Disclaimer: I do not own Trinity Blood, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Min: I'm glad you like where the story is going! I try to keep the plot interesting so it keeps you all on your toes! Yeah, it's gonna get interesting very soon.
winterfrau: Yeah, Cain's a little... selfish and childish, but he's so pretty, and he's such a good lover.... oops! I mean.... Mmmm... pretty blonde bishis. Yeah, I'm going to be pushing the envelope with a lot of my relationships, pushing the taboos that we have when it comes to relationships. I actually sat down and thought about this, and I was like.... would it even matter if you were immortal and your food was different and your show of affection and everything was different? So I'll be investigating that through my writing :P And yes, yes, yes... we shall have more Cain and Isaak, since it won't be happening in Esoteric anymore :/ read and enjoy!
Darkephoenix: Yeah, I was kinda trying to put myself in Cen's position and I would totally feel lost, you know? "Mommy doesn't love me!!!" That whole thing. But she does love him, and it's gonna be put to the test soon. Glad you liked it, and thanks for the support when it comes to my whining about my family. It's nothing short of devastating.
DarkCrusnikMagician: Hey! Graduation, something I'm not doing but should be... *made herself feel bad* Yeah, my Cain's a jerk, but he's so gorgeous when he does it! Yeah, some shit's gonna go down. It's gonna be awesome.
Chapter 21: En Garde
When Alex and Abel appeared in the garden, they found Aurora standing on Tres’s feet as he danced with her in slow circles. He was bent quite awkwardly to hold her little hands, but they were both obviously having a very good time. The boys had gotten a hold of fencing foils and were currently engaged in a battle to best one another. Seras and Walter sat on a bench in the shade as the sun was fast approaching it’s noon time high.
“You’re up awful early.” The two smiled at her a little ruefully. “What’s wrong?”
“Master woke us just after the sun came up. He says something is on the move. He thinks it’s the RCO.” Seras’ face grew grim.
“He says he can feel someone skulking through Rome in the shadows.” Walter looked as though he’d caught a whiff of something foul.
“In the shadows?” Alex contemplated their news for a moment before opening her mind to call for Alucard.
“Alucard.”
“Well, well. If it isn’t Lady Alexandra.”
“No time for your cockiness, D. What did you find?”
“Hmm, since you asked so nicely... I found someone playing hopscotch in the shade. He finally noticed me as he drew close to the Vatican and then he disappeared.”
“He was avoiding the sun?”
“Indeed.”
“Did you get a look at him?”
“Black uniform, red arm band.”
“Anything else?”
“He melted through the walls too quickly, I couldn’t get a good look at him.”
“What was he?”
“Definitely Nosferatu.”
Alex paled and Seras and Walter merely watched her in concern. Abel approached and placed a hand on her shoulder, stirring her from her reverie.
“What is it, Alexandra?”
“I want the children inside. I’m going to do a sweep of the city.” Her voice had grown cold and clipped; she was in full tactical mode.
“What’s happened?” Abel’s tone matched Alex’s.
“They’re here.”
“They’re in Rome?”
“They were on our front step not long ago. I want them in doors and underground if possible.” Alex was so on edge that touching her was akin to a static shock, but Abel kept his hand firmly in place.
“They will be well guarded, don’t worry Alexandra.”
“Watch them for me, Abel. I need to go.”
“No.” Alex turned to him, almost angrily.
“Tres can watch them. I will have some of the others called in, Seras and Walter can help. Besides, Alucard is here to watch them. Someone has to watch you.” For a moment Alex thought about making a cutting remark about being an adult, but she realized then that he was right. She was prone to losing herself in thought, and that would not do today.
“Cendricus, Ilarius, Aurora! Inside, now.” All three children stopped what they were doing and turned to look at their Mother.
“What is it?” Ilarius dropped his foil, moving to grab Aurora.
“Something has come up and you may be in danger. Stay with Tres, Seras, and Walter.”
“It’s him, isn’t it?” Cen’s face was half hidden by his hair, a curiously deadpan expression blanking his features.
