Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Twenty-one
Age Seventeen
The walk back to the house was filled with a tense, silent air. You really weren't sure what to say to Rorsh. He'd opened up so much that it felt like you were swimming in the unknown. Yet at the same time they were ideas that if you hung on to them in order to keep from drowning, they'd swallow you whole. If you accepted his reasoning then you would have to change a lot of yours. Not to mention there was a lot of other things to consider beside the ideas that he threw at you in an attempt to counter your morality. Like the fact that the scientists just up the ways had experimented on him. They were supposed to study natural phenomena and the pokemon which may have an effect on it. You didn't think that studying the strength of psychic pokemon's abilities fell within that scope.
Not that you could really blame them...Rorsh's abilities were interesting. You knew Rorsh had been a little more dedicated than most farm helpers but the more that time went on you couldn't help but realize just how strange he was in comparison. He'd learned telekinesis on his own...in a day...without you even seeing him practice. That had been years ago of course but you knew he'd only improved since then. When was the last time anyone else met an espeon that could maintain a telekinetic attack for more than an hour?
You still didn't have an answer for that by the time you got home. When you reached the front door it seemed to be just in time. A car pulled up and someone stepped out of the car. They had on full attire, unlike what you were wearing, and looked as though they were at the peak of their day. Normally you would have been just as put together as they were if you'd been expecting company at all. But unfortunately Rorsh hadn't told you to expect someone until the very last minute. You'd spent that time just getting back to the house to greet them. Which meant that you stood before them with sleepy hair and dressed in some flimsy nighties with a robe thrown over the top. You were sure that it was the worst impression you'd ever made on anyone - even over greeting them from head to toe in dirt.
The person in front of you didn't seem to mind. In fact, a blush of embarrassment warmed up your face as you realized that they'd pulled their sunglasses down to have a look at you. And it wasn't in the 'oh that poor, disgusting thing' sort of look. It was more that they were undressing you with their eyes, not that you had much for them to take away really. Trying to regain some composure you took a step forward and held out your hand.
"I apologize for not being properly ready to meet you. I'm currently on the night shift with ghost pokemon and Rorsh just told me that you were coming."
The fair haired man smiled at that and shook your hand in return, "I could only imagine how much better you'd look if you'd been prepared."
Rorsh shifted uneasily in his spot right by your legs. His forked tail wrapped around the back of your thigh, slipping between your knees possessively. He even squeezed your leg when you'd shaken the man's hand, just in case you'd forgotten he was there. But you ignored that behavior in favor of paying attention to the man before you. After all, Rorsh might have gotten you into this mess but it was up to you to make the best of it.
"Are you thirsty? I know it's a bit of a drive to get here," you offered the man.
His face instantly morphed into a visual apology and you knew that he wasn't going to be able to stay. Which was probably for the better considering that you could feel how tense Rorsh was beside you. In fact, you were just glad that he hadn't started to use his power to push the man back or on you to put you in the house. That seemed like the sort of thing he'd do. The fact that he wasn't meant that he was at least trying to not be so aggressive. That meant a lot.
"Normally I'd take you up on that but I have to get back to work. I just came here to keep my promise."
"I understand," you said quietly, maybe a little disappointedly.
No matter how much you loved your pokemon, sometimes it was nice to talk to people who weren't your parents or mentors. You used to be able to do that at school but ever since you pulled out to study from home and focus on your future, that hadn't been an avenue. And it was moments when you did actually get to interact that a light was shone on the pit of loneliness to make it apparent. But you wouldn't put that on anyone especially since it felt incredibly silly. So you held your tongue and kept a slight smile on your face through it all.
As he turned around, familiar egg type in hand and all, the man offered, "Maybe we can go get a drink together sometime. When we're both off the clock."
"I don't think that'd be such a good idea," you said with a hint of irony in your voice
"You don't drink or something?"
"Or something," you said with a small smile. "Legally I'm not allowed to. I'm only seventeen."
The man looked you over for a moment, not in an unusual way or anything. He just seemed mostly shocked. Considering that he'd probably been hitting on you earlier it was understandable. You knew that a lot of the times that whole age of majority thing was hard to tell; or at least it was in your case. Thankfully the man before you didn't seem like he'd press the issue. He did, however, seemed a bit flustered. That was kind of cute. Kind of reminded you of Max.
Okay, so you had a type. Everyone had something they liked and yours was a hint of embarrassment. It helped to remind you that even the prettiest of guys were still human. And it was that humanizing factor that you found cute more so than their actual discomfort.
"Would you just get our child?"
You cast your eyes down to Rorsh. Though his tone might not have been an indication of his emotion, it was clear in other ways. He was impatient and jealous. And the way he kept glaring at the flustered blonde before you made you wonder just when it was he was going to snap. If it wasn't for the fact that you were still nervous about him running off again, about putting himself into such a vile position once more, then you'd have liked to see him get to that point. If for no other reason then you'd know what his breaking point really was. Although you had a fair idea about it - his danger zones seemed to revolve around the idea of you going away with others. You weren't quite sure if that was just males yet, or if he would flip over you wondering off with a female friend. If you had any…yeah, living on a ranch spending all your time learning didn't exactly give you many socializing opportunities.
"Uh, well in that case maybe in a few years?" The scientist offered in a nervous tone as he handed you the egg entirely. "I'd love to check up on that one. Your espeon is quite interesting; we have high hopes for his offspring."
Carefully you accepted the egg as you felt a tremor run through your body. It felt undeniably warm to you. Like it had been tucked away in a delibird's pouch during the middle of summer. And as it started to heat up you felt something press against your hand, like the skin was starting to turn into rubber or something. The scientist looked at you in concern for a moment but you just smiled slightly to try and brush off the shake that had traveled from head to toe.
