CHAPTER 21
After several minutes of pacing, Keisuke faced Sachi. "Nani, Onēsama?"
"If for any reason you have any more problems you will call me before you do anything at all." Sachi lifted a hand to stall Keisuke's mutinous argument before it began. "I will have your word before I leave here 'Nīchan. That lard butted baka you just canned from the team will probably try something else before he gets lost for good."
"Fine, Onēsama. If I run into any trouble with onnas I'll be sure you get a call before I get myself into major trouble." Keisuke sounded sullen as he agreed.
Sachi-sama smiled and gave him a firm nod of approval. "That's a good start. However, I mean any kind of trouble, not just onnas for now. Let me know how the sponsorships are going for your oversees battle. If I can convince Otosān, perhaps we can help a little bit as well if you are a touch short, but not by too much." She started toward her emerald greed FC.
The blond waited until she was in her car before he turned and pointed toward the vending machines. "I have a favor to ask of you three. . . . I know you want the truth, Fumihiro. Will you listen to me before judging anything I have to say?" The request floored Kenta. The S-14 driver found that he swung between amused, and astounded by every subtle change Keisuke displayed.
"Hai. Don't I always?" Fumihiro grumbled in reply.
"Shall we leave, Keisuke-san?" Matsimoto pointed between himself and Kenta as he asked his question.
"iie. It's fine. Since you're making guesses already, I might as well tell you too. Otherwise, things will never get cleared up." Keisuke sounded disgusted.
Matsimoto and Fumihiro glanced at each other and nodded. Kenta brought up the rear as they followed Keisuke out of the main parking lot. His mentor looked around to insure that they were alone as he stopped by the drink vending station. Kenta was curious about the favor his coach wanted. Keisuke looked up at the star studded sky with an uneasy posture. He was frowning as he turned back to them.
"Fujiwara wants to come here to apologize to everyone involved in the shooting. Arai's obviously obsessed with Fujiwara. Aniki and I can't allow Fujiwara on Akagi turf if he could wind up getting hurt all over again. I was thinking the restaurant is still open until nine at night so if we get everyone together there, Fujiwara can apologize the way he wants."
"If Fujiwara faces Arai and the Red Suns, it should put an end to all the trouble that Arai has caused."
"No way, Fumihiro. Arai's a huge problem and I can tell that by how he acted tonight. Make sure his sticker's gone in forty-eight hours, and minasan knows the real reason he got canned. Keep any meetings with Fujiwara to the other Red Suns present at the shooting. Kashiwazaki obviously isn't in Arai's camp. He's fine. Nakajo is an uncertain right now. Hiroshi won't be a problem because he knows me better than to listen to Arai's big mouth. Fujiwara doesn't need any more stress than he already has. I'll get Akimoto and the Walking Man members that were there together."
Fumihiro crossed his arms over his chest and spoke. "Okay. But, naze would Fujiwara feel he has to apologize again? He gave minasan a good apology in his letter. Ryosuke-san said Fujiwara's suffering with serious health problems when he gave us the copies. From everything you said a few minutes ago, it sounds like he really is ill."
"Everything is very complicated, minasan. I suppose I'll have to tell you part of the trouble so you'll understand. Fujiwara's very tight lipped about everything. He'll get mad as hell that I said anything if he ever finds out I said there are problems over Mogi in his life. Aniki says it's a miracle that Fujiwara isn't half as screwed up as his Otosān."
"Huh? Nani does Fujiwara's Otosān have to do with Fujiwara apologizing in person?" Matsimoto asked.
"Fujiwara's obsessed with not causing problems for a reason. All I'll say is that Fujiwara's childhood was a huge nightmare, like you guessed, Matsimoto."
Kenta's jaw dropped over Keisuke's information about his boyfriend. Alarm skittered along Kenta's spine. "Whoa. Is Fujiwara really that messed up, Keisuke-san?"
"In some ways, hai, Kenta. Fujiwara doesn't even know how to act around a normal family. Fujiwara almost has panic attacks if there's any kind of mess left out for a few minutes. He starts cleaning up even though he's not supposed to do anything. Aniki and I have damn good reasons to be worried about him right now. Things have gotten even messier for him since the shooting."
