Aspirations
Chapter 20
Aizawa felt himself hesitate as he stood by your door. He knew it was irrational; you weren’t likely to hurt him. As far as he knew he’d done nothing to provoke you the last couple of days either. Yet still he hesitated. The pro-hero stood in front of your door for a good thirty seconds before knocking. After everything, however, there was no answer. Dry eyes narrowed on your door as a hundred different thoughts went through his mind. It was already about six in the evening. You should have been back from work hours ago; potentially getting ready to cook dinner.
Aizawa pulled his phone out again. It was easy to see that it was nowhere near the latest model. That was fine; he was pleased with the fact that it had lived up to its indestructible claims after all the fights he’d been through. According to the gps, you were in the building. Aizawa frowned. If you weren’t back in your own dorm and you weren’t in the common area, where were you?
He got his answer as the elevator rang. You stepped out from a small group of girls. The scent of some perfume or another attacked him. Though he maintained a straight face, Aizawa really didn’t like the scented bomb you seemed to have lived through. It wasn’t your normal aroma and because of that it didn’t seem right. Especially the closer you got. Unfortunately he didn’t have the authority to tell you to shower. He ignored some of the female students from 1A as they looked on from the elevator. He waited until the doors closed before speaking.
“Endeavor was released today. Todoroki put in a request to attend a family dinner,” Aizawa spoke out as he slipped his phone away.
“Okay,” you said calmly as you started to open your dorm's door.
“You’re taking him.”
You stopped midway into your room. Your eyes widened as you turned back to look at him.
“What?”
The dark-haired man just nodded. “You offered to chaperone him.”
“Yeah, to the hospital and look how that turned out.”
“Did you want me to tell him you said no?”
You let out a breath. It was similar to a groan. You shook your head no; you didn’t want Aizawa to tell Todoroki that you’d denied the invitation or request. Whatever it actually was.
“Do I have time to shower?”
While it wasn’t summer, you still wanted to freshen up after the day. You’d spent a good portion of it with class 1B in their quirk training, some more with some clients, and the last two hours with some of the girls from 1A at the local bath store. Somehow during that last part you’d gotten scent bombed by a product that was being showcased. It had been hilarious at the time but you didn’t feel like being confined into a car smelling as strongly as you currently did.
At Aizawa’s slow nod you continued into your quarters. Funny thing was that you hadn’t expected Aizawa to follow you in. You thought he’d mosey off or something; maybe start on his patrols as it was already getting dark.
“What? Wanted to help me scrub my back?” You asked sarcastically before you realized what you’d said.
Thankfully with your back to him as he closed the door, Aizawa couldn’t see the “oh shit” expression on your face. The question was a joke of course but it didn’t seem like an appropriate one for a coworker, nor client even. Less so considering that he admitted to viewing you more as a child than an adult.
To try and cover your blunder, you only succeeded in making it worse. “Don’t worry. I’m a big girl; I can bathe myself and everything.”
You had never been so glad for a bathroom door in your life. You squeezed your eyes closed and narrowly resisted the urge to bang your head against the wall. What was wrong with you?
In your living room, where you’d left him, Aizawa shoved his hands into his pockets. He practically flopped onto your couch at that point. His mind ran rampant with thoughts about the shower. Ones you’d put there even though you hadn’t meant to. Just like you hadn’t meant to display your rounded backside for him earlier that day. He had no intention of telling you what had occurred either. Bad enough that Recovery Girl knew as it was. It was best he just pretended like nothing had happened.
You didn’t take very long to shower. Aizawa looked up from the couch to watch you take great strides across your room in your bathrobe. Slowly Aizawa leaned his neck back so that he could stare up at the ceiling very intently. Not that you noticed. You were trying to pick out something appropriate. What you noticed rather quickly was that you did not have enough adult-level clothes. At least not ones that seemed appropriate for a teacher-like position. You’d worn most of what seemed acceptable for your new role throughout the week. What you ended up settling on was a sweater dress in a flattering color and cut with a pair of warm leggings. All of which you put on in the bathroom.
