**Author's Note** Hello all and thank you for following along. Here there will be a few more introductions as we get a better look at some of the original characters I have come up with. Furthermore we’ll see a familiar face from the first series who will lead us into future action to come.
On an additional note, there is a curious detail regarding dead bodies in the series. When someone dies their body gets sucked up into the soul that is left behind instead of leaving a corpse. That won't happen in my story, everybody leaves a corpse whether you're human, Kishin, or a Witch. Even if it's not accurate to the world, that's how I'm writing this story.

Chapter 2 - Oddballs Connect
Every student in the Not Class Beta Room stared at the chalkboard in surprise. Their teacher was late to arrive but written in large letters on the board was, “E. A. T. E. N.” Students turned to each other as they entered the room but none of them had any clue as to what it could mean.
In the front of the room a brunette girl stood with her hands resting on her hips. “Hmmm.” She had been trying to analyze the message but was having little success. Her peach dress ruffled as she turned side to side trying to contemplate the acronym.
“Sit down Katrina.” Another voice called to her from the doorway. Turning her head she saw a tall dark skinned boy who was about the same age as her. He wore a green checkered shirt with three quarter athletic pants. His hair was in dreads which were tight to his scalp. He had a thin pair of glasses hanging on his chest by a string around his neck.
“Damien!” She shouted happily at seeing him. She had always felt closer to him than the other students because he was the only Not student who was also fifteen.
He didn't seem to be sharing her enthusiasm though. “If you stand there the whole time we wait for the professor it will be a distraction as I try to read.” He announced coldly.
Katrina wasn't phased though, already being used to his uptight attitude. She leaned forward and wrapped an arm around his neck. Laughing she said, “Oh stop being such a grouch! Come over here and help me discern this!” She said while pointing to the message on the board.
While looking up from still being in a headlock Damien whined, “Ugh, could you let go please? It looks to me something related to the Eat class I would guess but I don't know what the rest could mean. Maybe it's a pop quiz or something?” He struggled to free himself but Katrina was strong for a girl.
It was just then that another voice broke their attention. “Could you two knock it off please?” Damien and Katrina both looked to the rows of seats. One of their classmates was sitting looking very annoyed at the them. She was a pale girl with short pink hair. She wasn't quite overweight but her pear shaped figure didn't do her any favors. She had wide hips which would have looked attractive if not for how awkwardly it paired with her flat chest. “I don't like the idea of a pop quiz to be even mentioned! So if you could please take your seats and wait like the rest of us I would appreciate it!”
“Sorry Hillary.” They both said in unison. Katrina released Damien and he walked to his seat while making sure his reading glasses had not become bent.
Afterwards, two other boys stepped into the classroom. They were both caucasian but were tanned very dark. They had sandy brown hair just passed their ears. They both wore a dark yellow tank top with red pants and a black Death City armband. They were identical twins and the only real difference between them was that one walked with his fingers pointed straight while the other walked with his fists closed tight. One turned to the other stating, “Look Brother, there is something written on the board.” Then the other turned to the first replying, “Yes Brother, I see that but I do not know what that acronym means.”
Hilary was the first to smile saying, “Good morning Brothers.” The rest of the class just waved to them in acknowledgment. The pair returned the smile in perfect unison. Hilary had always found them to be interesting because they never went by their actual names. They only referred to one another as ‘Brother’ and eventually it caught on with the other students. Additionally, Hilary had also been a little attracted to them because they were twins.
That was when they all started hearing a curious sound from the hallway. It sounded like metal squeaking, as if something were rolling on wheels very quickly. The students looked to each other and then back to the door. Then they all saw a man try wheeling himself into the classroom on a rolling chair but the wheel caught on the base door frame sending him crashing to the ground. He had on a white lab coat and had a wide pair of glasses over his eyes. While he laid upon the ground several students commented about how there was a screw skewered through his skull. He then began speaking without even standing which definitely made all of the students feel uneasy about this individual. “Good morning class. My name is Doctor Stein and I am here to E.A.T.E.N. all of you.”
Immediately Hillary screwed, “AHH! He's a monster with a screw in his head and he is here to eat us all!”
Stein chuckled while still laying upon the ground but then replied, “Sorry, but I didn't mean eaten like that. I apparently arrived to class two hours early when I wrote that upon the board.” He pointed to the acronym. “The Especially Advantaged Talent Entrance Narration.” Several of the students looked confused, now having more questions than answers.
