WOOT WOOT over 1,000 hits! Keep the reviews coming! I'm so happy. Also, I had a plot bunny in the Bleach section bugging me so I started a new fic there, but don't worry, I won't neglect this one! This is the first chapter of the third part. AFF doesn't divide sections like that but I do, so this section focuses more on the rest of the ikkou and how they get where they need to go. There's a little cameo from one our other favorite characters too. It assumes a pre-existing relationship (from another fic that's under the other pen name, Tsuzuki.)
Sanzo had not been summoned to speak with the three heads in some time. He’d been completely outraged that the kappa had tossed him on his ear and that had taken up most of his thoughts for a few days.
He just couldn’t see the sense in Gojyo’s denying him. Hakkai was gone, and the idiot stinking kappa chose now to be faithful? It made no sense! If Hakkai came back, Sanzo would have to arrest him. That was it, it was over for them all either way.
So how it was that Sanzo had lost two lovers over this thing? The only release he had left to him was his booze and his monkey and it pissed him off.
So when the Three Heads summoned him he thought it might be a welcome distraction for a change.
It wasn’t.
“Gengyo Sanzo, we bring you here because a matter of concern has arisen,” the female head said.
“We wish for you to investigate rumors of the Kusanagi’s appearance.”
“Do you know of the Kusanagi, Sanzo?”
“Is that not the great Grass Cutting Blade of Amaterasu?” Sanzo asked.
“It is the one. It has not been seen in years.”
“It was stolen from its shrine a long time ago.”
“We have reports that Seers all over Shangri-la have been having visions of the blade’s return.”
“We need you to confirm these rumors and retrieve the blade if it in fact still exists.”
“Do you know where this blade can be found?” Sanzo asked, groaning inwardly. It sounded like it might shape up to be a long mission. It was annoying how the aspects kept speaking to him in turns. Did all three always need to address him at once?
“Reports have come from the South West. We have nothing more specific than that.”
“We have reason to believe that it may be taken to the Spire of Amaterasu. You must not allow the blade to arrive there. This is of utmost importance.”
“Go to Amaterasu. Retrieve the blade and bring it here. We trust in you, Gengyo Sanzo.”
“Damn it damn it DAMN IT!” Sanzo kicked the table in his room over and sent the contents, ashtray included, across the floor. Goku watched him with mild interest.
“Goku, We’re leaving first thing in the morning.”
“Ha? Why? What did the heads say?”
“They are sending me on another mission,” he clenched and unclenched his fists at his side. “We get to go to a sordid little place called The Oasis. Its way the fuck out in the middle of a desert and its over run with youkai.”
“Sounds great. Why?”
“I have to get a stupid knife.”
“You’re going all the way out there for a knife?”
“Yup.”
“Doesn’t sound too hard.”
“Not until you realize that we don’t know where the fuck it is!”
“I thought you said it was at this Oasis thingy.”
“No, it’s going there. We have to find it first. First, I have to go dust off some old books and research it. I can’t find it if I don’t know what it looks like.”
Sanzo found the copy of the Kojiki- The Record of Ancient Things, that the temple maintained. It did not take long to find information about the Kusanagi. Also in the book were stuffed articles and cut outs of things relevant to the topics in the Kojiki. One of them was a drawing of the Kusanagi. Sanzo stared at it.
Sanzo couldn’t stop his hands from shaking. He felt the bile run up into his throat and he got heartburn. Burping sourly, he pocketed the picture and paged through the book.
The drawing was of Hakkai’s dagger- the one he had shown him just before everything erupted. Sanzo had held the fucking Kusanagi in his hands! It had twanged, vibrated almost, when he touched it. Had he known that then, he wouldn’t have to go on another journey. The irony was not lost on Sanzo. His own demon had placed it in his hands and he had not recognized it for what it was. The feeling of power running through the blade had impressed him. He’d recognized that it had been something- but this he couldn’t have foreseen.
What the hell was Hakkai doing with such an artifact? Hakkai had been attracted to it enough to spend all his available money on it and even do menial labor for it. What in the hells connection did it have to Hakkai?