“Why do you say that?”
“I felt it when I walked outside. Can’t you feel it, Mother?” Her children stood, gathered together before her, looking at her expectantly. She closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath, trying to quiet her own body and mind. A few seconds was all she needed. There was something there, something she’d been too occupied this morning to notice. She felt the buzz of the nanomachines on alert.
“My God.”
“It’s him, isn’t it? He’s nearby.” Cendricus looked at her and as they’re eyes locked she could sense the cruel laughter of his Father as though it were a cold draft, brushing past her ear. She cupped his face in her hands, her vehement expression startling her son.
“Cendricus, no matter what happens, you must never leave the AX or your Aunt Seth’s care. They are here to protect you and you must listen to them, for they only speak the truth. Promise me.” He gazed at her, a little dumbfounded at being singled out.
“I promise, Mother.”
“Go with your brother and your sister. Seras, Walter, take them down into the catacombs, as near to Alucard’s chambers as you can get.” They nodded and rose to accompany the children.
“Am I on a babysitting mission? And you didn’t even ask.”
“Alucard, you must watch over them. If my children are taken from me, the world you’ve known for well over a millennia will cease to be. If harm comes to my babies, I will drain this world of life.”
“Mmm, you make me tingle. I will watch them for you, My Dear Lady. And what will you give me in return?”
“I will leave your food source intact.”
“Ah, such wit.”
Half an hour later, Abel and Alex were soaring over Rome, their keen eyes on the lookout for anything suspicious. Lady Catherina had been notified of the situation, and all the AX members were on the lookout. Alex worried her lower lip until she’d drawn blood several times and Abel finally crouched on a roof corner, forcing them to take a break.
“We haven’t found them yet, we need to keep moving.” Alex was agitated and her lip was rapidly healing, finally free from its abuse.
“Alex, you’re worrying yourself sick. We’ve been searching for hours now.”
“Our mission is complete when we catch the son of a bitch.” Alexandra bared her fangs and Abel stood to consider her.
“We’ll get him, Alexandra.” She softened as he closed the space between them, holding her, wrapping his wings around hers. She settled in his embrace, but only for a moment, before she pulled away to let her eyes search the streets below.
“I can’t sense anything unusual. Just this buzzing in my blood.”
“We should probably return to the Vatican and report.”
“I’ll return when there is something to report.” Alex dove of the edge of the building, her wings splaying to catch an updraft. Abel sighed quietly, knowing she would only stand down when exhaustion took her. He resigned himself to a long and weary goose chase as he leapt to follow her.
Down in the catacombs, away from the burning light of the day, Seras and Tres sat with the Watteau children. Seras chewed on her lip nervously while Tres held Aurora, trying to quiet her sniffles. Both brothers tried to get her to come sit with them, but she’d buried her little face in Tres’s uniform and refused to accept any comfort.
“Seras.” Alucard melted into the room without preamble, making everyone jump and Aurora shriek piercingly. Alucard lifted his eyebrows at the young blonde and grinned at her. “Nice to see someone’s still properly frightened by my antics.”
“Don’t tease, Master.” Seras petted Aurora as she trembled in Tres’ arms.
“Where is Walter? I thought he was going to accompany you?” The boys eyed Alucard a little suspiciously, but remained quiet, preferring to listen to their conversation.
“He went to find Sir Hellsing and to help Sister Kate make the Vatican ready for an attack.”
“What’s happened? Why has Mother holed us up in the catacombs?” Cendricus looked expectantly from Seras to Alucard.
“Because, Little One, The Big Bad Wolf has come sniffing at our door.”
“Father was here? You saw him?” Cen’s eyes lit up in surprise.
“Father?” Alucard considered the boy from behind his orange glasses, grinning as Cen shifted uncomfortably under the weight of his gaze. “No, I don’t believe it was Contra Mundi himself, merely a pet. Seems he loosened the leash so that Rover could mark a bit of territory. Lovely, really, because I intend to show him just who’s territory he’s in.”
