmy.
"Chikorita, tackle!"
The Pokéball opened and the yellow leaf Pokémon hurled towards the startled young man. Jimmy threw up his arms in front of his face bracing himself for the impact as the Chikorita slammed head first into the young man. As Jimmy fell backwards he felt the egg slipping from his backpack. He hadn't even touched the ground yet, when he saw Mesprit appear in a flash of pink and aqua with the box containing the Pokémon egg safely in her grasp. Jimmy watched helplessly as the thief took off running, shouting for his stolen Pokémon to return as he fled.
"He has the name 'Jonathan' embroidered on the cuff of his sweatshirt," said Mesprit. "Do you think that's his name, or is that outfit stolen as well?"
Jimmy brushed himself off glaring at the small figure growing more distant with each passing breath. He retrieved the box from Mesprit, opening the lid and making sure it wasn't damaged in the fall. "Nah, I don't think he stole a sweatshirt, and if he did, you'd think he'd have at least stolen a more fashionable one!" Jimmy secured the egg in his backpack and felt a stabbing pain on his backside where he had landed. He let out yelp before falling to his knees and rubbing his tender bottom. "Are you injured, Jimmy?" Mesprit asked, a look of concern on her face as her eyes scanned him up and down. He only shook his head.
"Only my pride."
-----
As the pair continued onward along Route 29, Jimmy's thoughts remained fixated on the Pokémon thief. "The nerve of that guy, just who the heck does he think he is?" The young man stewed, as he felt the familiar weight of Mesprit shifting about upon his shoulders. The pink feline nuzzled him gently.
"Don't despair, we will find him eventually." She yawned and nuzzled his neck before her heavy breathing began leaving Jimmy alone with his thoughts for the next six and a half hours.
-----
Upon their arrival to Professor Elm's laboratory, the weary pair saw him already waiting outside accompanied by Police Officer Jenny. The professor was speaking in a hushed tone, a look of frustration and worry written all over his face. Officer Jenny was scribbling in her notebook without pause, pages flipping as the professor continued his verbal bombardment. As the young man approached, Professor Elm paused from his verbal engagement and turned to him, the worry faded from his face slightly, and his tone softened immensely they came within earshot.
"Jimmy, thank goodness you're safe, did you find the Pokémon thief?" he asked.
Jimmy shook his head and stared at the ground, embarrassed at his inability to intercept the thief.
"He caught me off guard, I was distracted..."
Professor Elm stopped him, and forced a smile.
"Don't worry too much about that, at the very least you caught up to him, did you happen to catch his name by chance? That might help Officer Jenny here track him down."
Officer Jenny was still scribbling into her notebook when she looked up at Jimmy and smiled. He felt his pulse quicken a little and noticed his shorts beginning to feel a little bit tighter. He turned away and started to remove his backpack, shaking Mesprit from her napping perch in the process.
"Mesprit said she saw the name Jonathan embroidered on the collar of his sweatshirt so we're pretty sure that's his name. Also, we managed to save this from any harm."
As he spoke, Jimmy removed the protective box from his backpack, passing it gingerly to the Professor.
"Is this?" Elm started when Jimmy cut him off abruptly.
"Professor, we caught up to him near Route 29 when he attacked me with the Chikorita he stole!"
The professor furrowed his brow with discontent as he heard the story. The four of them stood silent for a long while, no one sure how to proceed next.
"Can you tell us more?" Officer Jenny interjected, finally finished with whatever notes she was frantically scrawling. "Is there anything else you can tell me? Did he have any distinguishing markings like a scar or a birthmark? Odd clothing, custom accessories, hair, anything at al would help this investigation out immensely." Officer Jenny once again began writing as Jimmy described everything he could remember about Jonathan. He tried his best to answer the policewoman's questions, unsure of how anyone would be able to pick up some of the minute details she asked about without some sort of superpower. He could feel his mind wandering as he grew more and more frustrated, realizing Professor Elm hadn't been distressed over the Pokémon incident, but rather he was trying to survive the police force's due process.
As the questioning droned on Professor Elm tapped Jenny on the shoulder.
"I think that's all for now, the boy and I have quite a long list of tasks to complete before the day's end," he said gently. "Now if you'll excuse me I'll be in my office, Jimmy, please hurry along we have much to discuss."