Was Hakkai running across the country with the damn thing even now?
Sanzo fisted his own hair and moaned. “Hakkai, what did you get yourself into now?”
He went on to look up information about the Oasis. It was originally a mining settlement built at the nexus of an underground river system and vein of ore. The river surfaced in only that one place in the whole of the desert. It was in a deep valley protected by mountainous and rocky desert. It was difficult to get to. There were two ways in and out of the Oasis on opposing sides of the city.
It was originally owned and started by human pioneers who worshipped Susanoo- the Storm God. The ore they mined is the stuff they make limiters out of. Gems, minerals and metal with magical and mystical properties of all stripes were found in the dry earth. It became the source for raw materials to make all manner of amulets, talismans and even some types of potions. They say the place had its own aura and Qi.
The Order of the Storm God were the natural enemies of the worshippers of the Sun Goddess. The followers of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, had hired a youkai Lord to wrest the city from the Order of Susanoo. Although the control of it was supposed to have fallen to the worshipers of Amaterasu, and they had even built the great spire in her honor, in the end it was the demons who kept it.
The people of Amaterasu had formed an uneasy cohabitation with their demon usurpers that predated the Minus Wave. It still existed there to this day. The demons were willing and able merchants of the ore. Other secondary industries sprung up within the settlement and it was the demons who actually grew the place to the city it was today.
Somehow, the youkai there had escaped the effects of the Minus Wave. Sanzo figured it had something to do with the isolation of the place, and the presence of all that limiting ore.
“What a fucking nuisance!”
Gojyo had thought he’d seen the last of Sanzo. Sanzo had been so pissed off when he’d been shoved out on the porch, it made Gojyo laugh when he thought about it weeks later. Nothing like priest baiting to lift the mood.
When he saw the blond storming his way with a flummoxed Goku in tow he was not really sure what he was in store for. Sanzo looked pissed.
Gojyo had been sitting on his porch, having a smoke and enjoying his new found celibacy when Sanzo showed up.
“I have one question for you, water sprite,” Sanzo had said without preamble. “Did Hakkai take that god damned knife with him?”
Gojyo blinked. “Knife?”
“Yes, Yes, a knife! That one he showed us.”
“Oh, did you know he cleaned that pawnshop in exchange for that stupid thing? He’d been mooning over that for weeks.”
“Is that so. Well, I need it. Did he leave it here?”
Gojyo shrugged. “I haven’t seen it so he must have taken it. Sanzo, are we finding little excuses to come by? Is Sanzo-sama a little lonely? Poor little Sanzo-sama.”
“Can it, is it here or not?”
“Hey Goku!” Gojyo waived at him.
“Hey Gojyo!” Goku waived back enthusiastically.
Sanzo ground his teeth together. “No time for pleasantries, is it here?”
Gojyo shook his head. “Sorry dude, I haven’t seen it. If I do, I’ll be sure to pay you a visit.”
“Don’t, just give it to Goku.”
Sanzo stormed back off the way he came. “Hey, Sanzo, wouldn’t you like a drink?”
“Feh!”
“Sorry, Gojyo. We’re getting sent on a mission,” Goku said.
“So I won’t be seeing you around?”
“No. I think it’s really pissing Sanzo off. We might have to go someplace way out into the desert.”
“No shit. I take it I’m not invited.”
Goku brightened. “I’d sure like it if you could come!”
From farther down the road they both heard Sanzo bark “NO!”
“Man he has good hearing,” Gojyo commented.
“He-he- Seeya! Kiss Hakkai for me if he comes back!”
Gojyo winced. “S’okay, Monkey.”
Gojyo watched them leave. As ticked off a mood Sanzo was in, Gojyo had actually been happy to see him. He was lonely, the reason he was sitting outside despite the cold was he couldn’t stand the emptiness of the apartment all the time.
Gojyo blew out a whistle, “I’m pathetic,” he murmured to himself. He was feeling sorry for himself because Goku hadn’t hung around. “So pathetic.”