“Not yours!” Cen’s chin jutted in defiance and Ilarius nudged him reproachfully.
“No, certainly not, but not his either. And since we’re welcomed guests...” Alucard’s fangs glittered in the dim light.
“Is Mommy gonna fight Cen’s Father?” Aurora’s eyes were blood-shot, her lower lip trembling.
“I don’t know, I’m an exterminator, not a guardian. I’d be there to save her, should the need arise, but apparently Lady Watteau feels my skills are better used as a babysitter. So, let’s hope Mommy doesn’t get herself into anything she can’t get herself out of.” Alucard grinned at the shivering girl and she promptly turned her face into Tres’ lapels, sobbing.
“Master, you’re horrible!” Seras shoved Alucard aside to comfort Aurora. “Don’t listen to him, sweetie. He’s just a cranky old man.”
“Aurora, please, don’t cry, Love. Your Mother is just out patrolling the city. Plus, she’s got Abel with her. He wouldn’t let anything happen to Mom, right?” Aurora turned her water-logged face up to Tres’, swiping at the blood that stained her cheeks. Tres smiled at her, tucking a stray lock of gold behind her little ear.
“No, Abel is always watching Mommy.”
“See? He’ll take care of her.” Tres smiled reassuringly at her again and she rested her head on his shoulder, wiping her nose on her sleeve. Seras patted her hair, fussing over her.
“Don’t worry, Aurora. No one is as terrible as Alucard and he’s on our side.” Seras smiled and Aurora did her best to smile back. Alucard leaned in behind her, whispering into the ear that wasn’t pressed against Tres’ shoulder.
“That’s right. So, you have no worried unless I decide to misbehave.”
Aurora spun around in Tres’ lap and bared her fangs, her eyes glowing bright red, her wings flared behind her. She hissed ferally, the blood staining her cheeks completing her wild look, and Alucard raised his eyebrows again.
“My my, such manners.” With that, Alucard disappeared, his chuckle echoing around the room. Aurora pulled away from Tres, fluttering over to Cendricus’ lap, where she tucked her wings and curled into a ball. Cen held her and petted her hair, rocking her. Ilarius kissed her cheek and wrapped his arms around both of them.
“Don’t worry, Bug.” Ilarius nuzzled her and she twitched her wings at the appellation.
“Buggy Buggy Little Bugger!” Cen crossed his eyes and blew farts against her cheek. Aurora turned and leaned her forehead against Cen’s, wiggling her nose. Seras watched the children’s interaction, rapt. After Aurora settled down, Seras could no longer hold in her question.
“Aurora, might I take a look at your wings?”
“You like them?” Her face lit up as she hopped out of Cen’s lap to go twirl for Seras. The boys groaned and Seras clasped her hands together in delight.
“They’re brilliant! What other powers do you have?” Tres winked at Seras when Aurora wasn’t looking, silently thanking her for focusing everyone’s mind on something other than the missing parties.
Alex was crouched on another rooftop, her stance mimicking the gargoyle a few feet beneath her. Abel stood beside her as she flapped her wings anxiously.
“This doesn’t bode well.” The blood red sunset behind her would have been breathtaking on any other day.
“Perhaps this was his plan all along, to make us squirm. You know his games.” Abel’s voice was soft, lost in thought.
“Yes. I, of all people, know the sick games your brother plays.” Alex stood, grinding her boot heel into the brick ledging in frustration.
“Let’s return to Her Eminence. We should make a defensive and offensive strategy with Sister Kate and the members of Hellsing.” Abel wrapped a hand around her waist.
“A red sun setting means death is on its way. A red sun rising means death has already had its fill.” Alex’s eyes glowed softly in the failing light as they searched the lengthening shadows below.
“You don’t really believe in that superstitious nonsense, do you?” Alex shook her head. “Besides, what fear do we have of death? Death has already come for us both and failed.”
“I have no fear of death. Not after I prayed for it for so many years. It is the thought that death has come for my children, adorned in white wings and a beguiling smile.”
