"Is that him?" asked Mesprit.
"You!" shouted Jimmy.
The young man came to a stop before him. He wore a black zip-up sweatshirt, a pair of purple jeans, and a pair of black running shoes, and had scarlet hair reaching down behind his neck.
"Don't you look vaguely familiar!" said the thief. "You're the one who got that scientist's Totodile, right?"
"How do you know?" asked Jimmy. "Were you spying on us?"
"And what if I was?"
"Just give me back that Pokemon, would ya?"
"Oh, you want it so badly? Sure."
The hostile trainer drew out the stolen Pokemon.
"Chikorita!"
Out came a quadrupedal yellow Pokemon with a leaf on its head and a ring of thorns lining its neck.
"Knock that guy down!"
Jimmy didn't have time to get ready before the Pokemon leapt at him with full force. He lost his grip on the egg, but Mesprit was able to swoop down and prevent it from landing with disastrous results.
"The name's Jonathan!" said the redhead, while withdrawing Chikorita. "Don't you forget it!"
He then took off while Jimmy lay on his backside, clutching his chest.
-----
Neither Jimmy nor Mesprit said a word to eachother during the six-hour trek back through Route 29. Only one thought remained on his mind the whole time.
-----
Upon finally reaching the lab, Jimmy saw the professor speaking with a police officer.
"Elm..."
"Jimmy?"
"Listen... I ran into that guy, but he got away."
"Did you manage to get his name?" asked the cop.
"Jonathan. He had red hair and a black sweatshirt."
"Can you tell us more?"
"I was just about to reach Route 29 before stopping him. He pulled the Pokemon on me, and had it ram me down before running off."
"Please report to us if you see him again."
"I will."
With that, the boy and Elm watched as the officer left, before facing eachother. The sight of the egg did nothing short of perking the scientist up.
"Is that..."
"Just what you asked me to get," said Jimmy, handing the egg over.
"Excellent. Now, just wait right there, and I'll give you something."
The scientist opened his desk drawer, and withdrew five Pokeballs."
"Here. They're all empty, so good luck catching some more Pokemon from the wild."
"Alright!"
-----
Having already seen at least three different species of Pokemon in abundance on Route 29, Jimmy started his journey for real by analyzing each of them with the Pokedex, Totodile by his side.
"Hmmmm... Pidgey can fly, and Rattata and Sentret run away easily. They're all too small and fast for just a Pokeball, and Scratch and Leer won't be enough for Totodile to fight any with. I guess I'm gonna have to level her up to learn Water Gun first."
And so the two of them walked, Mesprit hovering behind, down the same path back to Cherrygrove, until it got dark mid-route, at which point they noticed gleaming pairs of round, red eyes here and there. He drew his Pokedex out, and the screen displayed a much clearer image, depicting a spherical owl standing on just one foot.
"Hoothoot! Type: Air. It has a perfect sense of time. Whatever happens, it keeps rhythm by precisely tilting its head in time."
"Huh! I'll be sure to catch one of those soon!" he replied. "Now is probably a good time to set up camp. Cherrygrove is still another few hours' walk, and those things don't seem too dangerous."
"You said it, Jimmy," said Mesprit. I'm feeling a little sleepy myself."

Making the rest of his way to town, Jimmy noticed Mesprit wander to a small tree containing round, blue fruits resembling oranges.
"What're you do--" he asked, just before two ripe fruits came down his way.
"These might just be useful in battle. Pokemon know how to use them, so why don't you try giving one to Totodile?"
Considering what his Pokedex said, the boy looked down to face the reptile. Lest she literally bite the hand that would feed her, he took a few steps back, and knelt down to place one of the fruits on the ground.
"Here, this is yours," he said, taking a few steps more back. "Don't eat it right up. You're gonna need it in battle."
The Pokemon walked over, picked it up, and did just as she was told.
"Good. Now, use it wisely, and I've got another one for you."
-----
The first thing Jimmy did upon reaching Cherrygrove was visit a PokeMart. There, he checked out what he knew were TMs. There were nine different disks in all, each with a number corresponding to the move it contained, but few of them looked like anything Totodile would be able to learn, and even those weren't the kinds of moves he was looking for.
Besides, they were all 1,000 Poken each. Jimmy only had P3,000, which was just barely enough to buy some healing supplies and have some left over.
Upon leaving the store, he drew out his PokeWalker, and read the instructions as he walked.
Place a full PokeBall inside each chamber, and then select any location of your choice on the screen.
"Well, can't wait to fire this thing up!"
-----
"Caterpie! Type: Bug. For protection, it releases a horrible stench from the antennae on its head to drive away enemies."
"Weedle! Type: Bug/Poison. Its poison stinger is very powerful. Its bright-colored body is intended to warn off its enemies."