"Nani do you mean messier, Keisuke-san?" Matsimoto asked.
"Fujiwara's getting the rawest deal possible, and he doesn't deserve it." Keisuke placed his hands on his hips. "Fumihiro, I know you want the truth about Okāsan's questions at the hospital."
"Hai. It's just, . . . I feel like you don't trust any of us even though we're your friends, Keisuke-san."
"Gee, I wonder how I got to be paranoid. I mean, there's so few assholes like Arai to deal with, Fumihiro. I'm used to this kind of shit, but Fujiwara isn't. It's only Fujiwara getting fucked over because he freaked out after I turned his life around and made it bearable. Naze should I care about obsessed assholes going after him? Give me a Kami-sama damned break!" Everyone stepped back with wide eyes as Keisuke snarled bitterness.
Kenta knew that classmates had broadcast Keisuke's orientation at the end of middle school. The information had caused Keisuke more suffering than most felt in a lifetime. Being bisexual forced Keisuke to learn how to survive the hard way. As he got older, Keisuke's anger forged him into a formidable fighter. When Ryosuke brought Keisuke into street racing, people rarely discussed his orientation because of his gangster's reputation. People refused to tangle with the temperamental, and wiry blond.
"No need to be harsh, Keisuke-san. We understand you're steamed about Arai. We've been angry about him too. Onegai, tell us up front whether you'll trust us with the truth or not." Fumihiro's hands came up in a peaceful gesture.
Kenta watched Keisuke scratch his head and snort. "Che. Just keep this to yourselves unless Fujiwara decides to talk about it on his own. 'Kāsan picked one hell of a bad time to say anything about my orientation because Fujiwara's Otosān is hard-core homophobic. He got mad as hell when Okāsan asked Aniki if I protected Fujiwara because I had a crush on him."
Matsimoto's expression mirrored incomprehension. "She . . . nani?"
Keisuke's snapped at the hachi roku's main mechanic. "Don't nani me! Minasan in the Akagi area knows I'm bi! Of course Okāsan would ask Aniki that, Matsimoto!"
Matsimoto and Fumihiro both stepped back again before they could stop themselves. Matsimoto spoke in haste. "Gomen ne, Keisuke-san. I was shocked that your Okāsan thinks you have a crush on Fujiwara. I mean, it doesn't make any sense for her to ask something like that. You don't go after men."
Keisuke heaved a sigh and scrubbed his hand across his face. "Okāsan was looking for an explanation, and rattled enough that she didn't think before opening her mouth."
Fumihiro nodded. "I remember Ryosuke-san saying you were suicidal because of being attracted to a few men. You've never crossed the line, so most people have forgotten about it. Most of us figure that you've more or less outgrown it."
Kenta bit his tongue to keep from giving the truth away. Keisuke gave a derisive snort over Fumihiro's input. "It was one hell of a rude shock when I realized that I had a very strong reaction to that shonen in middle school. Of course I was suicidal. Minasan says something's wrong with bisexuals. My own ryōshin gave up on me. I was always fighting after I hit puberty. Assholes like Arai would gang up on me every day for no reason. If Aniki hadn't scared the shit out of me by taking me on that time attack, I'd probably be dead now."
Matsimoto looked at the shoe he scuffed through the thin film of snow. "I didn't realize you were persecuted, Keisuke-san. You have good reason to hide the truth if you ever develop a crush on another man."
Keisuke grumbled, "Because of Okāsan's question, Fujiwara has been kicked out of his home, and lost both of his jobs. The hachi roku and most of Fujiwara's clothes are at my family's condo already. My ryōshin told him to not worry about finding a job, or place to live before his leg's healed. Okāsan feels responsible for this mess."
"Fujiwara doesn't deserve that, Keisuke-san. I mean, even if you had protected him because of a crush, Fujiwara shouldn't have been thrown out of his home. It was a question." Fumihiro was the loudest in expressing his shock.
Matsimoto's stunned expression was an eloquent protest against what had happened to Fujiwara that needed no words. Kenta felt as if his gut had been hit by a sledgehammer. He had another reason to be worried about the couple's relationship after this bomb shell. Keisuke glared at them and double checked that nobody was close enough to hear them.
