Disclaimer: I do not own Overlord, or Warhammer, nor the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
All the preliminaries out of the way it was time to dig into the meat of the build, the new me. 595 points. A respectable sum that will allow me to become something truly extraordinary.
First thing is first- Origin. Drop in, coming into the new world as myself, was out right off the bat. The point was to make a new life, a fresh start, and that didn't include bringing my old body along for the ride. Substitute and extra were briefly temping, they would start me in the body of a current resident of the New World with access to their memories. I'd have a home, a history, possibly allies, and most importantly significantly more knowledge about the world then I currently possessed but there was one glaring problem- The person currently living that life. I would be essentially stealing their body and life, masquerading as them, lying to their family and friends day in and day out. That certainly conflicted with the morality principle, so reluctantly I discarded extra and substitutes.
That left only one option, but it was a great one. Possession. Instead of inhabiting an existing person already living their life the Company would provide a clone body with all of the appropriate powers and skills that the original possessed. The only downside was the fact that it came with no actual memories, but it was a price I was willing to pay to keep my morality intact. Besides, who knew what inheriting a life time of someone else's memories would do to my sense of self? Would I still be me if I had 30 years of another person's life shoved into my brain? With possession all I had to do was pay the proper points for the body and my new life could begin as almost anyone.
It was the worlds selection all over again. The majority of the characters I had never heard of. Sure, a lot of them were clearly gods or other divine figures, but the power of a god could vary pretty massively by setting. Selecting a random goddess could result in a situation where I was great at controlling water... and nothing else.
The prices varied immensely depending upon who I wanted to start as and how the system rated their "tier" of power. There were solid options as low as tier 5(20pts) - Hermoine Granger seemed to have a pretty wide skill set for tier 5.. But any of the high level foes would make a fine red mist of me before I had a chance to react. Psylocke at tier 6(50pts) seemed a bit low from some of the feats I knew her capable of.. but we had that fine red mist problem again. Rogue at tier 7(100pts) was a personal favorite, but with no mutant powers to absorb she seemed a bit lackluster. Atom Eve (7), wonderfully flexible but with the same vulnerabilities. Ultimately anything higher tier would be too many points, I needed to save enough to round out the rest of my build.
Hours later I had narrowed it down to three choices, and tried a variety of builds for each one.
Tifa Lockhart. Tier 7, 100 points. A classic. Aside from the practicality of it, the idea of actually becoming Tifa? It was hard to resist.
One major problem stood out. First, it wasn't clear exactly which version of her was on offer. She was a character who had massive variations in power depending upon how you interpreted the numbers and the displays of power in the story. If you base it upon late game numbers, and use the early displays of her power as a baseline, then she should be able to punch down a skyscraper without breaking a sweat. She could bring the dead back to life. Summon incredibly powerful magical creatures to fight for her. Use magic to melt just about anyone into a puddle of goo. Stop someone in time. On the other hand, if you use her displays of power in the story she is mildly superhuman and belongs more in the tier 5 category. Ultimately she was very tempting, but just not dependable enough.
Miss Martian. Tier 7, 100 points. She'd always been a favorite of mine. She had a wide variety of powers- Telepathy, telekinesis, insubstantiality, shape shifting, super strength, durability. A very strong contender. My biggest fear was that her durability wasn't quite on the tier that the New World would require, I needed someone that could stand toe to toe with level 100 foes and survive. Thrive even.
My fingers stopped their scrolling, a small smile crossing my lips, as I set eyes upon her. Miao Ying. A Celestial Dragon from the Warhammer Fantasy setting. Durability, without a doubt, check. The fantasy heroes were all inappropriately hard to kill and most of them were not dragons in human form. Warhammer dragons retained most of their power in human form. She had thousands of years of experience in battle and the physical skills that came along with that. She was a master of two of the winds of magic- Life and Yin. Life provided healing, protection and buffs, and some decent area of effect attacks that I could remember off the top of my head. Yin provided debuffing, concealing, its own range of buffing and protection magic, summoning, and even stronger area effect abilities. Her magic would be essential in large scale battles which were sure to crop up in the New World.
Aside from all that.. how cool would it be to be a fucking dragon? Surely that had a significant impact on my decision making, but happiness was one of the pillars too, wasn't it?
495 points remaining proved to be a generous allotment with all the bases that had been covered by my Origin. Talents were my first focus, to provide room to grow. Soul talent, pyschic talent, and martial talent provided a plethora of options for the future. Soul talent in particular provided the ability to learn magic, chi, or just about any mystic art at an unheard of pace- particularly if paired up with an instructor. Martial talent would allow my already prodigious combat skills to continue to grow, though I had a feeling thousands of years of combat experience were going to take awhile to build upon even with the enhanced rate. 30 points well spent.