But then Stein was interrupted by a sarcastic tone calling out from the doorway. “That doesn't really carry well. I think you just wanted to write a creepy message on the board to freak students out.” The class watched as Rayne appeared and pushed Stein's chair the rest of the way into the classroom for him. Katrina scowled at seeing him but the rest seemed indifferent.
“You're late to class Rayne.” Stein said as he lifted himself into his chair.
The dark haired boy just smiled and took his seat. “No I'm not. I was just waiting for you in the hallway. You rode right passed me. So I'm late... but he certainly is.” He said and then pointed towards the door as the student he saw running earlier finally rushed in.
A scrawny blond boy ran into the class panting heavily. “Ahh, I'm sorry! I'm, huh, my alarm, huh, didn't wake me, huh, and…!” He tried to explain but Stein just raised his hand to stop him.
“It’s alright. Just calm down and catch your breath before you hyperventilate.” He looked the boy over noticing how frail he seemed. He didn't appear to be more than about twelve years old. He wore a long sleeved, white DWMA shirt with black shorts. His blond hair was curly and he had blue eyes which were looking panicked now. “Don't worry, we got a late start so I can forgive you for being tardy this once.”
“Really?!” He said hopefully with a grateful smile on his face.
Stein nodded but then grinned sadistically. “Yes but if I ever find you late to class again, ...ever… I will dissect you to find out why your body seems to get so out of shape when you run.”
“WAHHHH?!” He screamed in disbelief and terror.
Quickly Katrina rushed from her seat and placed her hands over the boy's shoulders. “Come on Michael, let's sit down.” The terrified student was quivering and nodded as he followed where the older girl led him.
“Can we get on with it?!” Rayne called out rudely from his seat in the middle of the class.
After this Damien decided to follow up but in a much more professional manner. “Yes Doctor Stein. What exactly is the Especially Advantaged Talent Entrance Narration?”
The doctor adjusted his glasses and began, “The E.A.T.E.N. is designed as a way for students to proceed from the Not class to the Eat class. It is an introduction to the different lessons and responsibilities of Eat students that members of these Not classes might not be aware of. Even though a student is capable of remaining in the Not Class for several years, the intent is for all students to eventually move to the Eat classes at their own pace. However a student may be forcibly transitioned if they are too skilled or become too old for the beginner classes.” Katrina and Damien looked to each other, being the only older students in the class. Stein continued saying, “I was asked by your teacher to give you the narration for how the process goes.”
“I don't know, Dr Stein.” Hillary stated hesitantly. “The advanced classes? I'm not sure some us are ready for that.”
He then raised up his hands sympathetically. “Not to worry, this is only a lecture. No students are being forced into transition, at least not today anyway. I'm just here to make sure that you kids are well informed.”
A little more politely now Rayne called out, “Go ahead Doctor Stein. Being able to advance sounds like fun.”
Their lecturer peered up at him and said, “The first thing I'll have you know is that to proceed to the Eat classes you must first be formally paired between Meister and Weapon.” Now Rayne scowled as he had alienated himself from every Weapon in his class. Looking to the rest of the students now, Stein said, “As you are all aware the DWMA trains Meisters to hunt down Witches as well as lost souls who have become Kishin eggs. What some of you might not have been taught yet is that for each Weapon, when a Meister and their partner defeat 99 kishin eggs and one witch they gain the power to grow their strength into a proper Death Scythe that may be wielded by Lord Death himself.”
Katrina raised her hand asking, “Sir, how does that work exactly? How does a Weapon turn into a Death Scythe?”
Swiveling in his chair Stein answered, “I'm glad that you asked that. It isn't just enough to defeat 99 kishin eggs and one witch. You need to take their power into you by eating their souls that are left behind when you defeat them.”
There were now many stunned faces in the classroom and a loud shouting came from the two tanned boys in the back of the class. “What?! You want Brother and Brother to become cannibals?!” Then they looked at each other. “Brother, I want us both to become strong. But I don't know if I can eat people to do it.” Then they joined hands as their muscular arms flexed even though they were still just kids. “I feel the same. But if it is for you Brother, then I will do anything.” As this was happening Hillary looked up, sighing with adoration for them both. Much to their surprise though, an glowing arrow made of spirit energy suddenly shot into the side of their heads. “AHHHHH!” They both screamed in unison as the wound began to bleed.
“Idiots.” Damien said before lowering his arm that had been transformed into a bow. “We aren't expected to EAT PEOPLE. That would make us Kishins. However when we kill people who have become Kishin eggs we can then eat the spirit energy left behind and the same goes for witches. Isn't that right Dr. Stein?”
The professor at the front of the class lifted his glasses back up the bridge of his nose. “That's right Damien. And please don't injure other students unless you become a teacher at the academy.”
