She was always so cheerful and glad to see either one of them. Despite being timid and clumsy, she always wore a smile. Kneeling on the ground, Homura delicately placed a flower on a fresh burial mound, the resting place of his beloved Rinrei. Tsuki stood behind him, she could see his shoulders tremble as he fought back tears. She took in a deep breath, silently wiping away the tears streaming down her face, the void of her dear friend, who did not deserve death, consuming her thoughts.
——————————————————————————————
500 years ago, despite Tsuki’s extensive stealth training, she would frequently bump into Rinrei throughout Heaven. She was a sweet goddess who believed in the best from others while being scolded for being unable to complete even the simplest of tasks.
Outside of her mother and uncle, no one in Heaven showed any such kindness towards Tsuki due to being a half-breed, a heretic, an abomination amongst the Heavens. Kindness was something Tsuki wasn’t used to as she was taught to be overly cautious and not trust anyone. Something about Rinrei was different from everyone else, something pure.
Through her, Tsuki met another god, Homura. Given that he had one golden eye just like her, Tsuki knew immediately he must’ve been locked away until now. A fate she would have faced had it not been for her uncle. The three became inseparable and shared many quiet afternoons sneaking down to the Lower World to this same open field filled with flowers, flowers that were Rinrei’s favorite thing about the Lower World.
For the gods to punish her by reincarnating her as a human...the void of Rinrei’s inevitable death as a mortal left both of them heavy with the weight of her absence.
——————————————————————————————
So much happened since they had parted ways, many questions left unanswered while raising questions with regards to what happened in Heaven when they last saw each other. Reuniting upon hearing news of Rinrei’s death was not something any of them imagined.
Homura gently kneeled down at the head of the mound, placing a hand lightly on the flowers before leaning in and kissing a single petal. A symbolic last kiss for the first woman he genuinely loved and who returned his feelings.
Knowing there was nothing further she could do for him, Tsuki silently said her final farewell to Rinrei, turning on her heels as she left Homura to mourn for his love.
•
Centuries later, Tsuki wondered what happened to Homura afterwards. She was never able to get in contact with him, and it seemed like he didn’t want to be found. He had sent her that letter which ended with him stating he would come to her for an answer. She wanted so badly to join Homura right away but had no way of contacting him.
Tsuki strode around the main room of her dwelling, the room was well lit with torches set in ornate holders. She was deep in thought, contemplating about how to retrieve the scroll in the area Naneko had pointed to in the desert. Tsuki was going to have to set out early in the morning or at night to avoid the brutal heat.
The potted plants throughout the room began to move; someone was on her property. Tsuki made her way over to the seeing pool and grazed her hand lightly over the surface. The torn jasmine petals still had some life in them as they began to spin until the figure of a man began to form within the surface of the water.
“Homura,” she whispered, not expecting to see him. Tsuki hurried excitedly out of the room and towards the front doors, throwing them open before he had reached the top of the stairs.
“Tsuki,” he greeted her with a smile and a nod. Tsuki felt her blood warm, a light blush forming on her cheeks. “It is so good to see you, again.”
“I feel the same, Lord Homura.”
“Please,” he started, “Tsuki, we are friends. I did not come to you for formalities. I came to you as an equal.” Tsuki gestured for him to enter.
“Of course, Lord Homura. Tea,” Tsuki asked. Homura sighed as he grasped her by the arm, pulling her in close.
“Tsuki,” he began, his voice was low and breathy. “I will get right to the point,” he continued, “I came for your answer regarding my letter.”
“Yes,” she replied, “if it means big changes in Heaven, I will help you.” He stared deeply into her eyes, and she felt herself getting lost in thoughts of him being so close to her like this.
“I am grateful for your help, my dear,” Homura continued as he released her arm, “and if you don’t mind, I would love a cup of tea.” Tsuki smiled and gestured for him to follow her to the main room.
Tsuki brewed the two of them a pot of oolong tea and made her way back to a small coffee table adorned with two chairs. As she placed one cup in front of Homura, Tsuki took to the chair next to him and informed him about the scripture Naneko found in the desert.
“How will you retrieve it,” Homura asked.
“After coming down to the Lower World,” Tsuki started, “I honed my abilities to manipulate the earth.” Tsuki gestured towards the edge of the table, a knot from the wood began to bulge and twist. A branch grew gradually from the wood, sprouting leaves before producing a flower. “While it will be difficult in the desert, I do have an idea of how to locate the scripture and retrieve the scroll.”
Homura looked at Tsuki with a smile, intrigued as to how she would be able to accomplish such a task. He reached a hand out to hers, gently grasping it in his own. “I have faith that you will claim it.” Tsuki’s heart jumped as she froze, she was uncomfortable with Homura getting in her personal bubble but the part of her that was smitten with him would not allow her to snatch her hand from him.