“Then it is a good thing you have not one, but two, dark knights to protect them.” Abel kissed her temple and Alex curled into his chest.
“Let’s go home. The buzzing is getting worse.” Alex pulled back and they both took flight. They’d not gotten five feet off the roof when they were struck by a deafening boom. They both flinched in the direction of the disturbance, but Alex was the first to recover.
She shot off toward a rising plume of dust and smoke as Abel shouted after her. He radioed Kate for back up an sped along to catch up to Alex. It took them several minutes to reach the scene, finding the swirling clouds of destruction on the outskirts of the city. Alex touched down and used the flapping of her massive wings to clear a path through the thick dust. Abel was close behind her, his ears pricked for any signs of live.
“Kate’s sending reinforcements. Perhaps we should wait, Alex.” She ignored him, a growing dread roiling in the pit of her stomach. Alex crept forward until the dust started to settle, stepping carefully through the rubble that was once a building. The beautiful little chapel, that had once been temporary overflow housing for traveling priests and nuns visiting the Vatican, was hardly left standing. The back and part of the left side wall were all that remained standing.
“Were there priests or nuns staying here?” Alex’s voice was quavering dangerously and she was barely able to swallow the panic that rose. She could feel a familiar presence nearby and the anxiety was quickly rising up to choke her. Alex tucked her wings, her back bent slightly, like a bow ready to loose an arrow. Abel stepped up close behind her, his eyes roving over the scene.
“I don’t believe so.”
Abel and Alex cautiously picked their way through the wreckage, checking for any survivors or bodies, both of them questioning the minimal damage this attack had caused. Alex started, were wings flared, a glint of silver flying through the air. The shadows behind a small swirl of dust shifted, avoiding her silver sai before materializing as Alucard. Alex bristled, growling angrily.
“You could have given a little warning.”
“It’s not like I changed my routine. You should know well enough about my entrances by now.” Alucard grinned at her, his glasses glinting. Integra came strolling into the ruins a moment later, puffing away on a cigar. Integra tossed the sai back at Alex and she caught it cleanly, sticking it back in her thigh holster.
“This all seems rather pointless.” Integra’s voice sounded quite unaffected from behind her cigar smoke. Alex opened her mouth to reply, but was cut off by a disembodied voice.
“I assure you, Mein Herr’s plans are never pointless.” The laughter that rippled through the dark ruins made Alex’s blood run cold. She turned around, coming face to face with Isaak. He stood several yards away, leaning against the back wall, a smug smile painting his features. Alex began to shake from head to toe, the rage boiling in her veins, pouring off her in energetic waves. Alucard turned to watch her as her fists clenched tightly at her sides, gouging the insides of her own hands with her claws. Alex’s breath came in strained pants and her skin began to glow an angry red as though she’d been slapped on every exposed surface. In the next few seconds, both Vampires were taken aback as flames engulfed Alex’s hair from root to tip, flowing down her back and legs, wreathing her in fire. The heat coming off her was astonishing and they were momentarily stunned, thinking that their opponent had set her ablaze with merely his thoughts.
“Ah, elemental rage. I always knew our reunion would be spectacular, Mistress.” Alex roared at the raven haired man as she slashed violently at her own forearm with her claws. Her giant blood sword materialized in her hand and Alex flexed her wings of flame menacingly.
“VON KÄMPFER!” Alex’s fangs had grown nearly past her chin and she snarled viciously as she launched herself into the air, her weapon raised. Isaak followed suit, launching an attack with his Arrow of Belial. Alex let them strike her, plowing through them as she would a cloud of gnats. She swiped at him and he narrowly avoided the slicing of her blade. Alex’s body lost some of its definition to flames as she became a being of pure fire, her rage fueling the blaze. Methuselah began pouring out of the wood work, cutting the others off before they could move to aid her. Abel and Integra began blasting away with their guns while Alucard used his own flattened hands as weapons against his attackers, slicing through them like butter.
