A mysterious woman arrives in Tokyo . She has the face of an innocent, but behind her peaceful amber eyes lie dark secrets she alone knew...
Another brand new chapter. To Crewel: This should answer your question. If it's still not clear to you, feel free to shoot me an email. ^_^ Kung hei fat choi to all who celebrate it! Fa gao, yum!
The hut was quiet but outside was a peculiar kind of night. The moon was shining bright and the wind played with the leaves, making rustling noises. It was strange, as though fate had planned this night, long ago. It was a night for lovers.
Sano watched Megumi's gently curved back. Some time during the length of silence that had settled between them, she had siddled away from him, clutching her kimono to cover her nakedness. Sano ached to touch her. His body hungered for her warmth and he was still hard for her. But more than anything else, he wanted to soothe away the pain he had caused. "Megumi," he started to say but she cut him off.
"It's the opium, isn't it?" Her voice was soft, toneless. "You still can't forgive me for my involvement with the Oniwabanshuu. You're so closed to the fact that you haven't even asked me why I was involved in the first place."
It was true. He never did ask her what it was that forced her to work for the syndicate. But it was only because it made no difference to him. He loved her. And that was that. But in saying this, she had unwittingly given him a way out. Now, he could blame his own ineptitude to the guilt she felt about selling drugs. He could use her guilt as an excuse to distance himself from her and in so doing, prevent her from being hurt.
If Sano had paused long enough to think over what he was doing, he would have found some fault in his reasoning. But it is said that love is blind and young hearts are self-destructive. How could anyone keep from being hurt when in love? Sano was the kind of man who only dreamed of a woman like Megumi. She was everything he was not and he felt himself unworthy. If he were to have his way, he'd marry her right this moment but his own insecurity over his weaknesses stopped him. And so it must be that he would do what his heart told him not to. He was going to inflict pain on his beloved in the belief that by doing this, he could spare her a worse kind of pain -- regret.
Sano sighed, affecting an irritated tone as he said, "Of course, it's about the opium! It's always been about opium!" There was a sharp intake of breath from where Megumi lay but Sano continued, "Tell me, Megumi, did you enjoy knowing that your little powdered crystals were the reason for so many unhappy lives and suicides?"
Megumi sat up slowly and looked at Sano then. Her amber eyes were bright with unshed tears though her face remained stone cold. But even with her lack of expression, the way she held her head and the way her soft bottom lip trembled, Sano knew that his words struck deep. He continued harshly, "Why did you do it? Was it about the money? Did you like working for those bastards?"
Megumi's eyes swam and there was uncertainty in her voice when she said haltingly, "I-I...had no choice."
Sano died a thousand deaths when her eyes focused on him and he caught a glimpse of the pain she was suffering. It was a tortured soul he was seeing, a soul so wracked with guilt that she had managed to convince herself that her talent for medicine was a curse, instead of a gift. Sano knew that for Kenshin had told him everything. That afternoon when the red-haired swordsman met Megumi in the woods, the young woman had felt compelled to reveal everything to him. And although it hurt Sano to learn this side of Megumi from someone else, he was still glad for he now understood the true depth of her character. Yet, he still felt it right to hurt her now in order to keep her from being hurt later. She was better off with someone else.
And so having made up his mind on this, Sano continued his relentless quest to hurt Megumi enough to keep her away forever. Hate me, he wanted to scream at her. Hate me. Damn me to hell. But don't look at me like that. I can't bear it. Sano closed his eyes tightly, his jaws clenched as he struggled hard with his own emotions.
A single tear escaped and rolled down Megumi's porcelain cheek. Seeing how Sano was barely able to control his feelings, she rose on her knees and attempted to touch his face. "Sano," she whispered pleadingly. "Please don't hate me. I-I really had no choice. When my parents died, I had nowhere else to go. Please, Sano. Please..."
Cold hands touched his cheeks and Sano involuntarily flinched. This caused Megumi to pause and when Sano opened his eyes, he saw what the gesture did to her. There was a look of indescribable pain in her eyes. He ignored the lump in his throat when he laughed harshly, "Geez, Kitsune. So soon? I just pleasured you a few minutes ago. Give me a break!"
His cruel words hung in the air as Megumi stared at him, not registering anything. Then a sob broke from the forlorn beauty before him and Sano felt the wound in his heart bleed anew. Megumi turned her face away from him, long raven hair shrouding her countenance. If she had turned then, she would have seen the broken look that entered Sano's eyes. His cruelty to her was hurting him more.
"Megumi..."
"Please," Megumi whispered brokenly. "Just leave me alone."
Without another word, Sano went out, leaving Megumi alone in the hut. He didn't return to the dojo that night or even to the inn where he was staying. Instead, he went straight to the nearest tavern and ordered five gallons of sake. He had accomplished his goal and he intended to get drunk.