"Keep your voices down. Fujiwara refused to turn on me when Oyaji-san demanded he do so. His Otosān didn't like hearing iie from his musuko and kicked him out, minasan. Hell, Fujiwara's not even out of the bone brace, or off medical restrictions yet, and he's already talking about finding work and a place of his own. He feels like he's imposing on my family, and we can't convince him otherwise. Minasan's frustrated with his stubborn insistence that he has to do his share."
Matsimoto murmured, "It's not like you've got a crush on Fujiwara, Keisuke-san. Naze is his Otosān so angry about your orientation after you saved his musuko's life?"
Fumihiro scratched his head adding, "I don't understand how Fujiwara's Otosān could turn on him simply because you're bisexual. It doesn't make sense, Keisuke-san."
"Okāsan was almost right, and Aniki was too exhausted to hide his reaction to her question. He knew that with everything going on, Oyaji-san would hear the team's complaints before they left too. Okasān was panicking and gave my orientation away. Oyaji-san figured out the main reason I was determined to keep Mogi away from Fujiwara because of the time he and I talked about her and I got my hands on the phone when she called to harass him." Keisuke blew out his breath and shook his head. "I'm not even sure when I fell in love with Fujiwara. But, I am."
"You're, . . . in love . . . with Fujiwara?" Matsimoto looked like he could not process the words he repeated. His eyes were saucer wide as he looked at the blond. Keisuke nodded in return.
Fumihiro muttered, "That certainly explains a few things." His voice gained strength as he looked at Keisuke. "Does Fujiwara know about this?"
"I told him about how I feel not long before Mogi showed up and tried to kill us both."
"That long? So, how does Fujiwara feel about your . . . erm, . . . fondness?"
"It rattled Fujiwara so much that he had severe panic attacks for the first couple of weeks. He had finally gotten a grip on the situation right before Mogi attacked. Fujiwara really thought things over. He told me that everything that's happened since he met me has been a lot better than he ever expected. I taught him how to make goals and figure out the steps to make them reality. I helped him understand how to make some big changes in his life long before I fell in love with him. Because of everything I've done, Fujiwara felt he had to refuse to turn on me when his Otosān told him to."
Fumihiro scratched his head. "I think I'm starting to understand Fujiwara's reaction that night. With everything you've said tonight, it makes sense that Fujiwara was yelling at you to stay with him because he didn't know who he was any longer."
"I didn't know Fujiwara said any of the things I heard about tonight. I couldn't hear anything but a droning buzz in my ears. I was in trauma induced shock, and couldn't breathe. I could see that he was talking when he bent over me. But, my vision failed even before I passed out."
Kenta added, "Fujiwara's apology letter made his reaction more realistic when he described his relationship with you. But, I felt like he was leaving something out. His reaction really came off as too extreme for an ordinary friendship situation, Keisuke-san."
Keisuke shook his head. "Fujiwara meant everything in that letter, minasan. To be blunt, Oyaji-san's attitude plays in my favor. Fujiwara learned to not expect anything from anyone. That's the reason he works so damned much. He's been working since seventh grade to pay for everything he needed, or wanted on his own this whole time."
"Seventh grade? I didn't know it was possible to get a job that young?!" Kenta was too stunned to recognize which of them has spoken. He had heard that Fujiwara started driving during middle school but had not realized it was to earn money.
"Fujiwara managed to be helpful enough by doing the four A.M. deliveries so Oyaji-san would give him spending money. He also did things for friends' families and got paid for his help. Once he was old enough to get a legal part time job he did. Oyaji-san trying to force Fujiwara to choose between the life I showed him he can make for himself, and the one he hates living, has made it easier for me. I have already proven that I'm the one person Fujiwara can rely on."
Matsimoto shook his head, sounding uneasy. "It sounds like you're trying to get Fujiwara to accept you, Keisuke-san. You said Fujiwara didn't take the news about you being interested in him very well. I mean, Fujiwara does seem to be attached to you, but, if he panicked so badly when he found out about you, . . . ?" The mechanic's voice trickled away.