"I think the egg is about to hatch," you said with a casual tone.
"Really? We estimated that it had another week."
And just like that, the egg started to glow. You knew it was about to hatch but even you hadn't expected the egg to hatch that exact moment. Surprised you continued to hold the egg as it pulsed and shifted. The shell was absorbed into the newly formed eevee even before the lights completely faded. You shifted your hold as eevee solidified and you were able to see the newly hatched pokemon.
What struck you right away was the fact that it had exceedingly pale fur. Like the type of blond that was hard to find in any other creature. Which definitely meant that the eevee in your arms would be classified as a shiny pokemon. In a sort of awe, as you'd never seen a shiny eevee before, you looked down to Rorsh in wonderment as he stared up at you. Slowly you lowered down so that you were on one knee so that he could be face to face with not only you but his child. Rorsh tilted his head as the eevee started to open his eyes. They were the same deep purple that many eevees had, but because of the lightness of his (you assumed it was a him) fur they looked even darker.
"Oh wow. I didn't expect that this egg had a shiny pokemon in it."
You nodded in agreement. You had no idea that Rorsh would have been able to help sire a shiny pokemon. They were quite rare. In fact, they were so rare that you were pretty sure that the scientist was kicking himself for giving you this egg in particular. You could see the cogs turning in his head from your spot. Just out of instinct you held the rather small eevee to your chest in a more possessive fashion. Rorsh stilled in front of you as he reacted to your tenseness.
"I would love to be able to take the eevee back to the lab and—"
For once you were going to have to be contrary. "He stays."
"But shiny pokemon aren't quite all that understood. I know we mainly study weather and the phenomenon around it with pokemon but a chance like this doesn't come very often. I'm sure my other colleagues will be--why does that umbreon look like he's ready to attack?"
The fact that the man switched subjects so quickly was disconcerting. The fact that Nox had come out from the middle of his sleep and was now standing beside you with his hair raised and tail in the sky was a little more predictable. The eevee in your arms shifted to see the dark type pokemon with big wide eyes before he scampered around your neck to hide in your hair. Which, of course, he'd found a way to make into a rat's nest. Somehow he was able to wrap himself around your neck to use your shoulders as places to put his feet without falling off. Dexterous little thing.
As carefully as you could, because you didn't want to dislodge Eevee, you put your hand on Nox's hunches. His red eye flickered over to you but his posture didn't seem to relax at all. You could feel the muscles twitching below the surface. You looked between him and Rorsh - they both seemed ready to go on the offensive.
"Rorsh, Nox, relax. We're not in danger," you tried to get them to understand.
The scientist took a step back and practically walked into his car. He didn't look so much afraid, not like he was going to turn around and run. But he did seem to have a healthy level of respect over the idea that one did not piss off two pokemon who seemed to be guarding something. Or rather, in this case, someone.
"Do you have any more pokemon that I should know about?" the guy asked with a nervous laugh as he tried to not look threatening.
"You wouldn't have to worry about Ember...now Nox and Rorsh...well, I guess you just got too pushy for them."
"Maybe you could return them to their pokeballs? That way you and I could continue talking."
"They don't have pokeballs," you answered honestly.
And seriously, you were in a long shirt and a robe. Did it look like you had a place to put pokeballs even if you had them? You probably could have found some creative spots but that wasn't exactly something that was on your priority list. There was a massive list of stuff above the need for pokeballs at the moment.
"Oh."
You recognized that unless you wanted to get in trouble by some higher power or whatever, you needed to get Rorsh and Nox to calm down. Eevee was also hitting all of your ticklish spots with his fluffy tail. Which was why you were doing your utmost not to just throw him off. You put your hands on both Rorsh's and Nox's head as you rubbed between the ears, talking calming breaths but never taking your eyes off of the rather anxious scientist. He was still kind of cute but you were a bit old fashioned in the fact that while you wanted to see a guy's human side, you also thought bravery was a must have. There was a difference between being cautious and being anxious. He'd just crossed the line. Ten points from raven---yeah, there was no point to that point deduction.
"Look. I think they're just upset that you got so avid over taking Eevee back with you. I don't know how you were raised, but once you give someone a pokemon to be their partner you don't just take them back because they're somehow better than you thought they were going to be. That's rude. And besides the best place to study the shiny variant in the pokemon isn't at a lab. If anything it would have to be at a breeding center or farm. And that's kinda where I live. If it helps I could keep a log and email you the fine points of what I find out."
"That...that would be generous of you. I'm sorry to cut this short but honestly, I don't think either of your pokemon want me to be here any longer."
"I didn't want him here at all."
You weren't quite sure if that was Nox or Rorsh who said it first. Their voices kind of blended together at that point. You landed a chastising look on the two of them as the man got back into his car. With a short goodbye he was back off which left you to get into the house before the dust storm from his tires covered you all in brown.
Once you were back in the house your main priority had been getting Eevee out from your hair. The little thing seemed like it was trying to hang on for dear life. It had taken a lot of cooing and talking about a warm, soft bed he didn't have to worry about falling out of to get him to finally accept being moved. When you sat him down on your bed he went straight for the pillow and dove underneath it. Which was quite the silly sight indeed.
"You should get back to sleep," Nox advised.
"Well thanks to a certain someone, I'm not tired anymore."
"I can fix that."
And just like that, Rorsh used Yawn. Which made you yawn even before the full effects set in. You weren't sure if you were pleased at that move as you readied to pass out, or if you were irritated that he hadn't waited. Either way, you realized that Eevee had copied Rorsh almost exactly so your consultation was the fact that at least Rorsh was going to pass out too.
