“Hey Motoki!” The blonde man looked up from the counter as the two golden haired, near-twins came through the automatic doors.
“Minako! Usagi! I haven’t seen either of you here in awhile. How are you?” He leveled a concerned look at Usagi, examining her face for the answer.
“I’m doing a lot better. It’s good to see you Motoki.”
“It’s good to see you too. Decided to take up the arcade game past time again?” He winked at the blondes who laughed, sharing a secret smile.
“Why would we waste our time on games when there is a good looking man here to flirt with?” Minako propped her elbows on the counter and batted her eyes at him, making him laugh in turn.
“Don’t let Makoto hear you saying that.” He leaned in and whispered to them, conspiratorially. “You wouldn’t think it from how laid back she is, but Mako-chan is the jealous type.” The girls gave each other a look at Motoki’s informal use of their friend’s name.
“Oh, and where is ‘Mako-chan’? Are you expecting her?” Minako tried to sound casual; they already knew she was at work.
“No, she has to work a double today. I keep trying to lure her away from that sand trap she works at, but so far I haven’t really gotten anywhere. She’s got to know that with her ability she shouldn’t be working as a sous chef. That’s why I keep trying to convince her that we should open our own restaurant.”
“We?” They replied in unison.
“I know, I know. Most guys would never want to be business partners with their girlfriend, but together I just know Makoto and I could have the most successful restaurant in Tokyo! Think about it: she’s a whiz in the kitchen, and I’ve got the business skills to back her up. Hell, I’ve practically been running this dump since I was in high school!”
Motoki went on to lay out his plans to the surprised girls. He’d scouted locations, researched business loans, started sketching design concepts; he had put a lot of time and thought into his idea. It wasn’t just a fly-by-night scheme; he honestly wanted to do it. As he spoke, Usagi and Minako grew more and more impressed with him. His passion and dedication to the venture was evident; and he even let slip a little of his long-term reasoning in his ardor without realizing it.
“And that way, when they get a little older, our kids will have a place to start their first job!” He beamed at them with obvious pleasure at the idea.
“Your kids?” Minako giggled, and Motoki blushed.
“Well…you know…someday…if we have them.”
“And what, exactly, does Makoto think about all of this?” Usagi smiled at her long time friend, a peace settling over her knowing how he felt about Makoto.
“Well, she’s…skeptical. I don’t know why though. Every time I bring it up, she gets this look on her face and tries to change the subject.”
“What kind of a look?”
“Well…like it makes her sad or something. Honestly, I don’t get it. You girls think it’s a good idea, don’t you?” He ran a hand through his flaxen hair, nervously.
“Well, I do.”
“Me too.” Minako agreed. “Maybe she’s just scared that it won’t work, or that she won’t be able to handle being in charge of her own kitchen.”
“I don’t know. I don’t think so. Even though she’s ridiculously modest about her skills, I think deep down she knows how talented she is. Nope, I think it’s something else. But I can’t get her to tell me what it is.”
“Don’t worry, Motoki, I’m sure she’ll tell you eventually.” Usagi assured him, patting his hand. Or, she was sure she and Minako could get it out of the girl, since the problem in their relationship was definitely not Motoki’s lack of commitment as reported.

“Mmm, thanks Makoto, this is so yummy.” Minako and Makoto stared in amused amazement as Usagi dove into her fourth helping of the chocolate dessert in front of them.
“I’m glad you like it Usagi. It’s good to see you’ve gotten your appetite back.” The two girls laughed as Usagi grinned sheepishly.
“She’s right, though Makoto; this is amazing. Is it your own recipe?”
“Yeah, since we don’t really do dessert here, the chef sometimes lets me mess around during set up and then advertises the results in the daily special. It’s a Chocolate Irish Cream Trifle.”
“With dessert this good, you should be running your own bakery or restaurant or something.” Usagi mumbled through a mouthful of cake and pudding.
Makoto immediately began to look sad and nervous at Usagi’s statement. She looked down at her hands and mumbled something under her breath that the girls couldn’t hear. Minako decided it was time to lay all the cards on the table.
“In fact, doesn’t Motoki have some big plans about that or something?” Makoto looked up at her with wide eyes, which narrowed upon viewing the affected nonchalance of the blonde across from her.
“How could you know that? Unless you went to talk to him, like I specifically asked you NOT to!”
“Relax, Makoto, we just went to visit him. We didn’t even bring it up; he did.” It was Minako’s turn to narrow her eyes at her friend. “He also told us that you won’t even talk about it with him. What’s the problem? You know he’s got a good idea.”
“It’s not the idea that’s the problem.” Makoto mumbled. Usagi pushed her dessert aside and reached across the table to put her hand on the brunette’s shoulder.
“Then what is the problem, Mako-chan?” She said softly. Despite her obvious efforts to keep them at bay, tears welled up in her green eyes and threatened to spill down her cheeks.
“The business partner part: I don’t want to be his business partner, I want to be…” She sniffed and shook her head, looking down at her hands once more. Usagi slid out of the booth and slipped around the table, sliding in next to her friend and wrapping her arm around her shoulders.
“Couldn’t you be both?”
“No, you don’t understand. It’s not really that I don’t want to be his business partner, it’s just that…I’m afraid that then he’ll…only see me that way. Aren’t you kind of not supposed to date your business partner?”
“Makoto, I think you need to talk to him about this. Trust me, I’m sure you’ll feel better if you do.”
“Yeah, you’ve got to give him a chance to explain himself.” Minako agreed, taking Usagi’s lead and not sharing what he’d told them. She figured Makoto would need to hear it from Motoki himself before she would believe it anyway.