Keisuke stopped pacing at the vending machine and grabbed a can of coffee. He also got warm drinks for the rest of them. Matsimoto followed Keisuke since he had asked the question. Keisuke tossed warm drinks to each of them and dropped onto one of the benches. The blond had an odd expression as he opened his can. Kenta dropped onto the other end of the bench Keisuke had chosen.
Fumihiro moved next to Matsimoto and opened his own coffee. The wheat-haired street racer grabbed a cigarette from his pack and lit it. Although Kenta knew how much farther along the romance had progressed, he thought it best to pretend ignorance. Keisuke needed time to think Kenta decided. The proud man Kenta idolized for his strength and decisive personality would not find it easy to continue. Fujiwara's well being would make Keisuke reticent about saying anything that could cause additional harm.
Kenta tried to ease the tension. "If I were in Fujiwara's shoes, having someone that showed me how to improve my life would make it hard for me to turn on them. I'd want to find a solution even if things felt weird to me. Fujiwara has reasons to stay loyal to Keisuke-san. Knowing that there's someone willing to listen to, and understand his problems must be a huge relief too."
"Even so, this situation makes things a lot harder for Fujiwara, Kenta. Things sound about as bad as they can get. Having stomach problems, high stress, a broken leg, and then finding himself homeless and jobless is more than Fujiwara should have to handle." Matsimoto motioned with open palms to the sky as he spoke. "I understand that Fujiwara would find it hard to cut Keisuke-san out of his life because of the help he's received. Still, even if his life was improving before the shooing, it sounds like it's much worse than it used to be right now."
Keisuke squared his shoulders. "Not even close, Matsimoto. Things are still better than they were around the time I battled him on Akina. Fujiwara knows I'm not playing a damned game with him, minasan. I asked him to give me a chance to prove that I'm worth the risks of crossing the line for even though society says it's wrong. The hell I've already helped Takumi get through give me spots to use so I do stay in his life. I've made it impossible for Fujiwara not to accept me. I can't lose Takumi without putting up one hell of a fight."
Keisuke's voice held a resolute edge. All of them stared at him, dismayed by his words. Hearing Keisuke pointing out weaknesses that he would use to win Fujiwara's heart was ruthless. His blunt declaration that he would secure Fujiwara's affections through such means shook Kenta to his core. His shock was genuine as he stared at his mentor.
Fumihiro began to rub his temples. "This is so damned weird. I'm not sure I can wrap my brain around this, and I knew since you hit puberty that you're capable of swinging. How the hell has Fujiwara managed?"
"Just because Fujiwara didn't know I'm bisexual from the start, doesn't mean he can't understand it. I explained things to Fujiwara so he could cope with it. Maybe if I tell you how this happened you can deal with it better." Keisuke sighed as he looked at his can.
Kenta leaned forward. He was intrigued that Keisuke was willing to explain anything. "If you want to tell us, we'll listen, Keisuke-san. But, you don't have to get into the situation if you feel like you have to prove something."
Keisuke frowned at him so Kenta wrapped his arms around his bent legs and rested his cheek on his knees. "It's not that. Che. I can't hate Fujiwara. Believe me, I've tried. I didn't understand naze I found myself at Akina around four A.M. several times a week. I'd challenge Fujiwara every time I went there to keep him racing. I couldn't make myself leave him alone. It pissed me off, but I couldn't stop myself. I told myself that if I beat him in a rematch, I'd stop finding myself waiting for him to show up. . . . " The blond's voice trickled off.
"Hiroshi told me that you didn't want to see Fujiwara and Ryosuke to race because someone had to lose." Fumihiro's tone encouraged Keisuke to continue.
"I meant it. I couldn't stand the idea of Fujiwara losing a race, even to Aniki. My head was a mess. I was mad because I couldn't understand my own feelings. I started taking my frustration out on Fujiwara because I couldn't stop myself from looking for him at Akina during early hours of the morning. I didn't know naze I felt so drawn to him. I went into really heavy denial about my own feelings."
"Keisuke-san, . . ." Fumihiro was stopped as Keisuke shook his head and raised his hand.
"Let me finish before I lose my nerve." Fumihiro nodded and fell silent. Matsimoto looked puzzled when Kenta glanced at him. Pride in his mentor for making such a huge concession glowed in Kenta's chest. It was solid proof that Fujiwara had made a huge change in Keisuke's life through accepting and returning his love.