With that, the Professor cradled the egg in one arm and pushed his way through the front door, vanishing as it slowly closed behind him.
Jimmy excused himself as Officer Jenny finished scribbling and began to collect her equipment.
"Don't worry Jimmy, we'll find him and catch him!" She said.
-----
The two found Professor Elm in his main laboratory, the mysterious egg was resting on a small cushion on the center of a large table. The excitement in the Professor's eyes was vivid, and contagious. Jimmy felt his stomach tighten with anticipation.
"What is it?" He asked. The professor only smiled and replied,
"It's precisely what I asked of you, nothing more, now did you use up all of your Pokéballs?" Professor Elm crossed the lab and began rummaging around in a drawer.
"No, Professor, Marina and I were too preoccupied with retrieving that egg from Professor Oak that we didn't have a chance to try catching any of the wild Pokémon we passed along the way."
The professor smiled and handed Jimmy five Pokéballs. "There you are, you can never have too many Pokémon balls. Who knows when you might come across a rare or..." He nodded at Mesprit, "Even cross paths with a legendary Pokémon."
"Thanks."
-----
Jimmy opened his Pokédex, recalling the few wild Pokémon he encountered along Route 29. He began looking up information on each of the three main species he notices on his travel. He listened to the provided information, gauging strengths, weakness, comparing types and attacks.
"Hmm." He thought to himself. "Pidgey tend to fly away quickly, Rattata and Sentret are too fast and will run before I'll get a chance to try and capture them." He looked down at his Totodile, thinking hard. "I don't think Totodile is strong enough to take much of anything on right now." As he muttered this aloud Mesprit hovered close to his face.
"It would be most wise of you to teach your Totodile a few new techniques before challenging anyone."
Jimmy only nodded in agreement.
"I think water gun would really help out for our offense, Totodile doesn't have any ranged attacks and it would be good to be able to maintain distance." The legendary Pokémon beamed with pride.
"That's a wonderful idea Jimmy, you're proving to be an even more fortunate choice of host. You haven't even had Pokémon battle yet, and already you show a good instinct for tactics. I did quite well with my choice."
"Uh, thanks, I guess?" Jimmy stammered, face growing red, although he wasn't sure if Mesprit was complimenting him or herself at that point. She hovered close to his shoulder, slightly behind him in favor of her usual napping spot on his shoulder. The sun was setting as they continued on towards Cherrygrove. He shivered slightly as the sun sank lower and the sky slowly grew darker, so dark in fact that he was startled to notice red, gleaming pairs of bright glowing red circles, scattered amongst the trees. As soon as he recovered from his initial shock, he withdrew his Pokédex, scanning one of the closer sets of red discs. The image of a round, single footed owl looking Pokémon with red eyes appeared on his screen.
"Hoothoot. Type: Air. It has a perfect sense of time. Whatever happens, it keeps rhythm by precisely tilting its head in accordance with the passage of time."
"Well, that's interesting, a Pokémon like that could really come in handy." He looked at his five empty Pokéballs, and then remembering his encounter with Jonathan earlier that day he clenched his fist angrily. "Later though, right now I think we should set up camp instead."
Mesprit nodded in approval and began helping the young man clear an area for the night. The two went about their routines, slowly coming into synchronization, as familiarity between the two grew stronger.
"The town of Cherry Grove is still a few hours walk from where we are Jimmy. If we wake up early we can be there before lunch tomorrow."
Jimmy nodded, his head heavy with exhaustion. He could feel the comfortable weight on Mesprit roosting on his shoulder as he leaned back against a tree and closed his eyes. He felt his thoughts drifting towards Officer Jenny, imagining her being attacked by a Pokémon off guard. He tried to push thoughts of Jonathan from his mind, but they kept looping back to his face, that smug look, that cocky tone he had. He started thinking about Marina, wondering if she was doing okay. He didn't want to admit it, but he sort of missed having her around. Especially when it was quiet, he started to feel alone, becoming acutely aware of the thousands, and thousands of red glowing eyes glued to him.
"They're quite harmless you know. Unless provoked, they wont attack, and prefer to run when threatened. So please get some rest, we have much to accomplish in the morning." Mesprit nuzzled Jimmy's neck tenderly, helping to ease that cold empty feeling that was building in his gut. "Yeah, you're right, goodnight Mesprit." Jimmy once again closed his eyes, and felt his breathing slowly fall into rhythm with the Pokémon's.