“What, what?!” Katrina yelled in surprise.
“Moving on…” Stein deflected. “Now I want all of you to open your books to page 364 of the DWMA guidebook for the section entitled ‘advancement.’”
- Later that Afternoon -
Rayne sat alone in the cafeteria as was normal for him at lunch time. He watched as the other students from different classes banded together in their little cliques. He leaned back in his chair drinking from a straw while his mystery sandwich of the day sat half eaten. Katrina sat a few tables down talking to Damien. Meanwhile he noticed Michael sitting at the next table over staring at Katrina nervously. Elsewhere the Brothers were trying to console a very depressed looking girl from the alpha room of the Not classes. “How could I have not known that?! I'm such a dummy!” She cried loudly. She had black hair worn in pigtails to the sides and she was sporting a generic DWMA black dress. In addition to the Brothers there were two other girls sitting with her as well.
“There, there, it will be okay. Now we know for the future.” Said one girl in a long poofy dress. The other girl wearing very short shorts and seemed to be rubbing her shoulders but it didn't appear to be helping.
“But the year before last we ALREADY defeated a witch! I didn't know that I was supposed to eat the soul! Why didn't Akane or Clay tell me that?! Those stupid jerks!” She yelled slamming her first to the table. She looked to her friends mumbling, “D-do you think we can get it back?”
Rayne chuckled to himself. “Wow, that's tough. She isn't taking the E.A.T.E.N. news well at all. Didn't like half her class already advance last year though? How could she be so behind?” He wondered, but then decided to forget about it because he didn't actually know the girl after all.
“Um, excuse me... “ Rayne was surprised when someone spoke to him. “I'm sorry, I'm not good at dealing with stuff like this… but I'm learning. Would it be okay if I sit with you?” Glancing up he saw a rather androgynous looking boy standing before him. He had short pink hair in a messy cut. He worn a black, tunic that fit him like a tube dress over his wiry body. Rayne noticed that his silence seemed to be making the boy cross his knees and bit his teeth nervously.
“Sure, I don't mind.” He said to put the boy at ease.
“Wow, really? You mean it? Well, okay then.” He said before sitting down across the table in front of Rayne. “Sorry for my hesitation, I was just surprised. You're in the advanced classes, aren't you?”
Suddenly the boy looked nervous again, “Oh, is that a problem?”
Rayne chuckled and shook his head. “You're kinda jumpy, aren't you?”
He looked down as if he were sorry for something. “Yes, I am. I try to get along with others… but sometimes I just don't know how to deal with things.”
Rayne thought for a moment before responding with, “Have you ever considered how that might be a good thing?” It was clear that his question had surprised the boy so he decided to explain. “You don't hide it well when you're nervous, that's clear. But if you're talking to someone else who might also be feeling anxious, it could help them because they'll know that they aren't alone in feeling unsure of themselves.”
“Huh. I never thought of it like that before. I suppose I could see how that makes sense.” He commented while holding up a finger.
Rayne smiled because the boy didn't even seem to notice how he wasn't feeling nervous in front of him any longer. “My name is Rayne. Pleased to meet you.” He said while stretching out a hand. The other boy didn't seem to hesitate and even gave a smile has he shook it. “My name is Crona. Thank you for being so friendly with me.”
Rayne noticed a couple others from his class staring at him curiously now. “Well believe it or not, I'm a pretty friendly guy. I like hanging out with others, but I'm just a little different. I don't connect to others well. That makes them think I don't want them around which isn't actually the case.”
Crona looked to him like he was fascinated. “I can understand that. There really are a lot of ways to be different from others. I used to think that I would never be able to make friends. But then I learned that it just takes me longer.”
Now a new voice spoke from seemingly out of nowhere. “Of course there are different ways to be different, dummy!” Rayne's eyes went wide as he saw a small hand puppet looking creature form itself from out of Crona’s shoulder. “When are we going to go eat those murderous souls? I'm hungry!”
Crona spoke in a scolding voice even though he didn't sound very confident. “Ragnarok, don't be rude. I was talking to someone. We will go when I'm ready to.”
But ignoring his statement completely the figure shouted, “But I want to go now! Look, that brat Maka already said you're ready so that means you're READY! I want to GO!” The small thing yelled as if starting to throw a tantrum.
“Ragnarok, stop yelling! You're going to cause a scene! I don't think that I could deal with drawing that much attention!” Crona scolding, sounding as if he were getting upset.
