It was one hell of a ride. Raven had to focus on maintaining the threads of his sanity intact.
Ajax rushed in whirlwind of thoughts each shooting rapidly making it difficult to keep track of where one tendril started and another left off.
Why is he so excited? More than I.
'I'm sorry, black beauty. You made me wait for so long.'
Ajax chuckled and called out, 'Infants!'
A confusing mixture of mental traces, emotions and whispers surrounded them like soap-bubbles in a bath. Ajax put up a border around Raven, calming and protecting him,
'Remember your training! Build a shield around yourself. Overcome the confusion.'
Remember the training – build up a shield – overcome the confusion - remember – build up – overcome...
From deep inside his own barrier grew, Raven concentrated on expanding it until it finally reached Ajax. The Elite praised, 'very good' and removed his shield from the mongrel.
Instantly the diffused infant presence-mixture closed in upon him pressing against his shield with unbelievable strength. Raven gasped, suddenly feeling very assailable.
'Too much!'
A part of the bubble vanished into far away quadrants of the mental room while the remaining part closed even tighter around him.
Raven tried again, 'Not so tight, please.'
He transferred emotions together with thoughts not quite sure if he could reach the infants. A subtle change in the mixture gave him hope. For one moment, the mongrel thought that he would be able to distinguish among the different individuals; however, this was a far cry from what he had hoped. They would not individualize into separate distinct entities. Only one retained a distinct individuality. He fixated his interest on it. As soon as he did so, it dashed away. He saw it attacking Ajax and fighting him back to the extremity of the mental room, leaving Raven on his own.
The infant returned and when it reached Raven's barrier all of the other infants retreated.
It demanded, 'Let me in!'
'No!'
The infant pushed against the border growing even more demanding, 'Let me in!' but Raven remained firm, 'No. You will crush me. I can't ... merge with you.'
With the sheer anger, frustration, and force of a toddler’s rage, the infant went against him with sheer, sapping the energy of Raven's barrier. Quickly the mongrel established a second barrier, closing tightly around his core giving up the outer wall. With the crumbling of the outer wall, emotions of fear washed over the infant. Its color changed but it backed away keeping its distance, accepting Raven's boundaries.
'Are you like me?'
'Like you?'
'Distinct.'
Raven smiled, 'Yes, I'm distinct.'
Curiosity, not longer aggressiveness reached out to him, 'How does he call you?' The infant gestured to Ajax, who reviewed the scene from a distance.
'He calls me Raven.'
'Can I call you that?'
'Of course – it is my name. How does he call you?'
'Infants.'
Raven nodded. His opposite only partway understood the meaning of names. He gestured towards the other infants,
'That's what he calls all of you. How does he call you aside from them?'
'Liam.'
Raven's heart gave a leap and an uncontrolled wave of delight swept from him to the infant, together with his memory of Liam's physical attributes in the tube.
'Is Liam a name?'
'Yes.'
He morphed his appearance into the mental image obtained from Raven’s mind, 'is that me?'
'Yes, that is what you look like.'
'Where?'
From Raven’s mind, Liam soaked up the images, layout, and contents of the sanctuary in vivid detail. Disappointment swept back and the intensity increased when Ajax called out for Raven from afar.
Liam shouted, 'No!' and pushed Raven deeper into the mental room, 'Don't leave me!'
'I won't leave you for long. I will come back.'
Liam burst out into a figure of rage. He turned again against Ajax but Raven held him back. He gathered Liam to his chest stroking his hair,
'I will come back. I promise.'
'Don't leave me!'
Ajax suddenly stood behind Liam and rested his hands on the infant's shoulders. 'I'm here. You are not alone.'
Liam pressed himself up to Raven, again trying to break through the mental barrier.
'I don't want him here. He is different.'
'I don't understand, Liam.'
Ajax interrupted, 'You got to go Raven. It's too dangerous for you to stay longer. Remember, it's your first time.'
Liam tightened his hold on Raven.
'I will come back, Liam. Don't you trust me?'
'No. Why should I?'
Liam overwhelmed him with a confusing unbalanced mixture of emotions and only partly understood knowledge that no child his age should have, before loosening the hold on Raven and dashing away.
'Come! He will be fine.'
'Ahem.'
He followed Ajax back into reality, accompanied by a strange feeling stretching out like a thin fathom between him and Liam. When opening his eyes, a smiling Kris stood beside the basin holding a towel in his hands.
'Liam?'
No answer but the mental cord gave a tug. Raven took the towel and pressed a kiss against Kris' knuckles. He felt lighthearted and full of confidence, except for a splitting headache. He tried to get up and gasped, “Fuck!” His eyes rolled back and shudders wracked his body for several seconds before going limp from the effects of his first ride into the mental landscape of the infants’ world.