"When Aniki said he wanted Fujiwara to be part of Project D, I had a new excuse to go over to Akina, and verbally hammered Fujiwara so he'd join. I challenged him on every level I could think of. I even brought up going pro, looking for a soft spot to use just to keep him around me, without admitting to myself that I wanted him around. Aniki's upcoming residency became the perfect excuse. I told Fujiwara we'd battle again, after he learned how to be a real racer. I said I'd kick his ass behind the wheel, then go pro to make him mad enough to join the team. After we began our active training and battle phase, I was with him more. There were times I'd snap at him to pay attention to my battles because I wanted him to see me, but I couldn't admit it to myself. . . ."
Kenta knew the answer but thought to prod his mentor when Keisuke's voice hesitated again. "When did you stop denying your feelings, Keisuke-san?"
"When the hachi roku bounced off the cliff face that night. I flipped out and used the FD to pin the hachi roku against the mountain so I wouldn't lose Fujiwara. I thought Aniki hadn't tried to get Fujiwara to stop driving. I barely kept myself from picking Aniki apart because Takumi got hurt. I honestly thought he always listened to Aniki."
Kenta was still dumbfounded at hearing Keisuke say Fujiwara's first name with such ease. It seemed quite natural when he said it. Most likely Keisuke had not realized he had used Fujiwara's first name.
Fumihiro and Matsimoto stood spellbound. The level of stubborn resistence Keisuke had used to keep his emotions from clinging to Fujiwara sounded that impressive. Keisuke ran a hand through his hair as he huffed in vexation.
"Aniki had two theories about my foul temper before the accident. I hated Takumi with a passion because he stole Aniki's time and focus away from my training. Or, I liked Fujiwara way too much and was worried he had a crush on Aniki. Because I used to FD to save Fujiwara, the answer was obvious to Aniki. He told me Fujiwara wasn't interested in him so I should stop being an asshole to minasan when he got to the hospital. Talk about being rude to force me to admit I'm in love!"
The sandy-haired S-14 driver was grateful that Ryosuke had hidden his part in giving Ryosuke the right answer. Ryosuke-san claimed it was own observation. That protected Kenta from Keisuke's possible wrath.
"We remember when the medics loaded Fujiwara into the ambulance. We watched you raise your fist to Ryosuke-san when he tried to stop you from following them down the mountain. The look on your face as you jerked away from him and got into the FD was scary. I'd never seen you so angry before. Tonight, you were just as mad because of Arai's badgering you over Fujiwara. Now I know the reason for your rage tonight too. Hearing someone say horrible things about someone you love is enough to make anyone furious." Fumihiro gave his soft agreement.
Kenta was curious about Keisuke's feelings toward Arai. "Do you think Arai's actually interested in Fujiwara, Keisuke-san? I always thought he was straight, and maybe even a little homophobic."
Keisuke stood and began to pace. "I won't rule out the possibility. Arai's too fixated on Takumi's orientation, and bed partners for a normal homophobic person. . . . Anyway, shortly after he was released from the first hospital, Fujiwara found out about me. Knowing that I was fighting the way I feel helped him to understand all the glares and nastiness I had thrown at him. He realizes that being in love with him wasn't part of my long term plans. He forgave me for being such a huge asshole to him."
Matsimoto had recovered his wits while Keisuke spoke. "I'd be overwhelmed if I was in Fujiwara's shoes. I even wondered if you despised him some days when we were on expeditions."
"I'm lucky Fujiwara decided to work things out. He respects me even when I haven't deserved it. We started training together a couple nights a week. He wanted to help me master non-ABS braking. He thought if he helped me, we could resolve things in a peaceful way. It was the perfect excuse to be with him. I also improved once he made me drive that little demonic compact of his. His hachi roku has evolved into one scary monster, Matsimoto. You've done an incredible job in modifying it."
"But, how does Fujiwara think things will turn out?" Fumihiro spoke up. "It's difficult because . . . you're in love with him. Fujiwara seems to want a surrogate onīsan. This could go very sour on you, Keisuke-san."