“Hey…” Rayne called out which broke the tension between the two. He looked right at Crona and gave him a smile. “Don't worry about it. If that happens I'll tell people to mind their business for you.” Crona looked at him very surprised but pleased nonetheless. “So you're that Meister who has a Weapon inside their body?”
Crona nodded. “Yes, this is Ragnarok. He is a Demon Sword made of black blood that was poured into me by a witch. We used to be evil but now we're both good.” He sounded as if he were really proud of himself as he said this.
His partner gave a different reaction though. “Hey dummy! What are you doing?! You don't even know this guy! Don't tell him all about us!” Then Ragnarok reached out with little arms to poke Crona’s face.
Before this could go on though Rayne leaned forward and said, “I think that's wicked cool. A Demon Sword that changed sides? That's pretty badass.” He ended with a grin that he held for show.
Crona and Ragnarok looked back and forth from him to each other. “Really, you think so?” Crona asked.
“Eh, I guess this guy is alright then.” Ragnarok said and settled down. “Anyone who thinks I'm badass has to be at least a little bit okay.” He said before starting to meld back into the boy. “But I'm still hungry! Go hunt some evil souls right now!”
“Okay, okay!” Crona yelled until his Weapon was no longer visible at all. Then he turned back to Rayne giving an uneasy smile.
Rayne just smirked to put him at ease and said, “Crona… a guy as cool as you can come have lunch with me anytime you want.” Then he gave a thumbs up to really emphasize his point.
“Really, you mean it?” Crona said with an excited smile.
Rayne nodded. “Yup. Don't feel pressured if you're busy or have something else to do. But if you're free we can have lunch together or if you see me in the halls you can say hi to me all you want.”
“Wow, gee. Thank you, I will.” Crona said and then the two enjoyed a comfortable peace as they ate their lunch together. Several Not students looked surprised to see Rayne sitting with someone who was actually enjoying his company. The two laughed a couple times together as the older student told Rayne all about what his classes were like.
Not long after they finished eating the two were walking together through the academy. “Hey Crona, is there something that you need help with?” Rayne asked him now that he saw there weren't so many people around.
“Hmm, what do you mean Rayne?”
“Well… Feel free to tell me if it's none of my business but it seems like you're supposed to be doing something right now that you are avoiding because you don't really want to.”
“Oh, that.” He paused and stopped walking to lean against the wall instead. “Well, we advanced students are supposed to take jobs to hunt witches and Kishin eggs. I've gone on a few with my other friends but I've never done a mission on my own yet. I'm nervous about going by myself but Maka wants me to go without any others helping me this time.”
Rayne thought for a moment, remembering something that he recently was told by a friend as well. “What is the mission?” He saw Crona smile as if sharing this burden with him was helping Crona to open up.
“Out on the west coat there is a town where a couple of murders have happened in a memorial park. The killer strikes at night and it's only been gangsters who have been killed so far. But the nature in which they were cut up suggests that a Kishin Egg is responsible. Not many have died yet so the killer shouldn't be very powerful. It's supposed to be only a one star mission. That's why I was told that there was no reason for a team of Meisters to go.”
Rayne smirked as he asked, “So what exactly did your friend say to you? What were their words?”
He thought for a moment. “Uhh, well, Maka said that I need experience in standing on my own in a fight. That she didn't want me asking anyone from our class for help.”
Crona was surprised when Rayne immediately threw his arm around him. “Alright, then it's settled. I'll go with you!”
“HUH?!” Crona gasped.
“Think about it. You were told not to ask anyone from your class for help. Well, I'm not in your class and you aren't the one asking. Not students can't accept missions on their own and all you really want is company. It would be good for me to see an advanced student in action and during the actual fighting I'll stay out of your way unless you really need my help for some reason. So how ‘bout it?”
Crona stood there thinking for a moment but then Ragnarok poked just part of his head out of Crona’s arm. “It makes sense to me. Want to show this twerp how it's done?”
Rayne gave him a smile and Ragnarok gave him a nudge. After that Crona seemed to cheer up and said, “I would really like that Rayne. Okay, let's go!” Rayne then gave a high five to both Crona and Ragnarok making them all laugh.
**Author's Ending Note** Yes the E.A.T.E.N. is completely made up by me. It's just a plot device to move the story along. It will come up again later.
Haha yes, for those who caught it that was a homage to Snape when Stein told the class to turn to page 364. Just an Easter egg for fun.
Alright so Rayne makes his first official friend from the Eat Classes. Crona was always a favorite character of mine. The Not oddball and the Eat oddball are banded together for a mission. But when Tsubaki told Rayne to go on missions with other Meisters this surely isn't what she had in mind.