Thursday, February 29, 1996
Early in the morning, the duo broke camp quickly, not taking the time to eat, and as a result Jimmy's stomach began to growl audibly as the sun climbed higher and higher in the morning sky. He was in the middle of attempting to create a cheeseburger out of the molecules in the air when something blue and round, about the size and shape of an orange bounced lightly off his shoulder. The boy crouched down to retrieve the object when another bounced off his head in a similar fashion. "Hey, what's going on?" he shouted as he saw Mesprit shaking a tree branch above him.
The pink Pokémon then lowered herself in front of him and smiled. Jimmy retrieved the fruits, lifting one towards his mouth. It was ripe and firm, he could almost taste the sweet juice when he was stopped mid attempt bye the frantic shouting of a certain, feminine feline voice.
"No Jimmy! Those aren't for you at all! Please don't eat that!" In a streak of pink and aqua light his hand was empty, and Mesprit was holding the blue fruit as she hovered near eye level in front of him. "Pokémon use these berries during battle. It gives them a slight combat advantage when used properly. These are not for breakfast Jimmy, we acquired them for your Totodile's use."
The grumbling in his stomach only mad his sigh all the heavier. He withdrew a Pokéball and tossed it, releasing the Totodile. He motioned towards the fruit on the ground, and watched as the Pokémon approached him cautiously, then froze, staring directly at him.
"Is something wrong? Go on and take it! This thing is supposed to help you right?" Frustration was growing inside of him. "You would think that a Pokémon would actually want to take something like that."
"He doesn't trust you. Not yet at least. You will have to have more empathy, how would you have felt if you were your Totodile, Jimmy? Would you just take fruit a stranger tossed at your feet?"
She was right, he hadn't thought about that. He was so busy running errands and worrying about catching the Pokémon thief he hadn't established a bond with his Totodile. He reached out towards his Totodile with the other berry.
"Here you go, I brought you something that should help you in one of our upcoming battles."
Mesprit smiled and placed the second fruit akin to the first within Jimmy's hands. The Totodile shifted its stance, and then approached slowly. It sniffed the berries, and then retrieved one of them, smiling brightly at Jimmy. Mesprit was hovering above Jimmy's left shoulder again. "Use it wisely." She said as Jimmy stored the second berry in his backpack.
-----
Upon reaching the Cherrygrove City, Jimmy looked at the overlay map located at the entrance of the city. He scanned the streets until finding a Pokémart, making his way towards it immediately. Upon entering the Pokémart, the two were greeted by the cashier as they made their way towards the Training Manuals, or TM's as they were called by most trainers. Scanning the nine different techniques, he looked inside of his wallet. He had 3,000 Poken. The price of just one of these manuals would cost a third of what he had, which would mean he wouldn't be able to afford supplies to travel and battle with. He sighed again, and left the store in a gloom. He would just have to make due with what little he had until he could win a few Pokémon matches.
As he reluctantly exited the store empty handed, Jimmy remembered his PokéWalker. He withdrew the device and began to read the instruction manual. He fidgeted with the settings until he was satisfied, then loaded it with a smile. "I can't wait to use this thing out there!" He said excitedly to Mesprit, who had once again assumed her napping pose and wasn't paying him any mind at all.
-----
"Caterpie. Type: Bug. For protection, it releases a horrible stench from the antennae on its head to drive away enemies."
"Weedle . Type: Bug/Poison. Its poison stinger is very powerful. Its bright-colored body is intended to warn off its enemies."
"Ledyba. Type: Bug/Air. It is very timid. It will be afraid to move if it is alone. But it will be active if it is in a group."
"Well," said Jimmy, putting his Pokédex away. "The Caterpie and Weedle don't seem very evasive. Maybe we should try catching one of those?" Mesprit shrugged.
"It's worth a try, we have nothing to lose so you might as well attempt." He withdrew one of the Pokéballs and enlarged it. He crouched slightly, making his silhouette as small as he possibly could. He approached slowly, controlling his breathing and focusing. "Let's see if I can place this in just he right spot." he took a deep breath and pitched the Pokéball towards a small group of yellow centipede looking Pokémon.