Template stacking. This granted a tier 4, very weak, version of any characters powers that you would need to grow on your own over time. I locked in Scarlet Witch without hesitation. Her powers were just so damn cool, aside from being incredibly flexible and potential world shaking. Sure, at tier 4 I probably wouldn't be able to pull off more then a few parlor tricks- but I wasn't turning down the opportunity to find out, and to grow. 20 point bargain.
I also locked in Bright Shattered Ice, an elder Solar from the Exalted setting as my second template. Solar Exalted, the mythical super weapons created by the Gods to kill that which could not be killed. To make war on, and ultimately conquer, the very beings who created the universe and the Gods themselves. The Primordial beings who created shape, definition, time, and every other concept we know. The Gods created something greater then themselves, the Exaltation shards, and melded them with humanity who had the free will to make war on their creators. They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams and the Solar Exalted were created.
Solars were capable of, with enough training, essentially anything. Their focus was on perfection. Anything from swordplay to cut down mountains, to songs to incite love and loyalty, to being the best bureaucratic paper filer to ever live. No one Solar could do everything, but all of them could potentially do anything. Eventually the could develop incredible defensive abilities- For someone who had them all, with a small expenditure of essence(mana), they could simply ignore anything. A bullet was no different from a punch from Goku that could shatter universes. You simply denied realities ability to change you, and it didn't. Mind control, soul stealing, all the things I'd been afraid of should be manageable as a Solar. Of course it would take quite some time to grow those abilities, but I wasn't going to turn it away for only 40 more points.
A third template would cost 80 points, so I moved on to other options.
Next I set about picking my binding, the system only allowed one style per Contractor. These are the methods used to capture (read:enslave) those who the company wished me to collect and turn over to their market. There was a stamp that claimed anyone stamped, jewelry that turned its wearer into a submissive little sex pot, and more. I was determined to make minimal use of these, only on to make the world a better place, but one of the options in particular stood out as quite useful. Tantric Magic.. lets just say it- sex magic.
75 points dropped in there purchased the ability to work powerful sex magic from any distance as long as you had resonance- Some form of connection to the target. A strand of hair, a treasured possession, their cock inside of you, anything with a strong link. It could be used to capture like the rest, but there were many other options.. The majority of them instilling behavior, feelings, or worse.. but not all. The Art of Awareness even allowed the spells to be cast backwards in time! Very limited time travel for 10 freaking points! The option to correct my mistakes by controlling the actions of someone in the past was too good to pass up even if the idea of using sex magic to control others was more then a little gross.
The majority of my remaining points went into heritage, specifically Transhumanism- It allowed for incredible potential for growth. Compared to the power Miao Ying granted me it wasn't too valuable in the short term, but I was okay with that. The only downside was it was... complicated. Very powerful sounding but somewhat vague abilities that sound like they could be world defining eventually.
Roughly speaking, I understood the abilities as follows:
First Augmentation- Growing beyond the limitations of my mortal body I am becoming the embodiment of an element- which seems to be very generously defined. Anything from the typical elements, to concepts, to objects, to... Anything. The more specific the element the quicker you would grow in power but at the cost of a narrower set of power.
Call me corny, but I picked love as my element. It was broad with a variety of applications and it felt like something I could do some good with in the world- It wasn't just for capturing cute girls, but the world would be a better place with more love in it. With such a broad definition I knew I probably wouldn't be able to do much with it until I spent a good deal of time mastering it, but so be it.
Distributed Intellectual Devotions - Creating physical offshoots of my mind. They could study while I worked on other projects, administer to less important duties, or serve as a backup should my primary body be killed. By default they wouldn't have physical form, but my tantric summoning magic should be able to get around that easily enough by summoning up mindless bodies for them to inhabit.
Synaptic Revelation Kernel- An upgrade for Distributed Intellectual Devotions, most importantly providing my offshoots to be able to develop and master their own elements- Which grants me access in turn. This skill is the primary reason I decided upon Transhumanism as my heritage, it would over time give me a nearly limitless set of skills. Skills provided directly from the company, such as heritage skills, could not be negated, blocked, or absorbed. This was the path to true godhood.. eventually. After many decades or more of devotion.
Lures... I couldn't help myself. So I wanted to be supernaturally sexy, who doesn't? Sticky Fingers, to be a metaphorical Sex Goddess. Alluring Whisper, to have the sexiest voice of all time when I spoke just so. Love spot- breasts... Yeah, so I feel a little silly just thinking about it, but it made my breasts so sexy people would literally fall in love with me. Don't judge me.
When all was said and done I had hit exactly 0 points.
It was time. Excitement, fear, eagerness, anxiety, they all coiled through me as my finger drifting towards the finish build button. Everything went black.