“Of course I will,” she confidently replied. For the way her and her mother were treated, for the way she was manipulated into cultivating such unjust atrocities, she knew she wouldn’t be able to make such changes without Homura. Tsuki kept repeating to herself of her intentions to join him for this one goal rather than being overcome by her emotions as she shyly brought her eyes back up to his face, a soft blush on her cheeks.
Homura pushed himself from the table, finishing the last of his tea. “I hate to cut our reunion short,” he started as he placed the cup back down, “but I must take my leave. I have some things I need to coordinate with my associates who have also joined me in my quest.”
“Yes, sire, I understand,” Tsuki responded, though bittersweet at the reality of him leaving after finally reuniting.
“Again with the formalities, Tsuki,” Homura chuckled. He smiled at Tsuki, a gentleness in his eyes as he stood close to her as he leaned down, reaching for the silver locks that hung in front of her shoulder. He gently ran his fingers through her hair, bringing a few strands towards his lips. “I see you changed the part in your hair,” he commented, “why hide such ferocious eyes which house the mind of a skilled warrior behind such a beautiful ivory curtain?”
Tsuki was taken aback by the comment, her heart fluttering in her chest as his gaze pierced her. She was always made to feel ashamed about her mismatched eyes, hiding one or the other gave her comfort and, in a way, displayed a more intimidating front.
“I did not mean to make you uncomfortable, Tsuki,” Homura continued, her hair falling from his fingers as he straightened himself.
“N-No, not at all,” she replied, “it’s just, no one has ever made such a comment about my eyes before since I’ve kept them concealed all this time.” Tsuki crossed her arms, fidgeting with the edge of her arm band.
“I understand. If you feel so inclined, perhaps one day you will grace me with the privilege of seeing your eyes uncovered.” Tsuki felt her face warm up, aware that it was difficult to contain the blush that painted her face. “No pressure, Tsuki,” Homura continued, “It was natural curiosity to see such beauty.”
Tsuki turned her eyes away, embarrassed by the compliment. “Th-thank you,” she replied meekly.
“I will return soon. I look forward to your success out in the desert.”
Tsuki nodded in response as Homura made his way back towards the entrance. Tsuki accompanied him to the door and watched him leave, sighing lightly to herself as she stared at the broad back displayed to her. She delicately played with the bangs hanging at the side of her face; she was a half-breed. Except for her uncle, no one else trusted a half-breed; especially not one that was half goddess and half demon.
——————————————————————————————
Tsuki didn’t know much about her father other than he was a demon, he had some position in Heaven, and he deserted her mother during the pregnancy. This may have been why her mother was overly attentive and checking daily to see if she was the wearing power limiters disguised as arm bands. Tsuki’s mother crafted these specifically to cloak the demon blood running through her veins. Her mother also made sure Tsuki covered her red eye at all times; the only trait that was a clear indication she was half demon.
Tsuki knew her mother loved her unconditionally, but it almost seemed like she was using that love to cover up the emptiness she felt from being abandoned by the man she wholly devoted herself to. She taught Tsuki how to be stealthy and undetectable along with some basic self defense in case she was ever discovered as being half-demon.
As Tsuki grew older and into her teenage years, the stress of constantly worrying about her daughter and the feeling of emptiness left in her heart by her husband became so overwhelming, Tsuki’s mother fell ill. Stress was one thing, but there were no tonics to ail the damage done to a broken heart. It was known throughout Heaven that Tsuki was a half-breed, but no one knew she was half demon. Her yellow eye was a clear indication that she was a heretic and as such, no one in Heaven would adhere to Tsuki’s pleas for help. She was just seen as a lesser god amongst the rest of the population.
It was during this time that her uncle took them both in under his care. He wasn’t really Tsuki’s uncle, but he had befriended the two when Tsuki was really small. He knew that Tsuki was half-demon and was the first one in Heaven to reach out to her mother and help them when everyone else sneered and spat hurtful curses at them.
Tsuki and her mother moved into her uncle’s multi-level home and her mother was assigned around the clock care. The doctors that frequently visited informed her and her uncle that Tsuki’s mother needed plenty of bed rest due to her declining health. Tsuki was grateful to her uncle knowing that he had her mother’s best interests in mind and had some of the best healers in Heaven living on the property to tend to her mother.
Her uncle was also just as caring as her mother; he would also frequently check to make sure she was still wearing her power limiters. The love and care he showed Tsuki and her mother eased her mind and also gave her time to focus on training offered by her uncle. On top of the basic self defense and stealth her mother taught her, he trained Tsuki in the way of combat fighting with both short and long range weapons.