As the ball landed it cracked open with a loud electronic chime. Many of the creatures scattered away, but not before one of them was engulfed in a red plasma light radiating from the Pokéball. Jimmy bit his lower lip with anticipation as he watched the ball tremble and bounce. The ball hopped up one, then bounced around and shook furiously again before finally coming to a rest. The feline pixie flew down to scoop up the prize. She winked as she tossed it over to him with a flick of her tails. Jimmy was quick to catch it, rolling it around in his fingers. This was his very first successful Pokémon catch. It was an amazing rush that he couldn't describe. Better than anything else he had ever felt in life. Mesprit beamed again.
"Now, let's try a Caterpie!"
-----
Jimmy spent the next few hours capturing more of the wild Pokémon he knew were indigenous to the area. He continued to experiment with trial an error, using newly captured Pokémon to help him gain advantages. Under Mesprit's guidance, it didn't take many attempts before he had captured himself a Caterpie, a Pidgey, and a Ledyba. The tricks and techniques Mesprit explained to him as they hunted instilled a confidence in Jimmy he had never felt before. Unfortunately for him however, there were no other species in the area, leaving him just one Pokémon shy of a full party.
After nearly two hours down the scenery became more familiar. He could almost hear Marina's voice, teasing him as he remembered the joke she had made when they passed by that scarecrow earlier. He smiled at the nostalgia, thinking again about how much he missed Marina when out of the corner of his eye he thought he the scarecrow move. He stopped dead in his tracks, and motioned for Mesprit to come closer.
"Am I seeing things or did that scarecrow just move?"
The pink pixie looked at him inquisitively.
"What scarecrow are you speaking of?"
Jimmy could feel his gut sink like a stone.
"That scarecrow over there by the house, Mes, don't you see it?"
Mesprit laughed.
"That's not a scarecrow, that's an old man standing in front of his shop. Do you think we should pay him a visit?"
The two approached the humble but well maintained home, where a balding man greeted them with a warm smile offering them a place to sit and rest for a moment. Jimmy and Mesprit made small talk and the old man was friendly and kind. Offering Jimmy insight on the properties of berries, and the different effects they have on Pokémon.
"For example," The old man continued handing Jimmy another blue berry the size of a tangerine. "This Oran Berry is used during a battle to gain a quick boost of strength."
Jimmy nodded.
"Oh, like a Pokémon energy drink then?"
"Not quite," the old man chuckled. "More like taking a bottle of pain reliever."
Jimmy was educated on the specific properties for a long time. After serving a light lunch, the old man told them to help themselves to any ripe berries they could find on his land. An offer much appreciated, although Mesprit informed him that none of the berries were.
As they continued along the road, Jimmy was suddenly halted by the sound of a shouting voice.
"Hey! Stop! You there!"
Jimmy watched as a youngster jogged from where he was crouched within the tall grass.
"Who are you?" he asked the younger boy as he approached.
"I'm a Pokémon trainer, you're one too right? I saw the Pokéballs and wanted to see if you'd battle me?"
Jimmy looked over the youth, who was barely out of grade school from the looks of him.
"I don't even have enough Pokémon to have a proper battle. I'm sorry kid, but I'm going to have to pass up on that for now."
"One on one then?" the kid shouted as Jimmy started to walk past.
Jimmy thought about that for a moment. Mesprit nodded at him and he turned to face the young boy.
"All right then, let's do this!" He shouted as he tossed a Pokéball towards the boy. "Totodile! Let's see what you've got!" he called out as the little blue bipedal crocodile manifested in a flash of red plasmatic light.
"Rattata! Go!" the boy shouted as a small purple rat appeared.
Totodile attacked with scratch while the Rattata countered with a quick attack. As the Rattata tried to lunge, Totodile slapped it away with her large claws.
"Rattata! Tackle!" the boy shouted frantically.
"Totodile! Scratch attack!" The bipedal croc smacked the charging rat against the ground causing it to bounce back, looking weary and visibly injured.
"Rattata, come back!" shouted Jimmy's opponent, firing a red prismatic beam from the retrieval mechanism built into all Pokéballs and snatching up his Rattata. "Totodile, great job!" Jimmy beamed proudly as he handed a second berry to Totodile. "Eat up! You've earned it!" he said as his Pokémon returned.
"You're really tough!" said the young boy. "My name is Joey, what's yours?" the boy reached out his hand.
"Jimmy, and thanks, I actually just started."