Isaak floated away from her and Alex turned in mid-air, launching herself at him again. They collided and Isaak grabbed her by the throat, slamming her into one of the remaining bits of wall. His touch brought back terrible memories, even as she seared his hand, and he sought to inundate her with them. The flames began to sputter and die down as Alex struggled against his grip, which remained as strong as ever, despite her Crusnik power. His power flowed from his fingers, drowning her in re-enactments of Hugue’s demise as he ground his body vulgarly against her own. Alex whimpered pitifully, her skin growing pale. She grew heavy and cold in his grasp, veins of grey creeping over her skin. Isaak watched, fascinated despite himself, as Alex turned herself into a marble statue. Blood tears ran down her face, but Isaak’s psychological attack slowed and weakened as he became distracted by her change in weight. Alex finally shook herself somewhat free of his dirty tricks and shoved the two of them off the wall, wrapping her legs around his ribcage. She squeezed him mercilessly, using the punishing density of her newly reformed flesh to crush him. Isaak cried out in pain, and a terrible grin painted Alex’s pale face.
“Yes, you took the most precious thing in my life from me and I will see you suffer for it.” Alex’s voice was no longer present under her demonic Crusnik voice and Isaak struggled to free himself from her grasp. “You who were always as unmoveable as a statue shall finally know what it feels like to be held so fast.”
“You will never win against me, Alexandra. I will forever be your superior because I only live to serve Mein Herr. If he wishes it so, nothing short of my death will stop me from achieving the goal, and you haven’t the strength.”
Isaak put his arms straight up over his head, sliding neatly out of her grip, flying after Abel, who was engaged with lesser minions, his back turned to Isaak’s approach. Alex roared in frustration and pelted after him at top speed. She caught up to him and grabbed a fist full of his beautiful hair, used it to swing him back up against the back wall. She collided with him the very moment he hit the wall, pinning him there. She pulled a silver dagger from the holsters on her calves and held it up to his throat, licking her lips as his eyes widened, marveling at the speed of her attack.
“You took my husband from me. I will crush your spirit and destroy everything that has meaning for you before I send your soul into the bowels of hell. You think I don’t know the best ways to hurt you Isaak? Let’s see how you fare when I torture and kill your lover before your very eyes.” Without further comment, Alex slashed at his throat in a great arc, removing his head cleanly from his body, the severed flesh hissing and smoking from the silver. The rest of the Methuselah were all but finished off and Alex threw the body over her shoulder, hearing it land with a sickening thud and splash at Alucard’s feet. She carried the vacantly staring head of the great Isaak von Kämpfer by his hair, trailing it behind her like a macabre security blanket.
“Jesus.” Abel stared at her, her hair and upper body sprayed with his blood, her skin returned to it’s normal texture. She wore a rather dead expression as she nodded at the body.
“Shall we run through his heart and burn him then?”
“My my. I never knew you were such a firecracker.” Alucard grinned and re-seated his glasses with a single finger as he rolled the body onto its back. Alex watched the symbol on Alucard’s glove glow weakly in the dark. She gasped and dropped the head she’d been holding, dashing over to the body with blinding speed. She kneeled and grasped a limp hand, her heart stopping as she caught sight of the emblem on the back of the white glove, an emblem that she’d never seen Isaak wear before.
“Heaven help us! Integra, is there any way to–” Alex’s question was cut off as the limp body sprang to life, a hand plunging into her gut like a blade. Alex clamped her lips together, but couldn’t hold in the wave of blood that rose in her throat and burst past her lips, covering her chest. Isaak’s chuckle bounced off the walls as his body pulled Alex back into a pitch black corner. Alucard and Abel moved forward swiftly, only to find the body re-emerge with its head back in its rightful spot. He held Alexandra up at his side as he advanced on them.
“You see now, my dear, that Mein Herr has seen fit to bind me to him. I am forever his, and your hatred will never be enough to destroy me. Much as Alucard can be called to greater and greater levels of power by his Master’s command, so too will I rise whenever my Master bids it so. I sustain him and he sustains me. One will not perish while the other still stands.”
“Alexandra!” Abel made a move for her again, his scythe drawn at the ready, but Integra stopped him as Alucard advanced, one echoing step at a time.
