  • Thanks to all the reviewers! I've decided to start posting the rest of this rather quickly - expect an update once a week from here on out. I'm going to make a concerted effort tomorrow to finish up the last chapter!

    Chapter Twenty-three - Discovery

Legato strolled into the store with an air of nonchalance. Now that he had the priest in his grasp there was nothing to do except pick up a few supplies. It just wouldn’t do for him to get Wolfwood back to the ship and have him pass out in the first round of chastisement from malnutrition or dehydration.

He quickly selected the essential items and told the owner he had already paid for them. The man nodded dumbly and Legato was feeling particularly pleased with himself, so he didn’t implant the idea for the man to kill himself once the telepath had left the store.

He whistled a short tune as he made his way across the square, infinitely entertained by the sound of the priest’s voice coming from his mouth. He smiled and looked up at the suns, giving a happy sigh. People were crying. People were in pain, emotional or otherwise. People felt abandoned. It was a good day for Legato Bluesummers.

“Mr Priest! Mr Priest!” Someone yelled in the kind of voice that would be accompanied by waving arms and a huge smile. It put him in mind of someone else. Someone that he wasn’t allowed to think about. He frowned.

Legato kept walking, ignoring the person, even as they caught up and walked next to him. The telepath didn’t look at them, obviously it was someone who knew Wolfwood and he didn’t need to keep up the act with anyone else aside from the gunman. If the priest had no friends when he came back…well…that wasn’t Legato fault, now was it? After a short while the lack of response, and even acknowledgement, made the person cease talking and, shortly after that, walking with him. Not that he even really noticed, his thoughts consumed by other things, other people. He trudged on out into the desert, a smile on his face and a stolen voice on his lips.

“Senpai! Senpai!” Milly rushed into the room, eyes frantically searching for her boss. Meryl sat at her desk, disinterestedly pressing keys on her typewriter with a single finger, the other hand supporting her chin as he leaned on the desk. She sat up with a confused frown when Milly burst in, opening her mouth to deliver a lecture, cut off when the taller Insurance girl grabbed her and shook her by the shoulders urgently.

“Senpai! It’s Mr Priest! He’s leaving! He hates us! And he wouldn’t even talk to meeeeeEEEE!” She wailed, her voice so high pitched it would hurt dogs’ ears. Meryl winced and sifted the facts from the babble, a sneaky look coming over her face. Finally Milly finished and Meryl sat up.

“This is it, Milly!” She said, an excited look on her face. Milly looked up, frowning and confused.

    “This is what, Senpai?”

Meryl caught her fist with the other hand and stood, running to their suitcases and packing their things as quickly as she could.

“This is the day that we catch that no-good priest up to his tricks! I always thought he was very troublesome and sneaky, disappearing off for no reason! This time we’re going to follow him and see where he goes!” She finished with a flourish, her bag packed. She started on Milly’s as the other insurance girl hesitantly rose to her feet.

    “But…”

“No buts, Milly! We are following him and that’s it! Mr Vash hasn’t moved towns in a while and I’m sure it’ll be simple enough to track him down when we come back. The priest always comes back and knows where he is, so we’ll just follow him, ne?”

The taller girl looked unconvinced and Meryl rolled her eyes.

“Come on! Finish packing! We have to go now else we’ll lose him!” She shouted, startling Milly into action.

Soon she was out the door and striding off in the direction Milly had last seen Wolfwood, wary and nervous big girl in tow.

    //////

Vash sobbed on the bed, still sitting where Legato had left him. He whimpered miserably and fell onto his side where he curled around his pillow, pressing his face into it to muffle his sobs. His whole world was falling apart.

‘He doesn’t love me! Why did he say those things?! What happened? What did I do wrong?’ He burst into a fresh set of tears, the ache in his chest intensifying the more he thought about it. The prospect of facing the rest of his life without the priest was daunting and terrifying. If he had trouble baring himself this time…well he couldn’t imagine the problems that would arise next time. The idea of the rest of his days alone suddenly weighed down upon the Stampede, overwhelming grief making him choke on his tears.

Wolfwood’s betrayal had hurt him deeply. He’d honestly believed that the priest had loved him, had felt the same way the gunman had. His mind replayed the last hour, hearing that beloved voice, wounding him with vicious words as the priest smirked and felt he had enough time to light one last cigarette before he left Vash’s life for good.