"Not so, Fumihiro. Fujiwara doesn't seem to understand he has good points worth loving. I get so pissed at him for tearing himself down . . . I find myself yelling at him, . . . frequently. But, Takumi's coming around. I happen to suck at being patient, so . . . I haven't always given him enough space to sort through this. Still, Fujiwara did a damned one eighty after the shooting. He's more worried that he isn't good enough for me than about me being another man now."
Keisuke's annoyance was the most natural part of his story since he began talking Kenta felt. Hearing that Fujiwara had done such a drastic change in his thought processes because of the shooting seemed a bit odd to Kenta, yet it was helping Keisuke to win his heart. Kenta sighed as he pondered their relationship again.
"So, Fujiwara has given you his answer." Fumihiro nodded as he watched Keisuke continue pacing.
Keisuke nodded. "Fujiwara didn't handle it very well when I almost died. It made him realize how important I am to him, minasan. He told me that no matter how weird he finds things, he'd rather be with me than lose me."
"Fujiwara's an amazing person to handle so much without complaining. I think he really needs friends who won't make things worse for either of you. Fujiwara's awesome for trying to understand you, instead of getting angry. I'll help him any way I can, Keisuke-san. Nani about you, minasan?" Kenta added a verbal nudge to help Keisuke.
"l'll try my best to help Fujiwara and you." Fumihiro replied.
"I'm still in shock over this. Fujiwara doesn't need any more pressure, that's for sure. I'll help too, once I've managed to swallow this. Give me a day or two, Keisuke-san." Matsimoto searched Keisuke's face as he spoke.
"Domo, minasan. I'm glad you aren't going to turn on Fujiwara, or me. Sumimasen gozaimasu. I didn't think you'd accept the truth. I'm glad I was wrong."
Kenta watched as the two men nodded with another flare of shock at hearing Keisuke apologize. Only when Ryosuke-san forced him did Keisuke usually apologize. Those apologies were given with a grudging tone. There was no resentment in his tone as he spoke words he usually resented saying. It was another positive sign Kenta decided. He sought to give the other two men something to consider about the bond Keisuke had to Fujiwara.
"You know, Keisuke-san, I think Fujiwara's really good for you. I bet he has something to do with you being calmer. I think you're really good for him too. I hope things work out so you stay together for a long time."
Fumihiro and Matsimoto looked at him for several moments, then looked at each other. Both men began to nod their own agreement. "I think Kenta's right. I know you're good for Fujiwara at least. I guess it would be best if he stays with you. Considering everything you've told us, I'll be hoping for your success, Keisuke-san."
Fumihiro's soft words had Keisuke looking at him with wide, searching eyes. "Domo, Fumihiro."
Matsimoto scratched his head and heaved a sigh. "Man, I never thought you'd cross the line. But, as bad as Fujiwara's life has been. . . . And, hearing you declare that you're doing whatever it takes to keep Fujiwara as your boyfriend. . . . This is freaking me out." The mechanic shook his head as if his logic argued with his emotions. "If you really love him, don't be underhanded with Fujiwara. He's a good person, Keisuke-san. He doesn't deserve that. You don't need to be that way since he's already decided you're important to him." Matsimoto gave Keisuke a stern look. ". . . Look, . . . just make sure that you take good care of Fujiwara from now on."
Keisuke nodded. "I will, Matsimoto. I've already made Takumi's life better. There's no way I'm going to lose him now. I'm even pampering him every chance I can get. Of course, the moment Fujiwara realizes I'm trying to baby him, he tells me to stop. He claims he only needs time around me to feel spoiled. He's so damned adorable when he says it too." Kenta felt his lips twitching up into a smile.
"Nani is that creepy look for, Kenta?" Keisuke gave him a dark look once he noticed.
"I'm really happy for you and Fujiwara, Keisuke-san. Congratulations on finding the love of your life."
Keisuke snorted over his response. After a moment more Keisuke answered in a soft, yet gruff tone, "He really is, Kenta." Keisuke's lips curved into a genuine smile.
Matsimoto chuckled. "I don't think I've ever seen you smile like that before, Keisuke-san. You've got it bad if you can look that happy while complaining that Fujiwara won't let you spoil him." Fumihiro also began to laugh. Kenta found himself joining in because it was amusing to see Keisuke looking so sheepish.