“You pitiful prat. How many centuries have you lived? You, whose powers are so weak as to be mistaken for a mere Methuselah, seek to challenge me? I will devour your very soul.” Alucard began releasing his seals to access greater levels of his power and Isaak dropped Alex in the dust, watching from the corner of his eye as she writhed in agony on the ground. The space around them grew dark and cold, as though light had been utterly extinguished from the world. Isaak looked around rather smugly as dozens of red eyes peered at him from the shadows. Alucard’s disembodied grin and glowing eyes taunted Isaak from the darkness, coming closer and closer.
Isaak called forth his shadows, watching as they rose from the floor, forming themselves into demonic bodies, the shuffling of their feet echoing through the ruins. Alucard had already discarded his fedora and glasses and he threw his head back and laughed at Isaak’s display.
“Let them come. Let’s see what you have, boy.” Isaak sent his minions at Alucard with a pretentious flick of his wrist and Alucard’s grin spread wildly across his features. The shadow demons held Alucard fast, pinning his arms behind his back as Isaak stalked up to the great Vampire.
“Pitiful and weak? You haven’t even seen the barest hint of my power.” Isaak’s expression was insufferable.
“Your power? I think that’s rather generous of you. You are weak because you hide behind your Master. Your Master is a coward, too afraid to stand and fight for his ideals. Instead, he hopes to instigate war between two greater factions and thereby leave himself an in through the din and chaos of battle. He knows he isn’t strong enough on his own and so he seeks to turn his enemies against each other.”
“You don’t know the first thing of Mein Herr’s greatness.” Isaak shook with anger and he bared his fangs at Alucard.
“I know he likes to hit and run. I know that he is scum, and that is all I need to know. You are pathetic. A Nosferatu being kept by a Methuselah. You don’t even deserve such a lofty classification.”
Alucard dissolved Isaak’s minions, watching his face deflate at Alucard’s ability to overrule his command of the shadows. Isaak never expected anyone to wield greater control over shadows than he did. Isaak summoned his Arrow of Belial once more, and before Alucard could even move to counter the attack, a blood red blade exploded through Isaak’s chest from behind. Alex stood, digging her claws into his shoulder punishingly until he kneeled before her. Isaak looked down to see what had torn through him, touching the blade incredulously, his fingers trembling. The blood that flowed from his wounds lifting, curling through the air as Alex absorbed them, her hair swirling around her almost sluggishly, but she grinned at him triumphantly.
“I will wring the life from you.” Alex turned her sword within him with a sickening crunching noise, finally retracting it.
“I... cannot die while Mein Herr still lives.” Isaak chuckled as he took in the sight of his destroyed chest.
“Then I will destroy you both!” Alex swung and once again removed his head from his body. She let her weapon dissolve back into her skin and pinned the body to the wall with one sai and the head with the other. She caressed them both with her fingertips, grinning as they burst into flames. “Tell him, Isaak. Tell him that I am something else now. He has unleashed a monstrous abomination, and it will come back to destroy him.”
Alex sank against the wall, the wound in her abdomen still fresh and oozing blood and fluids everywhere. She staggered, turning to face Abel, Alucard and Integra. The others were lost in her blurred vision, and she focused only on Abel. She smiled sadly before she finally collapsed and they all rushed to aid her.
“Alexandra.” Alucard lifted Alex from the dusty floor, shaking her gently. She showed no signs of life, but he could hear a weak pulse. He lifted her and passed her off to Abel as gently as could be. “You’d better get her back to the Vatican and get her a feast going. He took nearly her whole volume and she didn’t take nearly enough back.”
Abel lifted off without another word and sped toward the Vatican at break-neck speed, praying as the blood tears rolled down his cheeks. He prayed more desperately than he ever had in his life, his ears tuned in to her heartbeat above the wind that howled past his ears.
When Cain finally shows up, I promise Alu will have more of a role in the fight. This time around Alex kinda ruined his fun and he wasn't even getting started yet.