~
Hours later he woke in his bed with Kris standing by its side. “I'm sorry, little one. Lately I cause you nothing but trouble.”
“Are you still in pain?”
“No.”
Kris climbed atop of him and held him down by his shoulders, “Don't you dare do it ever again!” His fingers dug sharply into Raven's flesh, “I try, little one. ... Would you please...”
“No!”
The redhead was too worked up to let go now. He had been through too much during the last days. He wanted to yell at Raven, to thoroughly appeal to his conscience but his nerves won and he fell silent.
The mongrel grabbed hiss arms and pushed him off himself, pinning him to the bed. “Take it easy, I’m fine.”
Kris’ fists swatted against Raven's chest. “This time! What about tomorrow and the day after?” He continued to fight, working himself into fury until finally Raven pressed physically down against the angry lithe frame, ceasing the Feron’s struggles.
“Little one! I'm fine. I'm not going to leave you anytime soon.”
Tears welled up in Kris' eyes, “Promise me!”
“I promise.”
The Feron held onto him as if for dear life, “Where you lead, I follow.” He moved his head up and pulled Raven into a kiss but the mongrel broke away, “Please, Kris. Don't.”
His hurt expression and the free flow of tears down his cheeks gave Raven an incredible feeling of guilt but he couldn't ... He couldn't.
Kris hurried out of the berth and ran away. He didn't know where to and simply stumbled through the corridors, accidentally bumping into Nyet.
He looked at the taller man, puzzled to see him in the company of another one, holding him by the hips and sharing a bottle of liquor. I would have sworn he was into Ajax. He must have stared because Nyet shout at him, “Close your mouth!” before he gave his companion a pat on the ass, “Fuck off.” The man wasn't in the least offended. He wriggled the bottle out of Nyet's hands, winking and mischievously smiling, “See you later.”
Nyet pushed Kris forward into a room, “What happened, pet? Got the needle?”
Still distracted from the unexpected hitting he asked back, “Was that your lo...” He never got to end the sentence. “Fuck buddy.” Kris blushed and averted his eyes, “Oh.”
“What, appalled? Pets are strange nowadays.”
“That's not it. I just ... envy you.” He didn't know why he confessed to the man but once he did, his walls crumbled down and he wanted, no needed, to give vent to his feelings and Nyet seemed right.
“Bullshit. There's a line of candidates desperate for a turn at your pretty ass. Your mongrel doesn't seem to be overly possessive.”
“That's the problem.” He paused and eventually Nyet grew impatient,
“Boy, I can't read your mind. If you want me to understand, you have to explain a little more.”
“I'm not like other pets. I can't pair with anyone I want....”
“And? Don't make me pull everything out of your nose.”
“I mean I can't – physically. I'm not able to react to anyone but Raven. They made me that way.”
Nyet shot him a questioning look before he decided to pull him into a passionate kiss. He slid their tongues against the other and ran his hands down Kris' sides to cup his ass. He gave it firm squeezes and even moved onto the redhead's front, sliding a hand inside with curling fingers around his cock. Despite his ministrations and Nyet was positive about his skills, he elicited not the tiniest bit of reaction from the Feron.
“That's twisted. They made you that way?”
Kris nodded.
“You really can't ... not at all?”
“Only aphrodisiacs get a reaction out of me but that's no fun at all.”
“Oh.” The technician's expression still resembled a mild confusion, “I could have sworn the two of you... Why else would you sneak out and sleep in your crashed car?”
Kris moved his head up and gestured to his eyes, “It doesn't strike under the dim light. The exchange is rather painful, nothing you want to share with roommates.”
Nyet came closer to get a better look. Silvery eyes. “They were blue, weren't they?”
A knock at the door interrupted them. The technician muttered, “About time” and went opening the door.” He came back wit a tray and smiled at Kris, “Hungry?” The boy nodded eagerly and Nyet stuffed a piece of cheese into his mouth, easily lifting his spirits with only this little of an effort.
An alert hummed. “Fuck!” Nyet got up, “Come along!” Kris chewed his bite down and stumbled behind the technician, not without grabbing a piece of meat from the tray.
“What's up?”
“Don't know. All the dreamers were summoned to the chamber immediately.”
The whole chamber was in turmoil. Dreamers settled into basins while others still prepared and the technicians had obvious trouble adjusting the system. Someone stuffed a towel into the siren at the door to dull the acoustic alert.
“I can't see Raven.”
“He isn't here.”
