Raven stared at the hydroflation-chamber and the bunch of cables and tubes. Yet he avoided looking directly at the entity housed within its confines. Ajax came up behind him with embracing arms, hands moved upwards trailing over the sides of his body until they crossed paths in mid-chest continuing their caress over the slope of a tanned neck meeting at his chin. Here they cupped gracefully, lifting Raven’s head up. His voice was breathy but the action made his volition clear enough.
“Look!”
Raven swallowed the lump growing in his throat and riveted on the one inside. He expected the counterpart of the crippled vision Ajax gave him in the stream. But no...
The body in front of his eyes betrayed an unrivaled beauty, worthy nothing less than Elite - Blondie.
Smooth, delicate skin stretched out over precise calculated muscles. The skin, though pale, shone opaquely and the limbs had just the right proportions. If the body was perfection, the face was unearthly . The face was beautiful, full of charm and its eyes graced an aura of timeless knowledge impossible to gain in one lifetime. If it wasn't for everything else, you could have easily fallen for those eyes. Raven turned around to face the Ajax behind him.
“Perfection in a test tube. Nonviable perfection.”
“Nonviable?”
“This is the original Ajax, created by Abyss and there lies the crux. Humans can't create perfection. They don't understand it.”
Ajax went to the chamber and rested his face and fingers against it as if caressing a lover. Raven didn't dare interrupt him but Ajax anyway continued.
“If it was the other way around, if the body instead of the brain worked... I wonder what...”
The man fell silent, relying on his memories. Raven came closer and tried once again to reestablish a connection to the system. A voice full of sarcasm greeted him,
'I am the system. You can't enter without my permission.'
Mental Ajax appeared again in the crippled form, Raven could only assume this is what the Blondie saw himself as.
'That's not you.'
'Yes it is, black beauty. ... You are what evolution managed on it's own and yet you reached perfection.'
'That's your imagination, nothing else.'
Ajax transformed the environment, 'Have a look at my imagination. I invite you to share my memories.'
Was it the prospect? Was it the undertone? Raven trembled with fear but in the end true to his nature curiosity won out – an inquiring mind.
Ajax flooded him with pictures of the past. Abyss – the group of scientists landing on Amoi’s hostile surface started the planet's settlement. It was known to the world that, while seeking knowledge and prosperity, they gave life to the super computer “Jupiter”. What Ajax presented to him now wasn't even reported in Jupiter's most restricted database – their original creation.
'Yes, black beauty, in order to create a race, capable of survival in the rough territory of human life, Abyss made perfection. Inviable perfection. Me.'
A wave of horror and rage accompanied Ajax words, when he moved on.
'Humans are weak. Leaving to found Tanagura, they left me behind in this twisted cage with nothing but my own thoughts and the ship's computer as company.'
Raven finally realized Ajax acting as a testament to his voracious hunger for life but together with Ajax' memories the cognition of him as a person, as unbalanced as the infants in many ways, made him shield himself even more. He suddenly was no longer able to distinguish ambitions from arrogance or distinguish sanity from insanity.
'How does Ajax, the other Ajax, fit in?'
'Not my place to tell.'
He was again tossed out of the system. Coming around at the bottom of the floor he glanced at the man still leaning against the chamber. His hurtful expression reminiscent of Kris, earlier this evening.
“Do you have the ability?”
“To a certain degree, lesser than every one of my brothers.”
“Brothers?”
“Right. He wouldn't tell you. ... The system's core is the original on-board computer of the Lucius, Abyss' ship.” He pointed with his chin to the chamber, “Their connection grew over generations. Ajax overwrote the original programming and thus creating his first child. With the aim of freeing himself others followed. Unfortunately none came up to his expectations.”
Raven put a reassuring hand on the man's arm unable to reach his shoulders given their difference’s in height. Ajax big complex didn't allow him to create anything different from Jupiter's standards. In his weird way of thinking it would compromise him.
“In which regard?”
“In every but basically the ability to dream.”
“The dreamers are your ... brothers.”
“Correct.”
Ajax created them but he couldn't simply copy his code to ensure they became dreamers, like he called it. This ability was nothing evolution sent forth intentionally, it was indeed useless, unless you weren't a being in an artificial world like Amoi. A freak of nature, nothing that could be easily reproduced, not even by a supercomputer or Ajax. Fortunately.
“I was supposed to become him.”
“How?”
“During my balancing, he shared every single moment of his existence with me.”
Mental Ajax meddled in,
'I would have gladly put this shameful existence to an end but what was supposed to be my final version... '
'isn't a dreamer after all. You are cruel, Ajax.'
'What do you expect? I was born out of the abyss.'
“In the end I could become nothing but a proxy in the outer world.”
“Have you ever tried to overstep the boundaries his ego has on you? You are nothing but perfection in Jupiter's world. Why do you stay here, craving for a kind acceptance you can't gain? He has no right to hold you here.”
The look in the man's eyes made Raven back away.
They understand each other as one. They both see themselves as the crippled creature of Ajax dreams.
Mental Ajax meddles in again,
'You yourself aren't willing to endure me.'
'Chuck it! Enduring and playing lovers are different pairs of shoes. I have had enough your pranks and manipulations. What do you want from me? Really.'
'Eos.'
That put an abrupt end to Raven's mental tirade.
'Who said, I was playing, black beauty?'
When have I gotten myself into this kind of disaster?
Raven decided to give himself a break. That was entirely to much to get his head around on the spot.
“I go to bed.”
'You haven't answered my question, black beauty.'
'You're simply not my type and stop calling me black beauty!'
'Ah.'
Whatever was going on in the Elite's head at this moment, Raven didn't want to know. However, one thing was a given that whatever it was it would not make his life any easier.
On the way back he ran into Nyet, who had his own intentions about making Raven's life easier.
“One word, mongrel.”