A big smile spread across Joey's face, "Do you wanna trade numbers too? I just started too, maybe when I'm more experienced we could have a rematch?"
-----
Only a few minutes down the road, another young rookie trainer awaited Jimmy's arrival. This boy was larger, and not nearly as polite. The boy didn't even ask, he just shouted.
"Hey kid! I hope you're ready!" before releasing a Pidgey. The ambush didn't help Jimmy's position as he barely released Totodile in time to catch the tackle attack the opposing trainer unleashed upon them.
"Tackle! Tackle! Tackle!" the Pidgey heard her trainer shout as Totodile struggled to regain her balance. As Jimmy heard the shouting he watched the Pidgey land multiple blows at full force, knocking Totodile down.
"Totodile return" Jimmy called out aloud as he retrieved his injured Pokémon, his anger building towards the other trainer. "Weedle, I choose you!" he shouted as he tossed a secondary Pokéball into the ring. He recalled his Pokémon.
"You win, I'm not dealing with anything poisonous. I don't want my Pokémon to die out here, the nearest PokeCenter is miles away." His only other Pokémon was another Rattata, which didn't have any ranged attacks. He couldn't afford to use antidotes unless it was an emergency, not for a casual roadside Pokémon battle; and this being the middle of a route, there were no nearby PokeCenters. Thus, he had to save whatever antidotes he did own would remain for emergency use only. "I forfeit, there's no safe way to battle you with that thing."
The remainder of Route 30 became an endless gauntlet of Pokémon battles. The various young trainers and rookie bug catchers seemed to appear out of nowhere. Jimmy and Mesprit could feel the fatigue setting in on themselves as well as Jimmy's Pokémon. The endless stream of caterpies, pidgies and rattatas was pushing Jimmy to the brink of exhaustion. He and his Pokémon were all in dire need of a rest. His Totodile had taken multiple tackles and was injured enough to slow her down. If it weren't for his Weedle's poisonous sting, they might not have made it out of the last few matches so easily.
-----
There's no way I'll ever be able to take on a gym like this, Jimmy thought, replaying the battles in his head, not satisfied with his own performance.
The weary pair continued along silently until the reached the cross roads of Route 30 and Route 31. Jimmy turned past an opening in a large plateau and stopped when they came across a clear, cool, pond. He released his Pokémon from their balls and allowed them to clean up and refresh themselves in the water for a while. While the Pokémon cleaned off the remnants of the Caterpie webs, Jimmy became aware that he was hot, and could use a relaxing dip in the pond as well.
As he removed his clothes, Mesprit watched him carefully.
"This location is quite ideal indeed. Secluded, serene, and quite a beautiful view." The pixie scanned the area and noticed a dark secluded cave off in the distance. "Interesting, we shall return here soon, that I can promise."
Jimmy emerged from the water feeling refreshed and clean. His skin no longer felt sticky and hot, he dried off and began to dress himself. He was putting his shirt on when he felt a bunch of firm, heavy little objects bounce off the top of his head. He looked up to see Mesprit giggling above him as she dropped another object on him. Jimmy caught the pink pointy fruit and looked down to see three more at his feet. As the boy bent down to scoop them up his eye caught a yellowish bell shaped Pokémon hiding out in the thick grass.
"Bellsprout," his Pokedex recited. "Type: a Grass/Poison. If it notices anything that moves, it immediately flings its vine at the object."
Jimmy smirked as he reached for a Pokéball slowly, then stopped himself as he began to devise a plan in his head and grasped three Pokéballs and closed his eyes taking a deep breath. He slowly opened his eyes, and then shot up both arms outstretched hurling three Pokéballs at once. "Pidgey, tackle, Caterpie and Weedle, string shot!" he shouted as the Pokémon manifested from their resting places in a flash of bright red light. Before the Bellsprout had a chance to react the two bugs had entwined it between them as the Pidgey slammed into it, savagely knocking it to the ground. As it made contact with the hard dirt, Jimmy tossed a PokéBall and watched as the Bellsprout vanished without the PokéBall even making a single hop.
Jimmy retrieved his PokéWalker and inserted his Pokémon into it randomly as a screen lit up presenting him with the following options:
Refreshing Field
Noisy Forest
He looked towards Noisy Forest, thinking the change of scenery would be nice for a while. Unfortunately for him, Noisy Forest would have been more appropriately called "Noisy Jungle" instead.