Once dressed you walked back out towards where Aizawa was waiting. If you didn’t know any better you would say that he was praying. His arms were stretched out over the back of your small couch and he had his head tossed back so far that you could see his Adam’s apple. You tilted your head at the image he made; he looked pretty good splayed out voluntarily like that.
You tried to clean out your mind as you were going for the door. Aizawa stood up before you opened it up. You had a bad feeling that you weren’t the only one escorting Todoroki. Considering that Aizawa continued to shadow you all the way to Todoroki’s room, you were going to say that you were probably right. But you tried to ignore him as you knocked on Candy Cane’s door.
Todoroki didn’t make you wait long before he opened the door. “Time to go?”
You nodded and backed up. That way he could get out the door. You realized too late that you’d backed up into your living shadow. Aizawa had a gentle grip on your shoulders to steady you as you regained your balance and composure from the accident. You stayed quiet as you regained your composure. Though the embarrassed blush took forever to settle; not because of Aizawa but because of how climbsy you felt.
When you started in the direction of the gates to the school, Aizawa made a sound. Your shoulders tensed as you turned to look at him. He motioned towards an area not too far away from the dorms.
“A bus, really?” You asked in a dry voice.
The darkly dressed man just rolled his eyes. He started towards where the school vehicles were kept. Both you and Todoroki followed him to an area that had a couple different types of cars all lined up. All of them in black with blacked out windows. When Aizawa clicked the keys to unlock the car and turn off the alarm, you saw that it was a low profile, economic choice. Probably for the best; you didn’t want to draw too much attention given the state of things. But when you realized he wasn’t handing over the keys, getting into the driver’s seat instead, you got a little irritated.
To spite him in the slightest way, you held the back door open for Todoroki before walking to the other side and got in for yourself. If Aizawa wanted to continue the farce then you were going to pretend like he was the Chauffeur. He looked the part closely enough. Neither Todoroki nor Aizawa said anything about your little act of defiance. In fact the whole ride felt like one big silent joke. One that you didn’t understand but went along with and pretended that you did to avoid further embarrassment.
You’d gotten out of the car at what was presumably Todoroki’s family house still as silent as ever, though you’d fallen into glaring at the back of Aizawa’s head off and on. You had expected to walk him to the door, say hello, but ultimately fall back to the car with some platitude or another. You had not expected for the main door to slide open and to be attacked with a hug.
With eyes wide you patted the back of the sister. Considering that she was your age and you barely knew her, and as far as you knew everything was okay, it was a little awkward. Looking towards the neutral Todoroki with a very large question mark all over your expression, you gently patted the emotional girl’s back.
“I told her you helped the old man.”
Funny, though his phrasing lacked any sort of bite or passion you would have thought he’d show more respect for his father. He’d been visibly shaken when he watched the fight on television. Now though there seemed to be a distance or disengagement that you didn’t understand. Angry Boy’s nickname for him of Icy Hot suddenly seemed so much more fitting.
“Thank you,” she said passionately.
You shrugged. “It was Recovery Girl.”
Fuyumi pulled back with a confused look on her expressive face. She stepped back slightly as she released you, looking to her brother and then back to you.
“Recovery Girl is on record as healing him,” you said plainly. “I’m not licensed to do something like that...so Recovery Girl healed him.”
A look of understanding replaced her quizzical expression. You smiled good naturedly as she let out a sound of acceptance.
“Tell her thank you for me,” Fuyumi said as quietly as she tried to collect herself. “Come on in; the Soba is almost ready.”
“I’ll see you at ten,” you told Todoroki respectfully.
“You’re not staying?” Fuyumi asked she turned to her brother as you slowly shook your head no. Todoroki gave a light shrug before taking a step into the house.
“Please, I made plenty. And I’m sure father will want to express his gratitude!”
“Really, it’s fine—“
“Shotoooo, tell her to stay for dinner!” Fuyumi called out in an exaggerated tone while grabbing at her younger brother’s sleeve.
“Stay for dinner,” Candy Cane said in a monotone voice.
And that was how you got roped into a family dinner with your student, your client, and their family. You were just glad that whatever affliction had taken hold of your tongue back at the dorms hadn’t reared its head. The dinner had been tense and awkward enough without you actively making it worse.