Kris turned on his heels and hurried to the crew quarters while Nyet took position at his terminal. A fellow-technician approached him, his voice betraying the same anxiety all the persons present shared, “Ajax is missing.”
After searching into the situation Nyet calmed them down, stating loudly, “He is in the system.” He pressed further buttons and gasped, “Attention everybody, Raven is with him.”
If possible, more agitation would spread out in the room. The technicians, whose dreamers already settled into the basins, passed the information via system on, before they finished the linking.
Ledya settled at the station next to him, whispering, “They separate.”
Raven woke with his head in Kris' lap. He reached up to touch his cheek, “Hey, little one. How long have I been out?”
The Feron just wagged his head, “Too long.”
He shoved the hair out of Raven's face, wiping his forehead with a cold cloth, “What happened?”
“The infants. This morning they were just a quivering mass but they are utterly perplexed now – they separate. ”
“What next?”
“Help me up, please. We got to get going. Ajax put the infants to sleep but they need us when they wake. “
“They only need you, not us.”
The hurtful expression made Raven feel guilty again. He sat up on his own resting an arm around Kris' shoulders. “I need you. Don't give me that face, little one. It's too heartbreaking to stand. ”
~
'Everything that comes to the infants first goes to Liam. He is the most evolved and supposed to function as multiplier. '
'He can't! The infants need experiences – wide experiences, nothing what Liam can provide. He knows much but he doesn't understand it. He is unpredictable, acting on sheer instinct.'
'That's what you're here for.'
An unmistakable feeling of anger rose in Raven's chest. He had a feeling where this conversation turned to – a path he clearly denied to go down!
'What are you going to do, black beauty? Doom them?'
'You asshole! You calculating asshole. You planned this. Right?'
'Let's say I hoped for it.'
He stroke hair back from Raven's mental face,
'When you contacted me from Eos, I wanted it, now I demand it. Answer my question!'
Confusion threw itself in the mixture of Raven's emotions.
'I never contacted you from Eos.'
'Oh yes you did but in your immature mental state you never realized. Answer, Raven, I am out of patience.'
How can I do that? I don't have enough experiences for so many lives. Sharing my memories, my kind of memories...?
He threw a killing glance at the mental Ajax. Being tricked didn't make him feel any better, in fact shamed him to some extent.
Such a Blondie!
'I don't share with you.'
Ajax quashed the objection, 'Fine with me, if you find a way.'
'I will!'
Actually the statement was barely more than a testament to Raven's amazingly stubbornness and childish.
'You have come so far in only one day, you never cease to amaze me. I don't count on fools, black beauty.' He came closer,
too close to be comfortable with and asked, 'Can I wake the infants tomorrow?'
Without waiting for an answer, his lips ghosted over Raven's the mental caresses dulled the boy nearly to sleep. He ferociously pushed against the Elite, earning himself a chuckle. Mental Ajax leaned back, not the slightest bit intimidated with the boy's angry stare. He changed his physical appearance into an image of Raoul. Almost perfect – almost – missing the exact coloring of Raoul's eyes he threw away the chance of stunning Raven for more than a moment.
'Better?'
'How very disappointing.'
The mental appearance dissolved. Raven could have sworn he saw a hurt expression on his face but he chuckled again, stating,
'In the end you will come around, you must have been born for me.'
Ajax extended himself into the mental ether, not expecting the boy to follow. Raven’s next mood took him by surprise, the attack laded with an amount of anger only an Elite could manage to produce in a mongrel in this short of a time span.
A strangely deformed mental Ajax shout out, 'Don't you dare!'
A shudder went through the whole system and even reached the sleeping infants. Just calmed the whole lot of technicians transformed into a bunch of nervousness again. The Elite tossed Raven out of the system.
“They wake too fast!”
Ajax, while still in the basin, ripped the cables from his head and Raven did the same. Once out of the basin, they literally jumped each other's throats both oblivious to the crowd of technicians and the tearing linkages. The mental cord to Liam trembled, threatening to drag the mongrel back.
“They wake!”
“What!”
“That can't be!”
Suddenly a very real hand pressed against Raven's throat, “Put them back to sleep!”
The boy closed his fingers around the Elite's, desperately trying to pry them open. Out of the corner of his eyes Kris was struggling against Nyet. The Feron's screaming went down in the whirring of his ears. Ajax suddenly loosened his hold and Raven fell to the ground, coughing. In a heartbeat the Elite returned to the unmoving figure of tranquility and arrogance, Raven despised so much.
Didn’t make any sense... He remembered Liam's words He is different and added up one and one.
“Who are you?”