"Ledyba! Type: Bug/Air. It is very timid. It will be afraid to move if it is alone. But it will be active if it is in a group."
"Well," said Jimmy, putting his Pokedex away. "At least Caterpie and Weedle don't seem too fast."
He withdrew a Pokeball and enlarged it.
"Let's see if I can just..."
He pitched the ball, and...
"...catch one!"
...launched it at a swarm of yellow caterpillars with stingers on their heads and tails.
The one it landed on became a light-red plasma, which was promptly sucked into the ball. The ball in turn wiggled once... twice... thrice... and stopped.
"Ha-hahh!" he said, thrusting his fist and elbow outward, while Mesprit hovered over to retrieve the ball.
The pixie tossed it over with her tails, and Jimmy was quick to catch it before it landed.
"Now, let's try a Caterpie," he said.
-----
Upon capturing one, he then tried his hand at capturing a Pidgey once and for all. He drew out both his Weedle and his newly caught Caterpie, who each shot a stream of sticky silk at a stationary one. The bird, used to its role as predator, could only react too late as both attacks landed, preventing it from moving.
And a Ledyba was next.
-----
Still one shy of a full party and unable to find more species, Jimmy strode ahead and sought to battle someone instead.
An hour and a half down the road, he came across a house that he remembered passing with Marina. Previously, the two of them had already been focused on making their way to Mr. Pokemon's house for Professor Elm's parcel. This time, he was in no particular hurry, and since it stood out in the middle of nowhere, he thought it might be practical enough to pay a visit.
"You must be a Pokemon Trainer," said a bald, middle-aged man, upon answering the door. "C'mon inside."
The two of them made some small talk, which led up to an important point.
"Did you know that Pokemon become healthy by eating berries?" asked the man.
"Sure do," said Jimmy. "Mesprit told me on Route 29."
"Here, have an Oran Berry," said the main, handing one over to him. "It's good to regain strength after a hit."
"Thanks!"
"If you look outside my house, you can find a tree to shake more from. If anything's ripe on it, it'll fall right down."
"Thanks. I'll check it out."
-----
As it turned out, there weren't any ripe ones on it.
-----
"You there!" called Jimmy, upon spotting a kid wearing a blue baseball cap, a white t-shirt, and blue shorts. "You up for a fight?"
"I just lost, so I'm trying to find more Pokemon," said the youngster.
"So am I. I just need one of my own to learn a new move before I can get my hands on any. How about it?"
Did the older boy just say "new move"? It occurred to the child that maybe he could improve his own if he could get them to learn something.
"One on one!" he said.
"You said it!" Jimmy then drew out one of his PokeBalls. "Totodile, now's your chance!"
Out came the little blue alligator, ready for battle.
"Go! Rattata!" said the other trainer.
Out came a small purple rat, equally ready.
"Scratch!" commanded Jimmy.
"Quick Attack!" commanded the youngster.
Rattata managed to land the first hit in just a split second, but Totodile proved stronger with her claws.
"Again!" both Trainers shouted.
Rattata struck Totodile again, but she was still kicking and landed another blow with her claws. The rodent started to look worse for wear.
"Rattata, come back!" shouted Jimmy's opponent, firing a light-red beam from his PokeBall's button and sucking Rattata back inside as the same kind of energy.
"Great job, Totodile!" said Jimmy, while his Pokemon finally feasted on her berry. "Here's another one," he continued, handing her the other one from Route 29.
"You're pretty tough!" said the young boy. "What's you're name?"
"Jimmy."
"I'm Joey. Could I get your phone number? I'm a rookie too, so it would be a good motivator if I get to rematch with you sometime."
-----
Not much further down, another battle ensued between Jimmy and another kid. This time, Totodile didn't fare so well as a Pidgey landed four consecutive tackles on her, the fourth one particularly critical.
"Totodile, come back!" shouted Jimmy, recalling her, before sending another ball out. "Go! Weedle!"
Immediately, his opponent knew that melee was off the table. At level 2, the bird wasn't yet capable of Gust, which it would have used already if it was. His only other Pokemon was another Rattata, which didn't know any non-contact moves. As a young kid, he couldn't always afford more antidotes, and this being the middle of a route, there were no nearby PokeCenters. Thus, he had to save whatever antidotes he did have for an emergency.
And so, he forfeited.
-----
Another battle, this time against a kid wearing a straw hat and carrying a bug-catching net. Totodile found herself against a Caterpie, which proceeded to unleash a horrible stench, cover her in a stream of gooey silk, and then roll forward in a wheel to slam her. She could barely move, let alone swing her claws at the bug.
And so, Jimmy recalled her and sent out Weedle once again, scaring the bug-catcher into forfeiting just like his previous opponent.
-----
"There's no way I'll be able to take on a gym like this," said Jimmy, after parting with his opponent.