Thanks to his growing reputation, her uncle was even able to get Tsuki permission to spar with some of the soldiers within Heaven’s army at the Jade Palace; but, of course, under the strict supervision of her uncle. Though she cloaked her full potential so as not to draw attention from the higher ups, it became clear to her uncle that Tsuki had become an assassin of high-rank, someone that dare not cross her or her family.
Tsuki became recognized for her skills, and her uncle was praised for his teaching methods. Such recognition even garnered him a promotion within the Heavenly Palace and thus more respect amongst the hierarchy. Once treated poorly like Tsuki and her mother, she was pleased to see her uncle being valued for the knowledge and guidance she knew he could provide to the higher officials and the Jade Emperor.

Clearing her mind of past memories, Tsuki finished filling two medium sized skins with water and packed a pouch with a few items for spells or other incantations. She sheathed a few small weapons just in case before determining she was ready for her mission in the desert. It was early in the morning, still bitterly cold out, but she wanted to at least map out the sector where the scripture was before the sun’s rays tickled the horizon.
After a few quick checks, Tsuki was satisfied with the rough coordinates she had mapped out. When she got to the area, she knew of a spell that would do the rest of the work for her. She dressed herself in preparation for the day’s high temperatures. Tsuki’s eyes trailed over the outfit she was to wear out in the desert. She glared at her reflection in the mirror as she looked herself up and down.
Her enchanted boots, which would prevent her feet from sinking into the sand, were not the problem. Tsuki had gone to one of the designers as recommended by Naneko for a custom outfit perfect for desert conditions. While she had submitted certain specifications, the outfit came with a little note from Naneko stating she had made some changes to the design, Naneko’s signature ended with a little doodle she made of herself giving a playful wink.
Tsuki clicked her tongue, thinking she felt ridiculous. The outfit was supposed to be in the style of a traditional Chinese dress, but made of more breathable material with high slits on each leg should she encounter an ambush. Instead, her outfit was a deep red crop top with a gold design and trim and a high waisted skirt with a gap high on her hips between the front and back of the skirt. A slight breeze and she’d be giving anyone nearby a free show.
“No wonder Naneko mentioned wearing a thong with this outfit would be best,” Tsuki said in a huff. “Just what was that damn woman thinking? I don’t have time to change.” Not wanting to waste anymore time, Tsuki grabbed her cloak, fastening it tightly around her neck as she headed towards the main door.
“You’ll be cool out in the desert,” Tsuki said in a mocking tone, “Of course I’ll be cool in the desert, Naneko, I’m wearing next to NOTHING!”
——————————————————————————————
“Tsuki,” her uncle firmly addressed her, snapping her out of idle thoughts and back to reality. That’s right! She had been summoned before her uncle.
“Yes, uncle,” she replied, straightening herself. When he called her into his study, she knew it was not a casual meeting. She hoped it wasn’t something that would take up much of her time. She loved her uncle, but she needed to meet up with Homura later that evening. Her uncle stood behind a large table stacked with mounds of papers and journals.
“I have another mission for you,” he began, “There is a goddess that has turned her back on Heaven. She has run away to the Lower World to join hands with a clan of...demons.” Her uncle curled his lip and scrunched his nose, emphasizing the last word in his sentence. Tsuki quirked a brow at the remark.
“I have been obtaining evidence for some time and it is clear they have been cultivating plans to commit treasonous acts against Heaven.” Her uncle made his way from around the table and approached her. “This mission is delicate and requires…precision,” he continued, “and it is essential this person be eradicated.”
“Yes, uncle, I understand,” Tsuki firmly replied. Her uncle stood close to her and leaned in, lowering his voice.
“As the target is a heavenly being, there is absolutely no room for error. When you proceed to the Lower World, be sure to use the banishing rifle.” Tsuki nodded, noting that while such a mission required her to use one of her least favorite weapons, she understood it was necessary for these sorts of rare assignments.
Handing her a folded map which documented where intel indicated her target would be located, her uncle leaned back, satisfied with her response. He dismissed Tsuki as she bowed her head and left the room.
Making her way back to her room, Tsuki locked her door before unlatching a hidden floor board where she stored a rifle that was specifically crafted for her. Bullets were not needed for this weapon as this weapon would allow Tsuki to channel her qi as ammunition. By removing her power limiters and exposing herself to such abilities, even for a brief period of time, meant she would be weak after reattaching her limiters; however using this rifle meant it was imperative that she never miss her target.
Against Heavenly beings, channeling her demonic qi ensured an immortal’s immediate death; the more concentrated her demonic qi, the more solid the impact the bullet would have. The force of her demonic qi invading the body of her targets would cause such a disruption in the immortal’s own energy that it would shatter the balance and deplete their life force. Packing a slim utility bag and strapping the gun in a back holster, Tsuki finished her preparations and left for the Lower World.