Now that had been odd. Vash frowned, blinking his eyes slowly. Wolfwood always knew where his matches were…he kept them in the same place every time. It had seemed quite surreal, the way the priest was fumbling around for them, holding his cigarette to his lips like he didn’t know what to do with it. Then the face he’d made after he inhaled…

Vash had never seen Wolfwood make THAT face before. Usually the first drag brought an air of contentment over the priest…but that time, he’d looked like he was about to choke with disgust. Vash sniffled and wiped his nose on a tissue, sitting up in bed and cradling his face in his hands.

Come to think of it, Wolfwood had been acting strange afterwards. The gunman ceased his sniffling and slowly got out of bed, his mind working on all the hurtful things the priest had said.

He dressed slowly, remembering the odd way the priest had been behaving. He’d stood strangely by the door, lifting his cross up on the wrong shoulder. Vash frowned, wiping at the drying tears on his cheeks. His stomach rumbled, the need for comfort food rising, and he patted it absently, thoughts still on the priest. Vash shook his head. It must have been his imagination. The fact that the priest seemed to be someone completely different from the moment he’d risen from bed was probably just due to the fact that he was letting his true face show.

The idea of that, that Wolfwood had been pretending this entire time, made Vash tear up again and he wiped angrily at his cheeks with the palm of his hand.

‘Okay Vash…it’s time to get over this…’

He nodded sadly to himself and stepped out the door, closing it behind him. He turned to go down the hall, his eyes catching something on the floor. He frowned, puzzled, and bent to pick it up, rolling it between his gloved fingers.

    Wolfwood’s cigarette.

It had been stubbed out after only one puff. Vash looked incredulously at the wonky white stick between his fingers. Wolfwood never left a cigarette. Never. Not unless there was some kind of drastic event happening. Vash remembered the only time Wolfwood had abandoned his cigarette was to feed hungry children in the desert.

And the fact the he’d just left it in the hallway, on the floor. Vash shook his head, becoming more confused by the minute. Wolfwood would never do such a thing! He was far too respectful of the hotel staff and other people’s property! He glanced up, sighting the black smudge on the wall where the cigarette had been stubbed out and shook his head again, using the tip of one finger to wipe the mark off the wall. This wasn’t his Wolfwood…or maybe he just wanted to believe it wasn’t because then it would take away the pain of the last hour. Vash frowned.

‘I need to figure this out…’

He turned back to his room and entered, slowly shutting the door behind him. He sat back on the bed, rolling the cigarette between his fingers while he thought.

“Okay…Wolfwood and I are…were…lovers…” He swallowed and continued with his line of thought. ‘Wolfwood suddenly, very>/b> suddenly, didn’t want to be anymore. Why would that be? He was acting strangely and not at all like himself…so…maybe he didn’t want to leave me but someone made him…?’ Vash’s eyes narrowed. ‘Who could make him do that? I know that Knives was looking for us…Wolfwood told me that Knives wanted him to go back and that’s why we had to hide so much. He was so scared of something. Someone. He said that Legat-…oh shit…‘

Vash’s eyes widened and he dropped the cigarette on the floor as his hands stilled.

“Legato! Legato, that bastard!” Vash shouted, leaping to his feet and turning to his bag. He began to pack hurriedly, stuffing things in and growling curses. He glanced around the room once as he paused by the door. The bed wasn’t made and the room was a mess but that couldn’t be helped. He wouldn’t take the insurance girls. It would be far too dangerous for them. He spotted something by the bed, on the nightstand and bit his lip when he recognised it.

Wolfwood’s cross. The one Vash had given him. He never left it behind, always making sure he was wearing it before he went out. The Stampede strode forward to collect it, staring at the little inscription on the back.

    Here whenever you need me…V.

Well, Wolfwood certainly needed him now…

He put it in his pocket with reverence and left the room, running down the stairs, almost knocking an old lady down as she struggled to ascend. Normally the gunman would have stopped to assist her…but today wasn’t going to be her day. He had other people to help….

“Sorry! Sorry!” He shouted over his shoulder as he rushed to the front desk and slapped down some money. The clerk looked inquiringly at him and he huffed out his room number, saying that the extra was for the cleaners. He tuned and ran for the door.

There was only one place that Legato would take Wolfwood.

    Knives’ ship.

So that’s where he would go.