Upon releasing Caterpie to walk by him, Jimmy made his way through the forest, spotting several new Pokémon that he had never encountered in person before. He saw flocks of Spearows taking off from their hiding places in the tall grass. He saw Venonats sleeping upside down from tree limbs deeper into the forest. Jimmy wished he had bought more Pokéballs before leaving town; the five Professor Elm had long since been filled with the other wild Pokémon he encountered along the way. He hoped he would be able to afford a few more when he arrived at the next town, or else this would prove to be a very difficult journey indeed. He also needed variety above quantity.
Jimmy had captured mostly Bug-type Pokémon along the route with a few exceptions. His team needed more balance; there was the disadvantage of having limited or no defense against specific attacks with a single Pokémon type. As he pondered what other types he could find easily in the area, his eye caught a green glimmer. He bent down to retrieve a small fragment of shiny green stone.
"Huh, I wonder what this is?" Upon closer examination, he could see that it was flat and had about straight edges forming a triangular half of what looked to be a rectangle. He placed the object into his pocket as he gave one last look around, then he and Caterpie began to make their way back towards camp.
-----
It was nearly sundown when Jimmy finally returned, finding Mesprit exactly where he had left her.
"I see you've have quite the productive day today, haven't you?"
The pixie yawned and began to hover lazily in front of Jimmy.
"Remember I am a guardian, Jimmy, this is my natural state of being."
"Guardian is not synonymous with nap aficionado," said Jimmy, scowling slightly.
The legendary Pokémon yawned again and hovered closer.
"That's because you've been wasting too much time. I am merely waiting for you to take this mission seriously that is all." She then hovered above the pond and slowly lowered herself in toes first. An adorable smile crossed her mouth as she closed her eyes and sank into the cool, clear water, before continuing on. "The fate of your entire world rests atop your shoulders Jimmy. It would behoove you to take the task a little less lightly. Lest everything you've ever cared about become obliterate within the blink of an eye. After which anything surviving would be ripped apart, being pulled into the gates of beyond. IT would be quite messy indeed, however, tis your world to save, I could simply find another planet to inhabit if that were a better option."
"Fate of the world?" Jimmy said confused, "What do you mean, the fate of the world is on my shoulders? I never asked for this, so it's not fair of you to constantly degrade me for not understanding something that your refuse to explain!"
Mesprit disappeared underneath the water. The tiny concentration of bubbles slowly ceased, as the waters surface grew placid once again. The young man took a step back letting out a gasp as a bright pink flash shot straight up into the sky, only for Mesprit to rematerialize in front of him, not a drop of water clinging to her soft pink skin.
"There is much to explain to you Jimmy. However, your mind isn't quite ready to grasp the concept of what I need of you in an objective manner."
"What the heck does any of that even mean? You always talk in these obscure half details, can't you just give me a straight answer for once?"
Mesprit smiled and leaned in to whisper into his ear.
"It means you're still not ready to listen, and until you are, you'll have to just be left in the dark, yet know that should you refuse, or even worse should we fail, then it won't really matter what Jonathan, or Team Rocket, or anyone else has ever done. All existence as we know it will cease, so let's just continue on for now, and approach this when you're more opened-minded, shall we?"
Jimmy stewed over this concept for a while before nodding his head and replying.
"I hope I'm ready soon, then." He began to empty his pockets in front of his companion. She looked over the various fruits and berries explaining their uses, and precautions to the rookie trainer.
"That powder you found right there, should only be used as a last resort, life or death situations or emergencies only. Its very potent and long term usage can cause a number of nasty and harmful side effects."
The young man held out the green shard he had found, allowing the Pokémon to examine it up close.
"That IS a shard, of what I know not," said Mesprit, furrowing her brow. "Uxie would likely know, he knows what all of those things used to be. Unfortunately that shall have to wait until we reunite in Sinnoh."
Jimmy shrugged and placed wrapped it up in a handkerchief. He then placed it between two shirts in order to prevent it from becoming more damaged than it already possibly was. Mesprit once again hovered above the water, smiling at her reflection and using her toes to play with the surface.
"Violet City is up ahead, yet I feel more comfortable here in this place, it's... Serene..."
Jimmy nodded and began to set up camp. The pair would need their rest; tomorrow would be a very busy day.