He eventually crossed into Route 31, passed a plateau with an opening, and came across a pond in which to let his Pidgey and Ledyba wash off the silk from earlier on.
While the two Pokemon bathed the stickiness off, Jimmy released his other Pokemon from their balls to do as they please, before taking his clothes off to take a dip. Totodile, being a water Pokemon, strode into the water with him, and Mesprit kept a watchful eye on her to ensure his and his other Pokemon's safety.
There were no particularly dangerous Pokemon already residing in the pond, mostly just Magikarp and Poliwag.
"Well," thought Mesprit. "This seems like a better place than any for his first whole day unclothed. Not many people, a pond to swim across, and a particularly dark cave in that rock formation back there. We can come back here tomorrow."
-----
Emerging from the water and getting dressed again, Jimmy then shook a total of four pink pointy fruits from a nearby tree, and distributed one to each of his Pokemon barring Totodile.
Just as he withdrew his Pokemon into their balls, he noticed then some small yellow plant Pokemon with leaves for its arms and roots for its body and legs.
"Bellsprout" his Pokedex said. "Type: Grass/Poison. If it notices anything that moves, it immediately flings its vine at the object.
"Alright!" said Jimmy, fists in the air. "One of those is mine, and I'm gonna try that thing out once and for all!" He then pointed at one of them "Pidgey, tackle one of those things and distract it!"
The bird Pokemon flew forward and dive-bombed one, only for it to sidestep out of the way. The plant locked its gaze on her, and extended one of its roots to strike with.
"Fly around!" Jimmy commanded.
As Pidgey circled around her prey, Jimmy then drew out two of his other Pokemon.
"Caterpie, Weedle, go!"
He threw them in different directions.
"Both of you, String Shot!"
The two bugs successfully caught the plant off-guard, allowing Pidgey to home in and knock it over.
"Pokeball, go!"
The Bellsprout was covered in too much stickiness to evade Jimmy's last ball. The orb met its target, and in it went. The Trainer's party was now complete, and he summoned his Pokemon back into their balls
Upon taking out his PokeWalker, he then inserted one of his Pokemon at random into each space. A screen then lit up, presenting the following options:
Refreshing Field
Noisy Forest
Hoping for a change in scenery, the boy selected the latter. His surroundings changed to what looked more like a jungle than a forest.
He drew out his remaining full ball, and out came... Caterpie. Needless to say, the bug was taken aback by its suddenly different surroundings, looking around back and forth before turning to its Trainer.
-----
As Jimmy and Caterpie walked through the forest, they spotted all manner of different Pokemon than he had come across so far. Too bad he had already filled up all his PokeBalls; he'd need to get some more in the next real-world town. But then again, he also needed more Pokemon than one in order to contend with each Pokemon he caught in the real world, and the ones here, including Bellsprout, were known predators to Bug Pokemon like Caterpie, as his Pokedex would have him know.
"Spearow," his Pokedex emitted. "Type: Air. It flaps its short wings to flush out insects from tall grass. It then plucks them with its stubby beak."
"Venonat. Type: Bug/Poison. Its eyes double as radar units. It catches and eats small bugs that hide in darkness."
"Hey... Caterpie?" said the boy, looking down, only to notice a fragment of green stone of some sort.
"Oh, what's this?"
He picked it up and examined it. One side had rounded corners around three straight lines, clearly identifying the object as having once been rectangular. However, the other side was broken inward, and even sported a crack.
"Is this part of an old civilization? Guess I should take this somewhere."
-----
It wasn't until dusk in the real world that Jimmy would re-appear before Mesprit.
"Took you long enough," said the pixie.
"Bored waiting for me?" asked the boy.
"Bored? Of course not. My brothers and I spend our whole lives each watching over a lake. We are guardians, y'know."
"So what're you complaining about, then?"
"Because we've barely gotten started on our journey, and already, you've just spent hours in some other part of the world. The fate of the world is kinda depending on you and the others right now."
"Fate of the world?"
"It's complicated, so I'll explain as we go along, but for now, let's just say that Team Rocket is going to be the least of your worries."
"Okay, whatever. Anyway, check all this out that I found in the jungle!"
Along with the green shard, Jimmy showed Mesprit a small pile of powder and two round red berries with twirled green stems.
"That stuff here," said Mesprit, pointing to the energy powder. "It's super-bitter, and you should only give it to your Pokemon as a last resort."
"Guess I could've used a tip there. What about that green thing here?"
"A shard. I'm sure Uxie would know what they used to be, but we could probably ask him when we all meet back up in Sinnoh. They don't seem to have any practical use today, but there are people who like to collect them for some reason. Anyway, Violet City's just up ahead, but maybe we should camp out here for today, whaddya say?"
"Yep. Tomorrow's a big day!"
